Ringo Starr & Friends - Ringo at the Ryman, Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN, 1-14-2025

Just a few days ago, a commenter (Brett Allen) suggested that I post the "Ringo at the Ryman" concert, which was broadcast on TV in early 2025. I had never even heard of this, but I went to check it out. I discovered this was a really excellent suggestion, so here it is already. Thanks again to Brett for making that suggestion.

In January 2025, Ringo Starr released a studio album called "Look Up." It was the first album since his very first solo album in 1970 that had a overt country sound to it. For his supporting musicians, he picked some of my favorite currently performing musical acts, like Larkin Poe, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, and Alison Krauss. They appeared for this concert (minus Alison Krauss), plus some other very well chosen guests, like Jack White, Sheryl Crow, and Rodney Crowell. I'm especially gratified to see the prominent role Larkin Poe had. I've been promoting their music for a long time now. It's nice to see them gradually breaking into the major leagues, despite the lack of obvious hit singles or hit albums, but just from building up a following through touring and being really talented.

Oddly, though, two famous guests only appeared on stage to help with the singalongs on the last two songs: Emmylou Harris and Brenda Lee.

Out of the four Beatles, Starr was the one most influenced by country music. This concert was meant to promote his latest studio album, for sure. But it also showed the country influence in his earlier works, including many country-influenced country songs. Starr sang and/or played drums on some of the songs. But for a majority of the songs, he let the guest stars sing lead vocals. About half of the time, he wasn't even on stage.

I was able to find a video file of this concert. Then I converted it into audio format and broke it into mp3s. So I don't think this has been shared as an audio bootleg until now. The music is all unreleased, and the sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and nine minutes long.

The cover photo is from the encore at the end of this exact concert. I can recognize some of the people, but not all of them. From left to right: unknown, Molly Tuttle, unknown, Jack White, Ringo Starr, Rodney Crowell, Brenda Lee (in front of Crowell), Rebecca Lovell and Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe, Emmylou Harris, Mickey Guyton, unknown, and Billy Strings. There were a few more people standing on each side that got cropped out, or otherwise everyone would have appeared considerably smaller.

Note also that I made some edits in Photoshop to the crowd at the bottom of the picture. In the original, a couple of people were holding their cell phones up high to take pictures, and I found that distracting. So I pasted in heads of more random people (taken from parts of the image cropped on either side) to cover up the cell phones.

Molly Tuttle - Livestream Concert, Volume 3: Pickin' Party - The Basement, Nashville, TN, 12-17-2020

Here's the last of three livestream concerts Molly Tuttle did near the end of 2020. All three concerts were special, with entirely different set lists from each other, so all three are worthy of posting here.

This one differs from the previous two in three important ways. First, instead of doing all covers, Tuttle stuck much more to her own songs. She's probably best known for her amazing guitar picking ability, and you can see the focus on that with the concert's theme of "Pickin' Party." Secondly, as the "party" part suggests, this one isn't just her and a couple of band members, like the two previous concert. She had three special guests join in at different times. To be honest, I wasn't previously familiar with any of the guests, but they joined in with lead vocals sometimes, often on their own songs, and often took part in guitar picking duels with Tuttle.

The final difference with the previous two concerts is that those were almost entirely just the songs and no talking, whereas this one has all the banter between songs. In my opinion, this gives the concert a lot more character, so I much prefer it this way. I hope that posting these concerts will inspire anyone who has versions of either of the two previous concerts to step forward and share that, so I can update those with all the banter there must have been on those.

There's not much else to say except I hope that by posting these concerts, I'll be able to turn more of you folks onto her music. In my opinion, she's one of the most talented newcomers in music these days.

This concert is an hour and 19 minutes long. That makes it about 20 minutes longer than either of the previous two concerts in this series, probably because this one has the banter between songs and those don't.

01 Save This Heart (Molly Tuttle)

For the two previous concerts in this series, I was able to use screenshots of the exact concerts in question for the album art. I wasn't able to do that in this case. So instead I used a different screenshot from the previous concert. If anyone has a good image from this exact concert, please let me know.

Molly Tuttle - Livestream Concert, Volume 2: Talkin' 'bout a Revolution - The Basement, Nashville, TN, 12-3-2020

Recently, I posted a Molly Tuttle livestream concert that mostly consisted of cover songs. That was one of three such concerts she did in late 2020. Each one had a different theme, and the set lists were almost entirely unique, not just to each other, but also to anything she's done before or since. This is the second of the three shows.

The theme of this show is "Talkin' 'bout a Revolution," which means political protest songs. I consider myself a politically progressive minded person, so this is right up my alley. If you're similarly inclined, I'll bet you'll like it too. One thing I especially appreciate is that she's taken some modern pop songs that I normally would avoid due to production issues by the likes of Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift, and redone them in a more classic rock and roll mode, helping to highlight how they fit into the protest song mode.

