Suzanne Vega - Close-Up on Suzanne Vega Album (2012) (A Mike Solof Guest Post)

This was an idea of guest poster Mike Solof. Between 2010 and 2012, Suzanne Vega rerecorded many of her earlier songs in acoustic mode, and then released them as four albums, each with different themes. Mike noticed that all of the songs from her 1985 self-titled debut album were included. So he gathered them all, then reordered them to the same order as the original album. Finally, he added "Left of Center," which was only released on a movie soundtrack in 1986.

The result is an alternate version of her 1985, with a more acoustic sound. So it's just a nice option if you want to hear that album in a different way sometimes.

As usual, Mike has more info (and photos) in the PDF file included with the download.

This album is 42 minutes long.

For the album cover, Mike and I wanted something similar to the original album cover, but different. That one had a black and white photo of Vega in the middle, with the names of the songs on the sides. I colorized the photo, using the Kolorize program. Then I enlarged it instead of keeping the song titles. Finally, I made some changes to the text.

Suzanne Vega - BBC Sessions, Volume 6: In Concert, BBC Radio Theatre, London, Britain, 10-13-1998

Here's the sixth, and so far last, BBC album performed by Suzanne Vega. This one is a BBC concert from 1998.

Volume 5 in this series was a concert from early 1997. Not much had changed in the year and a half since that one except that Vega had just released a greatest hits album the month before the concert, called "Tried and True: The Best of Suzanne Vega." That had a couple of new songs on it, and she performed one of them here, "Book and Cover." Otherwise, she generally played her best known songs from her previous albums.

I had to do a little bit of cleaning up. For instance, there were a couple of songs where the audience applause got suddenly cut off at the end. For instance, I added some extra cheering at the end of the last song, since it ended after only a couple of seconds. But other than that, this unreleased recording sounds very good.

Vega didn't talk much between songs, except she had a long story before the song "Gypsy."

I'm surprised that I haven't been able to find any BBC concerts by her since 1998. But she's about to release a new album for the first time in a long time in a week from now (I write this in late April 2025). So hopefully she'll go on tour and get more exposure soon.

This album is 54 minutes long.

Suzanne Vega: BBC Sessions, Volume 5: In Concert, Shepherd's Bush Empire, London, Britain, 2-11-1997

Here's another album of singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega performing for the BBC. This time, it's a concert from 1997.

In late 1996, Vega released the studio album "Nine Objects of Desire." This concert was from the tour supporting that album. Naturally, many of the songs performed are from that album.

Overall, the sound quality is very good. However, there were some concerning gaps. A chunk of the middle of the song "Caramel," was missing, about a minute. The second half of the last song, "Gypsy," was also missing. Furthermore, the start of "Marlene on the Wall" was missing. I generally filled these gaps by using portions of versions recorded at the "Sessions at West 54th" TV show that same year. That's why those three songs have "[Edit]" in their titles. Additionally, some of the audience cheering between songs didn't seem to line up, meaning the cheering of the end of one song didn't match with the start of the next one. I tried to fix that by adding more cheering. But I suspect some songs could be missing, plus there could be missing banter. So if anyone has more of this concert, let me know, so I can add it in. But at least what is here should sound fine, after my fixes.

This unreleased album is 54 minutes long.

Suzanne Vega - BBC Sessions, Volume 4: 1991-2023

Here's another album of Suzanne Vega performing for the BBC. This time, it's a collection of studio sessions.

As you can see from the title, this deals with a very long chronological era, 22 years, from 1991 to 2023. So this is a grab bag of lots of different things. Everything here is unreleased, except for tracks 5 and 6, which came out on a B-side to the song "99.9F" in 1992.

The first four songs are from a concert at the 1991 Cambridge Folk Festival. Maybe the BBC broadcast more of her performance, but I could only find these songs. I removed the applause at the ends of the songs using the MVSEP program, like I did with a few other live songs on this album.

The next four songs, tracks 5 to 8, are from a 1992 studio session. As mentioned above, two of them were released on a B-side. Tracks 9 to 11 are from an appearance on a BBC TV show in 1993. Track 12, an acappella version of "Tom's Diner," is from another BBC TV show, in 1994. Tracks 13 and 14 are from yet another BBC TV show, "Later... with Jools Holland," in 1997.

