The Eagles - The Forum, Inglewood, CA, 3-4-1980

Here's a live concert from 1980 by the Eagles (or, if you want to be technically correct, just Eagles).

The Eagles broke up in 1980, although they would reunite in 1994 and occasionally thereafter. They marked the end of their eight years as a band with a live double album, simply called "Eagles Live." Although decent, in my opinion it has some problems. I generally prefer full concerts. Not only is "Eagles Live" selected from multiple concerts from 1980, five of the songs actually are from 1976! And given the band had so much material to choose from, why reach back to 1976 and pick songs like "Doolin' Dalton (Reprise II)" and "Wasted Time?"

Furthermore, the band was slowing falling apart, and losing enthusiasm as the tour went on. In fact, things got so bad that on the last night of the tour, there was a confrontation between band members Glenn Frey and Don Felder that some say came to blows. It is known that Felder smashed one of his own guitars to express his feelings. Yet there was even music on the live album from that concert. The break-up after that was very bitter.

I have another issue with the official live album. It's well known that the songs were extensively overdubbed later. In fact, Rolling Stone Magazine later said it was "perhaps the most heavily overdubbed [live album] in history." I prefer listening to live performances as they really were, without all that tinkering.

Luckily for us, there is one soundboard bootleg from the band's final tour, this one. However, there is one major problem with it: the recording stopped before the end of the concert. About one minute into an encore of the song "Carol," it seems the tape ran out. This is particularly frustrating because this was a cover of the Chuck Berry song, and the Eagles never put it on their "Eagles Live" album or any other album. Furthermore, Elton John played piano on it, although to be honest it's hard to tell.

I got a minor break in that I found an audience bootleg that had the rest of "Carol," plus all of the next song, "Best of My Love." The song "Carol" has "[Edit]" in the title because I spliced the two versions together. Unfortunately, it seems that the tape on that recording ran out too. According to setlist.fm, two more songs were performed, "Walk Away" and "Tequila Sunrise." But at least we got the vast majority of the concert, even though the sound quality on the last two is a little rough.

Personally, I think this is better than the official album from the tour. The only loss in my opinion is that this doesn't have a version of the song "Seven Bridges Road," which the band released for the first time on "Eagles Live." I checked, and while the band played the song on March 1st and 2nd, it was a changing setlist, and they skipped it on March 3rd and 4th.

This album is an hour and 36 minutes long.

The cover photo doesn't come from this concert, but it's close. It's from a concert at the same venue, but on March 1st, the first of a four concert run. The fancy lettering of the band name at the top is something I found just by Googling images of the band's name.

Don Henley - VH-1 Storytellers, Hollywood Center Studios, Los Angeles, CA, 2-19-2000

The "VH-1 Storytellers" flood is almost at an end, with just one more album after this. This is an episode featuring singer-songwriter Don Henley.

We're lucky that this appears to be another double episode. On YouTube, and with most bootlegs, one can only find the first half of this. Perhaps that was all that was actually aired. But I luckily found more, which sounds like material edited down to a second episode. I believe I even removed one comment Henley made about halfway through that was an intro to the second episode (and didn't make sense when listening to all the music together).

The episode took place three months prior to the release of the studio album "Inside Job." It was Henley's first solo album in eleven years. Despite that long break, it sold over a million copies in the U.S. (He's never been that prolific. It would take him 15 years to release his next studio album.)

Henley performed four songs from his "Inside Job" album: "Taking You Home," "Workin' It," "Everything Is Different Now," and "For My Wedding."

Henley had his greatest success in the 1970s as a member of the Eagles. But it seems that by this point in his music career, he was tired of his Eagles songs. He only performed two of them here, "Life in the Fast Lane" and "Desperado." Even then, "Life in the Fast Lane" was drastically rearranged into more of a rap song. The other songs he played were generally solo hits from the 1980s.

This album is an hour and 19 minutes long.

