Georgie Fame & Friends - BBC Sessions, Volume 7: Friday Night Is Music Night, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Cheltenham, Britain, 5-3-2013

Here's another BBC album by Georgie Fame. This one is rather unusual in that it's kind of a celebration of him having over 50 years in the music business. It features some longtime collaborators as special guests: Alan Price, Zoot Money, and Madeline Bell.

Most of the songs were put together in a careful way, in order to tell the story of Fame's career, with interesting tidbits during the banter. For instance, the first song performed was one that he sang at a musical audition back in 1959.

The special guests didn't have really big roles, but each of them got at least one spotlight song. And most of Fame's most famous songs were performed before the concert was over.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and 36 minutes long.

Georgie Fame - BBC Sessions, Volume 5: In Concert, Barbican, London, Britain, 8-1-1989

Here's another BBC album by Georgie Fame. This one is a concert from 1989.

Fame had most of his commercial success in the 1960s and early 1970s with a pop style of R&B. In the 1980s, he moved into more of a jazzy style, and that can be seen here. He performed this concert with a swing-styled big band. He generally avoided performing his 1960s hits, though he did do a different styled take on "The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde."

I didn't even know this recording existed, but it came to me thanks to musical associate Progsprog. So thanks again to him. This is yet another recording that had disappeared from the Internet but now can go back into circulation.

Once again though, there's some renumbering involved. I had already posted a Fame BBC concert from 2005. So that one is now being renamed to "Volume 6." You can find the revised version of that one here:

Olivia Newton-John - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: 1971-1974

As I've mentioned previously, I have a musical associate who has kindly passed on to me some recordings from the BBC radio show "Top of the Pops" that are otherwise extremely rare and often unbootlegged until now. He gave me some of those featuring Australian singer Olivia Newton-John from the early 1970s. So I tried to see if I could find enough material to make an entire BBC album out of it. To my surprise, I found enough for three volumes. Here's the first one.

I doubt Olivia Newton-John needs much in the way of an introduction, considering she's one of the best selling singers of all time, with over 100 million records sold. She first became a star in Britain in 1971 with the songs "If Not for You" and "Banks of the Ohio" both reaching the Top Ten there. So it's not surprising that's when she first starting performing for the BBC. The ultra-rare "Top of the Pops" I previously mentioned are tracks 1 through 5, plus 8 and 13. Some other songs appeared on that radio show, but I checked and they were the same as the record versions. Just playing the record versions became the general trend on that show around 1973, so there are no other performances from her after that year.

Note that four of these seven had BBC DJ Brian Matthew talking over the music at times. So I did my usual thing and used the UVR5 audio editing program to get rid of the talking. That's why four songs have "[Edit]" in their titles.

Those seven songs by themselves wouldn't be enough to make up an album. So I went digging to see what else I could come up with. I got lucky and found a fan site called "Only Olivia." Here's the URL:

https://www.onlyolivia.com/

It has information of probably every BBC TV show appearance she did, so I was easily able to find most of those on YouTube. That's why I found enough for two albums made up of radio and TV sessions, plus another one consisting of a concert. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is from the Harry Secombe Show in 1972. "Close to You" is from a BBC TV movie called "The Case." Tracks 9 through 12 are from another BBC TV movie, "The New Fangled Wandering Minstrel Show." That one co-starred Newton-John with singer Georgie Fame, so that includes two duets by them. Note that for some of these songs, including all the ones from the BBC TV movies, were never released in any form on record.

The last three songs are from another BBC TV show, "Clunk Click," in 1974. Like everything else on this album, these performances are officially unreleased. For most of the songs other than the Top of the Pops and TV movie ones, there was audience applause. I used the MVSEP audio editing program to get rid of most of that, so those songs would fit in with the ones without applause.

The bonus track, "It Must Be Love," is a duet with singer Labi Siffre of a hit song he wrote. Unfortunately, the sound quality isn't as good as the rest, so that's why that one is a bonus track. That comes from a short-lived BBC TV show hosted by Newton-John called "Moods of Love," in 1974. There will be more about that show in the next volume.

