Michael McDonald & Friends - A Tribute to Motown, PBS Soundstage, Nashville, TN, 6-2005

Here is another episode of the great "PBS Soundstage" T.V. show. This one stars, Michael McDonald, but it has a bunch of special guests as well: Billy Preston, Toni Braxton, Take 6, and Indie.Arie. All the songs they performed are covers of Motown classics from the 1960s and 70s.

McDonald has been on the Soundstage show quite a lot. He was a key member of the Doobie Brothers when they hosted the show in 1979. He also hosted it in 2003 with some other guests. And he was a guest on an episode hosted by Kenny Loggins. And I believe he will be on at least one more episode that I have yet to post.

In this case, I would bet the show had him back because of the Motown theme to the episode, meaning that the songs were different from the ones he played on other episodes. At the time he was going through quite a Motown phase. In 2003, he released an all covers album just called "Motown," And in 2004, he released a sequel called "Motown 2." The special guests were not on those albums, with the exception of Toni Braxton. The duet she sang here with McDonald, "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)," also appeared as a duet on his "Motown 2" album.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

An hour and six minutes long.

Various Artists - A Grammy Salute to the Beach Boys, Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, CA, 2-8-2023

A few days ago, a commenter suggested I should post this concert. It so happened that I already had it all ready to go (except for making the cover), which is the case for countless hundreds, if not thousands of albums. But since it was requested, I put it at the top of the pile, and here it is. It's a Grammy salute to the Beach Boys from 2023.

This tribute was shown on prime time television, so that meant it was faced paced, and with lots of guest stars. Famous actor Tom Hanks started things off with a spoken tribute, and actors John Stamos and Drew Carey also had turns to speak.

I found a video of this concert, converted it to audio, and then broke it into mp3s. So I don't think it's circulated as an audio bootleg before. The music is unreleased, and the sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and eleven minutes long.

Various Artists - MusiCares Tribute to Brian Wilson, Hollywood Palladium, Hollywood, CA, 2-11-2005

As I mentioned in my last post, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys died a few days ago as I write this, on June 11, 2025. He's such an important musical figure that I considered it a must to post something in his memory. I did a little Internet browsing, and came across mentions of this tribute concert. However, I could only find a few songs from it, far from the whole thing. But luckily I've recently been getting some assistance from Fabio from Rio, who is a big Brian Wilson / Beach Boys fan. It turned out he had the DVD of this. He then figured out how to convert it to audio format, and sent it to me. So here you are. Earlier today, I posted an album that pays tribute to Brian Wilson created by Fabio, but two tribute albums is better than one.

MusiCares is a non-profit charity that is connected to the organization that runs the yearly Grammy music awards. Since 1991, they've been giving out a yearly award, MusiCares Person of the Year. They have a benefit concert celebrate the music of that person. It takes place in the same town and week as the Grammy awards, so lots of music stars are there to perform on stage or at least attend. The money raised from the benefit concert (and other activities) goes to an organization that helps struggling musicians, for instance those who are having medical trouble or drug addiction and can't afford treatment.

It seems that bootlegs of these yearly MusiCares concerts are basically non-existent. The audiences are relatively small and are mostly made up of music industry insiders who aren't likely to secretly tape record the show and then share that with the public. However, a handful of the concerts have been officially released on DVD. These are generally rare and already out of print. But I've managed to find most of them, concerts for: Paul Simon, James Taylor, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, and Bruce Springsteen (plus this one). I plan on posting all of those here eventually. I know of two more that exist: Barbra Streisand and Carole King. I'm not that interested in the Streisand one, but I'd be very interested in the King one, if anyone has that. (Or, heck, if anyone has any of the other concerts not on DVD!)

For this album, I don't feel I need to explain what happened in the concert, because I found not one, but two, articles that give good summaries. Here they are (with the second one from Rolling Stone):

MusiCares Celebrates Brian Wilson As Person Of The Year | RECORDINGACADEMY.com

Musicians Serenade Brian Wilson at MusiCares Gala

I do want to mention though that I'm very disappointed this isn't the complete concert. Almost complete, but a couple of songs are missing, at least. One song that got left off the DVD, and thus left off this album, is a performance by Neil Young of the Beach Boys classic "In My Room." It seems to be the one and only time Young ever publicly performed this song, so it's a real loss. Another one that wasn't included is a duet between India.Arie and Brian Wilson on the even greater classic "God Only Knows." If anyone has either or both of those, please let me know so I can add them in.

