Rodney Crowell, Rosanne Cash, Emmylou Harris & Albert Lee - In Session (CHCH-TV Studios, Hamilton, Canada, 12-12-1983)

So far, I've posted three episodes of the "In Session" TV show. It was a special show, because it combined different musical acts together and had them perform for an entire studio session instead of just a duet or two. Here's the fourth one I've found, starring Rodney Crowell, Rosanne Cash, Emmylou Harris and Albert Lee.

This one is different from the other episodes I've found so far. Those others are the episodes broadcast on T.V. This one consisted of three hours of raw footage that was later edited down to an hour or so for the final broadcast. I haven't been able to find the final version, actually. That means there are no interview segments between songs, which must have been recorded at a different time. But instead, one gets the actual banter of them talking to each other. Also, there's well over an hour over music here. I don't know what made the final version, but I presume there are some extra songs that didn't make it into the show. Two songs at the end are second versions of songs performed earlier. But that still means an hour and 10 minutes of music, after one takes out all the banter and the two second takes.

It's nice to have not just two or three music stars performing together, but four. I think the glue between them mainly was Rodney Crowell. At the time, he was married to Rosanne Cash, so that was an obvious link. (They stayed married from 1979 to 1992.) Also, both he and Albert Lee were members of Emmylou Harris's band in the 1970s. Furthermore, Harris and Cash covered songs written by Crowell. But no doubt all four of these people had crossed paths many times prior to this session.

In this recording, they performed in various combinations. In the song list below, I generally only mentioned the lead vocalist or vocalists, and sometimes also mentioning prominent backing vocalists. But they collaborated more than that. For instance, most of the guitar solos were played by either Albert Lee or Rodney Crowell, although the video shows there was another unnamed lead guitarist in the backing band that also took the occasional solo. And I didn't credit all the backing vocals, especially when most of them sang together.

I cut out of heck of a lot of dead air. Just consider that this was cut by about an hour total. In the beginning especially, there were long stretches of dead air between songs. But by the end, there was a lot more chatter, as it seemed everyone got more relaxed and friendly with each other. I tried to keep the vast majority of that, though I cut out some boring bits. One song, "Old Pipeliner," has "[Edit]" in the title. That's because the YouTube video I took this from was split in two, and the split was right in the middle of that song. But there was a little bit of overlap, so I was able to splice that together without any loss of music.

By the way, I converted that YouTube video to audio, and chopped it into mp3s. As I did so, I had to figure out the song titles. I think I got them all right, but if I made mistakes, please let me know.

This album is an hour and 28 minutes long.

Making the cover of this album was tough, because I wanted to get all four of the main performers in the image, and they typically were spread out in the studio. I found one point where the four of them were all singing, and the camera panned across them. So I took multiple screenshots. Then I used Photoshop to squeeze them together. Their faces also were blurry because the video was low-res. So I took additional screenshots of just their heads, and pasted those in, for better clarity in those areas.

Various Artists - Gershwin Prize for Popular Song Honoring Willie Nelson, D.A.R. Constitution Hall, Washington, DC, 11-18-2015

Back in 2023, I posted a Joni Mitchell tribute concert. You can find that here:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2023/04/various-artists-joni-mitchell-gershwin.html

The reason I mention that off the bat is because it turns out that was a "Gershwin Prize for Popular Song" tribute concert, and I've found a few more of them. Here's one from 2015, honoring Willie Nelson. (By the way, I just redid the cover art of the Joni Mitchell one, so all of the ones I post will have the same font and so forth.)

This award is actually bestowed by a branch of the U.S. government, the Library of Congress. It was first awarded in 2007. It's been an annual thing since then, although four years were skipped. (One skip was due to the Covid pandemic, in 2021. I don't know why there weren't awards ceremonies in 2007, 2012, and 2017.)

Here's the Wikipedia page about the prize:

Gershwin Prize - Wikipedia

Just in the past few days, I've managed to find several more of these concerts, and I plan to post all of them here soon.

These are the ones I've found so far:

2007 Paul Simon
2009 Stevie Wonder
2010 Paul McCartney
2012 Burt Bacharach & Hal David
2014 Billy Joel
2015 Willie Nelson (here)
2020 Garth Brooks
2022 Lionel Richie
2023 Joni Mitchell (posted already)
2024 Elton John & Bernie Taupin

Meanwhile, here are the ones I can't find:
2013 Carole King
2016 Smokey Robinson
2017 Tony Bennett
2019 Gloria & Emilio Estefan

I'm calling on one of you out there to please help me find the rest. It seems videos of these other ones are available, via the PBS website. For instance, here's the Lionel Richie one:

Gershwin Prize | Lionel Richie: Gershwin Prize | Season 2022 | Episode 1 | PBS

However, to be able to watch them, one needs to pay for the KPBS Passport. So if anyone has that, and can record the audio and/or video of it and share that with me, then I'll be able to post the other ones as well. It would be a share if those remain out of reach, especially the Carole King, and Smokey Robinson ones.

