The New York Dolls - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 8-16-2006

Here is another album from the "PBS Soundstage" T.V. show. This one stars the New York Dolls.

The New York Dolls are most famous for the music they did in the early 1970s. They only released two albums in that time period, “New York Dolls” in 1973 and “Too Much Too Soon” in 1974, and neither album sold that well. But they were extremely influential on punk rock, heavy metal, hard rock, glam rock, glam, metal, and other musical genres.

They broke up in 1976. Lead singer David Johansen had a successful second career with the persona "Buster Poindexter," playing a very different style of music. The band had a surprise reunion in 2004, however, although by that time only three of the five original band members were alive and participating in the reunion. One would have thought that they were long past their prime by that point. But they surprised with a very well receive album in 2006, "One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This." Many critics put it on their best albums of the year list. This concert is a mix of songs from the new album and older classics.

The band would break up again in 2011. Since then, all of the bands original members have died.

Here's the band's Wikipedia page for more information:

The music is unreleased, and the sound quality is excellent.

This album is 53 minutes long.

Michael McDonald & Friends - A Tribute to Motown, PBS Soundstage, Nashville, TN, 6-2005

Here is another episode of the great "PBS Soundstage" T.V. show. This one stars, Michael McDonald, but it has a bunch of special guests as well: Billy Preston, Toni Braxton, Take 6, and Indie.Arie. All the songs they performed are covers of Motown classics from the 1960s and 70s.

McDonald has been on the Soundstage show quite a lot. He was a key member of the Doobie Brothers when they hosted the show in 1979. He also hosted it in 2003 with some other guests. And he was a guest on an episode hosted by Kenny Loggins. And I believe he will be on at least one more episode that I have yet to post.

In this case, I would bet the show had him back because of the Motown theme to the episode, meaning that the songs were different from the ones he played on other episodes. At the time he was going through quite a Motown phase. In 2003, he released an all covers album just called "Motown," And in 2004, he released a sequel called "Motown 2." The special guests were not on those albums, with the exception of Toni Braxton. The duet she sang here with McDonald, "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)," also appeared as a duet on his "Motown 2" album.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

An hour and six minutes long.

Chris Isaak - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 9-2005

Here is another album of an episode of the "PBS Soundstage" T.V. show. This one stars Chris Isaak. It seems the makers of the show really liked Isaak, because this was one of three episodes starring him. I can’t remember offhand anybody else who starred in three episodes of the show. All of them were in the early 2000s. To Isaak’s credit, he mostly played different songs in each episode, helped by the fact that one of them was a Christmas episode.

The music here is unreleased, and the sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and five minutes long.

Billy Idol - PBS Soundstage, Congress Theater, Chicago, IL, 7-1-2009

Despite the fact that I just got back from Peru last week, I am on the move again. A family thing has me in Seattle Washington for six days. I just arrived. But like my trip to Peru, I have some albums, ready to go, so I should be able to keep posting during this trip. They mostly consist of episodes of the "PBS Soundstage" TV show.

Here is one from 2009 featuring Billy Idol. Since I am traveling, I’ll keep my comments short.

The music here is unreleased, and the sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and eight minutes long.

Stevie Nicks with Vanessa Carlton - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 10-2007

Im posting Neil Young and Dionne Warwick albums almost exclusively while I’m on vacation, but here’s an exception. I happen to have this episode of the “PBS Soundstage” episode ready to go. It stars Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac, with Vanessa Carlton as a special guest for a couple of songs.

Here's part of the intro to the Wikipedia entry for guest star Vanessa Carlton:

Vanessa Lee Carlton (born August 16, 1980) is an American singer-songwriter, pianist, and actress. Her 2002 debut single "A Thousand Miles" spent 41 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned three Grammy nominations, becoming her signature song. It preceded her debut album, Be Not Nobody, released by A&M Records that same year and reaching number five on the Billboard 200. It further produced the singles "Ordinary Day" and "Pretty Baby". ... In 2025, Billboard ranked Carlton among the best female artists of the 21st century.