This album is 44 minutes long, not including the bonus track.

01 Don't Move Away (Olivia Newton-John & Cliff Richard)
02 Help Me Make It through the Night [Edit] (Olivia Newton-John)

05 What Is Life [Edit] (Olivia Newton-John)

Van Morrison - BBC Sessions, Volume 6: In Concert, Jazz and Blues Festival, Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Britain, 8-6-1995

Here's another volume of Van Morrison performing for the BBC. This time, it's a 1995 concert.

This concert is unusual in that he was backed by an orchestra, specifically the BBC Big Band. It occurred before the release of his album "How Long Has This Been Going On" near the end of the year. However, this was close to when that album was recorded, and many of the songs on her would also later appear on that album. There was an unusual amount of covers on that album, and there's quite a few covers here too, despite it being a relatively short concert (or, more likely, edit of a concert). Also, that album was credited to "Van Morrison with Georgie Fame and Friends." Georgie Fame is here as well, on keyboards and backing vocals.

This album is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 50 minutes long.

01 Alright, Okay, You Win (Van Morrison)
02 How Long Has This Been Going On (Van Morrison)
03 talk (Van Morrison)

Georgie Fame - BBC Sessions, Volume 6: BBC Four Sessions, LSO St. Luke's, London, Britain, 4-24-2005

Here's another BBC album by British singer Georgie Fame. This is the sixth such album. It's a concert.

Fame, like Price, had his commercial heyday in the 1960s. But he was much more successful than Price, including having three Number One singles in Britain. So he remained popular enough in the 2000s for the BBC to broadcast one of his concerts. He boosted his appeal by including some other 1960s stars as guests: Geno Washington, Zoot Money, and Madeline Bell. Each of them got song to sing lead vocals. Then Money and Bell came back to help with the last song.

This concert is unreleased. It's from a BBC TV series called "BBC Four Sessions." I converted the video to audio then broke it into mp3s.

By the way, the date in the title is almost certainly the broadcast date, not the actual date of recording, which I always prefer to use when it's known.

This album is 58 minutes long.

UPDATE: On November 12, 2025, I updated the mp3 download file. The music is exactly the same. But I found an earlier volume in this series that I'd missed, so the volume number changed. That meant the title, cover art, and mp3 tags changed too.

Alan Price & Georgie Fame - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: 1969-1971

Alan Price and Georgie Fame found a lot of fame as solo acts in the 1960s. I've already posted albums of Price's BBC sessions and Fame's 1960s BBC sessions. The BBC solo sessions for both of them end towards the end of the 1960s because they teamed up as a duo for a few years.

It was an unusual pairing in that both of them were lead singers and piano players, but they made it work. They generally traded lead vocals on most of these songs, or sang in harmony.

The first evidence I have of them teaming up are from an appearance on Lulu's BBC TV show in early 1969. Those make up the first three songs here. They then appeared as a duo more prominently for a TV special in late 1969. That's represented with the next three songs here (tracks 4 through 6).

After those TV special songs come three songs with just Price (tracks 7 through 9). All three songs are from 1970 BBC studio sessions. I've included them here because they fit better chronologically than tacking them onto the last solo Price BBC album I made.

Price and Fame only put out one album as a duo in 1971, and they had a big hit in Britain with the song "Rosetta." When that came out, they did more BBC studios sessions as a duo. All the rest of the songs here are from three BBC sessions they did in 1971.

Everything on this album is officially unreleased. Virtually all of the BBC studio sessions were made available to me thanks to musical associate Marley. Those come from BBC transcription discs, and they have excellent sound quality.

As if often the case, the BBC DJs talked over the music sometimes. So as I usually do, I used the X-Minus audio editing program to wipe their talking while keeping the music. That's why so many songs have "[Edit]" in their names. I edited "Bring It on Home to Me" from the 1969 TV special for a different reason, but I forget what it is exactly.

This album is 49 minutes long.

