Justin Currie, Chris Difford, & Boo Hewerdine - Songwriters' Circle, Bush Hall, London, Britain, 10-8-2010

Here's another episode of the excellent BBC TV show "Songwriters' Circle." I'm trying to post all the ones I have sooner rather than later. This one stars Justin Currie, Chris Difford, and Boo Hewerdine.

This is another episode I'm only posting due a musical friend named Peter. A while back, he sent me a bunch of episodes in high-quality video format. I converted this one to audio format and broke it into mp3s. So thank you, Peter.

Justin Currie is the main singer-songwriter in the band Del Amitri. Their biggest selling singles are "Nothing Ever Happens" and "Roll to Me." They were in existence from 1980 to 2002. So Currie was a solo artist at the time of this concert. But the band got back together in 2013, and they are still together as I write this in 2026.

Here's his Wikipedia entry:

Justin Currie - Wikipedia

Chris Difford is one of the two main singer-songwriters in the band Squeeze, along with Glenn Tilbrook. Other band members have come and gone, but those two have been constants. Tilbrook has done the vast majority of the singing, although there are exceptions. For instance, Difford was the lead singer on the song "Cool for Cats," which made it all the way to Number Two in the British singles chart in 1979. Although Difford has remained in Squeeze for over 50 years, and the band is still together as I write this, the band has had some extended breaks. During those times, Difford has had a low-key solo career. By the time of this concert, he had put out three solo albums.

Here's his Wikipedia entry:

Chris Difford - Wikipedia

Boo Hewerdine (whose first name is actually Mark) was the main singer and songwriter in the band the Bible. That band was most successful in the 1980s. But they reformed a couple of times since. They are still together as I write this. He also has a hand a long solo career, releasing over a dozen studio albums. Furthermore, he's written songs for others. For instance, Eddi Reader had a Top Forty hit in Britain with his song "Patience of Angels" (which he performed here).

Here's his Wikipedia entry:

Boo Hewerdine - Wikipedia

Other than that, there's not much else to say. This episode followed the same format of others for the show, with each musician taking turns performing songs, then getting together to sing the final song.

This album is 56 minutes long.

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 9: 2010-2018

Yesterday, after posting "BBC Sessions, Volume 10" by Squeeze, it was pointed out to me that I had never posted Volume 9. Oops! I thought for sure that I had, since I had it all ready to go. So here it is now.

I found a couple of BBC concerts Squeeze did during this time period. But to be honest, I was getting a little tired of posting concerts mostly consisting of their old hits. In my opinion, they were still writing good new songs during this time period, and I was more interested in hearing those. So the first seven tracks are from a BBC concert in Newcastle, Britain, in 2010. Tracks 10 to 13 are from the 2016 Glastonbury Festival. Tracks 14 and 15 are from the Biggest Weekend Festival in Perth, Britain, which was broadcast by the BBC, just like the Glastonbury Festival.

So that makes up most of the songs. But there are two others. "Please, Please Me," a cover of the Beatles song, is from a 2013 BBC radio special called "12 Hours to Please Me" that celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' debut album in Britain, "Please, Please Me."

"Cradle to the Grave" is from the Andrew Marr BBC TV show. What's particularly interesting is that the lyrics were changed near the end of the song, just for this version. Here's the new lyrics:

I grew up in social housing
Part of what made Britain great
There are some here who are hell-bent
On the destruction of the welfare state

This seems to be a deliberate snub of David Cameron, prime minister of Britain at the time, who actually was on stage during the performance, because he was another guest on the show! Indeed, as a leader of the right wing Tory party, Cameron took part in that party's destruction of the welfare state that has be steadily and gradually weakening Britain's economy. Kudos to Squeeze to have the balls to sing that right to Cameron's face. Cameron clapped and smiled at the end of the song, probably oblivious about the lyrics.

Everything on this album is unreleased. I used the MVSEP program to remove all the crowd noise, so the songs with cheering fit in with the ones without. There are a couple of lesser known older songs here. But most of the songs are from the band's two albums of new material during this time period, "Cradle to the Grave" in 2015 and "The Knowledge" in 2017.

This album is 47 minutes long.

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 10: Quay Sessions, Kelvingrove Bandstand, Glasgow, Britain, 8-1-2024

Here's a concert by the band Squeeze, from 2024.

It's pretty amazing to consider that this band was formed in 1974, which means they've been together off and on for fifty years. Frankly, this concert mostly consists of their hits, with only three relatively new songs sprinkled in. So there isn't a big need for me to post this. However, this has been unavailable on the Internet, as far as I could tell. But an anonymous musical friend taped it off the radio when it was broadcast, and sent it to me. So by posting it here, I believe I'm making it available for anyone for the first time. So thanks to that person for their help.

