Robbie Robertson - The Right Mistake - Non-Album Tracks (2011-2019)

I just posted an album of stray tracks by Robbie Robertson, to mark his recent passing (as I write this in August 2023). I prepared two such albums at the same time to make sure their lengths were reasonable, so I might as well post the other one while I'm at it.

The first four songs are all bonus tracks from different versions of his 2001 studio album "How to Be Clairvoyant." "I Shall Be Released" was played with Eric Clapton at the 2013 Crossroads Guitar Festival. The next song, "The Money Chant," is from "The Wolf of Wall Street" movie, but apparently it's never been officially released. "Hiawatha and the Peacemaker" comes from a record that was included with a book. "Happy Holidays" was only released on the Internet. The last song, "Theme from 'The Irishman,'" naturally comes from "The Irishman" movie soundtrack. It continues his long involvement with Martin Scorsese movie soundtracks.

This album is 43 minutes long.

01 He Don't Live Here No More [Demo] (Robbie Robertson)
02 This Is Where I Get Off [Demo] (Robbie Robertson)
03 The Right Mistake [Demo] (Robbie Robertson)
04 In the War Zone (Robbie Robertson)
05 I Shall Be Released (Robbie Robertson with Eric Clapton)
06 The Money Chant (Robbie Robertson with Matthew McConaughey)
07 Hiawatha and the Peacemaker (Robbie Robertson)
08 Happy Holidays (Robbie Robertson)
09 Theme for 'The Irishman' [Instrumental] (Robbie Robertson)

The cover photo looks to me like it was taken in a church, but apparently it's from the Village Studios in Los Angeles, taken in 2011.

Robbie Robertson - Shine Your Light - Non-Album Tracks (2000-2011)

Lots of great musicians seem to be dying lately, as I write this in August 2023. The latest is Robbie Robertson. He was the lead guitarist and main songwriter for the Band, writing classics like "The Weight " and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." He almost never sang lead vocals with the Band, but he had a fairly successful solo career after they broke up in the late 1970s. He was 80 years old when he died.

I thought I'd post some music by him to mark his passing. I had previously posted two stray tracks albums from his solo career that started in the early 1980s. I had hesitated to post another one, because I had enough material for one long album, but not quite enough for two short ones. I was waiting for some more songs from him to make two decent sized albums. But now that he's passed, there probably won't be any more new music. So I redid the two albums I'd already posted, since they were rather long.

After some rearranging, I have enough material for four albums. But the downside is that you should redownload the first two, if you don't want to miss some songs and have duplicates. Note also that I added one song to the first one and two to the second one. Those two are unreleased studio tracks that definitely shouldn't be missed. So here are the links for those:

The Far Cry of Lonely Trains

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2020/02/robbie-robertson-far-lonely-cry-of.html

Bad Intentions

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2021/05/robbie-robertson-bad-intentions-various.html

Now, on to this album. Robertson only released six studio albums in his career, but he had enough extra material for four non-album track albums. I suppose that had to do with the fact that he was involved in many movie soundtracks. The first four songs here come from soundtracks, in fact.

The unreleased song "World on Fire" is sung with Sarah MacLachlan. It's a studio outtake, so it sounds as good as the others. Another unreleased song, "Straight Down the Line," is from a TV show performance. That song was included on his studio album "How to Become Clairvoyant," but he performed live so very rarely that I figured it was worth including a live version here. "Who Do You Love" is a duet with Eric Clapton that was released on DVD only. "Going to the River" is from a Fats Domino tribute album. The last three songs are bonus tracks from various versions of "How to Become Clairvoyant."

This album is 44 minutes long.

01 Amazing Grace [Instrumental] (Robbie Robertson)
02 Carry Me (Robbie Robertson)
03 Out of the Blue [Instrumental Version] (Robbie Robertson)
04 Shine Your Light (Robbie Robertson)
05 World on Fire (Sarah McLachlan with Robbie Robertson)
06 Going to the River (Robbie Robertson with Galactic)
07 Who Do You Love (Eric Clapton & Robbie Robertson)
08 Straight Down the Line (Robbie Robertson)
09 Catwalk (Robbie Robertson)
10 Houdini (Robbie Robertson)
11 Madame X [Instrumental] [Demo] (Robbie Robertson & Eric Clapton)

California Jam, Ontario Motor Speedway, Ontario, CA, 4-6-1974, Part 8: Emerson, Lake & Palmer

The eighth and final set from the 1974 California Jam festival features the prog rock act Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

I have good news and bad news about this set. The good news is that what exists from it here sounds excellent. Most of it was officially released on a DVD, as well as on the album "Then and Now." Two more songs, "Still ... You Turn Me On" and "Lucky Man," are unreleased but sound as good as the others.

The bad news is that the set is incomplete. It is known the band also played "Hoedown" and "Jerusalem" at the start, and "Tarkus" after "Toccatta." If anyone has any music that I missed from this act, or anything else from this festival, please let me know.

