Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle & Toni, Volume 15: 2023-2024

Since 2020, I've posted the Sunday Mornings album series of cover versions by Reina del Cid and Toni Lindgren. But since I posted the most recent album in this series (the 14th!), the main singer-songwriter in this duo, Reina del Cid, decided to change her stage name to Elle Cordova. That was her real name all along, and "Reina del Cid" was just a nickname. Of course, that's her right, and I want to respect that, just as, say, "John Cougar" turned into "John Cougar Mellencamp" and then finally "John Mellencamp."

But I thought it would be strange to have some albums posted under the name "Reina del Cid and Toni Lindgren" and other albums under the name "Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren," so I've just finished renaming ALL of their previous albums. That meant renaming all the songs and changing all the cover art. It was a pain in the rear, but now it's done. So you may well want to redownload all the previous albums, to get with what hopefully will be the permanent name going forward. Note also that they're calling their Sunday morning postings "Sunday Mornings with Elle and Toni," so that's what I'm using as well.

With that out of the way, let me get to this album. That's not much to say that hasn't been already said about previous albums in this series. As usual, it's all unreleased cover versions taken for the duo's YouTube page (which, by the way, is now simply called "Elle and Toni"). Most of the time, just the duo performs on the songs, with occasional extra guests. But for three of the songs, it's just Toni Lindgren, who is stepping up as a lead singer slightly more often.

This album is 48 minutes long.

Here are the original artists for each song:

01 Never Going Back Again - Fleetwood Mac
02 Clay Pigeons - Blaze Foley / John Prine
03 Your Smiling Face - James Taylor
04 Cuckoo's Nest - traditional
05 Brand New Key - Melanie

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle & Toni, Volume 14: 2022-2023

It's a slow process that only happens once or twice a year, but once again I've collected the latest cover songs YouTube performances by Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren. As usual, they perform mostly classic cover versions as an acoustic duo in their charming, low-key style. May this series go on forever.

Hopefully, after 13 previous volumes, you know the deal, so I don't have to say much. There's not much different with this volume, except you may note that some of the songs are done with various collaborators, such as Josh Turner, Carson McKee, Alana, and Kent Nishimura. That includes one song, "Into the Great Wide Open," that's a rare case of Toni Lindgren singing the lead vocals. She also sings lead on "Dire Wolf."

This album is 47 minutes long.

Here are the original artists for each song:

01 Save Me - Aimee Mann
02 Lovin' You - Dolly Parton
03 When You Say Nothing at All - Keith Whitley / Alison Krauss

11 Love Hurts - Everly Brothers
12 The Sound of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle & Toni, Volume 13: 2021-2022

Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren have been putting out acoustic covers of great songs most every Sunday for years. Lately that's slowed down a bit, as they tend to do more originals and more covers just for paid subscribers, but they're still going. I'm getting closer to caught up to current day.

Like usual, the songs chosen are from all over, with the only link being that they're all great songs. (Okay, maybe not "Maxwell's Silver Hammer," one of my least liked Beatles songs, but they do a nice version here.)

The last song is the well known patriotic song "My Country 'Tis of Thee," but with altered lyrics by Cordova as a commentary on the U.S. Supreme Court's June 2022 decision to overturn the Roe vs. Wade nationwide right to have an abortion. I thought it was excellent even though it blurs the line on what a cover is. If you don't like it, you can easily remove it since it's the last track.

