Covered: Randy Newman, Volume 3: 1999-2025

Here's the third and final volume of the "Covered" series for Randy Newman.

Newman's usual solo albums have been released less frequently as he gets older, which is usually the case for songwriters. By now, 2026, he averages about one album a decade. But unlike a lot of aging songwriters, he's kept his standards high. Pretty much every album he's made has been critically praised.

But he's been much busier and prolific with his other career, composing soundtracks for Hollywood movies. I mentioned in the write-up for "Volume 2" that his career got a big boost starting in 1995, when he composed the soundtrack for the first "Toy Story" movie. That led him to a new line of work making soundtracks for blockbuster movies for kids, such as the other "Toy Story" movies (including "Toy Story 6," released in 2026), "Cars," "A Bug's Life," "Monsters, Inc.," and more. Most of those are a mix of songs with lyrics and background music. I didn't find a lot of songs from these movies sung by others that fit this collection, but there are a few in this volume.

Some others are from earlier in his career. For instance, "Burn On," a 1972 song based on a true incident of the Cuyahoga River, which runs through Cleveland, Ohio, catching fire in 1969 due to excessive pollution.

All the songs in all three volumes were officially released, except for the last two on this volume. "I'm Dead (But I Don't Know It)" is from Randy Newman's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2013. It's sung by Newman and Don Henley. The album ends with "I Love L.A.," one of Newman's better known songs. I had trouble finding a worthy version, until I found this one. It comes from the 2025 Grammy Awards ceremony, and features a bunch of stars singing together.

This album is 49 minutes long.

01 When She Loved Me (Sarah McLachlan)
02 If I Didn't Have You (Billy Crystal & John Goodman)
03 Every Time It Rains (Joe Cocker)

Dionne Warwick - Dionne, Burt and Hal: The Definitive Songbook, Volume 7: 1987-2012 (A Mike Solof Guest Post)

I'm back from my two week vacation from Peru. It got off to a rough start due to the plane flight there, which I posted about. But everything else since then went great, with no more problems. :) I even had good weather the whole time, despite it being the rainy season there.

Here's the last album in a series that contains all the songs written by Hal David and/or Burt Bacharach and sung by Dionne Warwick. Though note that there's a bonus album of sorts still to come that will be explained later.

As I mentioned in Volume 6, the Bacharach-David songwriting partnership broke up around 1973, and they didn't collaborate for a long time after that. The second half of Volume 6 consisted entirely of songs written by Bacharach and another successful songwriter, Carole Bayer Sager. (In fact, Bacharach and Sager were married for a few years around this time).

The Bacharach and Sager collaboration continued for a little while. The first songs are from a 1987, and are all co-written by those two. One song, "Love Power," was a hit. After that, there are a bunch of songs from 1989 to 2011, one song per year with many years skipped. "Sunny Weather Lover" from 1993 is a key song here, because it's the first song Bacharach and David wrote together since about 1972. However, that was a rare collaboration. Their songwriting partnership didn't reignite after that. (They also co-wrote two songs for the 2000 movie "Isn't She Great," but Warwick didn't sing them.) Furthermore, both of them were simply getting older and didn't write songs nearly as often as they used to.

So the rest of the songs were written by Bacharach with others or David with others. For instance, "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" was a Number One hit in the U.S. for Christopher Cross in 1981, and was written by Bacharach with Sager and two others. Track 101 is an unreleased live version by Warwick recorded in 2005.

The last four songs are from a 2012 album called "Now." It was billed as a celebration of Bacharach and David songs. However, it mostly consisted of rerecordings of old hits. The four new songs, presented here, were written by either Bacharach with others or David with others. For instance, "99 Miles from L.A." was written by David with Albert Hammond, and was a hit for Hammond in 1975.

Hal David died in 2012, so that ended the chance for any more songs written by both of them. Bacharach died in 2023.

While I was on vacation, a commenter noted that a song, "(Theme From) The Valley of the Dolls" was included on Volume 4 of this series, despite neither Bacharach nor David being involved in writing it. Now that I'm back home, I was able to repost that album with that song removed. That also means that the numbering of all the songs after that has been fixed as well. So you might want to redownload Volumes 4, 5, and 6 if you're a stickler about such things. Also, since I had complaints about the cover art for Volume 1, I've posted an alternate version of the cover at the bottom of my write-up for that album that uses the original black and white photo, in case anyone wants that.

Thanks again to Mike Solof for putting this together.