One can find the full set list of this concert here:

Squeeze Concert Setlist at Summer Nights at The Bandstand 2024 on August 1, 2024 | setlist.fm

That shows five songs were performed that didn't make it to the BBC broadcast, including the final encore, "Black Coffee in Bed."

I do have to say that although the band members are getting up there in age, you wouldn't be able to tell just from listening to it. They still sound very good.

This album is 53 minutes long.

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 8: 1993-1998

It's time for another Squeeze BBC album. This one, "Volume 8," is meant to be a collection of studio sessions.

In 1993 and 1994, Squeeze had at least three BBC studio sessions to promote their 1993 studio album "Some Fantastic Place." Most of their performances were later included in their archival album "The Complete BBC Sessions." However, unfortunately, they played some of the same songs multiple times, with barely any difference between the versions. So I've only included one version of each. I believe the songs they played multiple times were "Third Rail," "Some Fantastic Place," and "Tempted."

They went on to release the albums "Ridiculous" in 1995 and "Domino" in 1998. Then they broke up for an extended time. Their next studio album of original material wouldn't come out until 2015. So I wanted material from those albums, but it seems they didn't do any more BBC studio sessions in that time, at least none that I could find. However, they did perform a BBC concert in Cambridge, Britain, in 1998. I thought about posting the whole concert, but these concerts mostly consist of them playing their biggest hits, and I've posted a bunch of concerts like that already. So instead I just took the relatively new songs they played in that concert ("Domino," "Donkey Talk," "Memory Motel," and "To Be a Dad"), plus one older hit that wasn't played in concert that much, "Goodbye Girl," and added it to this album. Since there's a mix of studio and live material, I removed the cheering noises from the live cuts with the use of the UVR5 audio editing program.

So that's why I said up above that this volume is "meant to be a collection of studio sessions," since about half of it actually comes from a concert. But now it plays like all studio sessions.

Tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 have been officially released on the "Complete BBC Sessions" album. "It's Over" is from one of the exact same BBC sessions as some songs on that album, but it remained unreleased. The last five songs are from that 1998 BBC concert I mentioned above and are unreleased.

This album is 53 minutes long.

The cover photo only features Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, who basically became Squeeze by this time, since they co-wrote all the songs and were the only two consistent members. It's from a photo shoot in New York City in 1996.

Difford & Tilbrook (Squeeze) - BBC In Concert, Friars Club, Aylesbury, Britain, 9-22-1984

First off, understand this is a BBC concert by the British band Squeeze in all but name. The songwriting duo Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook write all the songs in their band Squeeze. Also, Tilbrook is the main lead vocalist and lead guitarist, and Difford occasionally sings lead vocals and plays guitar. Here is the only BBC concert they during a short time when Squeeze had officially broken up.

Squeeze put out their first album in 1977, and were increasingly popular until they broke up in late 1982. Difford and Tilbrook stayed together as a duo, and released an album, cleverly titled "Difford and Tilbrook," in 1984. In 1985, Squeeze reformed. But by 1993, Difford and Tilbrook were the only original members remaining. After that, it was basically just those two with other band members coming and going. At times, they've simply played as a duo with the Squeeze name. So, by later standards, this is definitely Squeeze.

The sole Difford and Tilbrook solo album was a good one, but it didn't do very well commercially, probably because it didn't have a killer single on it, and it wasn't released under the Squeeze name. This concert was meant to support that album, and most of the songs are from it, plus one cover version, Band of Gold," and three Squeeze songs to end the concert. I understand there were two more Squeeze songs on some versions of the BBC recording, "Tempted" and "Is This Love." But I haven't been able to find them. Let me know if you have them.

When I first posted this in January 2025, the sound quality had issues. But in January 2026, I found a different version, recently posted by the "Voodoo Wagon" music blog. Then, musical friend Progsprog saw that posted and sent me an even better version that had four extra songs. So I updated the entire thing. It now sounds just as good you'd expect for a BBC radio broadcast.

Everything here is officially unreleased.

This album is an hour and four minutes long.

01 Man for All Seasons (Difford & Tilbrook)
02 Picking Up the Pieces (Difford & Tilbrook)
03 Tempted (Difford & Tilbrook)
04 talk (Difford & Tilbrook)

I couldn't find many good photos of Difford and Tilbrook while they were a duo in 1984. However, I got lucky and found a concert poster for this exact concert. Even better, it nicely fit into a square shape if I cut out some unimportant text at the bottom, so that's what I did. I cleaned it up a bit in Photoshop.