As with the first show in this series, Tuttle played guitar and was backed only by a bassist and drummer. So while the whole show is rocking (and without the acoustic section of the first show), it has a fairly bare-bones sound. The bass played also helped with backing vocals.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell
02 Talkin' 'bout a Revolution - Tracy Chapman
03 Working Girl Blues - Hazel and Alice
04 We Shall Not Be Moved - Woody Guthrie
05 Fake Empire - The National
06 The Crowd - Operation Ivy
07 Why We Build the Wall - Anais Mitchell
08 Not Ready to Make Nice - The Chicks
09 The Man - Taylor Swift
10 Rebel Girl - Bikini Kill
11 Born This Way - Lady Gaga
12 Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead
13 Ohio - Neil Young
14 What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
15 War - Bob Marley
16 Imagine - John Lennon
17 [What's So Funny 'Bout] Peace, Love, and Understanding - Elvis Costello

Here's the usual song list:

01 Big Yellow Taxi (Molly Tuttle)
02 Talkin' 'bout a Revolution (Molly Tuttle)
03 Working Girl Blues (Molly Tuttle)
04 We Shall Not Be Moved (Molly Tuttle)
05 Fake Empire (Molly Tuttle)
06 The Crowd (Molly Tuttle)
07 Why We Build the Wall (Molly Tuttle)
08 Not Ready to Make Nice (Molly Tuttle)

11 Born This Way (Molly Tuttle)
12 Fake Plastic Trees (Molly Tuttle)
13 Ohio (Molly Tuttle)
14 What's Going On (Molly Tuttle)
15 War (Molly Tuttle)

As with the previous show in this series, I was fortunate to be able to take a screenshot from the exact concert featured here. Note that Tuttle is wearing a shirt with the slogan "Human rights for all," in keeping with the theme of the show. Later, I used the Krea AI program to improve the image quality.

Molly Tuttle - Livestream Concert, Volume 1: Sounds of the Bay - The Basement, Nashville, TN, 11-19-2020

A couple of months ago, I discovered a relatively new musical artist that I'd previously missed, Molly Tuttle, and posted a couple albums of her performing songs in acoustic mode during the 2020 pandemic. I think she's a triple threat: talented singer, songwriter, and guitar player. Her guitar playing is especially impressive.

It turns out that in late 2020, she did three concerts at a Nashville club called the Basement, and these shows were livestreamed over the Internet. I've managed to belatedly find all three, and I'm posting them here. They're all interesting because they have different themes, which means that they have totally different set lists. Also, it appears the vast majority of the songs are songs that she's never done in public before or since, but were worked up specially for these shows.

She is generally known as a progressive bluegrass artist, mostly doing folky and/or country styles. But she's been diversifying her sound on her most recent albums (as I write this in 2021). She shows remarkable range here, and generally rocks. Let's just say not many bluegrass artists would perform songs by the likes of Green Day, Rancid, and Sly and the Family Stone!

Each of the three concerts had a theme. This one, the first one chronologically, had the theme of "Sounds of the Bay," meaning the San Francisco Bay. Although the show took place in Nashville, Tuttle grew up in the Bay area, so I presume that explains the theme. Most of the songs are not about the Bay area (though a couple are). Instead, she generally did covers of songs by bands that were based in the Bay area. For instance, the song "Olympia, WA," initially feels out of place, since that's about a town in Washington state, but it was originally done by Rancid, which was a band based in the Bay area.

For the concert, Tuttle was accompanied by a bassist and drummer, just enough backing to give her a full band sound. However, there is a little acoustic section in the middle of the show, from tracks 10 to 14. Generally speaking, the concert's songs aren't ones that show off her singing or guitar playing to maximum effect. It's more like she just went through a bunch of songs she really enjoyed, and had fun playing them. In my opinion, she performed an interesting mix of well-known classics, such as "White Rabbit," and obscurities, such as "Disco Man," which is not a one-hit wonder from the late 1970s like I first guessed, but is a 2020 EP track by Bay area musician Remi Wolf, who has only put out one album so far. Tuttle snuck in two songs she wrote herself, both of which are about the Bay area in some way.

The one bummer for me with this concert is that the version I've managed to find included almost no banter between songs. Only two brief comments were kept. I'm 99% sure she talked a lot more, especially since she did so for the recording I have of the third concert in this series. If anyone has a fuller version that includes the banter, please let me know and I'll add that in.