This album is one hour long.

Covered: Neil Young, Volume 6: 2007-2011

Modern technology is amazing: I’m writing this while sitting in an eco lodge deep in the Amazon jungle in Peru (with a huge rhino beetle on the floor about five feet from me). Anyway, not much time to write, but here’s another Neil Young “Covered” album, since I have more of those to post than Dionne Warwick albums while I’m on vacation.

As usual, here's the write up by Fabio from Rio:

By the late 2000s, Neil Young's catalog had entered yet another phase of rediscovery. While earlier generations of alternative rock musicians had embraced his influence during the grunge years, a new wave of indie-folk and Americana performers began revisiting his songs with quieter, more introspective arrangements. At the same time, the Internet was transforming how music circulated among fans: live recordings, tribute performances, and previously obscure interpretations were now easier to find and share among the global community of "Rusties." Young himself remained prolific, releasing ambitious projects such as "Chrome Dreams II" and "Le Noise." The covers in this volume reflect that diverse landscape - a mixture of indie artists, roots musicians and veteran performers exploring both well-known classics and deep cuts from across Young's long career.

Note that Fabio wrote individual paragraphs about all the songs in this volume. To see that, please look at the Word file added to the download zip file. Thanks again to Fabio for his help putting these albums together.

This album is an hour and four minutes long.

Covered: Shel Silverstein, Volume 2: 1974-2010

Here's the second and final volume celebrating the songwriting of Shel Silverstein for the "Covered" series.

As with all these Covered albums, the songs are in loose chronological order, usually by year. Silverstein was active writing lots of new songs in the 1970s, and a lot of cover versions resulted. Some of his songs were hits, especially on the country charts. But, typically, his songs were more memorable and interesting than the usual hit material. Not many songwriters could write children's songs, funny songs, and even erotic songs. (Hopefully not all in the same song though!)

Silverstein gradually slowed his songwriting, as people do. He only released one album of new songs after 1985. So a lot of the later songs here were actually originally written earlier, sometimes much earlier. He died of a heart attack in 1999, at the age of 68.

It just occurred to me that I don't think I included a link to his Wikipedia page in the Volume 1 write-up, so here it is:

Shel Silverstein - Wikipedia

To be honest, I know the well known songs written by Silverstein, but not all the lesser known ones. But he's the type of songwriter who wrote quirky gems. So if any of you know of some excellent songs he wrote that I left out, and especially covers of them, please let me know and I'll consider adding them in.

This album is 46 minutes long.

01 Marie Laveau (Bobby Bare)
02 Queen of the Silver Dollar (Emmylou Harris)

10 I'm Checkin' Out (Meryl Streep)
11 Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out (Tori Amos)

I don't know when or where the cover photo was taken. Clearly though, he's older than in the Volume 1 photo, judging from the grey in his beard. The original photo was a black and white one, showing him in a crouching pose in front of some trees. I stripped out the background. Then I used the Kolorize program to colorize the picture.

Covered: Tom Waits, Volume 3: 2004-2012 (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

Here's "Volume 3" out of four volumes made for the "Covered" series, showcasing the songs of Tom Waits.

Like the other volumes in this series, this was mostly put together by Fabio from Rio. He did all the heavy lifting in finding the source material, and I only helped to winnow down the songs to a reasonable number. Fabio also wrote the notes for each volume, so here's his notes for this one:

In the nineties and early 2000s, Waits fused experimental sounds with stark American roots music—blues, gospel, field hollers, and folk. Themes of death, sin, redemption, and rural myth dominate. This allows for covers that, while highlighting their folk or country origins (sometimes deeply buried at the original recordings, but more perceptible when reinterpreted by performers from diverse backgrounds), still keep their darker spirits through melancholic or nihilistic lyrics.

In this volume, the country side of Waits' music is quite perceptible via covers by Elvis Costello, Norah Jones, and Claudia Bettinaglio. One may also feel the sexiness and smoky-room cabaret ambiance at Diana Krall's "Temptation", Monique Maion's "Walking Spanish," and Clara Bellino's "Swordfishtrombone."

Traces of rockabilly and R&B can be found with Mark Lemhouse's "No One Can Forgive Me" and English seventies folk with Plant and Krauss' "Trampled Rose", along with blues and rock tracks like Hart and Bonamassa's "Chocolate Jesus" and Goldheart Assembly's "Clap Hands." Overall, this makes for an eclectic selection, much like the average Tom Waits album. An acoustic, home-demo-like version of "In the Neighborhood" by Peter Gabriel, recorded in 2012 for a benefit album for war-torn regions, closes the volume on a poignant note.