UPDATE: On April 6, 2026, I updated the mp3 download file. I added three songs, the first three ones. All of them are from an appearance on a Lulu BBC TV show that I'd previously missed.

01 Back in the U.S.S.R. (Alan Price & Georgie Fame)
02 Games People Play (Alan Price & Georgie Fame)

Georgie Fame - BBC Sessions, Volume 4 (1969-1970)

Back in May 2022, I posted three volumes of British singer Georgie Fame at the BBC. At the time, I thought I was done. I'd noted that there was evidence he'd done more BBC sessions around 1969, but I was unable to find them. Now I've found them, thanks to the help of musical associate Marley. There's enough for a whole new Volume 4.

Previously, I'd only been able to find three of the performances here. Those had been on "Volume 3" in this series. So at the same time I'm posting this, I've reposted that volume with those three songs removed. If you want this, I recommend you redownload that volume too.

Here's the link for that:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2022/05/georgie-fame-bbc-sessions-volume-3-1966.html

Everything here is officially unreleased. Two of the songs, "You Can't Do That" and "Am I Wasting My Time," are solo performances for a BBC TV show in 1969 that Fame did with Alan Price called "The Price of Fame." The rest are all BBC studio sessions. Most of those come from "Top of the Pops" transcription discs. These are very rare, I don't think this material has been shared on the Internet for many years. But they also have great sound quality.

Not surprisingly, these recording faced the usual problem of BBC DJs talking over the music. In fact, every single song other than the two done for the BBC TV show mentioned above had the DJ talking problem, as you can see from all the "[Edit]" mentions in the song titles. But I used the X-Minus audio editing program to wipe out the talking, as I usually do.

The collaboration between Fame and Alan Price that started with that 1969 TV show continued and deepened, resulting in a 1971 album they did together. I've already posted an album of their duet BBC sessions. But I've found more of those, enough to split that album into two. I'll be posting that material soon.

This album is 36 minutes long.

Georgie Fame - BBC Sessions, Volume 3 (1966-1968)

Here's the third and final album of George Fame at the BBC in the 1960s.

Fame remained very popular during this time frame. In fact, one of the songs here, "The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde," was a number one hit in Britain in 1968 (and his only significant hit in the US).

Seven songs here are officially released, from the album "The Complete Live Broadcasts." "Knock on Wood" and "Sidewinder" come from an appearance on the German TV show "Beat Club" in 1968. Those songs are unreleased. There also are four unreleased songs from BBC studio sessions.

As is typically the case with 1960s BBC sessions, some of the songs had BBC DJs talking over the music. And, as I usually do, I wiped that talking out using the X-Minus audio editing program. There were six such songs this time (each one with "[Edit]" in their titles).

This album is 39 minutes long.

UPDATE: The mp3 download file was updated on June 12, 2022. I found two songs I'd missed, "Someday Man" and "Fire and Rain."

Georgie Fame - BBC Sessions, Volume 2 (1965-1966)

This is the second of three volumes of Georgie Fame playing for the BBC.

I've said most of what I want to say here in my comments about Volume 1. This is a very straightforward BBC collection. All of the songs are actual BBC studio sessions, and all of them are officially released, from the album "The Complete Live Broadcasts."

Also like Volume 1, and most of the BBC albums I've been posting here, there was a problem with BBC DJs talking over the intros and outros for some of the songs. In this case, there were six such songs (the ones with "[Edit]" in their names). But as I usually do, I used the X-Minus audio editing program to wipe out the talking while keeping the underlying music.

On a minor note, one song here, "Call Me," is a duet between Fame and Lulu. Since I've already posted three albums of Lulu at the BBC, I put that exact same performance on one of those.

This album is 43 minutes long.

Georgie Fame - BBC Sessions, Volume 1 (1964-1965)

I've posted an album of Georgie Fame at the BBC in the early 1970s as part of a partnership with fellow keyboard player Alan Price. This is the start of three volumes of him performing at the BBC in the 1960s on his own.