This album is 44 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists that made the songs famous:

01 I've Just Seen a Face - Beatles
02 Buckets of Rain - Bob Dylan
03 Cold, Cold Heart - Hank Williams
04 The Christmas Song - Raveonettes
05 Maxwell's Silver Hammer - Beatles
06 Amie - Pure Prairie League
07 Ooh Las Vegas - Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris
08 Strange Magic - Electric Light Orchestra
09 Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears
10 You Don't Know Me - Ray Charles
11 Slip Sliding Away - Paul Simon
12 Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver
13 America [My Country 'Tis of Thee] [Land of Inequity] - Samuel Francis Smith

Here's the usual song list:

01 I've Just Seen a Face (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
02 Buckets of Rain (Toni Lindgren)
03 Cold, Cold Heart (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
04 The Christmas Song (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
05 Maxwell's Silver Hammer (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle & Toni, Volume 12: 2021

I have been gradually catching up to the present day with this "Sunday Mornings" series of Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren performing acoustic cover songs. I'm not fully caught up yet, but I'm getting close. If you've missed this series until now, it's never too late to join in.

As I've mentioned with previous volumes, one thing I like out of this series is how they mix doing covers of famous songs with little known but still high quality songs, so I get to learn new songs through them. For instance, I otherwise never would have heard of "Come Back Home," originally done by Trampled by Turtles. But in this album, the rarity that really impressed me is "I'm Gonna Be an Engineer," originally written by Peggy Seeger, sister of Pete Seeger. It's probably the best song about sexism that I've ever heard.

This album is 45 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Right Down the Line - Gerry Rafferty
02 The Lucky One - Alison Krauss
03 First Day of My Life - Bright Eyes
04 Raglan Road - Luke Kelly & the Dubliners
05 Sleep Walk [Instrumental] - Santo & Johnny
06 Demon in Disguise - David Bromberg
07 Romeo's Tune - Steve Forbert
08 Ain't Goin' Down Till the Sun Comes Up - Garth Brooks
09 Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House
10 I'm Gonna Be an Engineer - Peggy Seeger
11 Come Back Home - Trampled by Turtles
12 Not Fade Away - Buddy Holly
13 Sweet Dreams [Are Made of This] - Eurymithics

And here's the usual song list:

01 Right Down the Line (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
02 The Lucky One (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
03 First Day of My Life (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
04 Raglan Road (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
05 Sleep Walk [Instrumental] (Toni Lindgren)
06 Demon in Disguise (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
07 Romeo's Tune (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
08 Ain't Goin' Down Till the Sun Comes Up (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
09 Don't Dream It's Over (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
10 I'm Gonna Be an Engineer (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle & Toni, Volume 11: 2020-2021

I've posted a lot of albums of Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren playing acoustic versions of cover songs on Sunday mornings. They started way back in 2013, and have been putting out a new cover version on what I'd guess is about every other Sunday for all the time. (Sometimes they do original songs, which I'm not including here, and other times they put out song just for paid subscribers.)

This album is typical of their Sunday cover songs. It's an enjoyable mixture of classic favorites with more obscure but still very good songs. And they continue to show a lot of range. How many "folksy" artists like them would do a cover of Queen's "Killer Queen," or "All That She Wants" by Ace of Base? But it all fits.

This album is 45 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artist for each song:

01 Fish and Whistle - John Prine
02 All That She Wants - Ace of Base
03 Jingle Bells - James Lord Pierpont
04 Queen Bee - Taj Mahal
05 Deal - Grateful Dead
06 What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
07 Whiskey River - Willie Nelson
08 Old Home Place - Dillards
09 Ship of Fools - Grateful Dead
10 Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
11 Octopus's Garden - Beatles
12 Walls - Tom Petty
13 If I Could Build My Whole World Around You - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
14 Killer Queen - Queen

Here's the usual song list:

01 Fish and Whistle (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
02 All That She Wants (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
03 Jingle Bells (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
04 Queen Bee (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
05 Deal (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
06 What a Wonderful World (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
07 Whiskey River (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
08 Old Home Place (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
09 Ship of Fools (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
10 Solsbury Hill (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
11 Octopus's Garden (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren with Travis Worth)
12 Walls (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren with Travis Worth)
13 If I Could Build My Whole World Around You (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle and Toni, Volume 10: 2020

I'm still slowly trying to catch up with the present day when it comes to Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren and their tradition of doing new cover songs most every Sunday morning. I'm getting closer by posting this album - I still have a couple more to get fully caught up.