This album is 57 minutes long.

01 Innocent When You Dream (Elvis Costello)
02 Temptation (Diana Krall)
03 Long Way Home (Norah Jones)
04 Big in Japan (Shane Nicholson)
05 Swordfishtrombone (Clara Bellino)

Ray LaMontagne, KT Tunstall, & David Gray - Songwriters' Circle, Bush Hall, London, Britain, 10-22-2010

Here's another episode of the fantastic BBC TV show "Songwriters' Circle." This one is from 2010, and features the singer-songwriters Ray LaMontagne, KT Tunstall, and David Gray. As is the usual with this show, they took turns singing their own songs, backed just by their acoustic guitars (and sometimes each other).

LaMontagne has an interesting back story. He was working at a shoe factory in a small town in Maine, when he heard the song "Treetop Flyer" by Stephen Stills. The song inspired him to quit his job and become a musician, despite having no special interest or background in music at that point. His debut album "Trouble" was released in 2004. It sold half a million copies in the U.S., and the title song was a hit in Britain. His next three albums from 2006 to 2010 also did well, with each one going Gold in the U.S. (Although his sales have slowly declined since then.)

Ray LaMontagne - Wikipedia

I've already posted a lot of music by KT Tunstall, so I don't feel the need to summarize her career here.

David Gray was born in England and mostly raised in Wales. He started out a fairly typical folk singer-songwriter. But his first three albums, released in 1993, 1994 and 1996, didn't stand out or sell well. His fourth album, "White Ladder," released in 1998, was different. It combined the folk style with electronica. At first, it also was basically totally ignored. But it was released in 2000, and began to slowly build momentum, helped by the hit song "Babylon." It ended up doing great in the U.S., selling two and a half million copies. But it did even better in Britain, selling over three million, which is especially impressive considering the U.S. population is four times as large. In fact, according to Wikipedia as I write this in 2026, this album is one of the top 30 best selling albums of all time in Britain!

But he wasn't just a one-album wonder. For instance, his 2002 album "A New Day at Midnight" went Platinum four times over in Britain, and sold half a million copies in the U.S. as well. He's been especially popular in Ireland, where his albums have broken some sales records.

Here's his Wikipedia entry:

David Gray (British musician) - Wikipedia

Unfortunately for all three of the singer-songwriters here, they had a lot more success up to 2010, the year of this concert, than in the years since then. But at least at the time of this concert they were all doing very well.

As is typical for the episodes of this show, the three of them came together for the last song. They chose to sing "Morning of My Life," a well-known early Bee Gees song, even though it never was a big hit.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and seven minutes long.

Justin Currie, Chris Difford, & Boo Hewerdine - Songwriters' Circle, Bush Hall, London, Britain, 10-8-2010

Here's another episode of the excellent BBC TV show "Songwriters' Circle." I'm trying to post all the ones I have sooner rather than later. This one stars Justin Currie, Chris Difford, and Boo Hewerdine.

This is another episode I'm only posting due a musical friend named Peter. A while back, he sent me a bunch of episodes in high-quality video format. I converted this one to audio format and broke it into mp3s. So thank you, Peter.

Justin Currie is the main singer-songwriter in the band Del Amitri. Their biggest selling singles are "Nothing Ever Happens" and "Roll to Me." They were in existence from 1980 to 2002. So Currie was a solo artist at the time of this concert. But the band got back together in 2013, and they are still together as I write this in 2026.

Here's his Wikipedia entry:

Justin Currie - Wikipedia

Chris Difford is one of the two main singer-songwriters in the band Squeeze, along with Glenn Tilbrook. Other band members have come and gone, but those two have been constants. Tilbrook has done the vast majority of the singing, although there are exceptions. For instance, Difford was the lead singer on the song "Cool for Cats," which made it all the way to Number Two in the British singles chart in 1979. Although Difford has remained in Squeeze for over 50 years, and the band is still together as I write this, the band has had some extended breaks. During those times, Difford has had a low-key solo career. By the time of this concert, he had put out three solo albums.

Here's his Wikipedia entry:

Chris Difford - Wikipedia

Boo Hewerdine (whose first name is actually Mark) was the main singer and songwriter in the band the Bible. That band was most successful in the 1980s. But they reformed a couple of times since. They are still together as I write this. He also has a hand a long solo career, releasing over a dozen studio albums. Furthermore, he's written songs for others. For instance, Eddi Reader had a Top Forty hit in Britain with his song "Patience of Angels" (which he performed here).