Concert for Walden Woods, Foxboro Stadium, Foxborough, MA, 9-6-1993, Part 5: Don Henley with Jimmy Buffett

This is the fifth and last part of the 1993 Concert for Walden Woods. Don Henley, the most famous lead singer of the Eagles, founded the charity organization behind the concert, and this has been the charity cause he's most involved with over the years. Plus, he was massively popular at the time. So it made sense that he would be the headline, final act. However, he also got a significant assist from Jimmy Buffett on two songs.

I've explained more about the cause for this concert in my Part 1 write-up. So please refer to that to learn more. Henley also talked about it some in his lengthy banter before the song "Hotel California." But note that I edit the banter in that spot down considerably, probably cutting it in half. That's why it has "[Edit]" in the title. I cut off stuff I wouldn't want to hear every time I played this album. Most of it was a list of thanks, including a bunch of corporate sponsors supporting the concert.

Generally speaking, this concert was much like a typical full Don Henley concert from that era, including versions of many songs he'd done with the Eagles. However, one interesting twist is that Jimmy Buffett joined the stage about halfway through the set, and sang lead on two of his songs, including his classic "Margaritaville." The other song he chose, "Volcano," was less well known, but it had an environmental theme that fit with the charity cause of the concert. Furthermore, Henley sang lead on part of that song, and it seems some of the lyrics were tailored just for this concert. After that, Buffett left the stage and it continued like a typical Henley solo concert.

This album is an hour and 21 minutes long.

Popgala '73, Sporthal de Vliegermolen, Voorburg, Netherlands, 3-9-1973, Part 3: The Eagles

The next act from the Popgala '73 rock festival is the Eagles. This is a particularly special one. At the time, the Eagles were an up and coming band, but not the superstars they would later become. Only three of their songs were broadcast on Dutch TV at the time. But probably due to their later fame, their entire set has been bootlegged with excellent quality.

The concert took place at a pivotal time for the Eagles. Their first album, simply called "Eagles," had been released in 1972 to moderate success, thanks to the hit single "Take It Easy." But their second album "Desperado" wasn't released until a month after this concert. But they played five songs from it for the first time anywhere: "Tequila Sunrise," "Saturday Night," "Certain Kind of Fool," "Outlaw Man," and "Out of Control."

Furthermore, the cover of "How Long" is particularly interesting. The Eagles played this song often in 1972 and 1973, but they never released it at the time. Their friend J. D. Souther wrote it, and he wanted to put it on his 1972 without having to compete with an Eagles version. But many years later, when the Eagles put out a reunion album in 2007, they finally did a version of "How Long," which became a radio hit for them. What's really interesting though is that I read that they decided to do this song after watching the YouTube video of their Popgala '73 performance of the song!

This also was a pivotal appearance for the band because I think it was the first time for them to get widespread TV exposure. Their appearance on a BBC TV show (which I've also posted here) took place later the same month.

This album is 51 minutes long.

California Jam, Ontario Motor Speedway, Ontario, CA, 4-6-1974, Part 3: The Eagles

The third act at the 1974 California Jam was the Eagles. (And yes, I know that, technically, their name is just "Eagles.")

Unfortunately, this is a short set, consisting of just five concise songs. I assumed there was a lot more that didn't get recorded, but I found a setlist that shows they only played one more song as an encore, "Tequila Sunrise." One has to keep in mind that although the Eagles would be massively popular later, they still weren't that big at the time of this concert. In fact, their first huge hit, "The Best of My Love," came out on album one month before this concert. But it wasn't released as a single until late 1974 and wouldn't become a Number One hit until 1975. This concert was key to exposing the band to a larger audience, especially through the TV broadcast.

One interesting thing about the Eagles set is that Jackson Browne performed as a de facto member of the band for the whole set. This is because band member Don Felder had to miss the concert due to the birth of a son around the same time. Browne was already a friend of the band, and co-wrote their hit song "Take It Easy." He alternated between keyboards and guitar, and sang backing vocals.

