Tir Na Nog - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: Live: 1971-1972

I've been posting a lot of music by the Irish folk-rock duo Tir Na Nog, considering they only released three albums in their early 1970s heyday. Sadly, this is the fourth and last album of theirs I have to post. This contains all live material that was played by the BBC at the time.

This consists of two BBC concerts. Since they were relatively short, less than half an hour each, I've put them together. Luckily, all of the songs played were different.

However, note that I screwed up a little bit. One song, "Spotlight," that I thought belonged here on close inspection was from a BBC studio session instead, so I've updated Volume 1 and put that there at the same time I'm posting this.

The first half of this album (tracks 1 to 13) is from a 1971 BBC concert. This was officially released on the album "Live 1970-'71." Weirdly though, the first song was left off that release. I found it on bootleg and added it in. The second half is a BBC concert that is from 1972. All of those songs are from the official album "Spotlight: BBC Recordings 1972-1973."

This album is 47 minutes long.

Tir Na Nog - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: 1971-1973

I got a request to post more albums from the Irish folk rock duo Tir Na Nog, so here's another one. I have another album after this, and that's all I've got.

I've created two albums of BBC recordings. I realized I could split them logically into BBC studio sessions and BBC live sessions. That solves the problem of having some songs done twice. This is the studio sessions album.

All the songs here come from two official, but obscure, albums: "Live 1970-'71" and "Spotlight BBC Recordings 1972-1973." You can tell which ones come from the  "Live 1970-'71" because those were all taken from the "Top of the Pops" BBC radio show, hosted by DJ Brian Matthew, and he was the worst offender when it came to talking over the music. So that's why the first six songs have "[Edit]" in their names. As usual, I used the audio editing program X-Minus to wipe out the talking.

Here's an interesting fact: Tir Na Nog covered "Free Ride," a song by folk singer Nick Drake, on their 1973 album "Strong in the Sun." It's performed here too. Drake died in 1974, still a relatively unknown musical figure at the time. This made Tir Na Nog the only non-obscure musical artists to cover a Drake song while he was still alive.

Speaking of covers, "Maggie's Fam" is the well known Bob Dylan song. But I believe all the others are originals.

This album is 45 minutes long.

I believe the cover photo is an outtake from the photo sessions for their third album, "Strong in the Sun."

Tir Na Nog - Live, 1970-1971

Here's another album from the Irish folk rock duo Tir Na Nog. They're so obscure that there are virtually no bootlegs of them. But I did find one, only on YouTube. It only had some songs from a selection of undated concerts in a small club in Cornwall, Britain, in 1971. Additionally, their only official live album from their 1970s heyday is called "Live 1970-'71." (A title similar to mine here, but different.) That combines some BBC material with a short live set they did for "Doing Their Thing," a short-lived music show on the Granada TV channel in Britain.

So this album is a combination of the two sources. Tracks 1 through 13 make up the compete "Doing Their Thing" performance. The rest comes from the bootleg of the Cornwall shows. The unreleased songs have good sound quality in my opinion, close to the others. Plus, there's banter before many of the songs in both. So, in my opinion, it sounds like one cohesive show.

The Cornwall boot on YouTube actually has many more songs. But I've only included the ones not performed in the "Doing Your Thing" show or other BBC recordings that I'll post later, since the quality is a little worse.

There are a few cover songs here: "Woodstock" by Joni Mitchell, "Willy o' Winsbury," a traditional song, "Story of Isaac" by Leonard Cohen, and "Reason to Believe" by Tim Hardin. No official versions of "Willy o' Winsbury" and "Reason to Believe" by the duo have been released.

This album is 42 minutes long. The "Doing Their Thing" portion is 25 minutes long.

The cover picture is a bit rough. That's because it's a screenshot from the "Doing Their Thing" TV show. There are nearly no photos of the band from that time period otherwise.

Tir Na Nog - In the Morning - Alternate Version (1970)

I'm going to post a few things from the Irish folk duo Tir Na Nog, starting here. They're rather obscure. I hadn't even heard of them until a couple of years ago (as I write this in 2023). But if you haven't heard of them either, you might want to give them a try. Here's how they're described in their Wikipedia entry: "They are often considered one of the first progressive folk bands with other artists like Nick Drake or groups like Pentangle. Their music mainly consists of their own compositions, based on strong Celtic roots and typically featuring intricate acoustic guitar playing and close harmony singing."

The duo consists of Leo O'Kelly and Sonny Condell, with both of them singing and writing songs. They put out three albums from 1971 to 1973 that were critically acclaimed but didn't sell that well. They probably would have done a lot better except for the fact that they broke up after only those three albums. They later reunited, and put out a new studio album in 2015, but their momentum had been lost.

Here's the band's Wikipedia entry, if you want to know more:

Tír na nÓg (band) - Wikipedia

But instead of thinking of them putting out three studio albums in the early 1970s, you really could make it four. In 1999, the album "In the Morning" was released. It consists of 15 previously unreleased demos recorded in 1970, before the band recorded anything else. I've created an alternate version by removing all the songs that were later included on their other studio albums in that time period. Then I also added the A- and B-sides to a 1970 single, because those two songs never appeared on any of their later albums. (They did make it as bonus tracks to a much later release of their 1971 album "Tir Na Nog.")

Even with the two extra songs, this album is rather short, at 30 minutes. But I don't think the demos of the songs that they later recorded for other albums are that different from those album versions, so I think this is a much better listen. The sound quality is very good, since these were done in a studio. However, I thought the lead vocals of the song "Patterns" were too low in the mix, so I used the audio editing program Spleeter to boost them. That's why there's "[Edit]" in that song title.

Their other albums generally contained only songs they wrote themselves. But this one has a number of cover songs. There's "Patterns" by Simon and Garfunkel, "Story of Isaac" by Leonard Cohen, "To Susan on the West Coast Waiting" by Donovan, "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry" by Bob Dylan, and "Songs to Ageing Children Come" by Joni Mitchell. As you can see from those names, they knew to cover songs by the very best folk artists. The other five songs are originals.

By the way, technically speaking, the band's name should be: "Tír na nÓg." But I'm using a more conventional spelling, without the accents marks, due to many computers having trouble with those marks. In case you're curious, the band's name means "Land of the Young" and is a Celtic supernatural realm.

I used the official album cover art, for the most part. I didn't like the red text on it. All of the text was too small to be read easily. Plus, there was a bunch of promotional or administrative text that was unnecessary. So I removed that text, and kept just the band name and album name. I used the same font, color, and location as before, but made it larger, and framed it in white to make it stand out more.