Here's his Wikipedia entry:

Boo Hewerdine - Wikipedia

Other than that, there's not much else to say. This episode followed the same format of others for the show, with each musician taking turns performing songs, then getting together to sing the final song.

This album is 56 minutes long.

Elvis Costello & Nick Lowe - Costello Sings Lowe - Nick Sings Elvis, Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, CA, 10-1-2010

Here's a really fun concert with Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe taking turns performing songs. But there's a surprise twist that I've never seen in any other concert: instead of singing their own songs, they sang the other guy's songs! Meaning Costello exclusively sung songs written by Lowe, and Lowe exclusively sung songs written by Costello.

I've known about this concert for a long time, but I avoided it due to merely okay sound quality. It comes from an audience boot instead of a soundboard or FM radio broadcast. But it was an unusually good audience boot. Furthermore, with the improvements in audio editing technology in recent years, I was able to make some changes to improve the sound quality. The main thing I did was I ran all the songs through the MVSEP program and got rid of the crowd noise during the songs while keeping the crowd noise at the starts and ends of songs. Now, in my opinion, this sounds just as good as most soundboard boots.

This unique format was only possible because Costello and Lowe have been friends and musical associates for a long, long time. Lowe found suggest first, in the early 1970s, as part of the band Brinsley Schwarz. That band was a big influence on Costello as he was starting out. One can see this in this concert, with Costello singing "Don't Lose Your Grip on Love," a relatively obscure Brinsley Schwarz song from 1972. A key early hit for Costello, "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding," was another Brinsley Schwarz song written by Lowe. Then, when Costello started releasing his own albums, he chose Lowe to be the producer. In fact, Costello's first five albums, from 1977 to 1981, were all produced by Lowe, as well as "Blood and Chocolate" in 1986.

I found a good quote from a Lowe interview, about his early connection to Costello:

"When I was in Brinsley Schwarz, he used to come and see us all the time. He was always there, looking very intense. Even when he was with other people, he always seemed to he standing apart from them. The first time I actually spoke to him was in a pub in Liverpool. He was at the bar, and I thought, 'Well.., there he is again. I'd better buy him a drink.' Because I was famous then, you see. I was in the Brinsleys, man. We were pub rock legends, earning 175 pounds a night. We were big time. And I went over and he just glared at me. Damned unsettling. You know the way he is. Anyway, after that, whenever I saw him, we'd have a drink. I just thought he was a very intense fan. Then he moved to London and we lost touch. And then we started Stiff [Records] and one day I saw him at the local tube station." That renewed contact led to Costello getting his first record contract in 1977.

Since those early days, their paths have crossed many times. For instance, they're frequently toured together, with Lowe usually being the opening act due to Costello being the more famous name. In fact, according to an Elvis Costello wiki I found, they toured together in 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1986,  1987, 1989, 1991, 2000, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2022, and 2023! Lowe has also recorded the Costello songs "Indoor Fireworks" and "Poisoned Rose" on his albums.

But this concert, which was a special charity benefit event, has been the one and only time they sang each other's songs like this. They actually did two shows that evening, and this is the early show. Apparently no recording has emerged of the late show.

Note that a couple of songs were mainly sung by members of the backing band. One such band member, keyboardist Bob Andrews, was actually a member of Brinsley Schwarz way back in the day.

This album is an hour and 25 minutes long.

I'm happy to say the cover photo comes from this exact concert. It wasn't labeled as such, but I found another one from the concert that was blurry and not very good, and it showed them wearing the exact same clothes, same guitars, same hat, etc... For all the text, I copied and pasted from a poster for this concert. That includes the yellow text referring to them as "cracking good eggs."

Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt & Joe Ely - Songwriters' Circle, Bush Hall, London, Britain, 10-15-2010

American singer-songwriter Joe Ely died yesterday, December 15, 2025, of age-related issues. He was 78 years old. It so happens that I'm not very familiar with his music. I've heard good things, but there's just so much music out there, I haven't gotten to everything I'd want to. So I hadn't planned to post anything to mark his passing. But it also just so happens that I had an episode of the BBC TV show "Songwriters' Circle" in which Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, and Joe Ely took turns performing their songs. I figured this was the ideal time to post that, so here it is.