Prog rock reached a peak of popularity around this time, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer were one of the biggest prog rock acts. Their album "Brain Salad Surgery" was released in late 1973. It reached Number Two on the charts in Britain, and just barely missed the Top Ten in the US.

This album is 43 minutes long.

By the way, if you put all eight of these California Jam albums together, it totals six hours and ten minutes. I'm guessing there's at least another hour, maybe two, that was performed but isn't included here.

Note that there was a second California Jam, in 1978. I'll probably try to post that in the future.

However, next up for me in terms of big festivals is the 1970 Isle of Wight festival. There were dozens of big festivals in the early 1970s, but most of them are fading from memory due to lack of quality recordings. The Isle of Wight festival, has great soundboard recordings for nearly all the major acts, making it special. But there are a few that I've heard exist but can't find. For instance, I've only found three songs performed by Kris Kristofferson, but I found someone who had his full set in great quality but no longer has it. It's a similar situation for Sly and the Family Stone, with only some of the set being easily found. If you have any of these hard-to-find recordings, please let me know soon so I can add them in.

77 Toccatta (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
78 Take a Pebble (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
79 Still ... You Turn Me On (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
80 Lucky Man (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
81 Piano Improvisations [Fugue & Little Rock Getaway] [Instrumental] (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
82 Karn Evil 9, 1st Impression, Part 2 (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
83 Karn Evil 9, 3rd Impression (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
84 Pictures at an Exhibition- Great Gates of Kiev (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)

California Jam, Ontario Motor Speedway, Ontario, CA, 4-6-1974, Part 7: Deep Purple

The seventh set from the 1974 California Jam featured Deep Purple. There are some interesting stories regarding this performance.

This is the only set from the festival that has been released in full, on the album "California Jamming." I've included it in order to present the entire festival.

Deep Purple was the biggest name out of all the artists for the festival. As such, they got to pick their time slot. They chose the second to last slot because they wanted to go on around sunset. Almost always, festival schedules ran far behind. But this one was unusual in that it actually ran ahead of schedule! This is due to a unique innovation: the entire stage was built on tracks. It could be moved out of place quickly. Meanwhile, the instruments on a second stage were prepared, and that stage was moved into position, with the two stages swapping back and forth. As a result, there were only a few minutes of down time between sets.

But this caused a problem, because Deep Purple really, really wanted sunset to happen during their set. So they waited at least an hour after the end of the Black Sabbath set, causing the audience to grow restless.

There were more problems too. Lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore is a great guitarist, but he sounds like a prima donna type. The entire festival was being filmed by ABC-TV. During their set, camera people often got close to where Blackmore was standing, in order to get close-ups of his guitar playing. This annoyed him so much that at the end of the set, he attacked one of the TV cameras with his guitar, repeatedly smashing it.

But wait, there's more. It seems the main reason the band wanted to wait for sunset was because they had pyrotechnics they wanted to set off at the end of their set. They did so, but they used too much. It caused a massive explosion and fire on stage, as you can see from the cover photo. Fearing they were in trouble and could be arrested, the band left the festival as fast as they could.

It should also be noted that this concert was one of the first to feature the band's new line-up, with two new lead singers, David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes.

This album is an hour and 26 minutes long.

California Jam, Ontario Motor Speedway, Ontario, CA, 4-6-1974, Part 6: Black Sabbath

Here's the next set from the 1974 California Jam. This time, it's the hard rockers Black Sabbath, with lead singer Ozzy Osbourne.

Unlike most of the previous sets from earlier in the day, this recording does not come from the TV and/or radio broadcast. Instead, it's a reel to reel recording that sounds excellent.

I must admit I'm not really a Black Sabbath fan. However, if you are, this was a good time for a live recording. The band released the album "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" in late 1973, and it's considered one of their best. Band member Bill Ward would later say of this time period, "The band were definitely in their heyday, in the sense that nobody had burnt out quite yet."

Due to this coming from a different source, it appears to be the full set, and not just the parts that made it to broadcast.

This album is an hour and 12 minutes long.

41 Tomorrow's Dream (Black Sabbath)
42 talk (Black Sabbath)
43 Sweet Leaf (Black Sabbath)

California Jam, Ontario Motor Speedway, Ontario, CA, 4-6-1974, Part 5: Black Oak Arkansas

The fifth act at the California Jam was Black Oak Arkansas. The festival was split into a more poppy first half and a more rocking second half, and this is the beginning of the second half.

I don't know much about Black Oak Arkansas. They're considered a Southern rock band, but with more variety than the likes of the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd. They had one hit in 1973, "Jim Dandy," a cover of a hit from the 1950s. The female singer Ruby Starr appeared on that recording. She took part in this concert, though just on that one song. You can see her dressed in red on the album cover.