This concert recording is 54 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
02 Didn't I - Darondo
03 Basket Case - Green Day
04 Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez
06 Take the Journey - Molly Tuttle
07 Golden State of Mind - Molly Tuttle
08 Olympia, WA - Rancid
09 The Joker - Steve Miller Band
10 Diamond Joe - Laurie Lewis

15 San Francisco Days - Chris Isaak
16 Disco Man - Remi Wolf
17 Lodi - Creedence Clearwater Revival
18 Standing on the Moon - Grateful Dead
19 Everyday People - Sly and the Family Stone

And here's the usual song list:

01 White Rabbit (Molly Tuttle)
02 Didn't I (Molly Tuttle)
03 Basket Case (Molly Tuttle)
04 Diamonds and Rust (Molly Tuttle)
05 talk (Molly Tuttle)
06 Take the Journey (Molly Tuttle)

I only found one of the exact performances here on YouTube, her version of "Didn't I." I took a screenshot of the video to make the album cover art. The quality was rather low-res, but I figure it was worth it to get something from the concert in question. Later, I improved the quality with the use of the Krea AI program.

Molly Tuttle - Home Concerts, Volume 2, Nashville, TN, 9-3-2020 to 12-20-2020

I just posted an album of Molly Tuttle's solo acoustic home concert performances in early 2020. This continues where that left off, with the same from the rest of 2020. If you don't know who she is (and I'd never heard of her until about two weeks ago), please check out that post for more information about her. Suffice to say that she's a remarkable guitar player, an excellent vocalist, and a talented songwriter. In my opinion, if popularity were based on actual musical talent, she should be a big star already.

As with Volume 1, everything here is officially unreleased, and generally comes from YouTube videos of home performances done when most musicians were socially distancing during the worst months of the coronavirus pandemic. Also like that volume, nearly all the songs here consist just of Tuttle on acoustic guitar and/or vocals. And also like that volume, I'd guess about half of the songs here are originals and half are cover versions.

If you're interested in a talented relatively young musician, I suggest you give this album a try. I think it's even stronger than Volume 1. (By the way, this one contains the cover of the Rolling Stones song "She's a Rainbow" that I praised in my comments from that volume.)

This album is 46 minutes long.

The cover art photo appears to be a promotional photo from either 2019 or 2020.

Molly Tuttle - Home Concerts, Volume 1, Nashville, TN, 1-6-2020 to 9-3-2020

Here's an artist I only recently discovered and am jazzed about. I was wanting to learn the Rolling Stones song "She's a Rainbow" on guitar, and I happened to stumble across a YouTube video of her playing the song in a solo acoustic format. I was so impressed that I went looking for other songs she did, and found myself even more impressed. She's a guitar playing virtuoso, to the point that she won the IMBA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Guitar Player of the Year award two years in a row, in 2017 and 2018. But that's not all. She's an excellent vocalist, and a talented songwriter too. What's not to like?

Here's the "She's a Rainbow" video that I mentioned above. It's a good place to start if you want to get into her music. It starts out relatively normally, but wait until she starts soloing on her guitar. Damn, I wish I could play like that!

Molly Tuttle performs "She's A Rainbow" by The Rolling Stones from home - YouTube

By the way, if you don't like bluegrass, don't be turned off by my mention of the word "bluegrass" in that first paragraph. As I write this in 2021, Tuttle is 28 years old. She started out mostly doing bluegrass, but her musical style has evolved and diversified. Her latest album, "...but I'd rather be with you," released in 2020, is an all-covers album. On that, she does songs by the punk band Rancid, the alt rock bands the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Nationals, as well as the Grateful Dead, Cat Stevens, and more. There's very little overt bluegrass on it at all, but more of an indirect influence in her guitar playing style.

I plan on posting a few albums from her. But I'm a lover of acoustic music in general, and I'm most impressed by her solo acoustic playing, so I'm starting with a collection of her playing in that solo acoustic style. I missed her home concert material from the height of the 2020 pandemic, but I retroactively went back and found two albums worth of songs she did from that year. All of them were recorded at home from this or that Internet channel or benefit concert or the like. All of them are officially unreleased, but I only selected the ones that have very good to excellent sound quality.

You'll find a few songs here that are bluegrass-based instrumentals, but only a few. I like those, because she impresses with her guitar playing speed and melodicism. But most are songs she sings that cover a range of styles. I'd guesstimate about half are covers and half are originals.

As an aside, if you checked out the "She's a Rainbow" video linked to above, you may have noticed she's completely bald in that. That puzzled me (since she wasn't bald in most other videos I saw of her) until I found she has a rare condition that has left her completely hairless. She wears a variety of wigs nearly all the time, causing her hair style to drastically change with each different wig, but I guess occasionally she doesn't bother. You can learn more about her here at her Wikipedia page:

I'm not sure when or where the cover photo is from, but I've found it with some articles about her that date to the early part of 2020.