Before I say anything else, I want to give a thanks to a musical friend named Peter. A few weeks ago, he sent me a bunch of high quality full-length videos of this show, including this one. So I plan on posting a few more in the near future, knock on wood. He didn't have all of them, however. Here's a list of the ones I still don't have:

Joan Baez, Matraca Berg & Gretchen Peters
Paul Heaton & Dave Rotheray, Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham, & John Martyn
Allen Toussaint, James Dean Bradfield, & John Grant
Bill Anderson, Clint Black, & Bob DiPiero

If anyone has any of those and wants to share, please do. I've noticed the one with Toussaint, Bradfield and Grant is on YouTube, but only individual songs in no particular order, and no banter between songs. So I'd rather hold out for the whole show with that one.

Another comment before I get to the details of this album: some of the videos that Peter sent me were of episodes I already had. I didn't need to make any changes to the audio for those. However, some of the album covers I made weren't very good, based on low-res YouTube videos. I was able to remake some of the covers, and they look much better now. In fact, I've made at least some changes to all the Songwriters' Circle covers I've posted so far, standardizing the font type and size, and things like that. So I recommend you redownload those. Look to the label on the side of this blog called "Songwriters' Circle." There should be five of them prior to this one.

Okay, getting to the content of this album already, if you look at the cover image, you can probably tell that all three singer-songwriters here had long careers by the time they appeared on this show in 2010. Joe Ely's first album (with the Flatlanders) is from 1972, John Hiatt's first album is from 1974, and Lyle Lovett's first album is from 1986. They all are influenced by folk and country, so their styles fit well together.

As is the usual format for the show, each of them took turns performing songs, then they came together to all perform the last song. However, there were some instances where they backed each other on guitar or backing vocals. I only included that in the song credits if it was significant, such as "Thing Called Love," a Hiatt song where Lovett also had a prominent singing role.

The music is unreleased, and the sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and two minutes long.

01 talk (Joe Ely)

Covered: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Volume 2: 1998-2011

Here's the second out of three albums celebrating the music of songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim. Like the others in this series, Fabio from Rio was more responsible for putting this together than I was. So a very big thanks to him. Due to the fact that he's a Brazilian with deep knowledge of Brazilian music, he knew Jobim covers way better than I did.

Jobim wrote most of his classic songs from the 1950s to the 1970s. He actually died in 1994, of heart and cancer problems at the age of 67. So all the covers here are from after his death, of songs that often were written decades earlier. That's a sign that his songs keep getting covered, long after their first appearances on records.

Fabio and I selected these choices together. We rarely went for the big hit versions, because his songs rarely turned into big hits. But he's had dozens of songs with literally hundreds of cover versions. Typically, Fabio selected a bunch of versions of a given song, then I would listen to them and pick my favorite. If you want to hear more versions, go to the write-up for Volume 1, because Fabio has made six more albums of Jobim covers that you can find there.

Also note that I kept this to versions in English, despite the fact that Jobim wrote nearly all of the original versions of his songs in Portuguese. And I kept my selections to versions with vocals, since there are countless hundreds of instrumental versions of his songs as well. I figured English versions would have more popular appeal for people who aren't that familiar with his music.

This album is 46 minutes long.

01 For All of My Life [Por Toda a Minha Vida] (Eliane Elias)
02 Modinha [Broken Heart] (Paquito D'Rivera & New York Voices)
03 Ela e Carioca [She's a Carioca] (Celso Fonseca)
04 Someone to Light Up My Life [Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce] (Ann Hampton Callaway)
05 No More Blues [Chega de Saudade] (Idea of North)
06 Porpoise [Boto] (Beijbom Kroner Big Band)
07 Song of the Jet [Samba do Aviao] (BR6)
08 Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars [Corcovado] (Diana Krall)
09 I Was Just One More for You [Esperanca Perdida] (Dawn Clement)
10 That Look You Wear [Este Seu Olhar] (Elly Hoyt)

I don't know the details about the cover photo. But based on his appearance and the other photos I saw of him putting this together, I'd guess the picture was taken in the 1980s.

Various Artists- MusiCares Tribute to Neil Young, Los Angeles Convention Center, Los Angeles, CA, 1-29-2010

So far, I've posted three MusiCares tribute concerts. I recently got a request to post this one honoring Neil Young sooner rather than later, so here it is. I still have five more to post after this, so look for those eventually as well.