Speaking of remaining out of reach, this Willie Nelson was very hard to find. For instance, it's not on YouTube, and everything like this is on YouTube. But I was able to find a single mp3 file of the entire concert. Then I broke it up into mp3s for each song.

One interesting thing about this concert, compared to the other Gershwin Prize concerts I've found so far, is that there weren't that many guest stars, but many of the guest stars got to perform two songs instead of one. For instance, that was the case with Neil Young, Paul Simon, and Alison Kraus. And in the cases of Neil Young and Paul Simon, I thought I'd seen just about every unique songs they've performed, but I've never seen any recordings or mentions of these.

However, the big star of the show, naturally, was Willie Nelson himself. He performed four songs at the end, including a duet with Cyndi Lauper.

By the way, if you look at the song list, you may wonder who "David Mao" is. He was the Librarian of Congress at the time. I've noticed that in all these concerts, the person in that position gets to give the introductory speech to the inductee. That must be an interesting perk for that government job.

Everything here is officially unreleased, but the sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and ten minutes long.

Rosanne Cash - Crawl into the Promised Land - Non-Album Tracks (2019-2024)

I've posted a lot of Rosanne Cash stray tracks albums in recent years. I believe I've posted nine before this one. Finally, I get caught up to the present day.

All but three of the songs here have been officially released in one way or another. Three songs, "We’re All in This Together Now," "Crawl into the Promised Land," and "The Killing Fields," were A-sides of singles not connected to any Rosanne Cash albums. "Time" is from a Tom Waits tribute album. "I've Got a Crush on You" is from a George Gershwin album. "I Am a Pilgrim" is from a Doc Watson tribute album. "Loving Her Was Easier" is from a Willie Nelson live album.

Cash has been married to John Leventhal since 1995. Leventhal is mostly a producer and back-up musician, but in early 2024, he released a rare solo album. The final two songs here are from that.

That just leaves the three unreleased songs: "Tryin' to Get Home," "Farewell Angelina," and "Crescent City." They're all from concert bootlegs. But the sound is generally close to the studio stuff.

This album is 44 minutes long.

01 Time (Rosanne Cash)
02 We’re All in This Together Now (John Paul White & Rosanne Cash)
03 Tryin' to Get Home (Rosanne Cash)
04 Farewell Angelina (Rosanne Cash)
05 Crawl into the Promised Land (Rosanne Cash)
06 The Killing Fields (Rosanne Cash)
07 Crescent City (Rosanne Cash & Lucinda Williams)
08 I've Got a Crush on You (Michael Feinstein & Rosanne Cash)
09 Loving Her Was Easier [Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again] (Rosanne Cash with Kris Kristofferson)
10 I Am a Pilgrim (Rosanne Cash)
11 If You Only Knew (John Leventhal & Rosanne Cash)
12 That's All I Know about Arkansas (John Leventhal & Rosanne Cash)

The cover is almost identical to the cover for Cash's "Crawl into the Promised Land." All I did was remove John Leventhal's name, which had been under Cash's, and cropped it a little.

Luka Bloom, David Byrne, Rosanne Cash & Lou Reed - In Their Own Words, The Bottom Line, New York City, 2-19-1993, Late Show

Happy new year, everyone. At first glance, this may look exactly like the last album I posted, but don't be deceived. Yes, the cover is almost exactly the same, but the photo is slightly different. And the title is almost exactly the same, but this is the late show and the other post is the early show.

What's important is that the performance is totally different. Although the format and the artists are the same, the vast majority of the songs performed are different from the early show. Plus, there's a considerable amount of talking between songs, and all of that is different as well.

I believe these are the songs that were played in both the early and late shows: "Tentative Decisions," "Ready for This World," "Busload of Faith," "The Wheel," and "I Need Love."

Like the early show, this is an unreleased concert. Also like the early show, it's either a soundboard or an audience boot that sounds better than most soundboards. I'm guessing it's an audience boot due to the fact that the audience noise was much louder than the music or talking on stage, which is typical of audience boots. But seriously, it sounds fantastic. And I fixed all the songs so the music and talking is much louder and the cheering is much quieter.

Also, there were a few snags with the recording of the early show, such as sections that were missing and had to be filled in from a different source. But there were no such problems with the late show.  The recording was basically flawless.

The one slight disappointment with this concert is that it's shorter than the early show. This is two hours and 14 minutes long. By contrast, the early show is two hours and 47 minutes long. But a lot of that time difference is due to more talking in the early show. The music only is an hour and 16 minutes here, just ten minutes less than the early show.

Like I did with the early show, since there's so much talking - about an hour - I've made two versions of this album, one with the talking and one without. I think the interview sections are quite good and worth listening to at least once. But the music only version has more repeat listening value.