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 7: In Concert, Manchester Apollo, Manchester, Britain, 9-20-1987

For a long time now, I've been occasionally posting albums of the band Squeeze performing for the BBC. It's been quite a few months since I posted the last one, but I recently remembered it's time to post another one, so here you go.

In 1987, Squeeze had a peak of popularity, thanks mainly to their song "Hourglass," which was their first hit in a few years. That came from their album "Babylon and On," released just five days prior to this concert.

Not surprisingly, the band played a few songs from that album, plus some of their earlier hits. They also did the cover song "Such a Night," which they never officially released in any form.

This concert is completely unreleased, as far as I know. The sound quality is pretty good, but not outstanding.

This album is 59 minutes long.

If the cover photo looks like the band is playing inside a giant mouth, that's because the band is playing inside a giant mouth! For instance, that's a row of teeth at the bottom. I put this album together ages ago, so I've long since forgotten why they were playing inside a giant mouth. I only know this happened during a TV show appearance in 1987.

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 6: In Concert, Hammersmith Odeon, London, Britain, 10-14-1985

For much of the 1980s, it seemed like the British band Squeeze performed a BBC concert every time they released another studio album, and here's another example of that.

In 1982, Squeeze broke up, when they arguably were at their peak of commercial and critical success. But they only stayed apart for three years. They reunited for a benefit concert, decided they liked being together, and recorded a studio album that year, "Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti." This concert was from part of a tour to support that album.

The sound quality here was a bit below par for the BBC, even though it's an unreleased bootleg. I boosted the lead vocals on all the songs, and especially on the banter between songs (using the audio editing program UVR5), and I think it sounds very good now.

There was a more significant problem with the song "Is That Love," where there was a sonic flaw in one part of the songs. But I was able to patch that with another bit from elsewhere in the song. That's why that one has "[Edit]" in the title.

This album is 59 minutes long.

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 5: 1982-1992

I'm gradually moving forward chronologically with BBC albums by the British band Squeeze. The first one was a collection of BBC studio sessions, then the next three were BBC concerts. Now, with this fifth album in the series, it's back to another collection of BBC studio sessions.

It seems Squeeze didn't do studio sessions for the BBC very often during this era, because this album deals with a ten-year time period. The first four tracks are from a 1982 session, then there's a big time jump to a 1989 session for the next four tracks. That's followed by a single song from 1990, "Another Nail in My Heart," which comes from an appearance on a BBC TV show. Finally, the last four songs are from a 1992 session.

Virtually all the songs here are released, from the album "The Complete BBC Sessions." The sole exception is that sole song from 1990, "Another Nail in My Heart," which is unreleased.

Oddly, the band seemed to avoid playing hits for the 1982 and 1989 sessions. But the 1992 session was composed entirely of older hits, done in acoustic styles.

This album is 47 minutes long.

Jamaica World Music Festival, Montego Bay, Jamaica, 11-27-1982, Part 4: Squeeze

The second act on the third day of the 1982 Jamaica World Music Festival was the British band Squeeze.

Probably the most noteworthy aspect of this performance is that it was the very last concert given by the original version of Squeeze. The band had been formed back in 1974, and had put out albums from 1977 to 1982. But their 1982 album "Sweets from a Stranger" was not well received critically or commercially, although I personally think it's a solid album. That, on top of other problems led to the break-up.

Lead singer Glenn Tilbrook later commented, "The band was not in a happy place on the year from 'East Side Story' to 'Sweets from a Stranger.' There were some great songs on 'Sweets from a Stranger,' but the band itself did not feel great; there was dark cloud above us. It was just hard work being on the road then, and it was an odd time. Really, when you're having that sort of success, no manager is going to say, 'You need to stop for a while.' And no one did, so we had to."

As it so happened, the band reunited for a one-off charity concert in 1985, and had such a good time that they decided to stay together. The band continued all the way until 1999, and there have been more reunions since then. But I think they lost a lot of career momentum with their original break-up.

Anyway, there's no sign that this was a final concert to my ears. They didn't give any good-bye announcement to the crowd. Most importantly, it was a good performance, and they seemed to be having fun. They also played some interesting covers that never appeared on any of their studio albums: "Tracks of My Tears," "I Heard It through the Grapevine," and "Time Is Tight."

This album is 52 minutes long.

I couldn't find any good photos of the band from the festival. I had trouble finding any good photos of the band in concert from that year at all. My search was made harder because I wanted a photo of the band at night, since their set definitely took place at night. I ultimately used just a photo of lead singer Glenn Tilbrook, taken some time in 1981.