Tons of talented stars showed up to sing their favorite Neil Young songs. There's a lot of great music here. Unfortunately, there's also some that's missing. This comes from a DVD of the event. Generally speaking, only a small crowd of the rich and famous attend these MusiCares concerts, so bootlegs of them are very rare. We know from media accounts that three songs were performed that weren't included on the DVD. Those are:

"Long May You Run" by Stephen Stills & Sheryl Crow
"Comes a Time" by Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin & Lucinda Williams
"A Man Needs a Maid" by Red Hot Chili Peppers

If anyone has any of those so I can add them, please let me know. I found a video of the Red Hot Chili Peppers song recorded on a cell phone and posted on YouTube, but the sound quality is terrible. I'm guessing a lot of the banter between songs was cut out as well. Actor Jack Black was the emcee, but he's not really heard at all in the recording.

Typically, the person honored in these tributes performs a couple of songs at the end of the concert. But while Neil Young was there, and gave a short speech, it seems he didn't perform any songs.

Here's a good account of the concert by someone who attended:

And Rolling Stone Magazine published a bunch of photos from it, here:

Covered: Hank Williams, Volume 2: 1995-2017

Here's the second part to the "Covered" series about country music legend Hank Williams.

As I said in my write-up for Volume 1, I wanted to make these albums accessible to more than just country music fans. So that's why I mostly chose covers from recent decades, and by the likes of Beck, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Norah Jones, and so on.

The vast majority of these were hits when Williams did them before his death in 1953. While there were a lot of hit cover versions of his songs, these generally were not hits. As I just mentioned, I was striving to get away from country versions, and those were most of the hit versions.

As always with these "Covered" albums, the songs are in loose chronological order, based on the year of release. And, as always, check the mp3 tags for the details.

This album is 45 minutes long.

01 I'm a Long Gone Daddy (The The)
02 I Can't Help It [If I'm Still in Love with You] (Cat Power)
03 [I Heard That] Lonesome Whistle (Beck)
04 I Can't Get You Off of My Mind (Bob Dylan)
05 Alone and Forsaken (Emmylou Harris & Mark Knopfler)
06 You're Gonna Change [Or I'm Gonna Leave] (Tom Petty)
07 Cold, Cold Heart (Norah Jones)
08 Lost Highway (Lee Rocker)
09 Ramblin' Woman (Cat Power)
10 Take These Chains from My Heart (Rosanne Cash)
11 A House of Gold (Patty Griffin)
12 How Many Times Have You Broken My Heart (Norah Jones)
13 Mansion on the Hill (Willie Nelson)

Various Artists - Gershwin Prize for Popular Song Honoring Paul McCartney, White House, Washington, DC, 6-2-2010

I've recently discovered the annual "Gershwin Prize for Popular Song" tribute concerts. Here's probably the best known one, because it honors arguably the most successful songwriter of all time, Paul McCartney.

This concert happened to take place during the presidency of Barack Obama. That was lucky, because he took more of a hands-on approach to concerts like this. He hosted this at the White House and gave McCartney's induction speech. I've seen from other Gershwin Prize concerts that I've found that Obama was the only president to get directly involved in them.

The concert started with a song by McCartney. Then a bunch of musical stars played his songs, with a brief stand-up routine by Jerry Seinfeld included in there. Then McCartney took the stage again. He performed "Ebony and Ivory" with Stevie Wonder, just as they did on the original version in 1981. Apparently, that was the first time McCartney had played that song since 1991. After an induction speech by Obama, McCartney finished the concert with a short set of songs.

This album remains unreleased. The sound quality is excellent. I only had one problem. This concert was broadcast on TV. Near the end of "Hey Jude," there was a voiceover near the end of song, briefly mentioning the next TV show. In order to get rid of it, I had to edit out one round of "na na's," which is why that song has "[Edit]" in its title.

By the way, I stumbled across a Time Magazine article about this concern from way back then. It concluded with the line, "The White House has never hosted a cooler evening." Here's the link if you want to read the whole thing:

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 9: 2010-2018

Yesterday, after posting "BBC Sessions, Volume 10" by Squeeze, it was pointed out to me that I had never posted Volume 9. Oops! I thought for sure that I had, since I had it all ready to go. So here it is now.

I found a couple of BBC concerts Squeeze did during this time period. But to be honest, I was getting a little tired of posting concerts mostly consisting of their old hits. In my opinion, they were still writing good new songs during this time period, and I was more interested in hearing those. So the first seven tracks are from a BBC concert in Newcastle, Britain, in 2010. Tracks 10 to 13 are from the 2016 Glastonbury Festival. Tracks 14 and 15 are from the Biggest Weekend Festival in Perth, Britain, which was broadcast by the BBC, just like the Glastonbury Festival.