Here's the link to the Wikipedia entry for Carlton:

Vanessa Carlton - Wikipedia

The music here is unreleased in audio format. The sound quality is excellent. I believe it comes from a DVD. That’s why it’s a full concert length instead of being edited down to about an hour.

This album is an hour and 45 minutes long.

Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes with Junior Wells - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 10-12-1979

Here's another album from the "PBS Soundstage" TV show. This one stars Southside Johnny and the Ashbury Jukes. It also features blues great Junior Wells as a guest star. Wells sang and played his harmonica on two songs in the middle of the show, plus another one near the end.

I wanted to use the intro to the band's Wikipedia entry, but it's very badly written. It defines the band almost entirely in terms of their connections to Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. And while it's true they had a lot of links to that band, they have been a fine band in their own right as well.

Here's the Wikipedia entry anyway:

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes - Wikipedia

The popularity of the band peaked in the late 1970s, in my opinion. So this is a good time for this concert. At the time, I believe Little Steven Van Zandt was still one of the band's two main leaders and songwriters, along with Southside Johnny. Van Zandt left the band in 1980, probably due to his commitments to being a member of the E Street Band.

Junior Wells is very famous in the blues world. He's especially known for his collaboration with Buddy Guy over several decades, with Wells playing harmonica and Guy playing lead guitar.

Here's his Wikipedia entry:

This album is 59 minutes long.

01 All I Want Is Everything [Edit] (Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes)
02 Your Reply (Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes)

Marshall Crenshaw - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 5-2-1983

Here's another episode of the "PBS Soundstage" TV show. This time, it stars Marshall Crenshaw.

Crenshaw was really hot stuff in the music business for about two years, 1982 and 1983. That's when he released his first two albums, "Marshall Crenshaw" and "Field Day." Both of them got a lot of critical acclaim, and contained hit songs. Unfortunately, he couldn't maintain that level of success after that. But, given that history, it's not surprising that his Soundstage episode came in 1983, probably the peak of his popularity.

I've already posted two BBC concerts Crenshaw did, in 1982 and 1983. The 1983 one took place less than two months after this one, so it's not surprising the set lists are pretty similar. However, I do want to post all the worthy Soundstage episodes I can find, so I'm posting this despite the similarity to the other 1983 concert I've posted from him.

While there are similarities, there also are differences. Most notably, Crenshaw performed some cover versions in this concert he didn't perform in the 1983 BBC concert: "Soldier of Love (Lay Down Your Arms)," "Got a Lot o' Livin' to Do," "Stop Her on Sight (S.O.S.)," "Brown Eyed Handsome Man," and "White Lightning."

This album is 56 minutes long.

01 Mary Anne (Marshall Crenshaw)
02 Rockin' Around in N.Y.C. (Marshall Crenshaw)
03 Girls (Marshall Crenshaw)
04 Soldier of Love [Lay Down Your Arms] (Marshall Crenshaw)

06 She Can't Dance (Marshall Crenshaw)
07 Move It (Marshall Crenshaw)
08 talk (Marshall Crenshaw)
09 Something's Gonna Happen (Marshall Crenshaw)
10 Someday, Someway (Marshall Crenshaw)
11 There She Goes Again (Marshall Crenshaw)
12 Brand New Lover (Marshall Crenshaw)

The Counting Crows - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 11-13-2003

Here's another episode of the "PBS Soundstage" TV show. It features the band the Counting Crows, from 2003.

The Counting Crows (technically, just "Counting Crows") burst onto the music scene with their 1993 debut album "August and Everything After." It sold ten million copies worldwide, including seven million in the U.S. Their next album was also very successful. But each succeeding album has lower sales. Their most recent album at the time of this concert, "Hard Candy" in 2002, only went Gold (meaning U.S. sales of half a million). After that album, the band would take a recording break, not releasing another studio album until 2008.

