Grace Potter - Twilight Hour, Volume 8 - Home Concert, Burlington, VT, 7-27-2020 to 8-3-2020

I'm making a concerted effort to post more of the 2020 home concerts that I've been sitting on for months. If you're aware of any of the previous ones from Grace Potter, you should know the deal. She played (mostly) weekly home concerts with a small band, sometimes doing covers and sometimes doing originals. I only selected the full songs from longer concerts that contained lots of talking and some snippets of songs.

This one combines two concerts. Only the first three songs are from the first concert. The performances actually date to a soundcheck she did in early March 2020, right before the global pandemic hit hard and all concerts got cancelled. The second show consists of songs with a space theme. (Apparently, she's a really big Star Trek fan.) They're all covers of famous songs, with the exception of one space-related original ("Stars").

The last song is a bonus track of sorts. She played one song with a different band for a Tom Petty tribute concert roughly around this time period. Since the album wasn't that long, I threw it on at the end. It makes the full album 48 minutes long.

Unfortunately for this album series, she's only done two more "Twilight Hour" home concerts since this show. One was a Christmas themed show in December 2020. I have that, but there are only a few usable songs. The other was a Valentine's Day themed show in February 2021. I don't have that one. If anyone else does, and could share it with me, I probably could put together a ninth album in this series.

The reason her home concerts have ended is because she's resumed doing concerts in front of audiences, though in Covid-safe ways, like playing to people in cars in drive-through movie theaters.

To promote the space-themed show, Potter took some photos of herself in a Star Trek uniform. So that's what I've used here. I took the "Twilight Hour" lettering from the promotional artwork of another one of her home concerts.

Grace Potter - Twilight Hour, Volume 7 - Home Concert, Topanga, CA, 7-13-2020 to 7-20-2020

I still have some home concerts from 2020 left to post. For instance, I've got a few more from Grace Potter. So here's the next one from her.

This is just like the others in her "Twilight Hour" series. Basically, she played these songs with a small band - I think just a guitarist and a drummer. There was a lot of talking between songs, and sometimes some snippets or failed attempts (since she often was winging it). I didn't include any of that, just the songs that were successfully done.

This comes from two consecutive songs, one week apart. For the first show, she played her own personal rarities, including some songs she's never officially released. For the second show here, she played all of her own songs, but stuff she released, mostly from her earlier albums.

01 At Your Request (Grace Potter)
02 Deliverance Road (Grace Potter)
03 Somebody Fix Me (Grace Potter)
04 Somewhere Out There (Grace Potter)
05 Til the Morning Comes (Grace Potter)
06 Letter to My Children (Grace Potter)
07 Crazy Parade (Grace Potter)
08 Sweet Hands (Grace Potter)
09 That Phone (Grace Potter)
10 Roulette (Grace Potter)
11 One Heart Missing (Grace Potter)
12 Ah Mary [Country Version] (Grace Potter)
13 Can't See Through (Grace Potter)

For the cover art, once again I used one of Potter's chalk board drawings. I don't think it was specifically for either of these shows, but hey, close enough for horseshoes.

Grace Potter - Twilight Hour, Volume 6 - Home Concert, Topanga, CA, 6-22-2020 to 6-29-2020

There's such an overwhelming amount of good music that hasn't properly appeared on album that I want to post on this blog that I sometimes feel overwhelmed. I've been doing this for over two years, but it seems like I still have an endless amount of albums to post. For instance, the surge of home concerts due to the coronavirus pandemic has largely subsided, but I still have a bunch of them from 2020 I haven't gotten around to posting yet. Here's another one from Grace Potter, but I have three more in the same vein after this one.

This album is a compilation of two of her "Twilight Hour" live Internet broadcasts. The first one was all cover versions. Those are the first six songs. She mostly did well known songs but she also did a few obscurities. She played a song by from Spirit, "Topanga Windows," probably inspired by the fact that she lives in Topanga Canyon. She also did part of "Another One Rides the Bus," which is the Weird Al Yankovic parody of "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen. And she did "The Weary Kind" a song by Ryan Bingham that was featured in the 2009 movie "Crazy Heart."