So that makes up most of the songs. But there are two others. "Please, Please Me," a cover of the Beatles song, is from a 2013 BBC radio special called "12 Hours to Please Me" that celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' debut album in Britain, "Please, Please Me."

"Cradle to the Grave" is from the Andrew Marr BBC TV show. What's particularly interesting is that the lyrics were changed near the end of the song, just for this version. Here's the new lyrics:

I grew up in social housing
Part of what made Britain great
There are some here who are hell-bent
On the destruction of the welfare state

This seems to be a deliberate snub of David Cameron, prime minister of Britain at the time, who actually was on stage during the performance, because he was another guest on the show! Indeed, as a leader of the right wing Tory party, Cameron took part in that party's destruction of the welfare state that has be steadily and gradually weakening Britain's economy. Kudos to Squeeze to have the balls to sing that right to Cameron's face. Cameron clapped and smiled at the end of the song, probably oblivious about the lyrics.

Everything on this album is unreleased. I used the MVSEP program to remove all the crowd noise, so the songs with cheering fit in with the ones without. There are a couple of lesser known older songs here. But most of the songs are from the band's two albums of new material during this time period, "Cradle to the Grave" in 2015 and "The Knowledge" in 2017.

This album is 47 minutes long.

01 talk (Squeeze)
02 When the Hangover Strikes (Squeeze)
03 talk (Squeeze)
04 It's So Dirty (Squeeze)
05 If It's Love (Squeeze)

The Buggles - The Buggles Live (2004-2023) (A Mike Solof Guest Post)

When guest poster Mike Solof came to me recently with the idea of posting a live album by the Buggles, I have to admit I was pretty surprised. I only knew of the Buggles as a one-hit wonder, "Video Killed the Radio Star," from 1979. But Mike assured me that there's a lot more to this band than that, despite the fact that they only released two albums, one in 1980 and the other in 1981. So I said sure, let's do it, and here we are.

The three original members of the Buggles were only together for a short while because singer and bassist Trevor Horn and keyboardist Geoff Downes were recruited to join the band Yes mere months after the first Buggles album came out. From there, both of them found even more success as producers, as well as being members of other bands. It turns out the original Buggles did no concerts at all, although they did lip-sync on TV a few times.

However, interest in the music of the Buggles remained strong, considering their short existence. In 2004, the three original members reunited briefly to play two songs at a high profile concert celebrating the career so far of Trevor Horn. Those two songs are here, but not in the album proper. Instead, Mike elected to have the videos of them included as bonus tracks.

Then, in 2010, the band got together again for a single concert. But there was no more activity until 2023, when the band finally went on tour for the first time. Most of this album (the first 13 tracks) are from a 2023 concert. The sound quality of those tracks is excellent. The remaining songs (tracks 14 through 18) are from the 2010 concert. The sound quality of those isn't as good. So only the songs not performed in the 2023 concert are included.

If you want to know more, please read Mike's PDF included in the zip download file. I think this album makes a strong case that the Buggles were much more than just a one-hit wonder.

This album is 53 minutes long. Everything here is unreleased.

Neil Diamond with Lulu & Amy McDonald - BBC Sessions, Volume 3: Electric Proms, The Roundhouse, London, Britain, 10-30-2010

Before I dive all the way in with posting the winners of my recent BBC poll, I still have a few BBC albums I want to post of other artists. Here's one I'm finishing up. This is the third and probable last BBC concert by Neil Diamond, unless there are others I don't know about. It's a full concert and has two guest stars: Lulu and Amy McDonald.

Diamond's career peaked in the 1960s and 70s both creatively and commercially. But he had a late critical revival starting with his 2005 album "12 Songs," which was produced by Rick Rubin. This concert took place just a few days before Diamond released the album "Dreams." It consisted entirely of cover versions of famous songs, with the exception of "I'm a Believer," which was a massive hit for the Monkees back in 1967 but was actually written by Diamond. That's why he played covers like "Midnight Train to Georgia" and "Ain't No Sunshine," as well as a slowed down version of "I'm a Believer."