I suppose Fame isn't that well known in the US these days. He only had one Top Ten hit there, in 1968 with "The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde." But in Britain he's much better known, since he had three number one hits there with "Yeh Yeh," "Get Away," and "The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde," as well a bunch of minor hits. Fame is British, and added some R&B and/or jazz sensibilities to the charts. As I write this in April 2022, he's 78 years old, but still touring and recording. If you want to know more about him, here's his Wikipedia page:

Georgie Fame - Wikipedia

All the songs on this volume have been officially released, and they all sound great. The first five songs are from a live session at the Flamingo Club in London that was broadcast on the BBC at the time. I've edited the songs some to remove a DJ talking between songs, as well as some crowd noise.

The remaining songs were all done in BBC studios without an audience. By the time of the first studio session here in late 1964, he was having his first number one hit with "Yeh Yeh" after only a couple of failed singles. From that time forward through the end of the 1960s, the BBC had him do sessions on a fairly regular basis.

A few of the songs have "[Edit]" in their titles. It's the usual reason for these BBC sessions: BBC DJs talking over the music. And as I usually do, I used the audio editing program X-Minus to remove that talking while keeping the underlying music.

This album is 46 minutes long.

Alan Price & Georgie Fame - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: 1972-1973

NOTE: I first posted this album in February 2022. Since then, I found more songs, enough to split this album in two. Because most of the newly discovered songs are from 1969 to 1971, I split that album off and named it "Volume 1." This one has been renamed from just "BBC Sessions" to "BBC Sessions, Volume 2." If you're interested in this one, I highly recommend you get "Volume 1" as well.

Here's the link for that:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2022/12/alan-price-georgie-fame-bbc-sessions.html

Everything here is officially unreleased. There actually are only four songs from proper BBC sessions, tracks 10, 11, 13, and 14. But most of the rest, tracks one through eight come from a BBC TV show called "The Two Ronnies." This was mostly a comedy show, but they played one song a week for each of the eight episodes. It wasn't easy, but I managed to find all eight, sometimes by finding them in full length videos of the shows.

The remaining two songs, tracks nine and 12, come from another British TV show called "The Morecambe and Wise Show." Those are from 1973. It seems the Price and Fame partnership quietly came to an end shortly after that.

They only put out on single as a duo in 1973, but their solo music careers continued. Price in particular had big success in 1973 with the "O Lucky Man" single and movie soundtrack. Two of the actual BBC studio sessions tracks, the last two songs here, feature just Price are are from his "O Lucky Man" project.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any more BBC sessions from Price or Fame in the years after this, either together or solo, so the series ends here.

It seems that most of the songs on this album were never put out on singles or albums by the Price and Fame duo. A few were done here and there during their solo careers, but I think most are unique to these versions.

Note that when I split the album, as mentioned above, most of the songs I had prior to the split ended up on this album. But four of the songs here are new: "Don't Hit Me When I'm Down," "Street Lights," "Poor People," and "Sell, Sell, Sell." I also moved four songs to "Volume 1," where they fit chronologically.

This album is 38 minutes long.

Various Artists - NME Poll Winners' Concert, Empire Pool, London, Britain, 4-11-1965

I read an interesting article today (in January 2022) about how the sale of new music is continually falling to all time lows every year, while interest in older music continues to rise. It's a good article. I suggest you check it out:

https://tedgioia.substack.com/p/is-old-music-killing-new-music

As the article points out, there's still plenty of good new music, it's just that's not what gets promoted and makes it big, due to screwed-up record companies and other factors. Compare the artists on the top of the charts today to the quality of the mainstream artists at the time of this 1965 concert: the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Animals, Dusty Springfield, Them (with Van Morrison), the Moody Blues, Donovan, and many more, all sharing the same stage! Is it any wonder that lots of people (including me) are more interested in this kind of music than the generic, pre-packaged pop of today? The amount of sheer talent bursting up the charts in 1965 was staggering.

The reason so many big names played this one concert was because it was an awards show of sorts for NME - New Musical Express, a British music magazine. NME began giving out yearly poll winner awards in 1953, and continue to do it until this day (2022 as I write this). At least through 1971, there were annual concerts to celebrate the winners. But unlike most awards shows, this concert just focused on music instead of bogging things down with lots of speeches and award presentations (though there was a short section for that).