Here's the version with the music and the talking:

As I mentioned above, the cover photo is almost the same, but different. Clearly, it was taken at almost the exact same time as the other photo. However, there are some differences, such as the way Luka Bloom's head is turned on the far right, or how David Byrne's head is turned on the far left. The other one is in color and this one was only in black and white. But I used the Palette program to colorize it. Then I did some further work in Photoshop to make sure the colors matched those of the other photo.

Luka Bloom, David Byrne, Rosanne Cash & Lou Reed - In Their Own Words, The Bottom Line, New York City, 2-19-1993, Early Show

This is a very rare, unique, and interesting unreleased concert. It's also quite long, at nearly three hours, and the sound quality is great. Furthermore, it's just the early show, and I'll be posting the late show - with the same performers but mostly different songs - soon.

The key figure behind this concert appears to be radio DJ Vin Scelsa. In the early 1990s, he hosted many concerts in New York City that brought together combinations of singer-songwriters. (I previously posted a concert he hosted with Rosanne Cash, David Byrne, and Lucinda Williams.) This concert appears to be part of a series he hosted called "In Their Own Words." For this one, I read that he first got Lou Reed to participate, then had Reed pick the other artists. Reed picked Talking Heads leader David Byrne and Rosanne Cash, one of Johnny Cash's daughters and at the time still mainly seen as a country music star. The surprise choice was Irish singer-songwriter Luka Bloom. At this point, Bloom was relatively unknown, having only released three solo albums. But Reed and Bloom had crossed paths due to performing at some of the same festivals in Europe the year before, and Reed liked Bloom's music.

This concert just featured the four artists performing solo acoustic. The format was "in the round," meaning each artist would sing a song in turn until everyone was done, and then the process would repeat, going around and around. (There was only one exception, when Reed played two songs in a row.) But this concert is also unusual in that these was extensive talking between songs, mostly in interview format between DJ Scelsa and whoever was singing the next song. The theme of the evening was songwriting, so most of the questions had to do with that. There's so much talking, in fact, that it took up nearly half of the concert. That has less replay value than the songs, so I've created two versions, one with all the talking and one with just the music.

The sound quality is excellent. I suspect the source is an audience bootleg, because originally the clapping was way louder than the music or talking. But if that's the case, it's one of the best audience boots I've ever heard, and actually sounds better than most soundboards! I had to adjust every track to boost the volume of the music and especially the talking while lowering the volume of the applause, but now it all sounds great.

There were a few missing parts of the recording. Luckily though, there's a second bootleg of the same concert. The sound quality is worse, but it was mostly just for talking parts, so it didn't matter much. Additionally, I ran those bits through Adobe's "Enhanced Speech" program, and that helped them sound nearly as good as the rest. Two tracks were I had to splice different versions together have "[Edit]" in their names.

This album (the talking and music version) is two hours and 47 minutes long.

Rosanne Cash with David Byrne & Lucinda Williams - Columbia Records Radio Hour, New York City, 5-16-1993

Here's a particularly interesting concert by Rosanne Cash. It's rather short, less than an hour, but what makes it special is that David Byrne (of the Talking Heads) and Lucinda Williams take part as well. Both Byrne and Williams sing lead on at least one song, then sing a duet together, and also help Cash with vocals on other songs.

I don't know much about the "Columbia Records Radio Hour." From what little I've gathered, it was a weekly radio show based in New York City. It was run by the radio station WFUV, and was syndicated to about 100 other radio stations across the U.S. I think it only existed in 1993 and 1994 or thereabouts, and then got cancelled. I gather that it featured musical artists who were signed to Columbia Records, as Cash was at the time.

What's unfortunate is that I've come across very few recording from this show. That's a shame, because lots of great artists had full hour shows, including Bruce Springsteen, Bruce Cockburn, Shawn Colvin, Lou Reed, Toad the Wet Sprocket, etc... There are two "best of" collections that have been officially released, "Columbia Records Radio Hour, Vol. 1," and "Vol, 2." The entire Jeff Buckley show has been officially released. I have the bootleg of the Leonard Cohen show, and I should post that here soon. But other than that, I've had a hard time even finding bootlegs of the other shows. If you have any, please let me know.

As for this show, I had a bootleg of it for many years. The sound is excellent. It was recorded in front of a small audience, so you get some applause, but the sound quality is more like a studio session than a concert. In 2023, five of the songs from this concert were released as bonus tracks on a 30th anniversary edition of Cash's 1993 album "The Wheel," but I didn't use those versions since the bootleg sounded great already.

If you're a Rosanne Cash fan, you should definitely listen to this, but it's good for David Byrne and Lucinda Williams fans too. What's especially great is hearing the rapport between the three of them. It's clear they were all friends, and singing together for fun.

This album is 46 minutes long.

