Woodstock '94, Winston Farm, Saugerties, NY, 8-12-1994 to 8-14-1994 - Day 3, Part 17: Peter Gabriel

The 17th and final album from the Woodstock '94 Festival is a set by Peter Gabriel. That also makes it the final album of the entire festival.

I'm not sure why Gabriel was chosen as the final act of the festival. It's not the most enviable spot. For instance, Jimi Hendrix closed out the 1969 Woodstock Festival, but by the time he came on, the vast majority of the crowd had left! I don't know if that was the case for this festival or not. Probably way more were there, because one can see the video of this set, and the audience still looks huge. 

In any case, Gabriel may have gotten the spot because he had more involvement in the festival than most acts. I imagine he had a large role in the WOMAD world music section of the festival that took place earlier on Day Three, and he even performed a bit during that. After all, WOMAD is its own annual musical festival and/or tour that Gabriel has been deeply involved in.

By this point in his career, Gabriel usually took quite a few years between albums. His most recent album at the time was "Us," released in 1992. I guess he was still touring to support that, and he played a bunch of songs from that album. As an aside, one of Gabriel's backing singers at the time was Paula Cole. She would have a couple of big hits of her own a couple of years later. She has a prominent vocal role in the first song, "Come Talk to Me."

Youssou N’Dour performed at the festival on Day Two. He helped sing two songs in this set as well, "Shaking the Tree" and "In Your Eyes." He was on the studio recordings for both.

Woodstock '94, Winston Farm, Saugerties, NY, 8-12-1994 to 8-14-1994 - Day 3, Part 16: Red Hot Chili Peppers

The 16th album from Day Three of the Woodstock '94 Festival is a set by the band Red Hot Chili Peppers.

First off, I have to say check out the album cover for this one. I love the giant light bulb head costumes. It so happens I found a Yahoo News article that extensively talked about the costumes, so I'll post some key quotes from that.

Dave Navarro, who had just joined the band as lead guitarist, later recalled, "I think it's no surprise that it was very uncomfortable in that. See, we were at a rehearsal, and [the band's lead singer] Anthony [Kiedis] had this concept: 'What if we had light bulbs on our heads?' 'Yeah, that’s cool. Like, we used to do the flame hats. This is much simpler. There’s no flames!' And, it was totally Spinal Tap. Like, he drew it on a napkin or on a piece of paper, and we handed it to these guys, and none of us saw the actual prop until we were ten minutes away from going onstage, in front of a festival audience, cameras, satellite productions. And, we put these things on, and they each were about 60 pounds. And they didn’t stay on your head straight, you know? And then, in addition to that, I had to walk out and debut with these guys. I’d been in the band for about five minutes."

The band's drummer Chad Smith later recalled, "Dude, that wasn’t well thought out, was it? It was so Spinal Tap. We're standing in the dark, and we're each trying to get our [light bulbs] on, like, 'How’s yours look?' And, 'Mine won’t light up!' And, you know, we had these jumpsuits — we looked like baked potatoes with these big light bulbs. It wasn’t bad for me, because I sat there. I’m not moving around, you know? I'm just sitting. It wasn’t that bad. But, you guys... I'm just laughing the whole time. It was a moment. It was a real moment."

Navarro further recalled, "I look back on that moment as a highlight, just in the sense that it was so outrageous and so funny. And they do look pretty cool in the pictures. I’m sure it was a neat thing. But like, in terms of just total ability to perform in those things, it was very difficult, and I think that there’s a reason why we only did one song in those. ... What I will tell you, an added layer of weirdness for me personally that day was that my previous [Jane’s Addiction] bandmate Perry Farrell, they took the stage as Porno for Pyros right before us; I parted ways with Jane’s Addiction and they went on to do Porno for Pyros. And we were playing, I think we were closing the stage we were at and they went on before us, and I hadn’t seen [Jane’s drummer] Stephen [Perkins] or Perry for years prior to that... It was just like an added element of, you know, crazy slices of life bouncing around in my brain, while I'm about to do probably the biggest show I've ever done, with a lot of eyes on me, waiting for me to either f*ck it up or pull it off. I think I landed somewhere in the middle, but it was great, overall, in terms of experiences as one of the better ones of my life, for sure."

As mentioned in the quotes, the band only had the costumes on for the first song. However, later in their set, they changed clothes again. All of them dressed up in clothes similar to what Jimi Hendrix wore in the 1969 Woodstock Festival.

The band broke into the mainstream with their 1991 album "Blood Sugar Sex Magik," which sold eight million copies in the U.S. alone, and 13 million worldwide. However, they had trouble following it up. They wouldn't release their next album, "One Hot Minute," until late 1995. At the time of this festival, they were going in and out of the studio recording that album. They played three songs from it: "Aeroplane," "Pea," and "Warped."