I don't have much to say that I haven't said for the other albums in this series. If you've liked those, you'll like this one. Once again, there's a nice mix of well-known classics and more obscure tunes.

One thing worth noting is that a couple of the songs - "Werewolves of London" and "Monster Mash" were done near Halloween, 2020, so they have that theme going. For "Monster Mash," the duo even dressed up in Halloween costumes for their performance.

This album is 45 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Tequila [Instrumental] - Champs
02 Wayfaring Stranger - traditional
03 When I Paint My Masterpiece - Bob Dylan
04 King of the Road - Roger Miller
05 Mama Said - Shirelles
06 Rocket Man [I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time] - Elton John
07 Dancing in the Moonlight - King Harvest
08 Stranded - Van Morrison
09 Alberta - Doc Watson
10 Two Sisters [The Wind and the Rain] - traditional
11 Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon
12 Monster Mash - Bobby 'Boris' Pickett
13 The Times They Are A-Changin' - Bob Dylan

Here's the usual song list:

01 Tequila [Instrumental] (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
02 Wayfaring Stranger (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
03 When I Paint My Masterpiece (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
04 King of the Road (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Morning Live, Minneapolis, MN, 8-8-2021

I've posted a lot of music from Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren in recent months. But all of that has been their acoustic covers of (mostly) famous songs. However, Elle Cordova in particular is a talented songwriter, and she's put out some albums that are all or mostly all originals.

Most every Sunday, the duo posts a new cover song they've done. But this last Sunday, two days ago as I write this, they did a surprise short home concert instead. So here it is for you. Most of the songs are originals, with these exceptions: "Ain't Goin' Down till the Sun Comes Up," "Boogie Shoes," "Angel from Montgomery," and "Don't Dream It's Over."

If you've been enjoying their covers but haven't heard any of their originals yet, this is a good way to get into that aspect of their music. As with their Sunday cover songs, everything here is performed with just the two of them, usually on acoustic guitars, though the multi-talented Toni Lindgren occasionally switches to or doubles up on other instruments, such as harmonica.

This album is 41 minutes long. The concert actually was about 49 minutes long, but I cut out a lot of the talking between songs. Most of the stuff I cut out had to do with technical problems, including several minutes at the beginning when they were having trouble with their recording equipment. I also cut out most of their credits to donors, since that doesn't mean anything except for the specific people mentioned. I tried to keep everything else though. I also boosted the volume of the banter, since it was rather low compared to the music.

01 talk (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
02 This One's Gonna Hurt (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
03 talk (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
04 Runner in the Sun (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
05 talk (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
06 Ain't Goin' Down till the Sun Comes Up (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
07 talk (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
08 Boogie Shoes (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
09 talk (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
10 Cassiopeia (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
11 talk (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
12 Angel from Montgomery (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
13 talk (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
14 Bernadette (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
15 talk (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
16 Shot 'Em Dead (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
17 talk (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
18 Whiskey Down (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
19 talk (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
20 Don't Dream It's Over (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle and Toni, Volume 9: 2020

This is another album of Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren doing their usual good stuff, coming up with a new cover version most every Sunday morning, year after year. With this album we're well in the year 2020, but I still have two and a half more albums of songs to get to before I'm caught up to the present day (as I write this in July 2021).

There's not much else to say, I think. Hopefully you've listened to some of the previous albums of theirs I've posted here already, so you already know about their low-key charm. As usual, there's a nice mix of famous songs like "Don't Dream It's Over" and "Landslide" mixed with lesser known ones, such as "How Mountain Girls Can Love" and "Goldmine."

