Aerosmith - BBC Sessions, Volume 3: In Concert, Forest National Theatre, Brussels, Belgium, 10-31-1993

A few days ago (writing this in November 2025), I posted an earlier Aerosmith album. I said I had a "Volume 3" as well, so here it is. This one is extra nice because BBC concerts often are edited down to an hour or less, but this is the full concert, nearly two hours long.

Aerosmith's career got a second wind starting in the late 1980s. That continued in the early 1990s. Their 1993 album, "Get a Grip" sold seven million copies in the U.S. alone. This concert was part of a world tour to support the album. The band leaned heavily on playing songs from that album, as well as their late 1980s ones. So there were relatively few songs from their 1970s albums.

There's a 1994 BBC concert as well (at the Monsters of Rock festival in England), but it isn't that different from this one, so I don't think I'll post that one. So these three volumes in this series are probably all the BBC albums I'll be posting from this band, unless something else pops up.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and 51 minutes long.

Aerosmith - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: In Concert, Hammersmith Odeon, London, Britain, 11-15-1989

Here's an Aerosmith concert broadcast by the BBC, from 1989.

I kind of fell into this album by accident. I previously posted an Aerosmith BBC concert album from 1990. I thought that was the only one they'd done for the BBC. But I recently stumbled across a 1993 one, which I plan on posting soon. That inspired me to dig for more, and I came across this one too.

Note that the one I posted before has been renamed to "Volume 2." If you want the updated version, with changed cover art and mp3 tags, here's the link:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2022/12/aerosmith-with-jimmy-page-bbc-in.html

Aerosmith was very popular in the 1970s. But they had tough times in the early and mid-1980s, with drug use and personal conflict problems. But they got their act together and had some smash albums starting with "Permanent Vacation" in 1987. This was from the tour to support their second comeback album, "Pump," released in 1989, which sold seven million copies in the U.S. alone.

Finding these BBC concerts from the band's second wave of popularity made me wonder if the BBC ever broadcast any concerts from their first wave of popularity in the 1970s. It seems not. I checked the setlist.fm website. According to that (which admittedly in sometimes incomplete), Aerosmith only performed five concerts in Britain in all of the 1970s. It appears they were almost entirely focused on building up a fan base in the U.S. at the time. Sometimes, the BBC bought the rights to broadcast concerts recorded by other radio networks in the U.S. or elsewhere, but I guess they didn't do that with Aerosmith back then.

Anyway, this is a fairly short bootleg concert. No doubt, the BBC edited it down to fit into an hour-long radio show time slot. But the sound quality is excellent.

This album is 56 minutes long.

01 Rats in the Cellar (Aerosmith)
02 Same Old Song and Dance (Aerosmith)

Concert for Walden Woods, Foxboro Stadium, Foxborough, MA, 9-6-1993, Part 4: Aerosmith

Here's the fourth part of the 1993 Concert for Walden Woods. This time around, it's the band Aerosmith. For more about the concert and the cause it was for, check out my Part 1 write-up.

At first glance, it seems unexpected that Aerosmith would perform for free for a charity to preserve the nature around a pond made famous by the 1800s author Henry David Thoreau. They're not known for their activism, like other acts in this concert, such as Sting and Don Henley. But it makes more sense who you consider that Aerosmith is very much a Boston band, and the Walden Woods (and pond) are located on the outskirts of Boston.

Anyway, this is a rather short set, considering that Aerosmith was hugely popular at the time. This was the shortest set of the concert (although I don't have the recording of the full Sting set). But a short set is better than no set at all, and all of the songs they played were hits and/or classics.

This album is 34 minutes long.

01 Toys in the Attic (Aerosmith)
02 Sweet Emotion (Aerosmith)
03 talk (Aerosmith)
04 Cryin' (Aerosmith)

Aerosmith - Schaeffer Music Festival, Central Park, New York City, 8-29-1975

It dawned on me the other day that I haven't posted much music by Aerosmith, and nothing from their 1970s years. This is probably one of their best concert recordings, even though it's a bootleg.

