Cliff Richard - BBC Sessions, Volume 9: In Concert, Wembley Arena, London, Britain, 11-28-1992

Man, I never would have imagined that I wound post nine Cliff Richard BBC albums. But here we are, with another BBC concert. To be honest, there are still other BBC concerts out there I haven't posted, mostly from way late in his career. But I'm posting this because it's another album I got recently from Progsprog, and as far as I can tell, it's currently publicly unavailable. So this should put it back in circulation.

The previous BBC concert by Richard that I've posted is from 1988. Between 1988 and 1992, he continued to have more hit singles in Britain. Surprisingly, the biggest one, "Saviour's Day," which reached Number One in Britain in 1989, wasn't included here. However, his most recent studio album in 1992 was simply called "The Album." It contained two Top Ten hits, "I Still Believe in You" and "Peace in Our Time," and both of those are here.

Other than that, this is a lively collection of his most popular songs, going back to the 1950s. Thanks again to Progsprog for making this available, because the sound quality is excellent.

This album is 57 minutes long.

Olivia Newton-John - Hollywood Nights (1980)

Here's a really interesting, entirely unreleased album by Olivia Newton-John. It's an American TV special she did in 1980 called "Hollywood Nights." It features some songs she never recorded on any album, as well as duets with an impressive bunch of guest stars: Cliff Richard, Elton John, Andy Gibb, Gene Kelly, Tina Turner, Peaches (of Peaches and Herb), Toni Tennille (of Captain and Tennille) & Karen Carpenter.

By 1980, Newton-John had become a worldwide superstar, mainly thanks due to her starring role in the 1978 movie "Grease." In 1980, she was due to have her second big starring movie role, in the movie "Xanadu." That movie would get released in August 1980, and it would turn out to be a flop, although the soundtrack by Newton-John and E.L.O. would be a big hit. This hour-long TV special was broadcast in April 1980, and seems to have served as kind of a warm-up for the movie. It featured one song that would be in the movie, "Suddenly," and also featured Newton-John duetting with Gene Kelly, as would happen in the movie, but with a different song. (Kelly, a star from a much earlier era, was 68 years old at the time.) They sang the classic song "Makin' Whoopee," but with totally different lyrics, an update called "Makin' Movies," which was all about the movie business.

But while there were those teasers about the upcoming movie, mostly the special was just a showcase for Newton-John's talent, and especially to sing duets with many musicians she liked. Probably the highlight is a version of Elton John's classic song "Candle in the Wind," mostly sung by Newton-John but with Elton playing piano and singing some towards the end. He also got to promote his new single at the time, "Little Jeannie," the only song here without Newton-John's involvement.

There were some even more unexpected songs. She started the show with a cover of "Hollywood Nights" by Bob Seger, which is a song she otherwise never performed or recorded. She also did "Heartache Tonight" by the Eagles probably for the only time ever, with Tina Turner, Peaches, Toni Tennille and Karen Carpenter all taking lead vocals at various point as well. And "Oh Boy" by Buddy Holly was another song she otherwise never did, done here with Cliff Richard, Elton John and Andy Gibb also taking turns with the lead vocals.

I cut out about five minutes from the special. That was all non-musical stuff, mostly jokey segments with actors Dick Clark and/or Ted Knight. Trust me, that's not the kind of thing with high replay value. But if you feel you're missing out, you can find the entire video of this special on YouTube.

The special was a mixture of songs performed in front of an audience and songs done earlier in some studio without any audience. I have no idea when or where each part of it was recorded, only that it was broadcast in April 1980. I found out that tidbit from this nice fan website, which includes lots of screenshots from the special, as well as a link to the YouTube video of the whole thing:

Hollywood Nights Special

This special is unreleased and it is very likely to stay that way, due to the difficulty of getting the legal rights to all the guest performances. But now, here, at least it's available as an audio album for the first time.

This album is 42 minutes long

I made the cover art out of two screenshots from this TV special. I took one screenshot for the words at the top, which were apparently neon signs in front of the building. But at the point in time, Newton-John was relatively small in the overall image, standing on the street. So I went to slightly earlier in the same scene, when her head took up most of the screen, and imposed that on top, using Photoshop.

Olivia Newton-John - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: 1974-1981

Here's the second album of singer Olivia Newton-John performing for the BBC. Like the first one, it consists of various sessions, although this one happens to be entirely made of TV show appearances, not radio shows.