Unfortunately, it seems this set is incomplete. However, I don't know how much is missing or what other songs were played. But what is here sounds good. It was recorded from the TV and/or radio broadcasts, like most of the other sets from this festival. And like most of those others, I thought the lead vocals were rather low, so I boosted them using the UVR5 audio editing program.

This album is 23 minutes long.

34 Up (Black Oak Arkansas)
35 Mutants of the Monster (Black Oak Arkansas)
36 talk (Black Oak Arkansas)
37 Jim Dandy (Black Oak Arkansas with Ruby Starr)
38 talk (Black Oak Arkansas)

California Jam, Ontario Motor Speedway, Ontario, CA, 4-6-1974, Part 4: Seals & Crofts

Posting big various artists festivals like this one forces me to post some musical acts I probably otherwise would never have posted. Seals & Crofts is a case in point.

This soft rock duo is best known for their hits "Summer Breeze," "Diamond Girl," and "Get Closer." "Get Closer" wouldn't be released until 1976. "Diamond Girl" is here, but "Summer Breeze" surprisingly is not. They only ever released one live album, in 1976, but it was an album of all new material. So this set is probably the closest thing you'll find to a live album by them, since I'm not aware of other bootlegs.

At first glance, Seals & Crofts seems like an odd choice for inclusion at a rock festival that had headlining acts like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. However, this may be due to a slight of hand. By 1974, rock festivals had gotten a bad name, and local officials rarely approved permits for them. So the organizers of this festival at first portrayed it as a pop festival with the likes of the Osmonds and Jackson Five. Once they got the approvals, they slipped in the more controversial hard rock acts, claiming they were the only big names they could find.

You can read more about that here:

California Screaming: How the California Jam banished Altamont's demons | Louder (loudersound.com)

Anyway, this appears to be the complete Seals and Crofts set. The last song may have actually been played first (according to setlist.fm), but I kept it this way because that's how it was on the bootleg I found, with the songs flowing into each other. It's likely it was rearranged this way for the TV and/or radio broadcast.

This album is 43 minutes long.

21 talk (Seals & Crofts)
22 Windflowers (Seals & Crofts)
23 Diamond Girl (Seals & Crofts)
24 King of Nothing (Seals & Crofts)
25 talk (Seals & Crofts)
26 Ruby Jean and Billy Lee (Seals & Crofts)
27 Hummingbird (Seals & Crofts)
28 Unborn Child (Seals & Crofts)
29 The Gate [Instrumental] (Seals & Crofts)
30 High on the Mountain (Seals & Crofts)
31 Ridin' Thumb (Seals & Crofts)
32 Standing on a Mountain Top (Seals & Crofts)
33 The Fiddle Song [Instrumental] (Seals & Crofts)

California Jam, Ontario Motor Speedway, Ontario, CA, 4-6-1974, Part 3: The Eagles

The third act at the 1974 California Jam was the Eagles. (And yes, I know that, technically, their name is just "Eagles.")

Unfortunately, this is a short set, consisting of just five concise songs. I assumed there was a lot more that didn't get recorded, but I found a setlist that shows they only played one more song as an encore, "Tequila Sunrise." One has to keep in mind that although the Eagles would be massively popular later, they still weren't that big at the time of this concert. In fact, their first huge hit, "The Best of My Love," came out on album one month before this concert. But it wasn't released as a single until late 1974 and wouldn't become a Number One hit until 1975. This concert was key to exposing the band to a larger audience, especially through the TV broadcast.

One interesting thing about the Eagles set is that Jackson Browne performed as a de facto member of the band for the whole set. This is because band member Don Felder had to miss the concert due to the birth of a son around the same time. Browne was already a friend of the band, and co-wrote their hit song "Take It Easy." He alternated between keyboards and guitar, and sang backing vocals.

The sound quality of this set was the roughest of all the music I found from this festival. The bass and drums were way too loud. So I used the audio editing program UVR5 to lower the bass and drums way down in the mix. It sounds a lot better now. However, I think it's likely there was so banter between songs that got edited out of the version I found.

This album is only 18 minutes long, the shortest set by far from this festival. Note that the track numbering continues from the numbering of the previous set, in case you want to put all the tracks in one folder to be heard as one massive listen.

16 James Dean (Eagles)
17 Blackberry Blossom [Instrumental] (Eagles)
18 Midnight Flyer (Eagles)
19 Already Gone (Eagles)
20 Take It Easy (Eagles)

California Jam, Ontario Motor Speedway, Ontario, CA, 4-6-1974, Part 2: Earth, Wind & Fire

This is the second set from the 1974 California Jam festival. If you want to know more about the festival as a whole, read my write-up to the first set, by Rare Earth.