The sound quality of this set was the roughest of all the music I found from this festival. The bass and drums were way too loud. So I used the audio editing program UVR5 to lower the bass and drums way down in the mix. It sounds a lot better now. However, I think it's likely there was so banter between songs that got edited out of the version I found.

This album is only 18 minutes long, the shortest set by far from this festival. Note that the track numbering continues from the numbering of the previous set, in case you want to put all the tracks in one folder to be heard as one massive listen.

Don Henley - Riverbend, Cincinnati, OH, 7-23-1991

I already posted a Susanna Hoffs concert, in which she was the opening act for Don Henley. Both performances are available as soundboard bootlegs, so I figured why not post the Henley set as well? Here it is.

Like the Hoffs opening act, the sound quality was so excellent on this that I barely had to change a thing. As Henley mentioned in his comments between songs, this concert was being filmed so some songs could be shown on a TV show, and it was also being professionally recorded as a possible live album. And, in fact, as I write this in 2023, Henley has only released one live album, in 2002, that's a fair amount shorter than this one.

In my opinion, Henley's solo career peaked around 1989, with the release on his "The End of the Innocence" album. This was still part of a very long tour to promote that album. Three years after this, the Eagles would reunite, and he would put a good amount of his attention and talent to Eagles albums and tours. He also slowed his solo career way down, only releasing two solo studio albums in the thirty years since this show. So this was an ideal time for a live album. Too bad he never put it out, but now you can have it here.

As one would expect, Henley did a roughly even mix of Eagles songs and solo songs. He also did one unexpected cover, "River," by Joni Mitchell.

Although I didn't have to fix the music at all, I did trim the fat between songs some. Towards the end, there was a lot of cheering for encores. I shorten some of the applause. Also, near the end, he talked about some preservation efforts related to Walden Pond. I cut out a section where he listed a good chunk of guest authors for a book helping with that effort. That alone cut about two minutes.

This album is an hour and 58 minutes long.

The Eagles with Linda Ronstadt & Jackson Browne - Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, Beacon Theater, New York City, 7-19-1974

In the 1970s, there was a U.S. music TV show called "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert." In 1974, that show had an episode focusing on the Eagles, with guests Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne. The three artists were musically linked. The Eagles started out as Ronstadt's backing band in 1971. Browne helped the Eagles get a record contract, and his song "Take It Easy" was co-written by Eagles band member Glenn Fry (who also lived in the same apartment building as he did for a time). Most of the songs here were performed by the Eagles, but Ronstadt got to sing lead on three songs, and Browne on two.

This TV show looms larger in retrospect. By 1974, the Eagles, Ronstadt, and Browne were all successful, to be sure. But as the 1970s went on, they would become much more successful, each of them becoming musical superstars for a time. So this was a very inspired gathering of talent.

The sound quality is very good. I'm guessing that all of the songs appear here, but some of the talking between songs has been lost. I'm basing that on the fact that Ronstadt got introduced but Browne did not. Surely he deserved an introduction too. Anyway, the main thing is that the music survives.

This album is an hour and seven minutes long.

The Eagles - The Summit, Houston, TX, 11-6-1976

I just came across this bootleg Eagles concert today. I was so impressed with the sound quality that I'm posting it straight away.

In 1976, the Eagles had a new lead guitarist, Joe Walsh, who was already a star. They put out an album at the end of the year, "Hotel California," that went on to sell over 30 million copies worldwide. One of the band's singers, Don Henley, later said that the band "probably peaked on 'Hotel California. After that, we started growing apart as collaborators and as friends." So this is a particularly good time to hear a concert for them, especially for hearing their earlier songs done with Walsh's lead guitar.

The 40th Anniversary Edition of "Hotel California" has included a concert in Los Angeles in October 1976. But that one only has ten songs on it, whereas this one has 17. I think that makes this a better listen, especially since the sound quality is outstanding. It so good that at times you'd think this was a studio session instead.

There were no problems with this bootleg. However, I did boost the audience noise after most of the songs. The soundboard was so pristine that the amount of cheering didn't sound right. Also, I cut out some dead air between songs, but not much. There is hardly any between song banter. I guess the band members just weren't feeling talkative that day.