I couldn't find any photos of Cash, Bryne, and Williams together. There are only a few of Cash and Bryne together, and none of them very good. So I went with a photo of Cash and Williams. Unfortunately, it's from waaaaay after this concert. It's from a 2015 concert, in fact. But I honestly don't think they look that different in this picture than how they looked in the 1990s.

Rosanne Cash - Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis, MN, 2-9-1991

I'm posting this Rosanne Cash bootleg concert even though it's rather similar to another one I posted, at Slim's in San Francisco, just two months before this. Both were promoting her 1990 album "Interiors." I just really like Cash, and I especially like "Interiors," which I think is her best album. But the concerts are actually fairly different. The Slim's one has three songs this was does not have, and this one has nine songs that one doesn't have (helped by the fact this one is about 20 minutes longer). Plus there's a lot of banter between songs, and all of that is different. Oh, and the Slim's concert featured her then-husband country star Rodney Crowell on some songs, and he wasn't present for this one.

Another key factor is that both concerts sound great. Like the Slim's one, this one is a pristine soundboard. The only thing I had to fix was that I boosted her vocals for all the banter. But I tend to do that for most concert recordings, since people don't talk nearly as loud as they sing.

Cash played acoustic guitar, and was backed by a lead guitarist and bassist. But strangely, both of them had laryngitis at the time, so weren't able to sing much. For one song, she actually brought out her manager to sing harmony vocals!

One think I really appreciate about her "Interiors" album is that it's so emotionally honest and intense. I even liken it to John Lennon's great 1970 "Plastic Ono Band" album in that way. Her marriage to Rodney Crowell was falling apart, and she wasn't shy about documenting that in song. This concert has that in spades, with some unreleased songs like "Private Moments," "Bedroom Lies," and "Road Widow" that apparently were too revealing or embarrassing to include on the album.

This concert is an hour and 28 minutes long.

Boy, did I get lucky with the cover photo, because it's from this exact concert. Furthermore, I thought this concert was from 9-2-1991, but I found out from the photo that it actually was from 2-9-1991, so I was able to fix that.

Rosanne Cash - Slim's, San Francisco, CA, 12-15-1990

My favorite Rosanne Cash album is her 1990 album "Interiors." In my opinion, it's a five star album, with deeply personal and emotional lyrics. Yet it was largely overlooked at the time, I think because Cash was a country music star, and the album was more in a singer-songwriter mode that didn't fit the country radio format. But given how much I like that album, and how much I like acoustic music, this concert is a no-brainer for me. It's an acoustic concert supporting the album.

This is an excellent sounding soundboard bootleg. Cash naturally played most of the songs from "Interiors," as well as hits from her earlier country star phase. One interesting twist is that she played the unreleased song "Road Widow." It probably was unreleased because it was so harsh about her husband at the time, country star Rodney Crowell. But then immediately after the song was over, Crowell came out on stage and sang some songs with her! She even complimented him for being a good sport in taking the criticism. However, it seems their problems couldn't be fixed, because they divorced in 1992.

This album is an hour and eight minutes long.

Nanci Griffith, Rosanne Cash & Mary Chapin Carpenter - A Late Show, BBC, The Bottom Line, New York City, 8-29-1992

Today, as I write this, August 13, 2021, singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith died. The cause is unknown, but she was 68 years old.

I'm not a huge Nanci Griffith fan, but I do like some of her material, especially her 1988 live album "One Fair Summer Evening." It so happens that I have something to post from her, so here it is, in tribute to her music career.

This is a concert recorded for the BBC TV show "A Late Show" in 1992. (I'm not sure if the date I have for it, August 29, 1992, is the date it was recorded, or the date it was broadcast, but it's the only date related to the show I know. If anyone knows the exact recording date if it's different, please let me know.) Actually, this is equal parts a concert of Nanci Griffith, Rosanne Cash, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Just the three of the sat on the same stage together with their guitars, and took turns playing songs. As I write this, you can find the video of the show on YouTube. You can see from that that occasionally one or two of the others would join in with backing vocals and/or guitar, especially near the end, but most of the time it's just each individual performer doing their own songs.

Nanci Griffith played the first song, then Rosanne Cash played the second one, and Mary Chapin Carpenter the third one. That rotating pattern continued for the rest of the show without exception. The last song was one of Carpenter's, so each of them did an equal number of songs.

I wish there were more concerts like this, with similar artists performing on stage together. The sound quality is excellent, as you'd expect from the BBC, and the performance was solid all around. The only thing I'm not happy about is that it's rather short, at only 42 minutes long. I suspect the concert was longer, but it was cut down to fit into the time allotted for the TV show.

For the cover art, I took a screenshot from the YouTube video of this concert that I mentioned above. It's not an ideal cover, esp. since the quality is rather low-res, but I figured it was important to use a picture of all three of the stars together, and I couldn't find any images of them together outside of that video. (By the way, Carpenter is on the left, Cash is in the middle, and Griffith is on the right.)