The second show, exactly one week later, focused entirely on her 2015 album "Midnight." She played a majority of the songs from that album. As I've expressed with previous album postings, I generally prefer the way she does her own songs in her "Twilight Hour" shows over her album versions. I suspect the album versions are too fussed with and overproduced, whereas these versions are done with a band, yet, but they have a stripped down approach that works well.

This album is 56 minutes long.

01 For What It's Worth (Grace Potter)
02 Topanga Windows (Grace Potter)
03 Another One Rides the Bus (Grace Potter)
04 Corrina, Corrina (Grace Potter)
05 Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (Grace Potter)
06 Going Up the Country (Grace Potter)
07 The Weary Kind [Theme from Crazy Heart] (Grace Potter)
10 Hot to the Touch (Grace Potter)
11 Alive Tonight (Grace Potter)
12 Your Girl (Grace Potter)
13 The Miner (Grace Potter)
14 Look What We've Become (Grace Potter)
15 Low (Grace Potter)
16 Nobody's Born With a Broken Heart (Grace Potter)
17 Let You Go (Grace Potter)

As with most of the other albums in this series that I've posted, I've used Potter's own artwork for the album covers, taken from her Instagram account. I doubt either of these shows fit the "Songs of Togetherness" theme expressed in the art, but that's okay. ;)

Grace Potter - Twilight Hour, Volume 5 - Home Concert, Topanga, CA, 6-8-2020 to 6-15-2020

Here's the next in a series of Grace Potter home concert albums. Even though it's already the second month of 2021 as I write this, I still have a bunch of home concert albums from 2020 that need to be posted. In fact, from Potter alone, after this one, I have four more. So here we go again.

This comes from two concerts, since neither of them had enough material to make up a full album. The first half, up to and including the song "Something in the Air," are mostly covers of famous songs. The only original in that bunch is "The Divide." The remaining songs are originals, and all are versions of songs that first appeared on her "Daylight" album, which was released in 2019.

As with past albums in this series, Potter was generally winging it. So she tried out some songs that didn't work out and usually gave up on them early. I haven't included any of those. Most of these performances are with a small band. The album is 47 minutes long.

There's not much else to say except that if you liked the previous albums in this series, you should like this one too. The sound quality is the same as the others.

01 What the World Needs Now (Grace Potter)
02 Come Together (Grace Potter)
03 Let's Get Together (Grace Potter)
04 One Love (Grace Potter)
05 Pride [In the Name of Love] (Grace Potter)
06 The Divide (Grace Potter)
07 Something in the Air (Grace Potter)
08 Love Is Love (Grace Potter)
09 Back to Me (Grace Potter)
10 Repossession (Grace Potter)
11 Everyday Love (Grace Potter)
12 Desire (Grace Potter)
13 Anyone Who Knows What Love Is [Will Understand] (Grace Potter)

As with some previous albums in this series, the album cover was created by Grace Potter herself. I like her artistic style. But I didn't like the face of the woman (though I forget why). So I found a photo of her taken at the same angle, and I inserted that into the picture instead.

Grace Potter - Twilight Hour, Volume 4 - Home Concert, Topanga, CA, 5-25-2020 to 6-1-2020

It's been a while since I've posted any home concerts from Grace Potter, so here's the next one.

This album follows the same contours as the previous ones. Namely, it was a "roll with the punches" kind of performance, where she was trying things out, sometimes for the very first time. So I haven't included everything she did. Sometimes she would start a song, only get a minute or so into it, then abandon the effort. I generally haven't included those. The songs I have included are usually the ones she knew better and are all strong performances. But to gather enough to include, I compiled two home concerts one week apart into this one album.

Also like earlier home concerts, this contains a mix of originals and covers. The covers include "Dreamweaver" by Gary Wright, "Foxy Lady" by Jimi Hendrix, "The Ballroom Blitz" by Sweet, "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, "Blowin' in the Wind," by Bob Dylan, "On the Turning Away" by Pink Floyd, and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel.

Unfortunately, there's a problem with "Bohemian Rhapsody." During the rocking section near the end, her microphone didn't work, so while she was singing, her voice can barely be heard. But still, the performance was strong enough overall that I decided to include it.