Here's their Wikipedia link, if you want to know more:

Counting Crows - Wikipedia

I'm not much of a fan of this band. For some reason, I've never enjoyed the vocals of lead singer Adam Duritz. But they certainly are talented and have many good songs. If only I could handle that voice.

In addition to their own songs, this concert includes a cover of the Grateful Dead song "Friend of the Devil." They didn't put that on any of their studio albums, but they did put it on a "best of" album released in 2003.

The music is unreleased, and the sound quality is excellent.

This album is 53 minutes long.

01 Mrs. Potter's Lullaby (Counting Crows)
02 Mr. Jones (Counting Crows)
03 talk (Counting Crows)
04 Recovering the Satellites (Counting Crows)

Chris Isaak with Stevie Nicks, Michael Buble & Brian McKnight - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 9-21-2004

Here's a little Christmas gift - some Christmassy music. This is another episode of the excellent "PBS Soundstage" TV show. Chris Isaak was the host, but he also had three guest stars: Stevie Nicks, Michael Buble, and Brian McKnight.

I actually posted a Soundstage episode starring Chris Isaak already, from 2003. But he came back only a year later probably because of the Christmas theme, so all the music was different. He actually would go on to host the show yet again in 2005. I'll post that one eventually as well.

Isaak generally sang most of the songs, and then sang duets with the guests. Then everyone came back to take part in the final song.

I should have posted this earlier in the winter holiday season, but at least I posted it a few days before Christmas. Happy holidays!

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 57 minutes long.

Death Cab for Cutie - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 7-9-2009

Here's another episode of the "PBS Soundstage" TV show. It stars American indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie.

I gave this a listen, and it didn't do much for me. But I'm trying to post all the "Soundstage" episodes that are at least decent, and this certainly gets over that bar. In order to be the subject of one of these episodes, I've noticed the musical act needs to be pretty commercially successful. At the time of this concert, the band's previous album had gone Gold (sales of over 500,000) in the U.S., and their two prior albums had gone Platinum (sales of over a million), so one can see how they qualified. Their biggest hit was "I Will Follow You into the Dark," which went double Platinum as a single, but curiously, the band didn't perform that song in this concert. (Or at least it didn't make the final cut in the editing room.)

If you want to know more about this act, here's their Wikipedia page:

John Mayer with Buddy Guy - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 6-29-2004

Here's yet another episode of the great "PBS Soundstage" TV show. This one stars singer-songwriter John Mayer. But it also includes blues legend Buddy Guy as a guest star.

I'm not a huge John Mayer fan, but his music is certainly good enough to be worthy of a Soundstage episode. And while that show encourages the inclusion of guest stars, I was impressed that Mayer chose Buddy Guy, out of all people. Like Guy, Mayer is a talented lead guitarist, and the two of them jammed well together near the end of the concert. Guy also got to sing one of his songs at the end.

At the time of this concert, Mayer had released two albums. Both of them sold at least three million copies. So he was at or near the peak of his popularity, though he continued to sell at that level through the rest of the decade.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 57 minutes long.

KT Tunstall - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 5-6-2006

Here's another episode of the excellent "PBS Soundstage" TV show. This one stars singer-songwriter KT Tunstall.

Tunstall had a massive debut album in 2004. "Eye to the Telescope" sold nearly five million copies worldwide. So her popularity was still soaring at the time of this concert in 2006. Her next album wouldn't be released until 2007, so this mostly consists of songs from that debut album.

Unfortunately, the popularity of her debut wasn't sustained. But I think she's put out quality music all along.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 54 minutes long.

Chicago - PBS Soundstage, Park West, Chicago, IL, 6-2003

Here's another episode of the excellent "PBS Soundstage" TV show. This one stars the band Chicago.