Earth, Wind & Fire were a somewhat unusual choice for inclusion in this festival. In later years, they would have lots of hits all over the world. In fact, just one year after this concert they would have a Number One hit in the US with the song "Shining Star." But in 1974, they were mainly known to black audiences, with a few minor hits on the soul charts. Whereas the California Jam audience was mostly white, largely consisting of hard rock fans wanting to hear the likes of Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Still, the TV broadcast of the concert, helped expose Earth, Wind and Fire to a larger audience.

It appears the recording of their set is complete. However, their song selection was rather unusual, since they didn't play their two recent soul hits, "Mighty Mighty" and "Kalimba Story." Their one other soul hit so far was "Evil," which they did play.

This set remains officially unreleased. The bootleg I used as a source sounded very good, but the vocals were a bit low in the mix, so I fixed that using the UVR5 audio editing program.

This album is 42 minutes long.

Also, note that I start the track listing with 05 instead of 01. That's so you can drop all the different sets from this festival into one folder to make it one continuous listening.

05 Energy [Instrumental] (Earth, Wind & Fire)
06 People (Earth, Wind & Fire)
07 talk (Earth, Wind & Fire)
08 Time Is on Your Side (Earth, Wind & Fire)
09 talk (Earth, Wind & Fire)

California Jam, Ontario Motor Speedway, Ontario, CA, 4-6-1974, Part 1: Rare Earth

I mentioned recently that I plan on putting more effort into posting big festival concerts, because those often seem to slip through the cracks and get forgotten. This is a good example. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about the 1974 California Jam:

"The California Jam attracted 250,000 paying music fans. The festival set what were then records for the loudest amplification system ever installed, the highest paid attendance, and highest gross in history. It was one of the last of the original wave of rock festivals, as well as one of the most well-executed and financially successful, and presaged the era of media consolidation and the corporatization of the rock music industry."

There's a Wikipedia page on the concert, if you want to know more:

California Jam - Wikipedia

In short, from what I understand, ABC TV had a show called "In Concert." The makers of that show came up with the idea of putting on a rock festival, then dedicated four episodes of their show broadcasting the highlights from it, with some portions also broadcast on radio. But that was only part of the all-day concert. All of the Deep Purple and part of the Emerson, Lake and Palmer sets have been officially released, but none of the rest has. I was able to find most of the concert in good sound quality, but some bits are still missing.

This first set, by Rare Earth is a case in point. I found four songs in soundboard worthy quality. But it appears a fifth song, "Get Ready," was played as an encore. That probably wasn't included in the TV and/or radio broadcasts, so it seems to have disappeared. The vocals were low in the mix, so I adjusted that using the UVR5 audio editing program.

Rare Earth was best known for their hits in 1970 and 1971, "[I Know] I'm Losing You," "I Just Want to Celebrate," and "Get Ready." Their star was fading by 1974, but they still had this one big last hurrah, which was the biggest concert they ever played.

Eight musical acts performed at the California Jam. I'm posting each of their sets as separate albums, in chronological order, starting with this one. Some of the sets from the biggest acts are easy to find, but other sets are very rare. I haven't seen all of the festival put together in one place before this effort here.

This album is 44 minutes long.

Honeybus - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: 1967-1968

I recently posted four albums of stray tracks by the British band Honeybus. I just have two more albums by this band to post, and both of them are collections of BBC studio sessions.

I had been planning on posting Honeybus's BBC material regardless, but my task was made easier by the released of an official album in early 2023. All the performances here come from that album.

That means the sound quality is generally excellent, though that's not always the case. There are a couple of dodgy sounding songs that were recorded over the radio by fans, but I've put those only as bonus tracks. You will see "[Edit]" in the titles of some songs, due to the usual problem of BBC DJs talking over the music. As I usually do, I used the audio editing program UVR5 to wipe the talking but keep the underlying music.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I consider Honeybus to be a very underrated band. A big problem they had was that their record company only let them release one studio album in the seven years they were together (!), but they had three singer-songwriters, so many songs fell by the wayside. Thank God for these BBC recordings that save many songs from being totally lost. I've included some of those otherwise unreleased songs on the stray tracks albums, but I'm including them here too so one can have all their BBC recordings in one place.

I have an unusually large number of bonus tracks this time. Three of them are nice otherwise unreleased songs that are bonus tracks due to poor sound quality: "Goin' Back," "Looking Down," and "Warwick Town." "Goin' Back" is a cover of the well-known Carole King song. Unfortunately, not only does it have rough sound quality, there also was a big chunk in the middle that was missing, even though it was included on the recent official BBC album. The cut happened during the middle of the second verse. I tried to fix this, somewhat, by patching in an instrumental version of the rest of that verse, taken from elsewhere in the song. But still, there was nothing I could do to fix the missing vocals.

Two more of the bonus tracks actually sound fine: "Girl of Independent Means" and "Maxine's Parlour." The only reason they're bonus tracks is because the band played those songs twice for the BBC, and the versions aren't that different.

This album is 43 minutes long.