Woodstock '94, Winston Farm, Saugerties, NY, 8-12-1994 to 8-14-1994 - Day 3, Part 15: Bob Dylan

The 15th album from Day Three of the Woodstock '94 Festival was a set by legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan.

The Wikipedia entry about this festival has a good paragraph about the Dylan set, so I'll quote it in full here:

"After being injured in a traffic accident in 1966 and his subsequent disappearance from the popular music scene, Bob Dylan declined to go to the original Woodstock Festival of 1969, even though he lived in the area at the time. He set off for the Isle of Wight Festival the day the Woodstock festival started and performed at Woodside Bay on August 31, 1969. Dylan, however, did accept an invitation to perform at Woodstock '94 and was introduced with the phrase: 'We waited twenty-five years to hear this. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Bob Dylan.' Although he was an hour and a half late to his performance, his set was considered one of the greater moments of the festival by various critics and represented the beginning of another new phase in his lengthy career. Uncharacteristically for the time, Dylan played lead guitar in a more rock-oriented electric set."

I would add to that that Dylan was in the middle of a songwriting dry spell when this festival occurred. His last album of original material had been released in 1990, "Under the Red Sky." He released acoustic folk albums made up entirely of cover songs in 1992 and 1993. He would eventually come roaring back with a strong album of original material in 1997. But for this festival, nearly all the songs he played were classics that were at least a decade old. The only exception was "God Knows," from his 1990 album. He also said absolutely nothing between the songs.

The 14th album from Day Three of the Woodstock '94 Festival is a set by the band Porno for Pyros.

Perry Ferrell lead the band Jane's Addiction from 1985 to 1991. They grew increasingly popular, with their 1990 album selling two million copies in the U.S. But they broke up due to the usual drug and ego problems many bands have. 

Ferrell, the main singer and songwriter, along with the drummer Stephen Perkins, recruited two new members and formed the band Porno for Pyros. They put out the album "Porno for Pyros" in 1993. Ferrell was really committed to his new band, because he didn't play ANY Jane's Addiction songs in this concert. However, the band was already working on their second album (which would come out as "Good God's Urge" in 1995), and they played a few songs that would eventually appear on that. 

They also opened their set with a rather unusual but interesting Jimi Hendrix cover, "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)." 

Porno for Pyros would last long after the release of their second album. Instead, Ferrell would alternate between solo projects, Jane's Addiction reunions, and other band projects.

Woodstock '94, Winston Farm, Saugerties, NY, 8-12-1994 to 8-14-1994 - Day 3, Part 13: Spin Doctors

The thirteenth album from Day Three of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival is a set my the band Spin Doctors.

Spin Doctors was formed in 1989, and they released their debut album, “Pocket Full of Kryptonite,” in 1991. At first, sales were very slow. But they picked up a 1992 and continue to grow in 1993. Eventually, it sold 5 million copies in the U.S. 

Their second album, “Turn It Upside Down,” was released in June 1994, not long before this festival. It sold one million copies in the U.S., which was nothing to sneeze at, but still disappointment compared to the debut album. There are subsequent albums sold even less than that, but the band is still in existence as I write this in 2024.

As you would expect, the band played songs from their first and second albums, but they finished with a cover of the Joni Mitchell classic “Woodstock,” for obvious reasons.

Woodstock '94, Winston Farm, Saugerties, NY, 8-12-1994 to 8-14-1994 - Day 3, Part 12: Traffic

The twelfth album from Day Three of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival is a set by the British band Traffic, led by lead singer Steve Winwood.

Traffic existed from 1967 to 1974. Traffic then reunited in 1994, but the reunion was short lived, only long enough for a studio album named “Far from Home,” and a supporting tour. What made it a Traffic reunion was the fact that Winwood was reunited with Jim Capaldi, who was an original member of the band and most of the songs with Winwood. No other band members from the bands, original era took part in the reunion. 

This festival just happened to take place during the reunion tour. Otherwise it probably wouldn’t have been a Winwood solo concert. Because it was a Traffic reunion though, all the songs were from the bands 1960s and 1970s heyday instead of Winwood solo hits. The one exception was the song “Mozambique,” an instrumental from the band’s reunion album.

The 11th album from Day Three of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival is a set by the Allman Brothers Band.

This band went through a lot of highs and lows in their long career. 1994 was a good year. The band released the studio album “Where It All Begins,” a few months before this concert. It was the third studio they did in the early 1990s. Lead guitarist and sometime lead vocalist was also still a key part of the band. He would part with the band at the end of the decade.

I don’t remember why I put “[Edit]” in the name of “Statesboro Blues.” But it probably was due to a glitch part of the way through the song, which I fixed.