Considering Aerosmith's reputation as a kick-ass live band, they have released surprisingly few official live albums, at least from their best years, which I consider the 1970s, plus their late 1980s to early 1990s revival. The only live album from the 1970s is "Live! Bootleg." But that has a couple of problems, in my opinion. One is that the band wanted to imitate the look and sound of a bootleg, to the point that some of the songs were degraded to sound like they were recorded by a cassette tape player. The other is that it's a selection of songs from many concerts. There's a place for that, but I generally prefer a single, complete concert, which this is.

That album mostly consists of performances from 1978. By contrast, this show took place in 1975. As the 1970s went on, the band's performances grew more hit and miss, depending on their (usually considerable) drug intake at the time. But they were still firing on all cylinders here.

The sound quality of this concert is excellent. I suspect that's because it was professionally recorded, to be broadcast on the radio.

This album is an hour and four minutes long.

01 talk (Aerosmith)
02 Walkin' the Dog (Aerosmith)
03 S.O.S. [Too Bad] - Somebody (Aerosmith)

Aerosmith with Jimmy Page - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: In Concert, Monsters of Rock, Donington Park, Castle Donington, Britain, 8-18-1990

This is really the combination of two concerts, though they are closely connected, taking place just two days apart from each other. The first and main part comes from the Castle Donington show mentioned in the title. Led Zeppelin's lead guitarist Jimmy Page guested on two encore songs, "Train Kept A-Rollin'" and "Walk This Way." Then the last six songs are from a concert at the Marquee Club in London two days later, August 20th, 1990. Five of those six songs also have Jimmy Page as the special guest.

The sound quality of both shows is very good. The main show was broadcast on the BBC. For whatever reason though, the sound quality wasn't up to the usual BBC high standards. Perhaps there was some sound loss while recording it off the radio or something like that. But I used the X-Minus audio editing program to boost the lead vocals, and that helped a lot. It appears to be the full show (according to the set list at setlist.fm), even though it's only about an hour long.

The Marque Club songs sound even better. These were the last songs to a longer concert, but apparently the rest of the show is only available as an average sounding audience bootleg, while these songs are from a soundboard source. Clearly, someone was interested in the extensive Jimmy Page guest spot.

Speaking of Page, it's a bit odd that because he makes two appearances, he gets introduced twice. Also, one of the songs, "Train Kept A-Rollin'" appears twice, once from each show's encore. Hopefully you can roll with that. There's one song from the Marquee Club without him, "Milk Cow Blues." It's a song made famous by Elvis Presley that Aerosmith never put on record, so I figured it was worth keeping in, even though that meant the two Jimmy Page appearances couldn't be merged into one.

The songs done with Page are interesting choices. Clearly, Aerosmith listened to Yardbirds records, because they did three Yardbirds covers ("I Ain't Got You," "Think about It," and "Train Kept A-Rollin'") and only one Led Zeppelin cover ("Immigrant Song"). I'll bet Page got a kick out of doing obscurities like "Think about It" for the first time in years. By the way, it's amusing to note how lead singer Steven Tyler totally botched the lyrics to "Immigrant Song." He got maybe a couple of lines correct and the rest he did more based on the sounds of the words.

By the way, there was a problem with "Red House," which is why that song has "[Edit]" in its title. This Jimi Hendrix cover from the Marque Club encore was going along nicely when it seems lead guitarist Joe Perry's amplifier blew out in the middle of his solo. The band came to a halt for a couple of minutes until the problem was fixed. I edited out this interruption almost entirely. You'll only hear the band stop for a couple of seconds in the middle of the song. But if you listen closely right before that, there's a fraction of a minute with no guitar soloing due to the amp problem.

Although it's a bit weird at times, especially with Page getting introduced twice, I think this combination of shows works well. The Castle Donington portion is an hour and five minutes long. The Marquee Club portion is 33 minutes long. So if you add them together, it makes for a concert that's an hour and 38 minutes long, which was probably typical for most Aerosmith concerts at that time.