In February, 2025, I decided to completely replace the cover image, after deciding it was too dark and blurry. I took a different screenshot from the YouTube video. Then I used the Krea AI program to improve it a bit.

Rosanne Cash - Strawberry Music Festival, Camp Mather, Yosemite, CA, 8-31-1997

Musical associate Lil Panda recently posted this elsewhere on the Internet. I did some minor editing, mainly boosting the vocals for the banter between songs. But I didn't have to do much, because the sound quality is fantastic.

This is a really great Rosanne Cash bootleg concert, partially because of the sound quality, but also because of the set list at an interesting time in her career. In 1996, Cash put out the album "10 Song Demo," which consisted of acoustic demos. She didn't tour much to support it in 1996, and in 1997, according to setlist.fm, she only played two concerts. In 1998, she started to record a new album, but that was halted when she developed a polyp on her vocal chords. She was unable to sing for nearly three years. She didn't come out with another album until "Rules of Travel" in 2003.

So this concert is a peek at what might have been, had she continued to record and perform into 1998. After her acoustic 1996 album, she was back to rocking for most of this concert, with some acoustic moments thrown in. She played "September When It Comes," an original song that would first appear on her 2003 album. Furthermore, she did a full-band version of "Western Wall," which also would appear on her 2003 album.

She also played the nice original "Greg and George." Weirdly, she would never release this as such, except in 2013 she had an obscure Internet-only release for charity of the song "Jim and George," which is nearly identical in all respects except for the slightly changed title. (I put that on the stray tracks album "Land of Dreams.")

She also played some rare covers, such as "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye," "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," and a long, jammy version of the Beatles' "Things We Said Today."

When she returned to playing concerts in 2003, her set list was significantly different. She said goodbye to many of her older songs and moved into more of a folky direction. So this concert caught her at a time of transformation.

This concert is an hour and 25 minutes long.

Perhaps the reason that Cash played this concert in a year when she didn't go on tour was because of its unique and remarkable location, in the middle of Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park! She commented on this several times during the concert. I couldn't find any photos of her at the concert, or even good photos of her on stage from around 1997 at all. So instead, I decided to show the concert stage for the cover art, since it is so unusual. This photo doesn't feature Cash, and I don't even know what year it's from. But it is the stage she played this concert on, and she mentioned it was a night concert, so I picked a photo of it at night.

Once again, I was assisted by PJ of "Albums I Wish Existed," who turned the photo into an album cover. I asked him to highlight the tall trees as much as possible. He did, but the square shape of the album cover can't do the trees justice. They tower much higher off the top of the picture frame.

Rosanne Cash - Live from Zone C - Living Room Concert, New York City, 11-2-2011

I've been posting lots of home concerts from lots of different musicians lately, with more to come. But one musician who I'm surprised has been missing so far is Rosanne Cash. She's done some songs here and there recorded from home during the coronavirus lockdown, but not enough for an album of music. Hopefully that'll change by and by. But in the meantime, here's something similar from her. She had the home concert thing down pat nine years in advance, back in 2011.

In that year, Cash's record company had released "The Essential Rosanne Cash," a double album compilation of her best songs from throughout her career. To help promote that, Cash performed a concert in the living room of her New York City apartment, with just her guitar plus her husband John Leventhal on another guitar. (Leventhal is also her longtime musical collaborator and frequent songwriting partner.) The concert was professionally recorded for both audio and video. However, the audio has never been released on record, and only the video for about eight of the songs came out on the Internet. This is the whole concert, which is a few minutes short of an hour long.

One thing that makes this concert special is that instead of playing her usual set list, she limited herself to playing the 13 most popular songs out of the 36 songs on "The Essential Rosanne Cash."  So she played a lot of songs that she hadn't played in years, or even in decades. And I'm especially a fan of the solo acoustic format, without the sound quality issues of having an audience. Weirdly, she'd never released a live album in her long career. But if I were to pick just one live concert to hear from her, I think it would be this one.

Various Artists - Can't Be Here Now - Mother's Day Special Home Concert, 5-10-2020

In late March 2020, singer songwriter Billy Bragg wrote a song about the difficulty of being separated from loved ones during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown. He called it "Can't Be There Today," and posted it on YouTube. From that, he came up with the idea to have a special home concert on Mother's Day, May 10, 2020, to help people celebrate that day in these weird times. The concert is named "Can't Be Here Now" as a play on that song title.

A lot of the best singer songwriter types joined in, recording one or two songs from wherever they happened to be hunkered down, and then sending in their videos. So I think this is unique in my music collection in that this "concert" has no fixed single location. Some of the musicians spoke a little bit before or after their songs, and others didn't. Most of the songs have some connection to a mother's day or at least a mother theme, but a few do not. It's a pretty loose gathering of performances, with no fixed rules.