Sinead O'Connor - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-23-1995

I recently posted a 1990 Sinead O'Connor BBC concert to mark her recent death (as I write this in August 2023). That was the first of two BBC concerts she did that I found. Here's the other one, from 1995.

This one is from the annual big Glastonbury Festival in Britain, which is usually broadcast by the BBC. She played the festival again in 2008 and 2013. I haven't found the audio of her performances from those years, but if you have them please pass them on to me, so I can post them here.

O'Connor's popularity plummeted in 1992 after she tore up a photo of the Pope on a TV show, to protest sexual abuse by Catholic priests. (In my opinion she would later be vindicated as more and more shocking evidence of such abuse came to light.) She bounced back somewhat with her 1994 album "Universal Mother." She was still promoting that album at the time of this concert, so many of the songs come from that. She notably did not perform her massive hit "Nothing Compares 2 U," although she did play a few songs from her earlier albums.

The lead vocals were a bit low in the mix, so I boosted them using the UVR5 audio editing program. Otherwise, the sound quality is excellent.

This album is 56 minutes long.

Beck - Morning Becomes Eclectic, KCRW Studios, Santa Monica, CA, 11-4-2019

I'm back from my vacation. I had a really great time. Thanks for all the well wishes.

I've been on a kick of posting Beck's performances for the KCRW radio show "Morning Becomes Eclectic," so it's fitting that I get back to posting one of those. This one comes from 2019. It's his most recent appearance as I write this in 2023. But then again, his last studio album, "Hyperspace," came out in 2019, so hopefully he'll be back once he gets another album out.

This was another full band performance. There are many similarities between this concert and his 2017 one. They both were supporting studio albums that weren't particularly well received by fans or critics, compared to his previous albums. Both albums were marred by bad production choices, in my opinion. As a result, both KCRW shows are big improvements, because most of the band production is left behind when songs are performed live. Also, just like the 2017 concert, he spiced things up by playing some older favorites, like "The New Pollution" and "Where It's At."

This album is only 29 minutes long.

01 Uneventful Days (Beck)
02 talk (Beck)
03 The New Pollution (Beck)
04 Devil's Haircut (Beck)
05 Night Running (Beck)

Vacation

I'll be on vacation starting tomorrow and lasting for the next six days. So don't expect any new posts during that time. But I'll be back soon. And I may have some time to still read and respond to comments, we'll see.

Beck - Morning Becomes Eclectic, KCRW Studios, Santa Monica, CA, 11-7-2017

I'm really determined to post all the performances Beck did on the KCRW "Morning Becomes Eclectic" radio show. I'm finally almost there. As I write this in 2023, I just have one more to go after this one.

In October 2017, Beck released the studio album "Colors." Personally, I'm not a big fan of the album. Many other Beck fans feel the same way, because at the crowd-sourced rateyourmusic.com website, it's one of his lowest rated albums. I think a big problem with it is that it was overproduced. Here's what one reviewer said at rateyourmusic, and I totally agree: "Not helping is how absolutely over-produced this thing sounds - every sound is so cleanly cropped it all just has this gross, artificial sound that's about as far from sounding organic as one can go."

The good news that the songs sound much better in this KCRW concert. Being forced to play live means you have to leave most production techniques behind. One problem though was that his voice was relatively buried in the mix. But I used the UVR5 audio editing program to bring his voice forward.

So even if you don't like "Colors," you might like this one. Mixed in with a bunch of "Colors" songs are a few older ones, like "Devil's Haircut" and "Nausea."

The last two songs are not actually from this KCRW concert. They're from concerts in 2018. But I liked then and didn't have a better place to put them in my music collection, so I stuck them at the end.

This album is 40 minutes long. Just the KCRW portion is 32 minutes long.

01 Dreams (Beck)
02 Up All Night (Beck)
03 Think I'm in Love - I Feel Love (Beck)
04 Devil's Haircut (Beck)
05 Wow (Beck)
06 Colors (Beck)
07 Go It Alone (Beck)
08 Nausea (Beck)
09 Black Tambourine (Beck)
10 I'm So Free (Beck)
11 Seventh Heaven (Beck)

J. J. Cale - Two Meter Sessies, NOB Radiostudio, Hilversum, Netherlands, 9-21-1994

J. J. Cale rarely performed in solo acoustic mode, but I think he excelled when it did. I already posted one acoustic concert from him; here's another.

In 2006, a Cale archival triple album collection was released called "Collected." Mostly, it was a collection of his best album tracks. But at the very end, this performance was included. It's from a long-running Dutch radio show called "Two Meter Sessies." The sound quality is excellent, and there was no audience.

But that was only 23 minutes long. I thought that was rather short, so I found something else acoustic to add to the end. The last four songs come from a Canadian radio show called "Swingin' on a Star," from 1993, just a year earlier. The sound quality is excellent for that as well, although there was a cheering audience for those songs. Two songs, "Rose in the Garden" and "Tijuana," were played in both shows. But since this album is still pretty short, I figured I'd include both versions of those two.