After that, there's a very big chronological jump, to 2014, for track 15. That's from the BBC Folk Awards show that year. Then track 16, "Marlene on the Wall," is from the Glastonbury Festival in 2022. She did a whole set, but if there's a worthy recording of it, I couldn't find it. This is the one song the BBC posted on YouTube. Finally, the last three songs are from a 2023 BBC "Piano Room" session. That includes a cover of the Blondie classic "Dreaming," plus a song Vega wrote about the Ukraine war that started in 2021, "Last Train from Mariupol." And there's a second version of "Tom's Diner." I included both because they're very different from each other, with this one being backed by an orchestra.

There probably are some other BBC sessions from this 22 year time period that I'd missed. (Plus I didn't find anything interesting from before 1991.) If you have them, please let me know and I'll add them in.

This album is an hour and two minutes long.

Suzanne Vega - BBC Sessions, Volume 3: In Concert, Dominion Theatre, London, Britain, 6-1-1990

Here's a third album of Suzanne Vega performing for the BBC. Like this first two, it's a BBC concert. This time, it's from 1990.

When I first posted this, all I could find was a partial version that was 38 minutes long and had some issues, such as fake applause added, the wrong song order, and no banter between songs. But a couple of days after I posted it, a commenter named Brian sent me the entire show. This is much, much better. So I completely redid the post with the new version.

In 1990, Vega release the studio album "Days of Open Hand." I had previously posted a 1989 BBC concert by her, but this one differs significantly by including lots of songs from the then-new album. It also includes a great cover of "Beyond Belief," my favorite Elvis Costello song.

The BBC often edits concerts down to an hour or less. But at least once, the BBC broadcast this entire concert. I know this because the first song in the complete version Brian sent me had a BBC DJ talking over the start of the song, mentioning that even the opening act (Brian Kennedy) was broadcast as well. As I often do, I used the UVR5 audio editing program to get rid of that DJ talk. That's why that song has "[Edit]" in the title.

Two songs near the end, "The Queen and the Soldier" and "Tom's Diner," also were edited. That's because there was some static here and there during those songs, probably from trouble with the radio reception. Luckily, it only affected those two songs, and both of them happened to be acoustic or acappella. Using UVR5 again, I discovered that nearly all the static appeared on the drum track. I simply erased that, since there were no drums otherwise. That's why those two have "[Edit]" in their titles too.

This album is an hour and 18 minutes long.

Suzanne Vega - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-16-1989

Back in the summer of 2023, I posted a BBC album by Suzanne Vega, but then forgot to follow up with more. Finally, here's another one.

This is from the big annual Glastonbury Festival, though perhaps it wasn't so big back in the 1980s. As I write this in 2025, Vega has performed at this festival a surprising number of times. Seven times in all so far: 1989, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2022. However, the only BBC recording I can find from her is this 1989. That's also surprising, since the BBC didn't broadcast many sets back then, and has broadcast more and more as time has gone on. So if anyone has any of her other Glastonbury sets, please pass them on so I can post those too.

I read an interview with Vega many years after this concert in which she was asked: "What is the closest you've come to death?" She responded, "A death threat at Glastonbury Festival in 1989. The police told me not to go on, but I said I had to because I was headlining. So I wore a bullet-proof vest. It seemed unlikely that I would be assassinated, but it was shocking and very stressful." Given that, I give her kudos for putting on a remarkably poised performance here.

Vega was probably close to the peak of her popularity around this time. Her 1988 album "Solitude Standing" did especially well in the the British charts, making it to Number Two there, compared to Number 11 in the U.S.

This concert is unreleased, but the sound quality is excellent.

This album is 47 minutes long.

UPDATE: On March 9, 2025, I redid the mp3 download file. I added one song I'd missed, "Undertow." Plus, it turned out "Ironbound - Fancy Poultry" had been misnamed.

All I know is this photo is from 1989. However, I saw a really poor quality photo of her at Glastonbury this year, and I think she's wearing the same jeans jacket, so it could be from this show.

Various Artists - Prince's Trust Rock Gala, Wembley Arena, London, Britain, 6-20-1986

Hmmm. I could have sworn I'd posted this months ago. I'd posted the 1982 Prince's Trust concert a while back. I was getting to post the next one in the series, from 1987, when I did a search and noticed this one wasn't here. So now you'll get two in a row, as I'll be posting the 1987 one today as well.

Prince Charles, the crown prince of Britain at the time, ran a charity to help troubled youths. It's still going as I write this in 2024, and Charles has finally become king.

These concerts didn't happen every year. In fact, I don't think there was any after the 1982 one I mentioned until this one, although there was a Dire Straits concert in 1985 that benefited the charity. This one, though, was truly a star-studded event. Perhaps inspired by Live Aid in 1985, the big names showed up in droves.