The tenth album from Day Three of the Woodstock ‘Z94 Festival is a set by the band Arrested Development.

The band made a big splash with their 1992 debut album, entitled “Three Years, Five Months and Two Days in the Life Of…” It spawned a few hits and sold four million copies in the US alone. Unfortunately for them, their second studio album, “Zingalamaduni,” released a couple of months before this festival, had no hits and sold well less than a million copies in the US. The band seemed to have trouble with their direction, because they broke up after the tour to support that album. They would reunite in 2000 and stay together after that, but they never came close to the success of their first album.

This album is 44 minutes long.

Woodstock '94, Winston Farm, Saugerties, NY, 8-12-1994 to 8-14-1994 - Day 3, Part 9: Jimmy Cliff

The ninth album from Day Three of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival was a set by Jamaican reggae star Jimmy Cliff. 

Technically, this was billed as “Jimmy Cliff’s All Star Reggae Jam featuring Rita Marley, Eek-a-Mouse, and Shabba Ranks.” However, I listened to the set, and I watched most of the video of it on YouTube, and I didn’t see any sign of Marley or Ranks. Wow, since Marley was the wife of reggae, legend Bob Marley, I’m sure she would have been introduced at some point, but she was not. Eek-a-Mouse sang lead vocals on one song, “Love Me,” and participated in another song, the Bob Marley classic “One Love.” Furthermore, relatively unknown female vocalist at the time, Diane King, sand on two songs, “One Love” again, and also another Bob Marley classic, “Stir It Up.”

Other than that, it was a fairly long set, one of the longest of the entire festival, and Cliff sang most of it.

At the time, new albums weren’t getting much attention or sales. However, he had a big hit in 1992 with a cover of “I Can See Clearly Now,” which was one of the first reggae hits in the US back in 1972. Not surprisingly, he performed that near the end of this set.

The eighth act from Day Three of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival is a set by the band Santana.

Lead guitarist, Carlos Santana did his usual Latin rock thing for decades to about the same level of critical and commercial success, until he had a big surge in record sales in the late 1990s. The band’s most recent album prior to this festival was “Milagro,” released in 1992. That album just missed reaching the top 100 in the US album charts. But that didn’t matter much because the band mostly relied on songs from their deep music catalog, including songs from recent albums.

This album is an hour and 50 minutes long. I believe this was the longest set of the entire festival.

The next album from Day Three of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival is a set by the Neville Brothers.

(Note that I just realized I posted the last two albums out of order. Green Day came before Paul Rodgers, not after.)

The Neville Brothers were a soul and funk group in existence from 1976 until 2015. However, the five brothers that made up the core of the group, had their own solo careers and careers with other bands, so the intensity of this band’s activity went up and down a lot. They were especially active in the early 1990s, which was their commercial and critical peak. Prior to this festival, their most recent album was a live album, “Live on Planet Earth,” released in April 1994.

This album is an hour and nine minutes long.

The fifth album from Day Three of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival was a set by the band Green Day. 

An important thing to keep in mind is that Green Day Was only moderately popular at the time of this concert. They would become much more popular later. So I presume that’s why they had spot relatively early in the day.

I am still on vacation and it’s hard for me to type much on my cell phone. So I am going to paste in a big chunk of text from Wikipedia to explain more more about what happened during this set:

 

"[The festival's problems with mud] culminated with Green Day's performance, during which guitarist and lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong started a mudfight with the crowd during their song 'Paper Lanterns.' In the documentary 'VH1 Behind the Music: Green Day,' bassist Mike Dirnt was mistaken for one of the fans jumping on stage and was spear-tackled by a security guard, knocking out one of his teeth. It was this incident that caused Dirnt to need emergency orthodontia. A gag order was put in place regarding this incident. Due to the now-infamous mudfight and Dirnt's injury, Woodstock quickly propelled Green Day's then recently released album Dookie into success."

On a different note, I believe this set is the only one from the festival that has been officially released in fall. It was later added to a deluxe version of the “Dookie” album. I am including it here in order to present as much of the festivals as possible.

Woodstock '94, Winston Farm, Saugerties, NY, 8-12-1994 to 8-14-1994 - Day 3, Part 6: Paul Rodgers

The fifth album from Day Three of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival is a set by Paul Rodgers, the former lead singer of the bands Free, Bad Company, and the Firm.

Rodgers got some help from some famous musical associates. Most prominently, he was joined for three of the last four songs in the set by Slash, The lead guitarist for the band Guns N’ Roses. That band is originally formed, was near its death throes. So while they were invited to play, they didn’t play.