I would love to hear the 1966, 1967, and 1968 shows in full, since music just got better and better as the 1960s went on, in my opinion, and all sorts of interesting artists played in those later shows, including Cream, the Small Faces, the Move, the Beach Boys, Cat Stevens, the Who, the Yardbirds, and lots more, including more appearances by big names in this concert, like the Beatles and Rolling Stones. It seems only the 1964, 1965 and 1966 shows are available on bootleg. I'm posting the 1965 one first as I think it's more interesting, with these mostly British Invasion acts more fully developed by then.

The sound quality is excellent throughout. This concert was professionally recorded in order to be broadcast on British TV a short time afterwards. The TV version was edited down, but somehow luckily a recording of the entire show has made its way to the public. You can watch the entire thing on YouTube, though it's only in black and white.

This concert took place before artists typically stretched out with lots of soloing and jamming and such. These songs don't differ that much from their studio versions (with a few exceptions, like Them and the Animals). But I still think this is a fascinating listen, as there aren't many quality concert recordings from this early in the 1960s. In particular, there were many artists who were pretty big back in the day but have little to no surviving audio or video of them in concert. Even for major names like the Animals and Dusty Springfield, there's very little from around this time period. And for the lesser known acts, this is often the only evidence of them in concert that seems to still exist.

I'm a big Kinks fan, so a minor disappointment for me is that the Kinks only played two songs. Even at this early stage in their career they were a big enough name to deserve more time. Apparently, this has to do with them being late to the show, as they had just got off a plane coming from another country. You can hear guitarist Dave Davies apologize about this between songs. According to some accounts, they actually played after the Beatles, as the very last act. However, the recording I used had them just before the Beatles, and that seems to fit in terms of the audience applause and announcement and such, so I'm keeping it that way.

As far as naming the artists for each song goes, technically I should have put the names of the emcee or emcees on many of the talk tracks. Some of those had band members talking, some had the emcees, and some where a mix. But rather than spend time dealing with all that, I just put the name of the act being introduced, for simplicity's sake. (Unfortunately, one of the emcees was DJ Jimmy Savile, who later was disgraced in a child molestation scandal. Thankfully, his role here is very minor.) I only put in the DJ names on the very first and last tracks, since those weren't linked to any particular artists.

A couple of the performers here are rather forgettable. I was tempted to cut out Freddie and the Dreamers and Sounds Incorporated in particular. But ultimately I decided it was best to present the entire thing unedited (although I cut out some annoying laughter by Freddie and the Dreamers between songs). Overall, I think the percentage of quality performers is quite high.

The Beatles only got to do a 15 minute long set, but it's nice that you can actually hear them perform instead of being totally drowned out by screaming, as was typical of the time. Apparently, the arena (Empire Pool, later renamed Wembley Arena), held about 10,000 people. I'm sure that, by 1965, the Beatles could have filled up a much larger venue in London all on their own.

In case you're curious about who won the poll awards this year, there's a list at the NME website, which you can see here:

https://www.nme.com/nme-awards/awards-history/1965-606223

It seems there were even more musical acts who performed but didn't make it to the recording for one reason or another. I'm not entirely sure if they actually performed, but these other names were included in the program given to the audience and were at least scheduled to perform: Tom Jones, the Bachelors, the Rockin' Berries, and Twinkle.

This concert is two hours and 23 minutes long. I cut out some dead air between songs. But there was surprisingly little of that to begin with. Either this was already edited down, or this was a tightly run show.

When I first posted this album in 2022, I used a black and white photo of the Beatles from the concert that I colorized. But looking at the cover again in 2026, I decided the photo wasn't very good. So I used a different photo of the Beatles from the concert that is zoomed in closer, and has more detail. This one also was black and white, and then colorized by me with the use of the Kolorize program.

I took most of the cover text from advertisements of the show, though I added in the list of some of the artists.