This album is 32 minutes long with the four extra songs at the end included.

01 Travelin' Light (J. J. Cale)
02 talk (J. J. Cale)
03 Tijuana (J. J. Cale)
04 talk (J. J. Cale)
05 Hold On (J. J. Cale)
06 talk (J. J. Cale)
07 Rose in the Garden (J. J. Cale)

09 After Midnight (J. J. Cale)
10 Ride Me High (J. J. Cale)
11 talk (J. J. Cale)
12 Devil in Disguise (J. J. Cale)
13 talk (J. J. Cale)
14 Drifter's Wife (J. J. Cale)
15 Rose in the Garden (J. J. Cale)
16 Out of Style (J. J. Cale)

Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: BBC Rock Hour, Hammersmith Palais, London, Britain, 3-15-1982

I've got many Nick Lowe-related many albums to post, but for some reason I've been slow to post them. I should try to post here. Here's something at least.

From 1977 to 1981, Lowe was a co-leader of the band Rockpile, along with Dave Edmunds. For a few years after that, he basically replicated that formula, but with Paul Carrack taking the place of Edmunds as the other lead singer and sometimes songwriter. I've already posted one album from this duo, an imagined studio album that smashed their two 1982 solo albums into one. You can find that here:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2019/12/nick-lowe-paul-carrack-voodoo-knife.html

I also found not one but two BBC concerts of them playing together, so here's the first one. Many of Lowe's songs are from his Rockpile years. Meanwhile, Carrack had briefly been in the band Squeeze, but he'd only sung one song, which is possibly their best known song, "Tempted." Naturally, he sang that one. And they also sang lots of songs from their respective 1982 albums, "Nick the Knife" for Lowe and "Suburban Voodoo" for Carrack.

The sound quality is pretty good, though not as excellent as most BBC shows. There were no problems needing fixing.

This album is 55 minutes long. Based on that length, I suspect the concert was longer, but the BBC cut it down to fit it into an hour-long time slot.

01 I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
02 Stick It Where the Sun Don't Shine (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
03 talk (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
04 Tempted (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
05 talk (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
06 Always Better with You (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
07 Burning (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
08 Marie Provost (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
09 Cruel to Be Kind (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
10 talk (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
11 Lesson in Love (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
12 A Little Unkind (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
13 Wish You Were Here (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
14 Switchboard Susan (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
15 Cracking Up (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
16 I Knew the Bride [When She Used to Rock and Roll] (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
17 Nutted by Reality (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)
18 Heart of the City (Nick Lowe & Paul Carrack)

Given that Lowe and Carrack toured together for about three years, I'm surprised that I've found almost no photos of them together. I did find this one, from 1982. But it was in black and white, so I colorized it.

Beck - Morning Becomes Eclectic, KCRW, Santa Monica, CA, 1995-1996

Just a few minutes ago, I posted an album of Beck's 1993 and 1994 appearances on the KCRW radio show "Morning Becomes Eclectic." While I'm at it, here's his next two appearances on that show, from 1995 and 1996. As with the 1993 and 1994 album, there are some songs here I've put on other stray tracks albums. But I figure some people may appreciate having all the KCRW performances gathered together.

The first seven tracks here are from a performance on January 6, 1995. The remaining songs are from a performance on June 19, 1996. During this time, he was a remarkably prolific songwriter. But in my opinion, he didn't do a good job of putting those songs on albums. Interestingly, his very popular album "Odelay" was released on June 18, 1996, just one day before his second performance here. But you'd never know that because he played none of the "Odelay" songs here, although "Strange Invitation" is a renamed, very different acoustic version of the "Odelay" song "Jack-Ass."

"Odelay" is a very rocking album, with lots of rap and funk influences. But for these two performances he was mostly in acoustic mode. In fact, some of the songs here are covers of old blues or country songs, like "Devil Got My Woman," "John the Revelator," "Grinnin' in Your Face," and "Waitin' for a Train" that are drastically different from his "Odelay" style. Some of the originals he did here were never officially released. "Cancelled Check" would later appear on his 1998 album "Mutations" done in a different style.

This album is 32 minutes long.

01 Devil Got My Woman (Beck)
02 Woe on Me [Feel the Strain of Sorrow Never Ceasing] (Beck)
03 Cancelled Check (Beck)
04 Curses (Beck)
05 John the Revelator (Beck)
06 Spirits (Beck)
07 Grinnin' in Your Face [Piano Version] [Edit] (Beck)
08 Somewhere Far Along (Beck)
09 Two Bit Cares (Beck)
10 Strange Invitation (Beck)
11 Waitin' for a Train (Beck)
12 Until It's Time for You to Go (Beck)

The cover photo of Beck is from a Lollapalooza concert in New York City, on July 29, 1995.