He was also supported for the entire set by Neal Schon, The former lead guitarist for Santana and Journey. He also was supported by bassist Andy Fraser, Who was a key band mate in the band Free. Finally, the drummer was Jason Bonham, who is most famous for being the son of drummer John Bonham, of Led Zeppelin.

In 1993, Rodgers put out an EP of cover versions of Jimi Hendrix songs. He also put out an entire album that mostly consisted of covers of Muddy Waters songs. So in addition to performing songs made famous by Free and Bad Company, he performed songs here by Hendrix and Muddy Waters.

The fourth album from Day Three of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival is Hassan Hakmoun and Zahar.

The star here was Hakmoun, who is from Morocco. Zahar is the name of his backing band. He was one of four acts from the WOMAD section of the festival, which had a focus on world music acts. 

Hakmoun had a lot of musical connections with Peter Gabriel. So perhaps it’s not too surprising that he was introduced by Gabriel and Gabriel also joined in singing on the final song of this set. Also, an interesting fact is that he married Paula Cole, who was a backing singer on a Gabriel tour when they met. But unfortunately the marriage only lasted a few years.

The third act presented here for Day Three of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival was Geoffrey Oryema. He was a musician from Uganda. He died of cancer in 2018 at the age of 65.

If you have never heard of him, don’t feel bad because he is one of the lesser known acts from this festival. He was included as part of a commendable effort to have more world music acts. He was part of a four act sequence called WOMAD. This was and still is a continuing series of tours started by Peter Gabriel designed to bring more world music to Western audiences. 

Out of the four WOMAD acts, I have only included two: this one, and the one I will be posting next. The two I didn’t include, Xalam and the Jeffrey Trio, are even less well known, their sets were shorter, and I just didn’t like them that much. I did like the two I included though. So if you want to try some new world music, give this one a shot. Be warned though that the songs are generally not in English.

The second album from Day Three of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival is a set by Gil Scott-Heron.

Note that I once tried to post an album by this artist and it got taken down due to copyright issues. So this one may not last here for long. But I’m trying to post it anyway in order to hopefully present the entire festival. Get it while you can.

Personally, I really like the music of this artist. He helped start rap music back in the early 1970s. His political and social commentary is very insightful. However, he was always more of a critical success than a commercial success. So that’s probably why he only had a relatively short set that also was early early on Day Three.

The first act of Day Three of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival was John Sebastian. He was one of the stars of the 1969 Woodstock Festival. My guess is that he was invited to this festival to help provide a link to the original festival. In terms of his musical career, he didn’t have much success after having a number one song in 1976 with “Welcome Back,” the theme from the “Welcome Back Kotter” TV show. He often went many years between albums, which came out on minor record labels. He had many hits in the 1960s as the leader of the band the Lovin’ Spoonful. However, he chose to only play one well-known song by that band, “Daydream.”

Aerosmith was one of the biggest acts of the festival. Not only had they been a popular rock since the early 1970s, but their most recent album “Get a Grip ,” sold 20 million copies worldwide.

I’m writing this at the airport so I hope this works. I also am likely to keep my write-ups short while I am on vacation.

Metallica was one of the headliners for Day Two of the festival, going on stage late in the evening, ending their set near midnight.

In 1991, the band released an album simply titled “Metallica.” It was still heavy metal, but it had a more accessible sound. It went on to be one of the best selling albums of all time, selling 30 million copies worldwide and 17 million just in the US. They would not release another studio album until 1996. The album was so big that they were still touring to support it at the time of the Woodstock ‘94 Festival. It was reported that the audience responded positively to their set, even though they were one of the few heavy metal acts at the festival.

There was one musical act to come after Metallica. Then it is on to the third and last day of the festival.

Woodstock '94, Winston Farm, Saugerties, NY, 8-12-1994 to 8-14-1994 - Day 2, Part 12: Nine Inch Nails

The twelfth album from Day Two of the Woodstock '94 Festival was set by Nine Inch Nails. (Note there are two more Day Two sets after this, and Day Three has 17 in total!)

Nine Inch Nails sounded drastically different than the folkie vibes of the act on stage right before them, Crosby, Stills and Nash. Their sound is abrasive, with Wikipedia calling it "industrial rock" or even "industrial metal."

Nine Inch Nails released their second album, "The Downward Spiral," in March 1994. It was a critical and commercial success, going on to sell four million copies in the U.S. Most of the songs in this set are from that album.

A pre-show incident between band mates Trent Reznor and Danny Lohner left Nine Inch Nails covered with mud for their entire performance. Reznor later explained in an interview, "On the way to the stage, there was a little accident. It turned into kind of a mud wrestling thing that escalated into a full-scale mud riot. I accidentally tripped Danny and pushed his face into the mud. And then he retaliated by body-slamming me."