Thanks again to Fabio from Rio. I looked everywhere and couldn't find this, so I was very pleasantly surprised to find he had it. After he sent it to me, I broke the audio into mp3s. So I think it's a safe bet that this is the first time this full concert is being shared in an audio format.

This album is an hour and nine minutes long.

03 talk (Richie Sambora)

Kenny Loggins & Friends - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 2-2-2017

Here's an extra big "PBS Soundstage" episodes, by Kenny Loggins, from 2017. The vast majority of the show episodes are a little less than an hour long. But this one is over two hours long!

This concert is sort of the ultimate Kenny Loggins concert encapsulating his entire career, because he brought in many key guests. The most important guest was Jim Messina, his partner in the successful Loggins and Messina duo in the 1970s. They performed eight Loggins and Messina songs in the middle of the concert, resulting in sort of a mini-concert inside the bigger concert that lasted almost 40 minutes. Another key guest is Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers. Loggins and McDonald wrote some big hits together, including the Number One "What a Fool Believes."

But there are many more guests. For instance, David Foster, a producer who also has been a very successful songwriter. Another is Thundercat, a bassist who plays all sorts of music from funk to jazz, but has a soft spot for "yacht rock," and wrote a song with Loggins and McDonald. In 2013 and 2015, Loggins released albums by a new country band he was a part of, called the Blue Sky Riders. He played two songs here with them. And one member of that band, Georgia Middleman, also sang a duet with him, "Whenever I Call You 'Friend.'" Finally, Loggins sang another song with his daughter, Hana Aluna Loggins. He also was backed by the vocal group Six Appeal on another song. So the concert is chock-a-block with guests, yet it's so long that he did a bunch of songs without guests as well.

The reason this is so long is that a version of it was released on both CD and DVD, so that wasn't limited by the one-hour-long limit of the TV show. But it turns out there were a lot of differences between the CD and DVD. There were some song differences, different song order, and sometime banter included between songs and sometimes not. So I went through both versions, included everything, and put the songs in the correct order. In my opinion, this is the "ultimate" version, better than either the CD or DVD versions.

This album is two hours and 14 minutes long.

Michael McDonald with Ashford & Simpson & the Doobie Brothers - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 7-1-2003

Here's a PBS Soundstage concert starring Michael McDonald from 2003.

But it has some significant guest stars too. First off, the soul duo Ashford and Simpson take the lead on two classic songs they wrote for the Motown record label back in the 1960s, and then return to sing backing vocals on a couple more songs later in the show.

But more significantly, McDonald was joined on stage for the entire second half of the concert by Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston of the Doobie Brothers. Simmons and Johnston were the main creative forces in the Doobie Brothers before McDonald joined the band in 1975 and basically became the main guy in the late 1970s. Johnston only overlapped with McDonald for one album in 1976 before leaving in 1977, but Patrick Simmons never left the band. The two of them were billed at the show as "the Doobie Brothers." Even though the two of them arguably don't make up the Doobie Brothers by themselves, I'm using that in the song titles and album title because when I tried using "Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston" instead, some of the song titles got too long, causing some problems (like not being able to put them in zip files).

Generally, the songs here focus more on hits with the Doobie Brothers than McDonald's solo material. However, there's also a Motown focus, with two more Motown covers as the last two songs. That makes sense because in June 2003, right before this concert took place, McDonald released a solo album titled "Motown," consisting entirely of covers of famous Motown songs. In 2005, he did another Soundstage episode entirely consisting of Motown covers, with more guest stars. I plan on posting that one as well.

This album is an hour and 22 minutes long.