Only two of the songs played were from the "Hotel California" album, which would get released a month later. But one of those is the song "Hotel California" itself, which of course would go on to become an all-time classic. Also, the concert is interesting in that four of the songs were done by Walsh outside the Eagles: "Turn to Stone," "Funk No. 49," "Rocky Mountain Way," and "Walk Away."

This concert is an hour and 38 minutes long.

The Eagles - BBC In Concert, Golders Green Hippodrome, London, Britain, 3-20-1973

Here's yet another BBC TV show performance from the early 1970s. This time, it's the Eagles. (And, yes, I know that technically their name is just "Eagles," but I'll note that at the start of this TV show they were billed as "The Eagles.")

These days, it seems the Eagles are just a bunch of greatest hits that get played everywhere, all the time, especially "Hotel California." But at the time of this concert, the band was just starting out. They had released one album in 1972, simply called "Eagles," and were on the verge of releasing a second one, which came out a few weeks later. Most of those blockbuster hits were still in the future. In my opinion, it's rather refreshing that this has a number of songs on it that haven't been overplayed to death.

The BBC concert is only 35 minutes long. I learned that when Neil Young played for this BBC TV show in 1971, he did a number of songs that weren't aired and so didn't get bootlegged. I figure it's the same here. The short length is a bummer, but in terms of concert recordings from the band's early years, I doubt there are any with a sound quality as good as this one.

As far as I can tell, this is the only worthwhile recording the Eagles did for the BBC in the 1970s. Since they're an American band, it's not that surprising that their BBC exposure was limited at the time. They did record "Hotel California" for the BBC TV show "Old Grey Whistle Test" in 1977, and I considered adding that as a bonus track, but there was way too much crowd noise to make it a good listen, in my opinion. But since the concert is relatively short, I added an extra song at the end from another TV appearance in 1973.

This album is 40 minutes long, including the extra song at the end.

UPDATE: On February 14, 2024, I updated the mp3 download file. I removed a song at the end, "Already Gone," because it was from the 1974 "California Jam" concert, and I later posted the full set. So I didn't need to repeat one of those songs here. I also found out the exact location of the concert, the Golders Green Hippodrome, and added that to the title.

The Eagles - Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, CA, 6-8-1994

Sometimes when I'm putting these albums together, things work out so nicely that it's almost uncanny. This is one of those times. :) I just posted a bootleg of the Eagles performing a full concert for MTV Unplugged in 1994. After doing two shows for MTV, the Eagles went on a lengthy tour. When I was getting ready to post that concert yesterday, I wondered if they'd played some songs on that tour that they didn't play for MTV Unplugged. I'd expected maybe a couple, because the Unplugged show was two hours long and included lots of big hits. To my surprise, I found a concert from two months later in 1994 that had almost another hour and a half of different songs!

So I've made this album. It contains absolutely zero songs in the MTV Unplugged concert I just posted, making it the ideal complimentary album to that one. And while the song quality for the Unplugged show is fantastic, this is nearly as good. It too comes from a soundboard, with the audience noise fairly low compared to the music from the band.

The Eagles are one of the most successful musical acts of all time, and Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Joe Walsh had lots of solo success on top of that. The Unplugged show was dominated by Eagles hits and only had a smattering of their solo hits. This recording, by contrast, has a much higher percentage of solo material, including some all-time classics, like "The Boys of Summer," "Life's Been Good," and "Rocky Mountain Way." Including the quasi-bonus tracks (which I will explain below), only five of the songs here were originally done by the Eagles, while 12 were not. In a way, I think this is the more interesting concert in that it allows you to hear Eagles versions of solo songs.

As for those three quasi-bonus tracks, after all the hits the Eagles played at the MTV Unplugged concert, and then at this concert, there are still more big hits that they didn't include! Three of them - "Walk Away," "Sunset Grill," and "The Long Run" - were done for a concert 10 years later that was released on video. So I've included them. You might or might not want to keep them, depending on what you think of adding in performances from a full decade later.