This album is 44 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 You've Got a Friend in Me - Randy Newman
02 The Gambler - Kenny Rogers
03 It's My Lazy Day - Smiley Burnette
04 Old Home Place - Dillards

For the cover photo, I took a screenshot of one of the YouTube videos of the songs featured here. In this case, they performed "The Gambler" at a busy street corner in Las Vegas, since that kind of fit the theme of the song. (By the way, as a result of the location, the sound quality on this one song is a bit rougher than the others on the album.)

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle and Toni, Volume 8: 2019-2020

Here's the latest in the long series of Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren playing cover songs once every Sunday morning (except for the weeks when their down their own material). Since I've posted a bunch of these already, I'll skip any explanation, hoping you know the drill. As usual, it's a great bunch of songs, done in their usual low-key, charming manner.

The only other comment I want to make is that if you look closely at the credits, two of the songs are with Elle Cordova and Mary Spender, and another is with Elle Cordova with the Petersens. I'm glad to see those latter two working together, since I've posted some albums by the Petersens on their own.

This album is 45 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Just What I Needed - Cars
02 Look at Miss Ohio - Gillian Welch

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle and Toni, Volume 7: 2019

If you haven't discovered the fun of Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren playing cover songs, it's never too late to join in. This is yet more of the same good stuff.

As I've mentioned before, this duo has a mellow and sublime charm. A case in point is their cover on this album of Led Zeppelin's "Ramble On." First off, anyone who does a cover of "Ramble On" is okay in my book. :) But it's notable lead vocalist Elle Cordova doesn't even attempt to hit the very high notes of Led Zeppelin's lead singer Robert Plant, nor does she try to imitate his charismatic style. Instead, she sings the song in a low-key, folky way, which also turns out to be very nice. It's like that with everything they do.

As usual, the duo has a nice mix of really famous songs with obscurities that should be better known. For instance, personally, I didn't know the songs here by the Tallest Man on Earth, the Wood Brothers, or the Punch Brothers, and I doubt you know them either. But, if you're the kind of person who likes the music at this blog, chances are you do know more than half of the songs overall. The cover of "Into the Music" is especially sublime.

This album is 44 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 The Gardener - Tallest Man on Earth
02 You're Gonna Live Forever in Me - John Mayer
03 Hearts and Bones - Paul Simon
04 Harvest Moon - Neil Young
05 Blue Moon - Billy Eckstine / Marcels
06 Luckiest Man - Wood Brothers
07 Rye Whiskey - Punch Brothers
08 Ramble On - Led Zeppelin
09 Bad, Bad Leroy Brown - Jim Croce
10 [Sittin' On] The Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
11 Down at the Twist and Shout - Mary Chapin Carpenter
12 Into the Mystic - Van Morrison

Here's the usual song list:

01 The Gardener (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
02 You're Gonna Live Forever in Me (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
03 Hearts and Bones (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren with Ben Abrahamson)
04 Harvest Moon (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren with Josh Turner & Carson McKee)
05 Blue Moon (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle and Toni, Volume 6: 2018-2019

Here's the next in my long series of acoustic covers albums by Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren. Please see the previous albums in this series for more about them and their style of music.

As I've mentioned previously, one thing I really like about their cover versions is how they mix performing well-known, classic songs with lesser known ones that are often just as good. With each album, there are at least a couple of songs that are new to me. That's especially the case with this album. There are a handful of unusual songs this time around.

One great example is their version of "NFL on Fox Theme." They took this melody, which should be familiar to anyone who watches professional football games on TV, and turned it into kind of a bluegrass hoedown! Pretty clever and fun.

This album is 46 minutes long.

This is the list of the original artists for each song:

01 No Rain - Blind Melon
02 Sea of Love - Phil Phillips
03 NFL on Fox Theme [Instrumental] - Scott Schrerer

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle and Toni, Volume 5: 2018

I just posted an album of Morgan James doing all acoustic cover versions. That reminds me of Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren, so here's another album of them doing all acoustic cover versions too.