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 4: In Concert, Regal Theatre, Hitchins, Britain, 10-30-1982

The British band Squeeze performed for the BBC a lot in the early 1980s. I've already posted BBC concerts they did from 1980 and 1981, and here's one from 1982. In my opinion, each concert got better than the last, due to the band having even more classic songs to play.

This unreleased concert already sounded pretty good, but I tweaked it a little to make it sound even better. The main change I did was boost the lead vocals relative to the instruments, since they were rather low.

One song needed a big edit, the last one, "Tempted." The song faded out halfway through. I'm guessing that the BBC had allotted a certain amount of time for the band to perform, and when that time went over, they ended the broadcast. So I found a different version of the song performed in the same year and patched it in to finish it off. That's why that song has "[Edit]" in the title.

It seems to me that the band was trying their best to make use of a limited time slot, because they wasted very little time between songs. There are only a few comments here and there. And they often went right into the next song before giving the audience a decent amount of time to clap. It makes for a fast-paced show, though a short one.

The band broke up by the end of 1982, but they reunited in 1985. That's when the next album in this series will take place.

This album is 47 minutes long.

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 3: Rock Hour, Oxford Polytechnic, Oxford, Britain, 5-15-1981

This is the third Squeeze BBC album. It's another concert, which was televised at the time. All the performances from it are officially unreleased.

To be honest, I wasn't going to post this at first. It turns out that the date for this is the exact same date Squeeze released their great album "East Side Story." However, there are only three songs here from that album: "Is That Love," "Heaven," and "Messed Around." Most of the best songs weren't included, such as their big hit "Tempted." I'm guessing that's because the band mostly wanted to play songs the audience was familiar with. "Is That Love" had been released as a single a couple of weeks prior to the release of the album, and it was a hit, so at least they might have known that one.

Volume 4 in this series is a 1982 concert with more of the "East Side Story" songs, so I figure this one isn't that necessary. That's why I wasn't going to post it. However, there was an annoying hum all through the concert and I was able to get rid of it using the Izotope 10 audio editing program. So I figured I'll post this anyway because it sounds much better than previous versions found on the Internet.

Squeeze had a limited time slow for the TV broadcast of this concert. So it seems they were careful to make the most of their time, saying only a few words at most before each song, and usually going straight into the next song.

This album is 52 minutes long.

01 talk (Squeeze)

I couldn't find any good photos of the band in concert in 1981. So I made one by taking a screenshot of the official video for their song "Tempted."

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: In Concert, Hammersmith Odeon, London, Britain, 3-9-1980

I've already posted an album of Squeeze BBC sessions in the late 1970s. There are a bunch of Squeeze BBC albums to come. But from this point on, most of them are BBC concerts, like this one.

In 1979, Squeeze had a lot of success with their second album, "Cool for Cats," especially in Britain. That had two songs that reached Number Two in the British charts: "Cool for Cats" and "Up the Junction." They continued their success in 1980 with the album "Argybargy." That had the hits "Another Nail from My Heart" and "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)." "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)" didn't actually do too well in the charts at the time, not quite reaching the Top Forty in Britain, but it became one of their best known songs anyway.

So by the time of this concert, they had lots of well known songs to play, and they're all here. This concert has been officially released on the deluxe edition of "Argybargy," so the sound quality is excellent.

This album is 53 minutes long.

I couldn't find any good photos of Squeeze in concert in 1980. However, I found a nice one of lead guitarist Glenn Tilbrook looking like a guitar hero in 1979. I don't know the details beyond that, however.

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: 1977-1979

I've been posting albums at this blog for over five years now, and there still are tons of great musical artists that I haven't posted anything for yet, or only a little bit. The British band Squeeze is a case in point. I like them a lot, and I have many albums to post, but so far all I've posted are a couple albums from lead singer Glenn Tilbrook's solo career. So let me start to rectify that by posting a series of BBC albums.

Squeeze's first release was an EP in 1977, and then the full-length album "Squeeze" in 1978. This was a strange start for the band, because both the EP and the album were produced by John Cale, a former member of the band the Velvet Underground, and he pushed the band into a musical style they weren't comfortable with. That's often the case here, since many of the songs are from that first EP and first album.

The first four songs are from a BBC studio session in 1977. The session was hosted by famous BBC DJ John Peel. He was a key early supporter when they started out, but he lost interest after they got famous (which was part of a common pattern for him).

The next two songs, tracks five and six, are from a short BBC concert in early 1978. I've only included two songs because the sound quality of that concert is merely good, not excellent, and most of the songs were done at other BBC sessions. But I had to at least include "Take Me, I'm Yours," since it's their first hit and most popular song from this time period.

The next four songs, tracks seven through 10, are from another John Peel BBC studio session in 1978.