No less than seven of the artists are ones that I've posted albums of here at this blog: Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rosanne Cash, the Indigo Girls, Jorma Kaukonen, Joan Osborne, KT Tunstall, and Loudon Wainwright III. There are some other big names for this type of music as well, such as Bragg, Steve Earle, Rufus Wainwright, and Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields. I have to confess that I wasn't that familiar with the others, but hopefully if you listen to this you'll discover some new artists, just as I have.

Since this is a collection of home recorded videos, the audio quality is variable. I did my best to adjust the volume and improve the mix whenever I could. The result is pretty good overall. But there were a couple of significant problems I couldn't fix. Valerie June recorded her song in the great outdoors. That looked nice on video, but late in the song a big gust of wind came along and blew on the microphone for about thirty seconds, rendering that part of the song unlistenable. Luckily, it was just a repeat of the chorus, so I was able to salvage the song by editing that part out. Some of her talking had to be cut out due to more wind.

Also, the Indigo Girls played their best known song "Closer to Fine." But the vocals of the lead vocalist Emily Saliers was way down in the mix compared to the guitar and the other vocalist Amy Ray. I couldn't do anything to fix that, so it's a rather unusual version.

The concert is nearly two hours long. If you don't like some of the artists and/or songs, you can edit your version down to just the ones you do like, and you'll probably still have a fairly lengthy album.

Oh, and by the way, I just posted the fourth of Norah Jones's home concert albums a day ago. It turns out I missed including one song and got the name of another song wrong. So if you've downloaded that one, I recommend you do it again, now that I've fixed those things.

The video of the entire concert is on YouTube, if you want to watch it as well as hear it. (Just search for key words in the title.) So I could have used screenshots from that. However, if I did that, I would have to favor some artists over others, since there's no way I could fit them all in without having them look tiny. So instead I used the playbill that was promote the show. I made some changes, including squishing the entire thing horizontally to make it fit into a square space. I also redid the names of the artists, since there were about four of them that joined in late and so didn't get mentioned. But there's all mentioned here.

Rosanne Cash - The Walking Wounded - Non-Album Tracks (2017-2018)

This is another Rosanne Cash stray tracks album, and the last one! With this album, I pretty much catch up with her career in terms of non-album tracks, because I haven't found much in the way of stray tracks from 2019 or early 2020. I imagine there will be another album of those sorts of songs eventually, but probably not for another year or two.

Eight of the 13 songs here were officially released. Three of them are bonus tracks to the "She Remembers Everything" studio album. Most of the rest are from various artists compilation albums. The first song, "Thank You," appears to be an original that's from an extremely rare charity project for a local school, and was only available as an Internet download.

As for the five officially unreleased songs, all from concert bootlegs, I must admit that their sound quality isn't that great, considering that this album is from a recent year, and bootleg recordings tend to sound better with more advanced recording technology. This is probably due to the fact that these are generally songs she only played in concert once, or a few times at most, so we're lucky to have any recordings at all. But while the sound quality for these aren't as good as the studio tracks, I did deem them good enough to include.

Although I'm all out of stray tracks albums from Cash, I do have some other albums from her I plan to post, mostly some concert bootlegs.

This album is 46 minutes long.

Rosanne Cash - The Parting Glass - Non-Album Tracks (2014-2017)

Here's the next in my series of Rosanne Cash stray tracks albums. Sadly, I'm catching up to the current day, so this will be just one more after this (at least for a good while). It's up to her usual high standards.

The vast majority of the songs here come from official sources, so their sound quality is excellent. It's the usual mix of bonus tracks, various artists compilations, and the like. Three songs are unreleased and come from concert bootlegs. Of those, the sound for "Things We Said Today" is a bit rougher than the rest.

Most of the songs are cover versions, but a few are originals. For instance, the first two were written by her. "April 5th" was written by her, Elvis Costello, and Kris Kristofferson.

01 Two Girls (Rosanne Cash)
02 Your Southern Heart (Rosanne Cash)

Rosanne Cash - Land of Dreams - Non-Album Tracks (2012-2013)

In my opinion, Rosanne Cash can pretty much do no wrong. Anything she sings, I like. So here's another album of her stray tracks. This one just covers the years 2012 and 2013.

There's a fairly wide variety of songs here, but they're all tied together by Cash's voice. I think a few of the songs are originals. For instance, "Land of Dreams," a song she was commissioned to write and sing by the US government for a commercial to promote tourism to the US, believe it or not. But most of the songs are covers, including "Biloxi," my favorite Jesse Winchester song, and two songs made famous by Woody Guthrie ("I Ain't Got No Home" and "Pretty Boy Floyd").

All of the songs are officially released this time around, though they come from all sorts of different sources. One song, "Jim and George," which I think is another original, even comes from an extremely hard to find Internet-only download for a local charity. But the bottom line is that all the songs have great sound quality.

For the cover art, I found a publicity photo of Cash from 2012. She was standing against a white wall, which I thought was boring, so I added a more interesting background.