If you've listened to the previous four covers albums of theirs that I've posted, this is more of the same good stuff. (And I have lots more to post.) But this album stands out for the number of lesser known songs, at least for me. I've previously mentioned that one thing I appreciate about this duo's covers are that they have a knack of picking excellent obscure songs and mixing them in with classics. About half of the songs here are like that.

As an extreme example, note the song "High Five" by the band Sigrid. I highly doubt anyone here has heard of her, unless maybe if they live in Norway. She's a Norwegian singer who was so new at the time of this album that she hadn't even released her debut album yet. But Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren heard this song while they were on tour in Norway, and liked it so much that they decided to perform their own version of it.

This album is 46 minutes long.

Here are the original artists for each song:

01 Post War - M. Ward
02 Sugar, We're Goin Down - Fall Out Boy
03 High Five - Sigrid
04 Bells of Harlem - Dave Rawlings Machine
05 Butter and Eggs [Instrumental] - Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge
06 Stuck in the Middle with You - Stealers Wheel
07 Silver Lining - Rilo Kiley
08 Make You Feel My Love - Bob Dylan
09 Rocky Top - Osborne Brothers
10 Sister Golden Hair - America
11 Don't Know Why - Norah Jones
12 Hold You in My Arms - Ray LaMontagne
13 Ellie's Song [Through the Valley] - Shawn James & the Shapeshifters

Here's the usual song list:

01 Post War (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
02 Sugar, We're Goin Down (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
03 High Five (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
04 Bells of Harlem (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
05 Butter and Eggs [Instrumental] (Toni Lindgren & Josh Turner)
06 Stuck in the Middle with You (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren with Josh Turner & Carson McKee)
07 Silver Lining (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
08 Make You Feel My Love (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
09 Rocky Top (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
10 Sister Golden Hair (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)

This duo likes to record their Sunday Mornings videos in interesting locations if they have the opportunity. This is a screenshot from a video recorded overlooking the Mississippi River as it passes through Minnesota in 2018.

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle and Toni, Volume 4: 2017-2018

Here's more from the fabulous acoustic duo Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren, because I still have so many more albums to post from them. As I've mentioned previously, they release a new performance on YouTube every Sunday morning, and they've been doing it very regularly for years. Sometimes they do originals in that series, but this series just collects their covers. Almost always, it's just the two of them and their acoustic guitars.

On thing I really like about this series is that it's an appealing mix of well-known classics and obscure gems. Sure, everybody knows "You Make Loving Fun" by Fleetwood Mac or "Mercedes Benz" by Janis Joplin, but I'll best most of you have never heard the songs they do here by Charlie Parr, Norman Blake, the Magnetic Fields, and so on. And I'm tickled pink they took the theme song to the "Inspector Gadget" TV show and turned it into a bluegrass hoedown!

If you haven't checked them out yet, why not give 'em a try?

This album is 43 minutes long.

Here's a list of the artists who made these songs famous:

01 Over the Red Cedar - Charlie Parr
02 Misirlou [Instrumental] - Jan August / Dick Dale
03 You Belong to Me - Jo Stafford / Patti Page
04 You Make Loving Fun - Fleetwood Mac
05 One Fine Day - Chiffons
06 Dooley - Dillards
07 Church Street Blues - Norman Blake
08 Dear Someone - Gillian Welch
09 All My Little Words - Magnetic Fields
10 Tennessee Jed - Grateful Dead
11 Inspector Gadget Theme [Instrumental] - Shuki Levy
12 Faded Love - Bob Wills
13 Mercedes Benz - Janis Joplin
14 She's Got You - Patsy Cline
15 Praise You - Fat Boy Slim

Here's the usual song list:

01 Over the Red Cedar (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
02 Misirlou [Instrumental] (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
03 You Belong to Me (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
04 You Make Loving Fun (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
05 One Fine Day (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle and Toni, Volume 3: 2017

I've already posted two albums of acoustic covers by Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren. To reiterate what I've said with those past albums, this singer-songwriter duo has put out a bunch of albums of original material, but in addition to that, they've also been posting one new video on YouTube per week for years, and the vast majority of those have been covers. I've been collecting them and posting them here. I hope you like them, because I do, and there's a lot more where those came from.