By 2003, the band was long past their 1970s heyday, and they'd lost some key members. It's too bad the show couldn't have had them on during that decade. But still, it's a solid bunch of classic songs. And I'm posting pretty much all the Soundstage episodes I can find, so I'm posting this one too.

If I recall, this is from a DVD, so it's longer than the usual episodes for this show. And that also means the sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and 22 minutes long.

Here's an episode of the great "PBS Soundstage" TV show, starring Tori Amos.

Amos had most of her commercial success in the 1990s and early 2000s. All five of her 1990s albums reached Platinum status (sales of a million or more) is the U.S. Her last Gold status album (sales of half a million or more) was in 2002, with "Scarlet's Walk," the album she was touring to support at the time of this concert. Also, if you look at the crowd-sourced ratings of her albums at rateyourmusic.com, her albums through "Scarlet's Walk" are her most highly rated ones. So this was a good time for a Soundstage episode from her.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 59 minutes long.

01 A Sorta Fairytale (Tori Amos)
02 Bliss (Tori Amos)
03 Horses (Tori Amos)

Katharine McPhee with Eric Benet - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 10-10-2017

Here's another episode of the "PBS Soundstage" TV show, from 2017. This one stars Katharine McPhee with Eric Benet as a guest star.

I have to admit that I'd never heard of McPhee before putting this album together. She rose to fame by making it to the final round in the "American Idol" TV show in 2005. That led to a record contract. That didn't lead to a huge music career, but she did have some success. In particular, her self-titled debut album did pretty well, reaching Number Two on the U.S. album chart in 2007. And she had two Top Forty singles around that time, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Over It."

She's also had success as an actress and a model. Here's here Wikipedia entry if you want to know more about her:

Katharine McPhee - Wikipedia

What I like about this album, and the reason I'm posting it here, is because it consists entirely of covers, usually of classics from the "Great American Songbook." In November 2017, one month after this concert, she released the album "I Fall in Love Too Easily," consisting entirely of covers of these types of songs. So she stuck to that style, not even performing her 2007 hit "Over It." She has a nice voice, and it's hard to go wrong with these kinds of songs.

I similarly knew nothing about Eric Benet before posting this album. His role is pretty minor here, singing duets with McPhee on two songs. He put out a couple of albums in the late 1990s that did well, but his sales declined after that. Here's the Wikipedia entry about him:

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 56 minutes long.

02 I'll Be Seeing You - Some Other Time (Katharine McPhee)
03 Night and Day (Katharine McPhee)

Wilco - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 5-7-2003

Here's another episode of the great "PBS Soundstage" TV show. This one features the band Wilco in 2003.

Wilco has been a very critically acclaimed band. They've been led by Jeff Tweedy, who has also done a lot as a solo artist. Their 2001 album "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" is their most acclaimed, for instance making Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the top 500 albums of all time. It also was their best selling, selling over half a million copies in the U.S. and almost making it to the Top Ten in the U.S. album charts. This concert took place when they were still promoting that album, since they wouldn't release their next album until 2004.

There's a long and interesting story about how their record company refused to release that album and then cancelled their record contract. In fact, an  documentary has been made about it. If you want to know more about that, and the band in general, here's their Wikipedia link:

Wilco - Wikipedia

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 43 minutes long. Note that this is suspiciously short, since the show was an hour long without commercials, and most other episodes are about 58 minutes long. I don't know if there are some missing Wilco songs, or if the band shared the show with another musical act that didn't make it to the video I found, or if there's some other reason for this length. According to the setlist.fm set list, the band did perform a few more songs, but I don't know if those were televised or not.

01 Handshake Drugs (Wilco)
02 Sunken Treasure (Wilco)
03 I Am Trying to Break Your Heart (Wilco)
04 War on War (Wilco)
05 talk (Wilco)
06 When the Roses Bloom Again (Wilco)
07 Poor Places (Wilco)
08 Red-Eyed and Blue (Wilco)
09 I Got You [At the End of the Century] (Wilco)
10 talk (Wilco)
11 Kicking Television (Wilco)

Fleetwood Mac - PBS Soundstage, FleetCenter, Boston, MA, 9-24-2003

Here's a Fleetwood Mac concert from the great "PBS Soundstage" TV show. This concert was split between two episodes, making for an extra long concert compared to most episodes.