01 It Keeps You Runnin' (Michael McDonald)
02 Sweet Freedom (Michael McDonald)
03 I Keep Forgettin' (Michael McDonald)
04 Find It in Your Heart (Michael McDonald)
05 If You Wanted to Hurt Me (Michael McDonald)
06 talk (Michael McDonald & Ashford & Simpson)
07 Ain't No Mountain High Enough (Michael McDonald & Ashford & Simpson)
08 Ain't Nothing like the Real Thing (Michael McDonald & Ashford & Simpson)
09 talk (Michael McDonald & the Doobie Brothers)
10 Black Water (Michael McDonald & the Doobie Brothers)
11 talk (Michael McDonald & the Doobie Brothers)
12 Take Me in Your Arms [Rock Me a Little While] (Michael McDonald & the Doobie Brothers)
13 Minute by Minute (Michael McDonald & the Doobie Brothers)
14 I Can't Let Go (Michael McDonald & the Doobie Brothers)

The Doobie Brothers - PBS Soundstage, Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, WI, 7-21-1979

Here is an episode of the Doobie Brothers performing for the TV show "PBS Soundstage," from 1979. They also did an episode in 1977. I've found about 70 episodes of this show so far, and I believe this is one of only two times a musical act had two episodes so close in time. It was very rare for the same act to get two episodes at all.

Soundstage ran from 1974 to 2018, with some significant gaps in there. Sometimes, during that long run, the concerts would be edited horribly to fit the hour long time slot. Plus, some producers got cute and liked to jazz things up by cutting in interviews and other scenes not from the concerts. Unfortunately, both Doobie Brothers episodes were butchered pretty badly. I'm posting the 1979 show first because I still have to figure out how to fix some of the problems in the 1977 show.

For this show, I found three different versions, all with slightly different song lists and different edits. This was a lucky thing, though also a pain in the butt, because I was able to combine them to make the longest version, while avoiding some of the problems that were present in only some of the versions. For instance, the songs "Sweet Maxine - It Keeps You Runnin'" and "Minute by Minute" are not found in the most commonly traded versions of this bootleg.

Unfortunately though, some stupid edits were present in all versions. For instance, right in this middle of the song "Don't Stop to Watch the Wheels," a song about motorcycles, an interview with a band member about his love of motorcycles was overdubbed over the music. Ugh! It was the same deal with a couple of other songs, with interview segments right in the middle of them, during instrumental solos. In other cases, songs were faded in or out early. Luckily, I was able to use parts of different versions to fix those. For instance, one version of "Listen to the Music" was cut short, and another version had one of those damn annoying interview sections over the soloing. By combining the two, I was able to get the full version without the overdubbed interview.

However, note there are a couple of places where the sound quality gets a bit rough. I used the UVR5 audio editing program to separate out the talking of the interview from the music, but sometimes there was some damage to the music. Luckily, those damaged parts that remain are petty short, half a minute or so.

Another problem is it turns out the song order in the video was all jumbled up. For instance, "What a Fool Believes" was the third song, which didn't make sense since it was their huge Number One single at the time. I found the correct song list and reordered it to match. (There are a bunch of missing songs, unfortunately.) That meant some of the song transitions didn't sound good. So I fixed those up by adding in more applause.

Also by the way, many versions of this bootleg state the date was July 20, 1979. But during the banter between songs, a band member clearly stated this was the second night of a two night stand at the venue, which makes it July 21st instead, since they played this venue two nights in a row.

This album is an hour and ten minutes long.

01 Take Me in Your Arms (Doobie Brothers)
02 talk (Doobie Brothers)
03 Clear as the Driven Snow (Doobie Brothers)

The cover shows lead vocalist Michael McDonald. I took a screenshot from a video of this exact concert. I used the Krea AI program to improve the image quality.

The writing on his T-shirt intrigued me. I looked at the video to read the whole thing, and found out it was what I'd thought from taking this screenshot: it reads "Bruce Hornsby Band." The odd thing about that is that Hornsby didn't get famous until his first hit single in 1986. I looked it up at his Wikipedia page, and in 1979 his musical career was just getting started. He was only playing small clubs in his hometown of Williamsburg, Virginia. So why the heck was McDonald wearing a shirt with his name on it?!