Beck - Morning Becomes Eclectic, KCRW, Santa Monica, CA, 1993-1994

I've posted so many albums of Beck performing for the KCRW "Morning Becomes Eclectic" radio show (with more to come) that I decided I should go back and post the ones he did in the early years of his career. I hadn't done that before, because he played many otherwise unreleased songs on those shows, and I used those on some of the stray tracks albums I've made. But I figure it won't be the end of the world if I have the same performance on two albums every now and then.

Beck performed on this show five times between 1993 and 1996, generally in acoustic mode. For one of those shows, he apparently only did the song "Whiskeyfaced, Radioactive, Blowdryin' Lady," on September 13, 1993. I can't find that anywhere, so if you have it please pass it on and I'll add it in. I've divided the other shows into two albums.

The first seven tracks here are from a July 23, 1993 show. His single "Loser" had been released in March 1993, and had been slowly gaining enough traction for him to get an appearance on a radio show like this. But it wouldn't be until 1994 when it really caught fire and made it to the Top Ten in the U.S. I cut out all of the interview dialogue between songs for all these shows. However, this version of "Loser" was preceded by a recording of Woody Guthrie talking that Beck had selected to lead into the song, so I kept that.

The remaining tracks are from a show on March 1, 1994. One more song was played, "Beercan." But that actually was just an airing of the record version, and the KCRW DJ talked over much of it before cutting it off halfway, due to the end of the radio show, so I didn't include that. What is included was all played live in the studio, though there were some backing tracks in some cases, and one song, "Howling Wolves," had been prerecorded earlier that day.

This album is 46 minutes long.

01 Loser Intro- Woody Guthrie Speaking (Beck)
02 Loser (Beck)
03 Mexico (Beck)
04 Death Is Coming to Get You (Beck)
05 Whimsical Actress (Beck)
06 Pay No Mind [Snoozer] (Beck)
07 MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack (Beck)
08 Bogusflow (Beck)
09 Dead Man with No Heart (Beck)
10 Hard to Compete (Beck)
11 Howling Wolves (Beck)
12 It's All in Your Mind (Beck)
13 Totally Confused [Edit] (Beck)
14 It's All Gonna Come to Be (Beck)

https://www.upload.ee/files/15532327/BeckH_1993-1994_MornngBcomesEclectcKCRStdiosSntaMonicaCA__1993-1994_atse.zip.html

The cover photo is from one of Beck's appearances in the KCRW studios in the 1990's. I'm pretty sure it's from either the 1993 or 1994 shows, due to his changing fashion sense in those years. The photo was in black and white, but I used the Palette program to colorize it, then made some further changes to get the colors more to my liking.

Richard Thompson - What We Did on Our Holidays - Home Concert, Montclair, NJ, 12-16-2020

I have a Richard Thompson Christmas-themed home concert from 2020 that I only discovered a few days ago. It seems crazy to post that in August, the exact opposite of the Christmas season, but I want to post it now because otherwise I'm liable to forget come December. Then it occurred to me, "Hey, having Trump prosecuted for the January 6th insurrection is like Christmas coming early, so this is good timing after all."

Anyway, if that excuse doesn't work for you, consider that it's not really that much of a Christmas-themed album in the first place. Thompson did give the home concert the title "What We Did on Our Holidays" - a clever reference to the title of a 1969 Fairport Convention album - and he did play a few Christmas-themed songs: "Father Christmas" by the Kinks, "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses, "Blue Christmas" by Elvis Presley, a rockabilly version of "Winter Wonderland," and his own "The Wrong Present." But for the 13 other songs, there's little to no Christmas connection. Still, it's a fun bunch of songs, which some rarely played tunes included.

As with his other home concerts, this was done in the solo acoustic format, except his partner Zara Phillips added harmony vocals to a bunch of the songs. The sound quality is excellent, with no problems at all. I did cut out a little bit of dead air between songs, such as guitar tuning, but not much.

Also, in recent years, Thompson has developed a very annoying habit of loudly and frequently clearing his throat or coughing. That happened between every single song here, though thankfully never during any of the songs. I tried to edit out all such noises. Perhaps I missed one or two, but I got nearly all of them, at least.

This album is an hour and 21 minutes long.

Oh, and by the way, if you're a Trump supporter, what the heck are you doing listening to Richard Thompson? He even wrote an anti-Trump song in 2014, "Fergus Laing," before Trump started his run for president. I put that on my "Rock Trump Out" compilation, which you can find here:

Ron Sexsmith Request

I'm working with someone else to put together a series of albums of non-album tracks by singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith. It's hard going because he's done a ton of stuff (I have enough for five albums so far), yet he's not that well known. In particular, he's released extra songs on many of the Japanese versions of his albums, but only in Japan, and we can't find them anywhere.