The concert is also unusual for the guest stars. Lulu had a big hit in 1967 with "The Boat that I Row," a song written by Diamond. She sang that here with Diamond, as well as "Oh Me, Oh My (I'm a Fool for You Baby)" another 1960s hit for her that Diamond wasn't involved with. Singer-songwriter Amy McDonald was a guest singer for two songs as well. She sang "Shilo," a song written by Diamond. Then she sang a song she wrote, "This Is the Life." It was a Number One hit in many countries in Europe in 2008, but only a minor hit in Britain and not a hit at all in the U.S. Here's her Wikipedia entry if you want to know more about her:

Amy Macdonald - Wikipedia

Otherwise, the concert was filled with the classic hits you'd expect from Diamond. Lulu returned near the end of the concert to help sing "Sweet Caroline."

This unreleased album is an hour and 37 minutes long.

Covered: Stevie Wonder, Volume 7: 2005-2018

Here is the seventh and last volume of Stevie Wonder's "Covered" series. Just as a reminder, like all the "Covered" albums I post, the emphasis is on the songwriting. So these are all songs written or co-written by Wonder, but performed by others.

By the time period of this album, 2005 to 2018, Wonder's songwriting had slowed way down. In fact, writing this in 2025, Wonder still hasn't released a new studio album since 2005. So all the songs here are covers from earlier years, especially from his golden era of the 1970s. "You Met Your Match" is the oldest song here, from 1968.

Finally, with this volume, the full scope of Wonder's songwriting genius can be seen. Some of his best songs don't show up until this volume. So all seven volumes should be seen as a whole.

Just by chance, I didn't find any covers that I liked best from after 2018. But I'm sure more great covers will emerge in the years to come.

This album is 59 minutes long.

01 I'm Going Left (Eric Clapton)
02 You Haven't Done Nothin' (Joe Cocker)
03 Village Ghetto Land (Jen Chapin)
04 You Met Your Match (Tower of Power)

Norah Jones - PBS Soundstage, St. Ann's Warehouse, New York City, 1-27-2010

The flood of "PBS Soundstage" concerts continues with a 2010 concert by Norah Jones.

In November 2009, Jones released the studio album "The Fall." It was one of her better reviewed albums, and it sold well, selling three million copies worldwide. She went on practically every show that allows musical performances to promote it, including this one.

Most of the songs are from that album. However, at the end she played her two biggest hits ("Don't Know Why" and "Come Away with Me") plus a cover of "Strangers" by the Kinks.

I had a really tough time finding a source for this. As I write this in April 2025, the video can't be found on YouTube, and the audio isn't on any of the usual bootleg sites. But I dug deep and eventually found a way to stream it, recorded the audio as I streamed, then converted those to mp3s.

This album is 52 minutes long.

Paul Weller - BBC Sessions, Volume 16: 2010-2017

Once again, it's time for another Paul Weller BBC album. I'm trying to get through these sooner rather than later so I can focus on posting albums from other musical acts. This time, it's a collection of BBC studio sessions.

All the songs here are unreleased, except for one. The second track, a cover of the Zombies classic "Time of the Season," was included on the deluxe edition of the "More Modern Classics" compilation album.

The first two songs are from different 2010 sessions. Then tracks 3 through 10 are from two sessions in 2012. Tracks 11 and 12 are from a 2015 session. Finally, the last five tracks are from three different sessions in 2017. If you want more details, as always, check the mp3 tags for each song.

Paul Weller - BBC Sessions, Volume 15: In Concert, BBC Radio Theatre, London, Britain, 4-15-2010

Here's yet another Paul Weller album done for the BBC. This time, it's a concert from 2010.

I wasn't sure about posting this concert at first, because the bootleg I found for it was rather short, only 34 minutes long. Then I dug around and discovered it was a longer concert. I couldn't find much more, but I found two more songs that come from his live album "Find the Torch, Burn the Plans." Those are the last two. That gave it a more decent length, so I'm posting it.

But I also discovered that there are a bunch of additional songs performed that I still can't find. So if anyone has those, please let me know and I'll add them in.

This concert took place just four days before the release of his studio album "Wake Up the Nation." So naturally there are several songs from that album here. But I think what's most interesting about this are the three duets he did. Female soul singer Rox helped out on "Wild Wood," and female singer-songwriter Lauren Pritchard helped out on a cover of the classic " How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)." Neither of their careers went very far. Rox put out one album in her career and Pritchard put out two. Finally, Richard Hawley helped out with "No Tears to Cry." He's had a much more successful career, releasing over a dozen albums so far (as I write this in 2025).

This album is 42 minutes long.