This concert took place in 2003, shortly after the release of the band's album "Say You Will." This was a time when the band was led by two singer-songwriters, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, while their their singer-songwriter, Christine McVie, was pursuing a solo career. Six songs were played from their new album: "Peacekeeper," "Say You Will," "Goodbye Baby," "What's the World Coming To," and "Say Goodbye." The rest was filled with greatest hits, minus some written by McVie.

This full concert was later released on DVD. There was an audio album released as well, but it only contains ten songs out of 24, so it's very incomplete.

This album is two hours and 24 minutes long.

01 The Chain (Fleetwood Mac)
02 Dreams (Fleetwood Mac)
03 Eyes of the World (Fleetwood Mac)
04 talk (Fleetwood Mac)

Blood, Sweat and Tears with Janis Ian - PBS Soundstage, Park West, Chicago, IL, 8-12-1975

Here's another episode of the "PBS Soundstage" TV show. This one is headlined by the band Blood, Sweat and Tears. But they also performed some songs with singer-songwriter Janis Ian on lead vocals.

As I've said before, one of the things I like most about this TV show is how it often encouraged collaborations by having the main musical act supplemented by a guest act. Let me explain why I think Ian was chosen.

Blood, Sweat and Tears was extremely popular around 1970. But their popularity soon declined. One problem was the lead singer with a distinctive voice, David Clayton-Thomas, left the band for a solo career in 1972. But his solo career didn't have much success, and the band's popularity went further down without him. So, in 1975, he rejoined the band. The first album with him back in the band was called "New City," released in April 1975. One of the songs on that was "Applause," written by Ian. So I think that's why Ian was chosen.

Meanwhile, Ian had a big hit in 1966 with "Society's Child," when she was still a teenager. But she didn't have much success for quite a few years after that. But that changed in July 1975, when she released "At Seventeen" as a single. It caught fire, and made it all the way to Number Three in the U.S. charts.

I don't know the exact timing of this concert. It's possible the August 1975 date in the title is the broadcast date, not the date the concert was recorded. It would be interesting to find out, due to Ian's popularity surging in the middle of 1975. It would also be interesting if Blood, Sweat and Tears helped her with the guest spot before her resurgence began.

This concert began with several songs just performed by Blood, Sweat and Tears. The heavily relied on songs from their new album at the time, "New City." Tracks 1, 4, 5, and 7 are from that album. But for tracks 5, 6, 7, and 8, they were joined by Ian on vocals.

The last song, "At Seventeen," isn't from this concert. Or at least this version isn't. I strongly suspect there are a couple more songs from this concert that I don't have, because these episodes were an hour long (without commercial breaks), and this one is more than ten minutes short of that. If anyone has more of this concert, or at least just knows the songs played, please let me know. But I thought it was kind of weird to have Ian in concert in 1975 and not include her big hit from that year. So I added in an unreleased performance of "At Seventeen" done on the "Saturday Night Live" TV show in September of that year.

This album is 48 minutes long.

01 Got to Get You into My Life (Blood, Sweat & Tears)
02 Yesterday's Music (Blood, Sweat & Tears)
03 And When I Die (Blood, Sweat & Tears)
04 Ride Captain Ride (Blood, Sweat & Tears)
05 Applause (Blood, Sweat & Tears & Janis Ian)
06 In the Winter (Blood, Sweat & Tears & Janis Ian)
07 I Was a Witness to a War (Blood, Sweat & Tears & Janis Ian)
08 Hallelujah (Blood, Sweat & Tears & Janis Ian)
09 At Seventeen (Janis Ian)

Gloria Estefan - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 8-16-1993

Here's an episode of Gloria Estefan performing for the great "PBS Soundstage" TV show.