I did a little more digging and found out there was an interesting story there. It turns out that in 1979, Hornsby boldly went in search of the Doobie Brothers when they were playing a concert near Williamsburg. He found McDonald in the lobby of a hotel, and invited him to see them perform in a small club that night. Remarkably, McDonald went to the club later that night, despite the band being so unknown that only about 15 people were there. McDonald liked the band so much that he invited the entire Doobie Brothers band to see Hornsby's band the next night, which they did. This then led Hornsby to Los Angeles, where he stayed in McDonald's house for about ten days while they did some recording and tried to get a record company. Ultimately, that didn't work out and it would take many more years for Hornsby to even get a record contract.

You can read the whole interesting story here:

Don't Call It A Comeback - Style Weekly

That story certainly explains the unusual T-shirt. Kudos to McDonald for recognizing Hornsby's talent so early.

The Dukes of September (Donald Fagen, Michael McDonald & Boz Scaggs) - The Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, CA, 9-29-2010

A few days ago, I didn't even know this group existed. I randomly stumbled on this recording while searching for something else. I was so impressed by the sound quality of this bootleg recording, as well as the performance, that I'm sharing it straight away.

The Dukes of September are mainly made up of Donald Fagen of Steely Dan, Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers, and Boz Scaggs from his long solo career. From time to time, some artists who were big in earlier decades have teamed up with others so they can still play larger concert venues. For instance, Bob Dylan shared a billing with Paul Simon for a tour so they could fill the largest stadiums. But this is different. This isn't just a case of one person doing a set of their hits, followed by someone else doing their hits, etc... Instead, all three stars stayed on stage the whole concert and played and/or sang on all the songs. For another, while they did do some of their best known hits, about half of the songs are covers that none of them had previously done on record.

You can read more about the Dukes of September at the Wikipedia entry here:

The Dukes of September - Wikipedia

My short summary is that these three stars went on tour together from 1989 to 1992, along with some other less famous stars, such as Phoebe Snow, Eddie Brigati of the Rascals, and blues legend Charles Brown, under the name The New York Rock and Soul Revue. They released a live album in 1991 entitled "Live at the Beacon." They revived their partnership with a new name and more concert tours from 2010 to 2012, though this time without the other stars. However, two female vocalists were included, Carolyn Escoffery and Catherine Russell, and they sing lead vocals on a few of the songs here.

Personally, based on this recording, I prefer the Dukes of September over the New York Rock and Soul Revue, and I much prefer this concert bootleg over that other band's live album. It helps that this one is a lot longer, at two hours and eight minutes compared to an hour and six minutes. But also, I think it works better with more of a focus on the three major stars instead of including a bunch of lesser stars. For instance, on "Live at the Beacon," Boz Scaggs only sang lead on one song, whereas here he sang a bunch.

Strangely, the Dukes of September never released any official album, live or studio. They closest they came is a performance recorded in New York City and played as part of "Great Performances" on PBS. It was later released as a DVD, but not in any audio format. About half of the songs on that are different than the ones here, so maybe I'll find enough material to post a different concert from this bunch someday.

It seems Donald Fagen of Steely Dan was the main impetus for this group. His wife was the producer for their tours and those of their earlier incarnation, and Fagen acted as an MC of sorts, doing most of the talking between songs.

As I mentioned above, the sound quality of this is absolutely fantastic. It's hard to believe it's only a bootleg, because it's recorded and mixed so well that it sounds better than many official live albums. I can only guess that this was professionally done with plans for a possible official album that never came to fruition.

There's only one snag, and it's a rather big one, in my opinion: the soundboard recording was so very good that not much of the audience could be heard after each song. But there was enough there so that I was able to boost the volume until it more or less sounded like a typical cheering crowd.

If you're a fan of Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, and/or Boz Scaggs, you should check it out. As nice as their versions of their own songs are, I think it's even more interesting hearing this bunch do lots of unexpected cover songs. They played songs by Don Covay, the Grateful Dead, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Aretha Franklin, the Band, Mink DeVille, the O'Jays, the Beach Boys, Thunderclap Newman, and more. I think it's pretty clear they were having an especially good time playing songs other than their same old hits that probably bored them by this point in their careers.