Newton-John's fame grew bigger and bigger as the 1970s went on. However, most of the music here comes before 1978, when she became a superstar due to her leading role in the hit movie "Grease."

The first ten songs all come from 1974. It seems she spent most of the year in Britain, staying there long enough to have her own short-lived BBC TV show called "Moods of Love." It only consisted of four half-hour episodes, but each one was chockablock with songs she sang that she never put on record. Unfortunately, it seems the BBC wiped the recordings (as they so often did back then). Only a few songs from it could still be found on YouTube, and I couldn't use all of those due to sound quality issues. Tracks 5, 6, and 7 here come from her show, which include duets with Cliff Richard and Neil Sedaka.

Here's a link to a fan's webpage about the show, if you want to get frustrated seeing the names of all the song performances that apparently got lost:

Moods Of Love - UK show

The first two songs are from a show called "Clunk Click." The next two are from "Presenting Nana Mouskouri." One of those, "Sing," features a duet of Newton-John with Mouskouri. Furthermore, she made some appearances on Cliff Richard's BBC TV show that year, "It's Cliff Richard." Those are tracks 8 through 10, and include two more duets with Richard.

Tracks 11 and 12 are from a 1977 appearance on "The Val Doonican Show." If You Love Me (Let Me Know)" was a hit for Newton-John with her being the only one singing lead. But she did a duet version of it with Val Doonican here. Track 13 is from another 1977 show. Track 14 is from the "Top of the Pops" TV show (not to be confused with the radio show of the same name). Normally, performances on this show were lip-synced. However, in this case, Newton-John sang live lead vocals over a prerecorded backing track, so I included it.

The last song is "Physical" from 1981. By this time, she was such a big star that she probably didn't feel the need to appear on BBC TV or radio much anymore. So we don't get versions of many of her big hits from the late 1970s and 1980s. But luckily we do get this one, which was the biggest hit of her career, thanks to an appearance on the TV show "Stars."

Note that some of the songs here were never recorded for any of her albums or singles, especially most of the duets.

There is one more BBC album coming from her, a 1977 concert. It comes third since this one chronologically starts earlier.

There are two bonus tracks. There's nothing wrong with them, except there already are other versions of those songs. ("Sam" from this volume and "Take Me Home, Country Roads" from Volume 1.)

This album is 46 minutes long.

01 Someday (Olivia Newton-John)
02 Hands Across the Sea (Olivia Newton-John)
03 Amoureuse (Olivia Newton-John)

Olivia Newton-John - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: 1971-1974

As I've mentioned previously, I have a musical associate who has kindly passed on to me some recordings from the BBC radio show "Top of the Pops" that are otherwise extremely rare and often unbootlegged until now. He gave me some of those featuring Australian singer Olivia Newton-John from the early 1970s. So I tried to see if I could find enough material to make an entire BBC album out of it. To my surprise, I found enough for three volumes. Here's the first one.

I doubt Olivia Newton-John needs much in the way of an introduction, considering she's one of the best selling singers of all time, with over 100 million records sold. She first became a star in Britain in 1971 with the songs "If Not for You" and "Banks of the Ohio" both reaching the Top Ten there. So it's not surprising that's when she first starting performing for the BBC. The ultra-rare "Top of the Pops" I previously mentioned are tracks 1 through 5, plus 8 and 13. Some other songs appeared on that radio show, but I checked and they were the same as the record versions. Just playing the record versions became the general trend on that show around 1973, so there are no other performances from her after that year.

Note that four of these seven had BBC DJ Brian Matthew talking over the music at times. So I did my usual thing and used the UVR5 audio editing program to get rid of the talking. That's why four songs have "[Edit]" in their titles.

Those seven songs by themselves wouldn't be enough to make up an album. So I went digging to see what else I could come up with. I got lucky and found a fan site called "Only Olivia." Here's the URL:

https://www.onlyolivia.com/

It has information of probably every BBC TV show appearance she did, so I was easily able to find most of those on YouTube. That's why I found enough for two albums made up of radio and TV sessions, plus another one consisting of a concert. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is from the Harry Secombe Show in 1972. "Close to You" is from a BBC TV movie called "The Case." Tracks 9 through 12 are from another BBC TV movie, "The New Fangled Wandering Minstrel Show." That one co-starred Newton-John with singer Georgie Fame, so that includes two duets by them. Note that for some of these songs, including all the ones from the BBC TV movies, were never released in any form on record.