In fact, I find this concert frustrating, because so much big name talent was underused. The concerts started with sets by Big Country, Suzanne Vega, and Level 42. I definitely like Big Country and Suzanne Vega (whereas Level 42, not so much), and I've posted albums by them here. But it seems very odd to me that they got to play four or five songs each, while much bigger names like Sting, Mark Knopfler, George Michael, David Bowie, and Mick Jagger got less than one full song, since they only appeared as part of duets. Very strange.

That said, what there is here is quite good. It's just that I wish there had been a lot more of it. But as far as I can tell, this was the complete concert. I guess the organizers had to keep things relatively short because the concert was broadcast live on TV and radio in Britain. I gather the reason Big Country, Suzanne Vega, and Level 42 had such surprisingly long sets was because one purpose of the show was to showcase new talent. This is a trend with the other Prince's Trust concerts I'm aware of. At least in this year the new acts would end up being pretty good. (Some other years weren't so lucky.)

One special aspect of this concert is how much the big stars in the second half of the show performed together. You don't really see it in the artist credits on each song. For instance, typically, Phil Collins played drums, Elton John played piano, Midge Ure of Ultravox played rhythm guitar, and Eric Clapton or Mark Knoplfer played lead guitar. At one point, you can hear Rod Stewart joke about how happy he is to finally get Elton John in his backing band. But that's not all. You really the watch the video this (the whole thing can be found on YouTube as I type this) to see all the stars backing each other.

The highlights are many, too many for me to describe. But I'll point out that the biggest start of the evening had to be Paul McCartney, who closed the show. Keep in mind that, from the perspective of 1986, McCartney hadn't barely played in any concerts since the 1970s. Starting in 1989 he would go on a world tour, and he would tour often after that. But he'd only made three other concert appearances in the 1980s prior to this, and each one was just for a couple of songs at most. (For instance, he played one song for Live Aid in 1985.)

By the way, note that there's a flaw with the duet of "Dancing in the Street" by David Bowie and Mick Jagger. For some reason, Bowie's vocals are way down in the mix. I currently don't have the means to fix that, since it's tricky with them singing together most of the time. But with audio editing technology advancing recently, it probably will be fixable eventually.

Note that various versions of this concert have been officially released, both on audio and video. But as far as I can tell, none of them are complete. The audio version, for instance, is only the length of a single album. So there's a lot more music here.

This album is two hours and 17 minutes long.

Suzanne Vega - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: In Concert, London School of Economics, London, Britain, 10-24-1985

Given the trouble that I detailed in my last post, I'm going to switch my posting strategy for a while to see how things shake out. For the next couple of weeks, at least, I'm going to be careful to only post 100 percent unreleased material, and see if any of that gets flagged. But, one way or another, I do plan on getting back to posting stray tracks collections and the like.

I also intend to start a YouTube channel and post some unreleased albums there, so at least I'll have a known second home on the Internet in case this one suddenly goes down. I hope to post more about that very soon.

So, with that in mind, here's something that I believe is completely unreleased. It's also high time I post something from American singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega. So far, the only music I've posted from her is a Songwriter's Circle episode in which she was one of the three featured artists.

This concert goes way back to the beginning of her recorded music career it took place just a few months after the release of her debut album, simply entitled "Suzanne Vega." It's a lot longer than that album, so it has many songs that were unreleased by her at the time, including some of her best known songs, such as "Tom's Diner," "Luka," and "Left of Center."

This album is an hour and 12 minutes long.

Richard Thompson, Suzanne Vega & Loudon Wainwright III - Songwriters' Circle, BBC, London, Britain, 9-26-2010

In my constant search for more BBC material, I've come across some unusual things. Such as this. It's a concert where Richard Thompson, Suzanne Vega, and Loudon Wainwright III were all on stage the whole time together and took turns playing their own songs. But the other two didn't just sit and listen when it wasn't their turn. They'd practiced some in advance, or often sang or played guitar. Thompson, in particular, is an excellent lead guitar player and frequently added his guitar skills to the songs by the other two. It's a very interesting three-way musical interaction by three great musical artists.

Apparently, this "songwriter's circle" is something the BBC has been doing since at least the 1990s. The format is always the same, bringing three musicians together to take turns playing songs. I'll try to post more, but these are hard to find since they don't get the interest a show by just one artist does, yet they aren't various artists shows with tons of different acts either. If you have any others, please let me know.

This show is officially unreleased. But, as you'd expect from the BBC, the sound quality is excellent. You can watch the whole thing on YouTube.

This album is an hour and four minutes long.