Note though that even with those three songs included, there are still more big hits not included, such as "Witchy Woman," "Turn to Stone," "All Night Long," "A Life of Illusion," "The End of the Innocence," "The Last Worthless Evening," "The Heat Is On," and more.

For the album cover, I used another photo of the band at their MTV Unplugged concert. I suspect it's from the concert video of that. I found surprisingly few good photos from their 1994 tour, other than that. In February 2025, I upgraded the image slightly with the help of the Krea AI program.

The Eagles - MTV Unplugged, Warner Brothers Studios, Burbank, CA, 4-25-1994

Here's a remarkable bootleg recording. I never knew it existed until I luckily stumbled upon it yesterday. I've immediately fixed it up so I can share it. In short, in 1994, the Eagles got back together after 14 years and recorded a concert for MTV Unplugged. They later released it as the album "Hell Freezes Over" with four additional studio tracks. It went on to sell millions and millions of copies. This is not that. But the very next night they did a second MTV Unplugged show, and this is that. This is actually better than the "Hell Freezes Over" in several ways I will explain. If you're an Eagles fan, you definitely will want to hear this.

First off, I have to point out the incredible sound quality. Even though it's a bootleg, the sound is so good that sometimes you can hear the squeaking of fingers sliding on the guitar strings. Clearly, this was professionally recorded as part of a plan to make the "Hell Freezes Over" album, but the other night was chosen instead.

What's even better though is that this is a full concert, lasting three minutes shy of two hours, whereas "Hell Freezes Over" only includes about 60 minutes of live music. There are 22 songs here, compared to 11 live songs on that album. As mentioned above, that album had the four studio tracks as well. This concert has those same four new songs ("Get Over It," "Love Will Keep Us Alive," "The Girl from Yesterday," and "Learn to Be Still"), but in live versions. Even the live tracks on "Hell Freezes Over" apparently had a lot of tweaking and overdubbing done to them. There's none of that here. Nor is any necessary. The performance is pretty much flawless. (But the band is known for being perfectionist, so I suppose the tinkering isn't that surprising.)

Ironically, given what I just said about tinkering, I did some editing myself - but not of the music. One thing I did was cut out a lot of dead air between songs. Because this was being recorded to potentially be shown on TV, the band wanted to get everything just right, so there were longer delays than usual between songs. There also were false starts to two of the songs. I got rid of those as well. Additionally, I separated all the talking between songs onto their own tracks and usually upped the volume on those some.

In my opinion, if you want just one live Eagles recording, this is the one to get. It was recorded right at the tail end of their main hit making era, with the five most important band members (from the "Long Run" era) still in the band and relatively young and vital. And it's not just a carbon copy of their studio recordings. The first portion of it is in acoustic format, mostly. They go back to rocking with electric instruments for the second half, but even that is different due to the inclusion of a full orchestra.

Steve Winwood & the All-Star Garage Band - City of Hope Benefit Concert, Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles, CA, 10-16-1996

Merry Christmas and happy holidays in general. Here's something that I think is extra interesting. I had no idea it even existed until I stumbled across it a few days ago on YouTube while looking for something else. I'll bet you have no idea this existed either, but you should give it a listen.

In 1996, there was a high-profile black-tie gala in Los Angeles for the City of Hope, a foundation raising money to fight several deadly diseases. All sorts of rich and famous people attended, and it raised over $3 million. For the evening's concert, a very unusual mix of famous musicians got together to create what they called the "All-Star Garage Band": Steve Winwood, Don Henley, Bryan Adams, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, John Mellencamp, Eddie Van Halen, Me'shell Ndegeocello, Bobby Keys, Tony Rich, Richie Sambora, Jim Price, Narada Michael Walden, Paul Shaffer, and Max Weinberg.