If you liked the previous albums in this series, you'll like this one too. Elle Cordova does all the lead vocals, and while her voice is low key instead of dramatic and high ranged, there's something about it that I find compelling and distinctive. Toni Lindgren adds a lot with her tasty lead guitar, as well as backing vocals.

One thing I really like about this duo is the range and quality of their cover choices. Most of the songs are well known classics, but it seems there are always some obscure gems I'd missed on each album. And how many musicians who mostly do folky songs would have the chutspah to cover KC and the Sunshine Band as well?

This album is 43 minutes long.

01 Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry
02 What Would I Do - Ray Charles
03 Sugaree - Grateful Dead
04 Irish Rover - J. M. Crofts
05 Engine Trouble - Last Revel
06 I've Been All Around This World [Hang Me, Oh Hang Me] - traditional
07 Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard - Paul Simon
08 Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers
09 Slip Slide on By - Valerie June
10 Boogie Shoes - KC & the Sunshine Band
11 Dream a Little Dream of Me - Ozzie Nelson / Mamas & the Papas
12 Coconut - Harry Nilsson
13 Brandy [You're a Fine Girl] - Looking Glass
14 Wildflowers - Tom Petty
15 Ginseng Sullivan - Norman Blake / Tony Rice Unit

Here's the usual song list:

01 Johnny B. Goode (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
02 What Would I Do (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
03 Sugaree (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
04 Irish Rover (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
05 Engine Trouble (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren with the Last Revel)
06 I've Been All Around This World [Hang Me, Oh Hang Me] (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
07 Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
08 Ain't No Sunshine (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
09 Slip Slide on By (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
10 Boogie Shoes (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
11 Dream a Little Dream of Me (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
12 Coconut (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
13 Brandy [You're a Fine Girl] (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
14 Wildflowers (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
15 Ginseng Sullivan (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)

The cover art is a screenshot from their performance of "Brandy." They recorded the song while Cordova drove their van! I wonder if that was kind of a tribute to Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers and their videos of cover songs recording in a van that was being driven at the time. (If you like this, you should check them out as this blog well.)

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle and Toni, Volume 2: 2016-2017

A few weeks ago, I posted the first of many albums I plan on posting featuring acoustic cover versions by Elle Cordova and Toni Lindgren. Don't feel bad if you've never heard of them. I hadn't until last month, and they're not that well known. But Elle Cordova is a talented songwriter (check out her original albums), and together they do really nice, mellow versions of great songs from a wide variety of genres.

As with the last album I posted, most of these songs are fairly well known, but they also have some unexpected choices that work out well. For instance, if you look at their general roots rock vibe, you wouldn't expect a Beyonce song, but they play one here. Ditto with a Prince song. They also do a song by David Rawlings, who I'd never heard of before. So it's a good mix of the familiar and less familiar.

Note that the first album I posted in this series dealt with the years 2013 to 2015, and this one deals with 2016 to 2017. In fact, there was only one song from 2015 on the previous album, and there is over a year and a half gap between the last song on that album and the first one here. Partially, that's because they did some original songs during that time for their weekly YouTube releases, which don't fit the covers format here. But it also seems they suspended their weekly releases for a while. Happily, since they've resumed in 2016, they've been doing it consistently all the way until the present day.

This album is 45 minutes long.