The last three songs are from another BBC TV show, "Clunk Click," in 1974. Like everything else on this album, these performances are officially unreleased. For most of the songs other than the Top of the Pops and TV movie ones, there was audience applause. I used the MVSEP audio editing program to get rid of most of that, so those songs would fit in with the ones without applause.

The bonus track, "It Must Be Love," is a duet with singer Labi Siffre of a hit song he wrote. Unfortunately, the sound quality isn't as good as the rest, so that's why that one is a bonus track. That comes from a short-lived BBC TV show hosted by Newton-John called "Moods of Love," in 1974. There will be more about that show in the next volume.

This album is 44 minutes long, not including the bonus track.

01 Don't Move Away (Olivia Newton-John & Cliff Richard)
02 Help Me Make It through the Night [Edit] (Olivia Newton-John)

05 What Is Life [Edit] (Olivia Newton-John)

Knebworth Festival, Knebworth House, Knebworth, Britain, 6-30-1990, Part 3: Cliff Richard & the Shadows

The third act at the 1990 Knebworth Festival was Cliff Richard and the Shadows. I doubt Richard would have been invited to such a major festival in the U.S., where he was only a minor star, but he was one of the biggest stars in Britain.

Richard has an an on again and off again relationship with the Shadows. They were his backing band when he first found fame in the late 1950s. The Shadows were no ordinary backing band, because they went on to have many hits of their own, all instrumentals, including five Number One songs in Britain. The Shadows first broke up in the late 1960s. But they reunited with Richard in 1978, 1984, and again in 1989 and 1990, which included this concert. They would reunite with him a few times after this as well, with the final reunion in 2010.

There's some wind rustling noise in this set, especially during the applause and banter. But it's pretty minor stuff and hardly affects the actual songs.

This album is 44 minutes long.

02 Move It (Cliff Richard & the Shadows)

Cliff Richard - BBC Sessions, Volume 8: In Concert, Bournemouth International Centre, Bournemouth, Britain, 11-16-1988

I'm not much of a Cliff Richard fan, but somehow I keep posting BBC albums from him. Here's the eighth one. Like the previous two, this is a concert broadcast by the BBC. Although I'm not much of a fan, I figure he's such a big star in Britain that a fair amount of people will want to hear this.

If you got just one Cliff Richard concert, this is probably the one to get. It's late enough in his career that it includes pretty much all of his big hits. But it's far back in time enough for him to still be in his vocal and physical prime.

This concert is totally unreleased, as far as I know. The sound quality is generally excellent. However, I boosted the vocals a lot for the banter between songs. Also, there was a flaw in the song "We Don't Talk Anymore." Luckily, it was in the middle of a chorus, not a verse. So I was able to patch it when a bit from another chorus. That's why that song has "[Edit]" in the title.

This album is an hour and 37 minutes long.

Cliff Richard - BBC Sessions, Volume 7: In Concert, Hammersmith Odeon, London, Britain, 12-5-1981

I thought I was all done with posting anything from Cliff Richard. But then I was sent some additional BBC material from a kind commenter at this blog. I have one more in this series to post after this, then possibly something else a bit different.

This concert took place in 1981, and it definitely sounds it. Richard certainly new how to keep up with the times and keep having hits. In the early 1980s new wave was all the rage, and a lot of the songs fit that sound. I wasn't familiar with most of this material before hearing this album, and I was surprised some of it was actually by him. There are some throwbacks to earlier eras, especially ballads, but most of it would have sounded current in 1981. Frankly, I like this kind of music better, with less schmaltzy stuff (other than those ballads I mentioned).

As you'd expect from the BBC, the sound quality is excellent. Thanks to Phil for the music. I don't think this concert has been available on the Internet until now, at least not anywhere I could find.

This album is 55 minutes long.

01 Son of Thunder (Cliff Richard)

Cliff Richard - BBC Sessions, Volume 6: In Concert, Hammersmith Odeon, London, Britain, 12-15-1979

Here's the sixth volume of Cliff Richard playing for the BBC. It's the first one in the series so far that's a concert.