The first show here, which included the first seven songs on this album, had a loose "Wayne's World" theme. That explains some of the song choices, such as "Dreamweaver" and "Bohemian Rhapsody." She had two band members helping her out on most of the songs, with drums and lead guitar. They actually dressed up to look like Wayne and Garth from the "Wayne's World" movies.

After this album, I still have four more home concert albums from her to post. She stopped doing home concerts in August 2020, because she found a way to resume touring despite the coronavirus pandemic: she plays solo acoustic concerts to people sitting in their cars in drive-in theaters.

This concert is an hour and six minutes long.

01 Stars (Grace Potter)
02 Dreamweaver (Grace Potter)
03 Nothing but the Water - Foxy Lady (Grace Potter)
04 Stop the Bus (Grace Potter)
05 Ah Mary (Grace Potter)
06 The Ballroom Blitz (Grace Potter)
07 Bohemian Rhapsody (Grace Potter)
08 Blowin' in the Wind (Grace Potter)
09 Ain't No Time (Grace Potter)
10 On the Turning Away (Grace Potter)
11 Colors (Grace Potter)
12 Empty Heart (Grace Potter)
13 Low Road (Grace Potter)
14 Bridge Over Troubled Water (Grace Potter)

In the past, I've made album covers out of chalkboard drawings Potter has made to promote her home concerts. That's the case here again. I like her artistic style.

Various Artists - Tom Petty's 70th Birthday Bash, 10-23-2020

Here's something that I think is great if you're a fan of Tom Petty's music at all. And who isn't a fan of Tom Petty's music? Petty died in 2017. Had he lived, he would have turned 70 on October 20, 2020. There has been a yearly tribute concert in his hometown of Gainsville, Florida, on his birthday each year since his death. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a normal concert wasn't possible, so a virtual home concert was held instead, with different artists sending in their cover versions of Petty songs from their homes. The entire concert was well over five hours long. I've cut that down to three hours to make a really strong concert.

Somewhat strangely, this concert was broken into three different parts. The first two parts were only played on SiriusXM satellite radio. The first part consisted mostly of performances by Gainsville musicians. Most of those musicians are obscure, with no officially recorded music whatsoever. In cutting this concert from five hours down to three, I mostly cut from the first part. There are a lot of generic and unremarkable covers of Petty songs by bands you've never heard of, such as the Arts in Medicine Hospital Band and Jeff Slate's Weekend Wilburys. But there were some excellent performances by some unknowns, so I've included those. There are were a few songs by more famous artists sprinkled in early, such as one of my favorites, Larkin Poe, doing a song with Steve Ferrone of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on drums. Another Heartbreaker, guitarist Mike Campbell, also helped with a song by Starcrawler.

For the second part of the concert, a different SiriusXM DJ took over. The focus on Gainsville musicians ended. Instead, more famous musicians from all over were featured, starting with Eddie Vedder, lead vocalist of Pearl Jam. This section continued through the performance by the Raconteurs.

The final and longest section tended to feature the most famous names, though a few lesser knowns are scattered in as well. This last second was made available on video at Tom Petty's official website and other places. You can find all of it on YouTube if you want to watch and not just listen. Since this section is much more widely available, most press accounts mistakenly asserted that was the entire concert. But in fact it was only about half.

Now, let me explain some more about what I chose not to include. There were five songs performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers scattered through the concert. Judging by appearances, they're from different years of Petty's long careers. I didn't include any of those because I felt they didn't fit the rest of the concert. They were typical versions of his famous songs, like "Refugee" and "I Need to Know." Most of the songs were done by other musicians in the concert, so including them would have increased the repetition of songs a lot.

There also were a lot of spoken word sections. I removed nearly all of those. They're nice to hear once or twice, but they don't have much replay value after that, in my opinion. I've only included the between song banter by Mike Campbell & Benmont Tench, the lead guitarist and pianist, respectively, of Tom Petty's band the Heartbreakers. They did a mini-set of three songs, and the banter between the songs was an important part of that, in my opinion. Nearly all the talking was in the last section of the concert. If you watch that on YouTube, you'll hear nice spoken tributes to Petty by his wife Dana, his daughter Adria, Stevie Nicks, a poem by George Harrison's wife Olivia, and more.