Here is a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Jambalaya (On the Bayou) - Hank Williams
02 Tennessee Waltz - Patti Page
03 English Tea - Paul McCartney
04 I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You - Colin Hay
05 XO - Beyonce
06 Mountain Dew - traditional
07 Doctor My Eyes - Jackson Browne
08 I Will Always Love You - Dolly Parton / Whitney Houston
09 Step into Christmas - Elton John
10 When You Were Mine - Prince
11 Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You - Bob Dylan
12 Ruby - David Rawlings
13 Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms - traditional

Here is the usual song list:

01 Jambalaya [On the Bayou] (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
02 Tennessee Waltz (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
03 English Tea (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)
04 I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You (Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren)

The cover photo comes from a YouTube video recorded in Las Vegas in 2017. Fittingly for the location, they did the song "The Gambler." Unfortunately, I felt I couldn't include this version due to the poor sound quality, thanks to it being recorded in a crowded location. It was almost the only one I had to completely reject due to sound quality issues. But don't worry, because they did another version later that was recorded much better, so that appears on a later album in this series.

Elle Cordova & Toni Lindgren - Sunday Mornings with Elle & Toni, Volume 1: 2013-2015

So the other day I was searching for something on YouTube, and I came across a home concert by a musical act I'd never heard of, Reina del Cid. Since I've been posting a lot of home concerts here, I clicked on it to see if it was up my alley, and I discovered that it definitely was. So much so that I began looking for more music by the same artist, and now I'm starting to post some of that.

It turns out that Reina del Cid is the stage name of the singer-songwriter Rachelle Cordova. Note: in 2024, she changed her name to Elle Cordova, and her duo name to Elle and Toni. So I've followed suit and renamed these albums. I will attempt to stick to the newer name from this point forward in this text.

She's 32 years old as I write this in 2020, and has released four albums since 2012. Virtually everything she's done has been in partnership with Toni Lindgren, who is an excellent lead guitarist, and well as backing vocalist. I consider Lindgren's guitar playing kind of the "secret sauce" that takes their performances to the next level.

The official Elle and Toni albums consist of her original songs, which are very good. I've been tracking those albums down and enjoying them. The music is in an acoustic mode. Sometimes there's bass and drums, plus other occasional instruments, but those are done acoustically as well, usually with a light touch. For the songs here, the vast majority are with just Cordova on vocals and acoustic guitar, while Lundgren plays lead on another acoustic guitar. I really enjoy their mellow sound. Cordova's lead vocals don't wow with extraordinary range or timbre or anything like that, but there's a certain "je ne sais quoi" that I enjoy.

These two musicians have had a nice tradition going. Starting in 2013, they've been posting one video per week on YouTube, which they call "Sunday Mornings with Elle and Toni." Naturally, the videos come out every Sunday. They've played many originals over the years, but at a rate of one song per week, I don't think even Neil Young or Bruce Springsteen could keep up with new songs every single week. So they're mostly covers, and I've only collected the covers. If you want to hear the originals, very much in the same style, check out the studio albums, or look at the Elle and Toni YouTube page.

One thing I very much enjoy about this duo is their taste in music. They play songs by a wide variety of artists, so wide that after doing this since 2013, they rarely play more than one song by the same artist. They specialize in singer-songwriter-esque rock and folk, but they range all over the place, including country and bluegrass. I've discovered a bunch of excellent songs I'd previously missed due to their cover versions.

I plan on posting a whole series of albums that gathers up the covers from their "Sunday Mornings" YouTube page. Note that in recent years, Elle and Toni have created a Patreon webpage, which you can find here:

https://www.patreon.com/reinadelcid

Some of the weekly videos are still posted for free on YouTube, while others are only available through the Patreon page, and you have to pay to get access to those. I don't want to play a part in ruining that revenue stream, so I'll only be posting the videos that are freely available on YouTube. The songs are in chronological order from when they were posted, which appears to almost always have been the same day they were performed.

This album is 44 minutes long.

Here are the original artists for each song:

01 Auld Lang Syne - traditional
02 Red Is the Rose - traditional
03 Tupelo Honey - Van Morrison
04 Who Put the Bomp [In the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp] - Barry Mann

10 Beyond the Sea - Bobby Darrin
11 21st of May - Nickel Creek