Gloria Estefan's music isn't my cup of tea. But her record sales exceed over 100 million, making her one of the best selling musical acts of all time. And she's even won a Gershwin Prize. So I figure I should post her episode for the people who want it.

(By the way, note that this episode took place in the one year the show was called "Center Stage." But I'm just calling it "Soundstage" for consistency with all the other episodes I'm posting.)

This was one of those episodes where, unfortunately, the producers tried to spice things up with more than just music from the concert, for instance interviews. I cut that extra stuff one. In a few cases, there was some overdubbed talking related to that extra stuff that went over the actual music. So I used the UVR5 audio editing program to get rid of the talking. That's why three songs have "[Edit]" in their titles.

This concert took place a couple of months after the release of her studio album "Mi Tierra," which was one of her best selling albums. It also was her first all-Spanish-language album. However, all but a couple of songs here are sung in English.

This unreleased album is 54 minutes long.

01 Rhythm Is Gonna Get You (Gloria Estefan)
02 talk (Gloria Estefan)
03 Words Get in the Way (Gloria Estefan)
04 talk (Gloria Estefan)
05 Here We Are [Toda Pra Voce] [Edit] (Gloria Estefan)
06 Live for Loving You (Gloria Estefan)
07 Can't Stay Away from You (Gloria Estefan)
08 Don't Wanna Lose You (Gloria Estefan)
09 talk (Gloria Estefan)
10 Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me (Gloria Estefan)
11 Oye Mi Canto (Gloria Estefan)
12 talk (Gloria Estefan)
13 Anything for You [Edit] (Gloria Estefan)
14 Coming Out of the Dark [Edit] (Gloria Estefan)
15 Conga (Gloria Estefan)
16 talk (Gloria Estefan)
17 Always Tomorrow (Gloria Estefan)

Gordon Lightfoot - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 9-8-1979

Here's another episode of the excellent "PBS Soundstage" TV show. This is another episode starring Gordon Lightfoot. I say "another" because he also performed for the show in 1973. I've posted that album here already.

This album caught Lightfoot halfway between the release on his "Endless Wire" album in early 1978 and "Dream Street Rose," which would be released in 1980. He played two songs from each. Otherwise, this mostly consists of his classics from previous albums.

Two of the songs have edits to them. I edited track 12, a talk track, because it contained an interview. I cut that out, since it wasn't part of the concert. But I kept a section between songs there where he introduced the members of his band. The other edited track is the last one, "Canadian Railroad Trilogy." Unfortunately, that's a long song, and the episode ended after only three minutes of it. So I found a different bootleg soundboard version from the time period, and used that to patch in the last four minutes. That's why those two tracks have "[Edit]" in their titles.

This album is 59 minutes long.

01 Cotton Jenny (Gordon Lightfoot)
02 The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (Gordon Lightfoot)
03 Endless Wire (Gordon Lightfoot)
04 Summertime Dream (Gordon Lightfoot)
05 talk (Gordon Lightfoot)
06 Don Quixote (Gordon Lightfoot)
07 If You Could Read My Mind (Gordon Lightfoot)
08 Ghosts of Cape Horn (Gordon Lightfoot)
09 Beautiful (Gordon Lightfoot)
10 Hangdog Hotel Room (Gordon Lightfoot)
11 Sundown (Gordon Lightfoot)
12 talk [Edit] (Gordon Lightfoot)
13 Early Morning Rain (Gordon Lightfoot)
14 Whisper My Name (Gordon Lightfoot)
15 On the TV (Gordon Lightfoot)
16 Old Dan's Records (Gordon Lightfoot)
17 talk (Gordon Lightfoot)
18 Canadian Railroad Trilogy [Edit] (Gordon Lightfoot)