Most of the songs sound great. But a few were recorded from homes with poor recording equipment. I rejected a few songs due to sound quality issues. I didn't include a version of "Yer So Bad" by Adam Sandler mostly because it was so poorly recorded. The songs by Beck and Susanna Hoffs also were not recorded well, but I included them because they just barely sounded good enough for my ears, and I particularly like those two artists.

Another problem was that there didn't seem much effort to prevent multiple versions of the same songs. For instance, there were no less than four versions of the song "Wildflowers!" I removed two of them, by the bands Grouplove and the Arts in Medicine Hospital Band, while keeping the versions by Eddie Vedder and Brandi Carlile. The song "Honey Bee" was another problem. There were three versions that I decided to keep, by Larkin Poe, Grace Potter with Reysonator, and the Foo Fighters. There were all good, and all different from each other. I removed some other songs that were done more than once. There are a few other songs with two versions: "American Girl," "Room at the Top," "Runnin' Down a Dream," and "Walls (Circus)." Since the concert is so long at three hours, I figure a few of those are okay.

Almost all musicians played just one song. There are a couple of exceptions though. As mentioned above, Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench did three songs together to end the concert. Norah Jones played two songs. And Margo Price and Lukas Nelson each did one song, but then also did a duet together.

As I mentioned above, this a great concert. All sorts of my favorite musicians were included, and they did excellent versions. Honestly, I could hardly have picked a better line-up myself. If you like Tom Petty at all, please give this a listen!

Another point I want to mention is that the vast majority of the performances were done on or just before the broadcast date, from the musician's homes, but there are a few exceptions. The Gary Clark, Jr. and Jason Isbell performances comes from concerts in 2017. The Killers did their song "American Girl" in concert. I don't know the date or location, but they played that song a bunch of times in concert from 2017 to 2019. Eddie Vedder's version of "Wildflowers" is a solo acoustic version done without an audience, so it sounds much like the others. But it actually was done in 2017 at some point after Petty's death and not made public until this concert.

Oh, and one last thing: as Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench repeatedly said at the very end of the concert, if you're a US citizen, please VOTE in the election on November 3rd!

Grace Potter - Twilight Hour, Volume 3 - Home Concert, Topanga, CA, 5-18-2020

I've posted two home concerts from Grace Potter, so far. If you haven't heard them yet, you've been missing out, and this is a good opportunity to give her a try. She has a remarkable voice, is a talented songwriter, and is good on the keyboards and guitar to boot.

She did a home concert a week for several months. That's come to an end recently, because she's resumed doing live concerts. (In order for people to watch them while social distancing for the coronavius, they're being held at drive-in movie theaters, and people stay in their own cars!) The last album I posted here compiled two home concerts together, but this is just one concert that lasted 50 minutes.

This is roughly an even mix of covers and originals. The covers are "Dead Flowers" (the Rolling Stones), "Someday We'll Be Together" (the Supremes), "No Expectations" (the Rolling Stones), "Son of a Preacher Man" (Dusty Springfield), "I'll Take You There" (the Staple Singers), and "Cortez the Killer" (Neil Young). "Someday We'll Be Together" is actually a duet with Michael McDonald, former lead vocalist of the Doobie Brothers. Due to the virus, McDonald's vocals were done remotely and added to Potter's recording.

Don't be put off by all the originals. They're pretty good. Her albums have often had production issues, in my opinion, but the songs shine better in this live format. Most of the songs here are done with a band, but a very minimalist one, usually just Potter on guitar or keyboards, plus a drummer and lead guitarist.

Often during these shows, Potter is winging it. I haven't included her failed experiments, where she starts a song and gives up on it after only singing a verse or so. (I also didn't include any of the extensive talking between songs.) But I did include one very rough take, "Son of a Preacher Man." She stops it before finishing, admitting that she'd never played it before. But I thought it was cooking before the end, so I kept it. By contrast, "Cortez the Killer" is a song she's done a lot in concert, and it's a definite highlight.

By the way, one of her originals, "Please," has a very strange ending. She'd done a duet with Michael McDonald the song before that, and she still had McDonald's gruff singing style on her mind. She jokingly ended the song singing a parody of his style. I thought it was fun, so I kept it in.