Finally, the last two songs are from an appearance on the BBC TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test" in 1979. Both of those songs came out on the band's second album, "Cool for Cats." There are more key songs from that album, but sadly it seems they didn't make any other BBC appearances in 1979.

All the John Peel sessions songs, tracks one through four and seven through 10, have been released on the official album "The Complete BBC Sessions." But the others are still unreleased.

This album is 39 minutes long.

Glenn Tilbrook - Quarantine Songs (2020)

Just as a reminder, Glenn Tilbrook is the lead singer of Squeeze, and has cowritten virtually all of their songs. As I write this, Squeeze is still together, though they have a long history of breaking up, then getting back together. Instead of taking the more common approach of making videos of acoustic performances during the coronavirus lockdown, he's put out one new song a week using a full band. Apparently it was all done remotely with musical associates (none of whom seem to have been other Squeeze members).

Tilbrook started posting videos of these songs in mid-April 2020. Three weeks ago (late July), he announced that week's song would be the last one of the series. Since then there hasn't been anything new from him, so I figure it's okay to post this and consider it the complete collection. As you'll see below, all of the performances are covers. It's a pretty strange bunch of songs, even though most are famous and have a poppy sound. I suspect the only commonality is that they were songs Tilbrook liked and had fun performing. He could put them out for free on the Internet without having to worry about sales figures or critical reviews or the like.

All the songs are presented in the order he posted them on-line. This matters, because he claims that most of the songs have a musical clue to what the next song in the series would be. For instance, the guitar solo in the first song "Hackensack" makes a reference to the melody in the second song, "Jerusalem." And since I'm mentioning "Jerusalem," note that that's an instrumental backing track from the 1910s that backs a poem written by William Blake from the 1800s. He was inspired to play it after hearing it in an obscure movie from the 1930s!

The songs add up to 49 minutes, which is a pretty ideal length for an album.

Here's a list of the original performers for each song:

01 Hackensack - Fountains of Wayne
02 Jerusalem [Instrumental] - Sir Hubert Perry
03 My Boy Lollipop - Millie Small
04 Jesus Was a Cross Maker - Judee Sill
05 I Must Be in a Good Place Now - Bobby Charles
06 Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell
07 Everyday People - Sly & the Family Stone
08 I Do Not Miss You - Steve Nieve

10 Dolly My Love - Moments
11 Don't You Want Me - Human League
12 Cruel - Millions
13 BHS - Sleaford Mods
14 Lovely Day - Bill Withers
15 Wonderful - Beach Boys

Glenn Tilbrook - Long Island Brewing Company, Jericho, NY, 9-23-1997

So far, I haven't posted any music by Squeeze. But I definitely plan to, because I like them a lot, especially their work from their first decade or so. This is a solo acoustic concert by Glenn Tilbrook, the main singer and one of the two main songwriters for Squeeze. So if you like that band, you're bound to like this.

But this is a different than the usual Squeeze music, for two reasons. First, the solo acoustic format means the music is presented very different when Squeeze hits are being played. But also, in 1997 when this concert took place, Squeeze was mostly dissolving - they would put out an album in 1998, and then not put out another one of new material for nearly 20 years. Yet Tilbrook hadn't really gotten his solo career started either - his first solo about wouldn't be released until 2001. As a result, he played a lot of cover songs.

I count eight covers, and they're an interesting bunch. He did songs by Blur ("End of the Century"), Oasis ("Wonderwall"), the Beatles ("Tell Me Why" and "Ticket to Ride"), the Monkees ("Daydream Believer"), and Elvis Costello "Alison"), as well as the 1950s hit "Sea Cruise." So that adds a lot of fun variety, instead of it being all Squeeze songs.

In terms of sound quality, this is excellent. It's a pristine soundboard. At the time, Tilbrook wasn't well known on his own (and he never really has drawn huge crowds as a solo aritst), so this took place at an intimate club, with lots of interaction with the crowd.

I made one rather odd but significant edit. For the song "In Quintessence," he played a guitar solo in the middle of the song. But he screwed it up, and apologized for his mistake at the end of the song. Then, once the applause ended, he played the solo he'd wanted to play. That's kind of strange, having a solo wtthout a song around it. Since the solo in the song was flubbed, I patched in the good one he played after the song ended. From your point of view as a listener, you should just hear a normal song with a perfectly good solo in it.

For the cover art, I wanted to find a good photo of Tilbrook in concert in 1997, but i couldn't find any. However, I found one of him in concert in 1996, so I used that. He was standing next to Chris Difford of Squeeze, but I cropped that out. And by the way, he apparently was standing in front of some red wall. I didn't make any changes to the pic.