UPDATE: On November 15, 2025, I updated the mp3 download file. The music is exactly the same. However, I changed the title to "Volume 2" after discovering material for a "Volume 1." That means the cover art and mp3 tags were changed as well.

The cover photo comes from the Marquee Club show featured at the end of this album.  It mainly shows just Joe Perry and Jimmy Page (you can see the drummer Joey Kramer in red between them). But I figured what makes this album stand out is the presence of Page, so it's good to have him on the cover.

Aerosmith - MTV Unplugged, Ed Sullivan Theater, New York City, 8-11-1990

I'm not much of a fan of Aerosmith beyond their hits. But their hits are really good and there are a lot of them. There is one thing from them that I want to share at this blog though, and that is an "acoustic" performance they did for MTV Unplugged in 1990 that never has been officially released. It's really good, and this version I'm sharing is superior to the one that is commonly available as a bootleg.

I put "acoustic" in quotes because they played as a full band, including drums, so it's more like semi-acoustic. But for a hard rocking band like Aerosmith, it was a different sound for them, relatively speaking. I believe it's the only time they ever played in an acoustic format. (Lead singer Steven Tyler has done some acoustic stuff in recent years, but without the rest of the band.) I consider this a "must-have" for any Aerosmith fan.

This show has been frequently bootlegged, and you can find grey market versions on Amazon and other similar places. But that version has a big problem. While it contains all the music in good quality, the recording was butchered between most of the songs, with most of the banter and applause cut off. I found one video clip on YouTube that had much more of the time between songs, but only for a portion of the concert. However, that encouraged me that more of it had to be out there. I looked high and low, and finally managed to find a version that included the full recording. It adds about six minutes to the total length of the concert, so it makes a difference.

The sound quality of this version is excellent. The show was professionally recorded by MTV, so this sounds as good as any live album from the time. It's a mystery to me why this album wasn't officially released, especially since the "Unplugged" trend was big at the time, and bands that did release their "Unplugged" concerts often sold millions of those albums. But at least it's here for you to listen to now.

I've made a few edits to improve things. The version I found with all the time between the songs included sometimes had too much dead air with guitar tuning and the like. So I cut out the boring parts. I also boosted the volume of some of the banter that was a bit quiet. But that was all the tweaking I had to do.

The band played some cover songs that they didn't normally do, for instance "Love Me Two Times" by the Doors, "Smokestack Lightning" by Howlin' Wolf, and "Milk Cow Blues" by Kokomo Arnold (which was done by Elvis Presley and the Kinks as well, by the way). They also did some covers that they put on well-known albums: "Big Ten Inch Record," "Walking the Dog," and "Train Kept A-Rollin'." Add it together, and about half the songs they did were covers.

The main concert is an hour and six minutes long.

On top of that, I've added some quasi-bonus tracks at the end. Basically, I stuck everything else I had from the band that was acoustic or semi-acoustic. It wasn't much. There are two songs the band played acoustically for the Howard Stern radio show in 1997, "Pink" and "Bacon Biscuit Blues." By the way, I believe "Bacon Biscuit Blues" is an original outtake from the "Nine Lives" album that never got officially released because it didn't fit with the other music they were doing at the time. Then this album ends with acoustic versions of songs that were released as B-sides to the hit A-sides of the same songs in 1993 and 1994.

Including all four of the extra songs, the album totals a hour and 24 minutes.

Boy, did I have a hard time finding a good cover image for this album. The video of the band's "Unplugged" performance is available on YouTube and other places, but it's rather low-res and blurry. It's okay for watching a video, but any screenshot of it looks bad. All the photos I found from the concert, such as the ones used for bootleg covers, were taken from the blurry video. But I finally found one good one taken from yet another bootleg cover of the same concert. The only problem is it only depicts lead singer Steven Tyler instead of the entire band. So this is what I'm going with. But if anyone has a better one, please let me know.

The text for the band name and "Unplugged" is exactly as it was from the bootleg cover. The only change I made is the small text under the word "Unplugged."