This volume is very different from all the previous ones in this series. If you've been avoiding those due to Richard's square, mainstream reputation, you might want to reconsider. Richard had a knack for blowing with the musical winds of change. In the late 1970s, he went in more of a rocking and almost new wave direction, though still tempered by his usual poppy style. I just read some reviews of his 1979 studio album, and more than one person used the term "power pop" to describe it. In all honesty, when I heard the second song here, I had to stop and double check who I was listening to, because it didn't sound like what I was expecting from him.

Richard's seemingly constant stream of hits lessened some in the mid-1970s. But he had a big hit with "Devil Woman" in 1976, his first Top Ten hit in the US. Then he had another Top Ten hit in the US in 1979 with "We Don't Talk Anymore." That one made it all the way to Number One in Britain. So he was hitting a commercial peak at the time of this concert. (Naturally, he played both of those songs near the end of this concert.) His 1979 album "Rock 'n' Roll Juvenile" was also a hit in Britain, so he played a lot of songs from that album, including "Carrie," which was a Top Five hit in Britain.

But at the same time, Richard had a big backlog of hits to play, and he did lots of those too. However, as he pointed out at one point during the concert, he came up with new arrangements for many of them. For instance, the song "Do You Want to Dance" (a Richard hit in Britain in 1962) was changed so drastically that I almost didn't recognize it at first.

This album is an hour and 29 minutes long.

01 Move It (Cliff Richard)

Cliff Richard - BBC Sessions, Volume 5: 1971-1975

Here's another album of British singer Cliff Richard at the BBC. This is the last volume of him performing BBC studio sessions. There's more after this, but those are BBC concerts.

As with past volumes, everything here remains officially unreleased. All the songs come from "Top of the Pops" transcription discs, which means the sound quality is excellent. The music peters out in 1975 because that's around the time "Top of the Pops" switched from having artists perform in the studio to just playing their records. Actually, we're lucky to have the last two songs from 1975, since live in studio performances were rare for that radio show by that year. Thanks again to musical associate Marley for providing this material.

I like this volume better than the last one. That one had some sappy ballads with lots of strings. There are only one or two of those here. He plays more classics this time, like "Fire and Rain" and "Reason to Believe."

Five of the songs have "[Edit]" in their titles. That's due to the usual problem of BBC DJs talking over the music. As usual, I used the audio editing program X-Minus to fix it.

This album is 54 minutes long.

UPDATE: On May 15, 2025, I updated the mp3 download file. I added three songs I'd previously missed, "It's Only Me You've Left Behind," "Miss You Nights," and "Tomorrow Rising."

01 I [Who Have Nothing] (Cliff Richard)

Cliff Richard - BBC Sessions, Volume 4: 1969-1971

This is the fourth of six volumes of Cliff Richard at the BBC.

Richard continued to be popular during this time, with yet more hits in Britain. Personally, I'm not as keen on this volume as the previous ones. He played more middle of the road stuff, sometimes with strings, and less rock and roll. But if you're a fan of his music, you'll probably be into that anyway.

Everything here remains officially unreleased. Almost all the songs come from pristine "Top of the Pops" transcription discs. Thanks to musical associate Marley for helping me find these.

The two exceptions are the first song, a duet of "The Look of Love" and "Walk on By" with Cilla Black, and "The Lady Came from Baltimore." The first comes from Black's TV show "Cilla," and the second comes from a German TV show.

The songs here had the usual problem of BBC DJs talking over the music. As usual, I used the X-Minus audio editing program to remove the talking but keep the music. Those are the ones with "[Edit]" in their titles.

This album is 43 minutes long.

Cliff Richard - BBC Sessions, Volume 3: 1966-1968

Here's the third album featuring Cliff Richard perform for the BBC.

This is as pure as it gets when it comes to BBC albums, because every song was done in a BBC studio. All of them come from "Top of the Pops" transcription discs, which means the sound quality is consistently excellent. All of them remain unreleased.

Unfortunately, the usual problem with BBC studio sessions from this time period pops up: BBC DJs talking over the music. That affected about half of the songs, the ones with "[Edit]" in their names. But I applied my usual technique of using the X-Minus audio editing program to wipe out the vocals while keeping the underlying music.

Richard continued his hit making ways through this time period. (Heck, for him, that's practically every time period!) Again, not all of his big hits (such as his Top Ten hits in Britain) are included here. But his biggest one is, "Congratulations," which was Number One in Britain and many other countries, but largely ignored in the US.

This album is 45 minutes long.

