Cliff Richard - BBC Sessions, Volume 3: 1966-1968

Here's the third album featuring Cliff Richard perform for the BBC.

This is as pure as it gets when it comes to BBC albums, because every song was done in a BBC studio. All of them come from "Top of the Pops" transcription discs, which means the sound quality is consistently excellent. All of them remain unreleased.

Unfortunately, the usual problem with BBC studio sessions from this time period pops up: BBC DJs talking over the music. That affected about half of the songs, the ones with "[Edit]" in their names. But I applied my usual technique of using the X-Minus audio editing program to wipe out the vocals while keeping the underlying music.

Richard continued his hit making ways through this time period. (Heck, for him, that's practically every time period!) Again, not all of his big hits (such as his Top Ten hits in Britain) are included here. But his biggest one is, "Congratulations," which was Number One in Britain and many other countries, but largely ignored in the US.

This album is 45 minutes long.

The cover photo was taken in 1966. I don't know any more than that.

  1. Absolutely great. Some of those recordings I never heard. I'm hoping for the radioconcerts of the 70s, too. Most of them I only got in mediocre quality. So here's fingers crossed for upgrades. Thanks a lot for your great work. You made an old man happy a lot of times. :-)

    1. Glad to make you happy. :) Unfortunately, the only full show from him I have in good enough quality to post is from 1979. Do you have something different?

    2. Let me dig a bit. These are from cassette days.

  3. Okay, I searched through lots of CDs and couldn't find the ones with the radioshows. But since I'm moving at the moment (only from one room to another) lots of CDs are stored in boxes. Wouldn't want to go through these just now. But I should be able to locate my old cassettes in the basement. To maybe avoid this I googled a lot this afternoon (never did it so thoroughly before). I came across a great site http://www.cliffrichardsongs.com/crseries/ . So I went through those (sadly the youtube-links don't work anymore) to recognize what I seemed to remember. Apart from the 79 and around 80 BBC-concerts I instantly remembered the 75-show with orchestra (which can be found on youtube in better quality than I ever had it. Never made an impression on me though). The one I'm really really keen to get in better quality is not a BBC-show but was broadcast by WDR Germany, I now think (deduced from the songs played). I did like it a lot. Great band-effort as far as I remember (though I can't remember any funny events between songs).
Here's the comment from that page:
    Gouden Zeezwaluw-Festival Concert

    Studio: Unknown
    Broadcaster: WDR
    Running Time: 60 minutes
This concert was performed as part of the Gouden Zeezwaluw-Festival (Golden Sea Swallow Festival) concert in a casino in Knokke, Belgium. This festival, much like the Eurovision Song Contest, was an entertainment contest put on each year in Belgium, although details are hazy and the festival may have only run during the 1970s. The festival featured artists from many different genres of which Cliff was an entrant with this concert. All or part of the festival was broadcast on TV at the time, only on Belgium TV, but it may have been and probably was broadcast much broader across Europe, including the BBC in the UK. Cliff's performance was broadcast in full at the time and was apparently broadcast completely live. The true title of this broadcast is a mystery as only the Cliff Richard performance is available for review and that only contains a title card announcing "Cliff Richard".
The concert was a fairly straighforward live concert performance by Cliff and his band, with some of the songs probably being geared toward the TV broadcast. As the audience was not a native-English speaking audience, Cliff did minimal speaking between songs and mainly kept his performance to singing only.

The audience were not in a stadium setting, but instead were seated at long rows of tables, as if in a dinner show. Many were dressed in suits and formal dresses. Between songs, many women came to the stage to present flowers to Cliff, which led to a few humorous moments, including a stolen kiss and a small child.

I think this should be the one I was hoping to get.
But as I could see on that page there's lots of interesting shows out there. Never cared much for visuals, but I guess the sound of most of them should be quite nice.