Rosanne Cash - Price of the Fire - Non-Album Tracks (2008-2011)

Hopefully by now you'll have noticed from my previous Rosanne Cash posts that she's got a lot of non-album material that's very good. So if you like the other stray tracks albums I've posted from her, you should like this one. It's more of the same quality music.

The songs come from bonus tracks, cuts on various artists compilations, duets on other people's albums, and the like. Four of the songs are officially unreleased, and all of those come from concert bootlegs. Happily, the sound is very good for those.

Cash has never been a very prolific songwriter, and usually these stray tracks compilations of hers are filled with covers. That's the case here too. About half of the songs are well-known classics, including versions of tunes from the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and her father Johnny Cash. But, as usual, she makes them all her own.

This album is 48 minutes long.

01 Wildwood Flower (Charlie Haden Family & Rosanne Cash)
02 Price of the Fire (Rosanne Cash)
03 And Your Bird Can Sing (Rosanne Cash)
04 My Love Is like a Red, Red Rose (Rosanne Cash)
05 Satisfied Mind (Rosanne Cash with Neko Case)
06 Sweet Memories (Rosanne Cash with Chris Thile)
07 Ode to Billy Joe (Rosanne Cash)
08 Secret Life of Roses (Rosanne Cash)
09 God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (Rosanne Cash)
10 Better Days (Rosanne Cash)
11 Got You Covered (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings with Rosanne Cash)
12 Pickin' Time (Rosanne Cash)
13 You Ain't Goin' Nowhere (Rosanne Cash)

I wasn't able to find any really good photos of Cash from 2008 to 2011. But I found a nice one from 2012, so I used that.

Rosanne Cash - The Winding Stream - Non-Album Tracks (2004-2007)

Here's another stray tracks album for Rosanne Cash, this time for the years 2004 to 2007.

I don't have much to say except that Cash is fantastic and underrated, as usual. This is very similar to the Lucinda Williams stray tracks album I just posted in that the vast majority of the songs are from various artists compilations or duet appearances on other people's albums.

Only two of the songs are officially unreleased. One - a cover of her father Johnny Cash's "Big River" - is from a televised BBC performance, so the sound quality is very good. The other - a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Who Will Stop the Rain" - is from a concert bootleg. I don't believe it's from a soundboard, and the sound quality is a little below the others. But it still sounds fine enough to be included.

Cash put out a very good album of original material during this time, 2006's "Black Cadillac." However, I believe all or nearly all the songs here aren't written by her.

01 How to Be Strong (Rosanne Cash)
02 Fiona's Song (Rosanne Cash & Black 47)
03 The Winding Stream (Rosanne Cash)
04 Who'll Stop the Rain (Rosanne Cash)
05 Loving Him Was Easier [Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again] (Rosanne Cash)
07 Forty Shades of Green (Rosanne Cash with Paul Brady)
08 Big River (Rosanne Cash)
09 I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love with You (Holmes Brothers & Rosanne Cash)
10 Wings of Angels (Rosanne Cash)
11 The Unfaithful Servant (Rosanne Cash)

Rosanne Cash - My Secret Life - Non-Album Tracks (1997-2003)

From the start of the 1990s onward, Rosanne Cash's albums have generally been made up of original songs, often with a unifying theme and/or sound. But she's also done a lot of songs which wound up as stray tracks. Most of these are covers.

This album is a case in point. Nearly all the songs here are covers. They are in a wide variety of styles, from different genres, including songs by the Beatles ("Things We Said Today") and Bob Dylan ("License to Kill"), as well as her father Johnny Cash ("I Still Miss Someone"). But they're all united by Cash's excellent vocals and production values.

I think the only song she wrote here is "Seven Year Ache," which was a big hit for her in the early 1980s. I've included it here because it's a very different version, done with Golden Smog.

This album is 41 minutes long.

01 Things We Said Today (Rosanne Cash)
02 Save the Country (Rosanne Cash)
03 My Secret Life (Rosanne Cash & Randy Scruggs)
04 Who's Dreaming Who (Jules Shear & Rosanne Cash)
05 D-I-V-O-R-C-E (Rosanne Cash)
06 Seven Year Ache (Golden Smog & Rosanne Cash)
07 Hometown Blues (Rosanne Cash)
08 Fair and Tender Ladies (Rosanne Cash)
09 I Still Miss Someone (Rosanne Cash)
10 The Lily of the West (Rosanne Cash & the Chieftans)
11 License to Kill (Rosanne Cash)

Rosanne Cash - I Count the Tears - Non-Album Tracks (1992-1996)

I continue to maintain that Rosanne Cash is awesome, and very underappreciated. She was the big star she deserved to be all through the 1980s, only to see her popularity plummet due to her no longer fitting the strict limits of country music radio stations. This comes not long after the start of her "post-country" phase of her career, though there's still some country influence on some songs.