01 Time Drags By (Cliff Richard)
02 In the Country (Cliff Richard)
03 Finders Keepers [Edit] (Cliff Richard)
04 Baby, It’s You [Edit] (Cliff Richard)
05 Move It (Cliff Richard)
06 Hang On to a Dream (Cliff Richard)
07 Shout (Cliff Richard)
08 The Day I Met Marie [Edit] (Cliff Richard)
09 All My Love (Cliff Richard)
10 The Girl Can’t Help It [Edit] (Cliff Richard)

Cliff Richard - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: 1961-1966

This is the second of six albums of Cliff Richard at the BBC that I plan to post.

This one was tricky to make because Richard was a big star in Britain all through this time period, with many hits, but it seems that there are very few BBC recordings. That's not surprising, since not many BBC recordings from 1964 or earlier have surprised, with a few exceptions, such as recordings by the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. The only ones here that are BBC studio sessions are tracks 9, and 13 through 17.

So I've added in some TV performances I found on YouTube. These help fill in the missing gaps somewhat, although there are many more hits from the time period not included here. Note that all the performances here are officially unreleased. I could have included others, but I wanted to keep the sound quality level high.

Richard was such a big star in 1961 that he hosted his own TV show, simply called "Cliff!" The first seven tracks are taken from that show. Some of the songs were never released by him in any form, such as "Fever," "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening," and "Goodness Gracious Me."

"Do You Want to Dance" is taken from an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Tracks 10 through 12 come from an unknown TV show in Belgium in 1964. There are a few other songs from that show that I didn't include (you can watch the whole thing on YouTube) because I have them in other versions in this series.

Note that two of the actual BBC sessions songs have "[Edit]" in their names. This is due to the usual problem of BBC DJs talking over the music. I applied the usual solution, using the X-Minus audio editing program to wipe out the talking but keep the music.

This album is 39 minutes long.

01 King Creole (Cliff Richard)
02 Almost like Being in Love (Cliff Richard)
03 Travellin' Light (Cliff Richard)
04 I Wish I Were in Love Again (Cliff Richard & Petula Clark)

07 Goodness Gracious Me (Cliff Richard & Jill Browne)
08 Do You Want to Dance (Cliff Richard)

Cliff Richard - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: 1958-1960

Here's another artist for my BBC project. British singer Cliff Richard is a minor musical footnote in the U.S., but he's a household name in Britain. He's sold over 250 million records worldwide, making him one of the top ten musicians of all time. He's also the third most successful singles artist in Britain, behind only Elvis Presley and the Beatles. Furthermore, he's been in the charts for an astoundingly long time, having had Number One hits in Britain for five decades in a row.

Due to all of that success, it's not surprise that he's done many BBC sessions over the years. I've prepared six BBC albums for him, and that only deals with his career from the late 1950s to the end of the 1970s.

There are some fair critiques one can make of Richard's musical career as a whole. It's very mainstream and show-biz, and he never was much for writing songs himself. However, his 1950s material, the subject of this volume, is different. Back then, plain ol' rock and roll was all the rage, and that's what he specialized in at the time. This album consists of a mix of songs that Richard made famous, such as his first hit, "Move It," which went to Number Two in Britain in 1958, and covers of rock and roll classics, with occasional change of pace ballads.

His rocking backing band would become quite accomplished in their own right. First known as the Drifters, they changed their name to the Shadows in 1959 due to legal problems because of the already established Drifters soul group in the US. They would go on to have many instrumental hits in Britain, including five Number Ones, while staying Richard's backing band until 1968.

All of the recordings here have been officially released on a BBC compilation album called "Let Me Tell You Baby... It's Called Rock and Roll." I removed a few songs that were performed more than once. I also removed a bunch of instrumentals by the Drifters/Shadows, since I wanted to keep the focus on Richard. However, I kept one instrumental, "Apache," since it was such a huge hit, staying at Number One for five weeks in Britain in 1960. (A cover version by Jorgen Ingmann topped the charts in the U.S.) I put that at the very end though, as a quasi-bonus track.

The sound quality starts out a bit rocky. The first four songs come from a 1958 recording session, and the quality of those songs are merely good, not excellent. But hang on, because it sounds much better for the rest. We're lucky these recordings survived at all, since the BBC didn't generally keep copies of their shows and these date all the way back to the 1950s.

This album is 58 minutes long.
