As I mentioned in an earlier write-up, many of the musical acts in these benefit concerts had their most popular years in the late 1960s and/or early 1970s, but broke up or went into commercial decline after that. This is another case. Big Brother and the Holding Company came to fame in the 1960s primarily due to their lead singer Janis Joplin. But she broke up with them in 1969, and then died in 1971. The band stayed together for a little while without Joplin, releasing albums in 1970 and 1971. But they broke up in 1972.
And that's how things stayed until 1987. A reunited band contained most of the original members, including Sam Andrew, Peter Albin, Dave Getz, and James Gurley. But obviously there was no Joplin anymore. Instead, Michel Bastian was chosen to replace her lead vocals.
For this concert, they chose to play some of the songs most closely associated with Joplin, including the band's biggest hit, "Piece of My Heart." Whether you consider this band should have kept going without Joplin is up to you.