01 Tiny Light (Grace Potter)
02 Eachother (Grace Potter)
03 Dead Flowers (Grace Potter)
04 Someday We'll Be Together (Grace Potter with Michael McDonald)
05 Please (Grace Potter)

Grace Potter - Twilight Hour, Volume 2 - Home Concert, Topanga, CA, 5-4-2020 to 5-11-2020

About a month ago, I published the a home concert by Grace Potter. It was the first of bunch, and this is the second. You might want to read what a wrote there for some general information. In short, she's been performing home concerts that are roughly an hour long once a week for most of the coronavirus lockdown. For this album, I had to combine two such home concerts for there to be enough material for an album. This one is an hour and two minutes long.

Sometimes for her home concerts, Potter has performed mostly or entirely her own songs. But for these two shows, nearly all the songs are covers. There are two originals towards the end. Some were performed solo, but the vast majority were played with a small band, generally just a drummer and lead guitarist, plus Potter on keyboards or guitar.

For these shows, Potter clearly was just winging it most of the time. I had to cut out a lot of songs because she only tested the waters, typically playing just one verse. For instance, for the second show, she played portions of the following songs, which I didn't include: "That's Alright Mama," "I Can't Stand the Rain," "Stacey's Mom," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Grandma's Hands," "You Really Got Me," "Whipping Post," and "What a Wonderful World." I hope she returns to full versions of those later!

I only included the songs that were done in full and clearly worked. No doubt, a lot of these have been done by her and her band in concert in the past, because they sounded good. Others were done for the first time. For the second show, which is comprised of songs 11 through 17, most of the songs were about mothers in some way, because the show took place close to Mother's Day. I'm guessing that more of those were done for the first time.

Anyway, if you haven't heard Grace Potter before, this is a good time to jump on board, due to her mostly doing classic songs that you're probably familiar with. Hopefully you'll discover that she's an excellent vocalist, but also a talented instrumentalist, and she has great taste in music.

For some, but not all of Potter's home concerts, she had made some promotional artwork using a chalkboard in her house. The mother-themed show of May 11, 2020 had such artwork made for it. I enjoy her artistic style, so I used that for the cover. I made a few minor changes to the lower half, changing the date mentioned from "May 11" to "May 4 - 11," and removing some other text.

Grace Potter - Twilight Hour, Volume 1 - Home Concert, Topanga, CA, 4-27-2020

Some musicians have used the coronavirus pandemic lockdown time to take an extended vacation, or otherwise relax. Whereas others have been busy, and actually found new fans through their home concerts. Grace Potter definitely falls into the second category. I'd never heard of her until recently, and she's not super famous. But she's been doing a weekly home concert since early in the lockdown time period, and that came to my attention, since I've been very interested in home concerts in general lately.

She's put out albums since 2004, but they haven't done that well. I think a big problem has been the production. I read some user reviews at rateyourmusic.com, and many had the same complaint, that the music was too slick and overproduced, sucking the life out of it. In my opinion, the home concert format is the ideal cure for that problem. For her weekly shows, she does the occasional song all by herself, but more are done with a band. However, it's a very limited band, often just a drummer and a guitarist, while she alternates between keyboards and guitar. So there's no possible way the music can be slick and/or overproduced.

I must say, I'm really impressed by her talent. Clearly, she has an impressive voice. But she also is a very capable songwriter, and she is talented on the guitar and keyboards as well. She's the real deal.

She also has great taste in music. I plan on posting a whole bunch of her home concerts here. For most of them, a majority of the songs she does are covers. But for this concert, she mostly does originals. The exceptions are: "House of the Rising Sun" (made famous by the Animals), "Black Hole Sun" (by Soundgarden), and "As the World Falls Down" (by David Bowie). Note that the last two songs were recorded on the exact same day, but were done separately, for the rollingstone.com home concert series "In My Room."

If you haven't heard of Grace Potter before, I recommend you check her out.

For many of her home concerts, she's created her own promotional art, drawing it on a chalkboard in her house. This is one such example. I'm impressed by her drawing talent as well as her musical talent. I didn't know a simple chalkboard drawing could look that good.