It was different than your usual concert for this sort of event, where famous musicians take turns go on stage, sing a song or two, then leave the stage. Instead, in keeping with the "garage band" concept, most of them stayed on stage for the whole show, and played various instruments and/or sang backing vocals when they weren't in the spotlight. For instance, in addition to singing a couple of songs, Don Henley of the Eagles either played cowbell or a full drum set on some of the other songs.

I find this a fascinating mixture of musicians that I never imagined would play together. What's even more interesting is that in nearly all cases, they did classic songs that they normally didn't play. Nobody was promoting their latest record, and nobody even sang any song they actually wrote (with the exception of Steve Winwood, who co-wrote "Gimme Some Lovin'"). It seems they had a ball playing the songs they all loved and grew up with.

Winwood sang the most songs (though not by much), and played organ on all the songs, so I've filed this album in the Winwood part of my music collection. I've helped beef up the Winwood emphasis by adding some songs featuring him at the start and end of this album that come from different concerts around the same time. The first two songs, "Higher Ground" and "Gimme Some Lovin'," are duets between Stevie Wonder and Winwood at a 1997 awards show. This means that "Gimme Some Lovin'" is performed twice on this album, but I figure that's acceptable because one version is a duet (plus, it's a fantastic song!). The last two songs come from a 1996 Chic concert in Tokyo, Japan. Both Winwood and Slash joined in on Winwood's hit "Higher Love" and the Jimi Hendrix classic "Stone Free." Winwood sang lead and played organ on those songs, while Slash did all the guitar soloing.

Speaking of guitar soloing, one interesting thing about the main "All-Star Garage Band" show is Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing. Personally, I'm not a really big fan of the band Van Halen, although I do enjoy their well known songs. But I gather it's been very rare for Eddie Van Halen to play lead guitar outside of that band (unlike, say, Eric Clapton, who has played on zillions of other musician's projects). Yet Van Halen is all over this. He plays his easily identifiable style of soloing on a bunch of songs (unfortunately not giving guitarist Richie Sambora much of a chance to shine).

The recording sound quality is good, not great. I searched the Internet fairly thoroughly, but all I could find of the show was some YouTube videos, from a variety of sources. All of them come from a VH-1 broadcast of the concert, but some were recorded better than others. In particular, "Stay with Me" sounds rougher than the rest, but I've included it here since I deemed it just good enough. For two of the songs played at that concert, I couldn't find any versions at all: "Get Ready" by Tony Rich and "Tequila" by Bobby Keys. If anyone has those, please let me know, and I'll add them in. And if you have better versions of other songs, or even have one consistent recording of the whole thing, also please let me know so I can upgrade the sound.

From what I understand, the show wasn't broadcast on VH-1 until 1997. By that time, the footage was edited so that the band leader (and longtime Tonight Show with David Letterman sidekick) Paul Shaffer gave introductions to each song that were recorded later in a different place. I've cut out what bits of these intros the YouTube videos had, which often wasn't much. That means there's no actual between song dialogue by the people on stage, since all that had been edited out of the broadcast. Also, there generally are only a few seconds of applause at the end of each song before Shaffer resumed talking or the broadcast cut to a commercial. So I've added more applause to the ends of most songs, patching in the applause from the few songs that did have a decent applause length.

The core "All-Star Garage Band" recording is 42 minutes long. With the added Winwood bonus tracks, the full album is 58 minutes long. And by the way, since I got these from YouTube videos, you can go to that website and watch the footage of all of these songs. It's interesting to see so many big stars often playing more humble backing musician roles.

For the cover, I found two nice photos for the actual event, and I couldn't decide which one to use. So I simply used both of them. The top photo shows, from right to left: Bryan Adams, Max Weinberg, Richie Sambora, Eddie Van Halen, and Steve Winwood. The bottom photo was taken that same evening, back stage. It shows, from right to left: Don Henley, Van Halen, Winwood, Sheryl Crow, Narada Michael Walden, and John Mellencamp. Unfortunately, not everyone on stage that evening could be captured in these two photos, but at least it shows most of them.