Out of the first nine songs, the vast majority are covers. I particularly enjoy her version of "I Count the Tears," which is why I made it the album title. All but one of those nine songs are officially released, usually from various artists compilations, though two of them come from one of her great hits albums.

The remaining six songs are a bit different. In 1996, Cash released the album "10 Song Demo." It was 11 (not 10!) songs done with just her guitar and an acoustic guitar. Normally, I'd be all over that like white on rice. If you've been following this blog at all, you've probably noticed that I love "unplugged"-type recordings. But in this case, something seems a bit off to me. Perhaps her performances lack a little passion or energy. Whatever it is, I prefer some of her songs when she performed them for various in-person radio station appearances, even though they're done in the exact same way, just her voice and an acoustic guitar.

So five of the last six songs are versions of her "10 Song Demo" songs. One song in there, "Crescent City," is from one of those radio station appearances, but it's a cover of a Lucinda Williams tune.

If you don't want the duplication of the songs from her 1996 album, remove those and you still have a solid 33 minute long album.

01 Carrie (Rosanne Cash)
02 Wouldn't It Be Loverly (Rosanne Cash)
03 I Count the Tears (Rosanne Cash)
04 Our Little Angel (Rosanne Cash)
05 I'm Only Sleeping (Rosanne Cash)
06 River (Rosanne Cash)
07 Couldn't Do Nothin' Right (Rosanne Cash)
08 I'll Fly Away (Rosanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett & Kris Kristofferson)
09 I Walk the Line (Rosanne Cash)
10 Bells and Roses (Rosanne Cash)
11 Child of Steel (Rosanne Cash)
12 Crescent City (Rosanne Cash)
13 If I Were a Man (Rosanne Cash)
14 List of Burdens (Rosanne Cash)
15 The Summer I Read Collette (Rosanne Cash)

For the album cover, I wanted a photo of Cash that showed off what a beautiful woman she is. But I couldn't find any really good photos that looked like they were from the early 1990s. So I decided to use the photo on the cover of her "Essential Rosanne Cash" album, since it was exactly the sort of photo I was looking for. For the framing and the text, I used the artwork from one of her 1993 singles. Many moths after first posting this album, I colorized the photo.

Rosanne Cash - What Kinda Girl - Non-Album Tracks (1979-1989)

I really like Rosanne Cash. I've said that before and I'll probably say it many times again. There's something about her singing voice that appeals to me, and I think she's an underrated songwriter.

Rosanne Cash grew up enveloped by music, because her father was none other than Johnny Cash. She was appearing at Johnny Cash concerts and even singing some on his albums at a young age. In 1981, after recording a couple of little known country albums, she hit it big with her original song "Seven Year Ache." It was a number one country hit in the US, and even a top 20 pop hit. For the rest of the 1980s she was a significant country star, with a total of 11 number one country hits. (Her record sales plummeted with her 1990 album "Interiors" and after, even though it was great music, because it didn't fit the country radio format.)

This album covers her time as a country star. Some of the songs here are country in style, but a lot of them are more rock and roll. She always had interests in many different kinds of music, and she was a Beatles fanatic from a young age (even heading a chapter of a Beatles fan club). This can be seen by two Beatles covers on this album. Perhaps, as her record company tried to position her as a country star, her less country efforts often wound up as non-album tracks.

Still, there's a lot of country here too, including a duet with Carl Perkins and two more duets with her dad, Johnny Cash. I'd especially like to point out the duet "Love Is a Gambler." I only came across this song recently, and I was shocked to find out it still is officially unreleased. I think it's a really fun song, and it could have been a big hit.

There are a lot of other really good songs here. Two, "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" and "It's Such a Small World," were number one country hits. Even if you're not much of a country fan, this is very accessible music. She even does a cover of a Motown song ("Come See about Me").

This album is 51 minutes long.

01 Not a Second Time (Rosanne Cash)
02 The Feeling (Rosanne Cash)
03 Come See about Me (Rosanne Cash)
04 I Don't Even Try (Rosanne Cash)
05 Nobody Sees Me like You Do (Rosanne Cash)
06 No Memories Hangin' Round (Johnny Cash & Rosanne Cash)
07 What Kinda Girl (Rosanne Cash)
08 Jackson (Carl Perkins & Rosanne Cash)
09 707 (Rosanne Cash)
10 You Ain't Woman Enough [To Take My Man] (Rosanne Cash & k. d. lang)
11 It's Such a Small World (Rosanne Cash & Rodney Crowell)
12 Love Is a Gambler (Johnny Cash & Rosanne Cash)
13 Black and White (Rosanne Cash)
14 I Don't Want to Spoil the Party (Rosanne Cash)
15 Look What Our Love Is Coming To (Rosanne Cash)
16 One Step Over the Line (Rosanne Cash, John Hiatt & the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band)