Here's what we're still looking for:

FROM:  RETRIEVER (2004)
All Too Much

FROM:    EXIT STRATEGY of the SOUL (2008)
Too Good to Be True
Seems to Me (also an iTunes bonus track)

FROM:    LONG PLAYER LATE BLOOMER (2011)
Wooden Toys
Chambermaid
Next Time
Speaking with the Angel (Acoustic)
Love Shines (Acoustic)

FROM:    FOREVER ENDEAVOUR (2013)
Don't Be Scared
Wee Small Hours

FROM:     CAROUSEL ONE (2015)
Secret Heart (Gavin Brown X Session)
Lebanon, Tennessee (Gavin Brown X Session)

FROM:   THE LAST RIDER (2017)

FROM:   HERMITAGE (2020)
Kick It Down the Road

FROM:  THE VIVIAN LINE (2023)

If you have any of these and are willing to share, please let me know. Thanks.

Lone Justice - BBC In Concert, Town and Country Club, London, Britain, 11-6-1986

I have to start this off with a request. As far as I know, this is the only BBC concert played by Maria McKee's 1980s band Lone Justice. (In her later solo career, she did two BBC concerts, one in 1991 and the other in 1993.)

This was a good time for a BBC concert, because Lone Justice only released two studio albums, and this took place shortly after the release of the second one. The band broke up a few months later.

Given this was recorded by the BBC, I was surprised that the lead vocals were too low. Luckily, that's the one editing trick I've been doing a lot lately: I used the UVR5 audio editing program to boost the lead vocals relative to the instruments. I think it sounds a lot better now.

There are two extra songs at the end. In 1985, Lone Justice played those two songs for the BBC TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test." Since of them is probably my favorite Lone Justice song, "Ways to Be Wicked," I decided to include them, even though there was no applauding audience. It was a failed A-side. In a better world, that would have been a big hit. (It was also written by Tom Petty.) The other song, "Sweet, Sweet Baby (I’m Falling)," also was a failed A-side. That one appeared in the BBC concert as the second track. But I also really like that song, so I don't mind having two versions.

This album is an hour and five minutes long. The 1986 concert without the last two songs is 58 minutes long.

01 Wait 'til We Get Home (Lone Justice)
02 Sweet, Sweet Baby [I’m Falling] (Lone Justice)

Liz Phair - Joe's Pub, New York City, 8-1-2005

I recently posted a Liz Phair stray tracks album. That reminded me of this acoustic concert. It's one of my favorite recordings by her. If you think she was a flash in the pan with her 1993 album "Exile in Guyville," hopefully this will correct that notion.

Liz Phair's recording career started strong, but her 2003 album "Liz Phair" was criticized for having a "sell out" pop sound. The same was said of her 2005 album "Somebody's Miracle." This concert took place a couple of months before the release of "Somebody's Miracle," and prominently features songs from that and "Liz Phair." But in my opinion those songs sound great in the context of this concert. Since this is an acoustic concert, with just a second guitarist backing her up, those songs are totally transformed. Whatever problems those albums had must have been with over-production issues

It helps that the sound quality is fantastic. This is a soundboard, and probably the best recorded of all of her concert recordings (especially since she's never released an official live album). So if you're a Liz Phair fan, this is a must-have.

This album is 56 minutes long. You can hear in her banter that she wanted to play longer, but she had to obey some kind of curfew time limit.

Sheryl Crow - Home Again - Non-Album Tracks (2012-2013)

It feels like I'm never going to finish posting all of Sheryl Crow's stray tracks material. This is the sixteenth such album I've posted, and there are still five more to go as I write this in 2023.

Five of the songs here are unreleased. But they generally sound very good. Two of them, "Leaning in a New Direction" and "Deep as It Is Wide," are studio tracks. "Walk on By" was performed at the White House for a TV show, so its sound is fine. The other two, "Up Around the Bend" and "Rock and Roll," are from concert bootlegs and sound a bit rougher. I did some extra editing on those two to help with the sound, which is why they have "[Edit]" in their titles.

Regarding the editing of "Leaning in a New Direction," it needed a lot of work. It's a nice song that I could imagine as a hit, so it's very surprising that it remains unreleased. I have an entire blog post explaining what I did to it, if you're interested:

Albums That Should Exist: Sheryl Crow - Leaning in a New Direction (Edited Song) (2013)

As for the released tracks, they're the usual type for this sort of album. There are three bonus tracks, three songs from soundtracks, and two songs from other artist's albums.

This album is 50 minutes long.

01 The World You Make (Sheryl Crow)
02 Will You Love Me Tomorrow (Rita Wilson & Sheryl Crow)
03 Walk On By (Sheryl Crow)
04 Up Around the Bend [Edit] (Sheryl Crow & Kid Rock)
05 Leaning in a New Direction [Edit] (Sheryl Crow)

09 Far Away Places (Willie Nelson & Sheryl Crow)
10 Jukin' (Sheryl Crow)
11 Home Again (Sheryl Crow, Dave Alvin, Phil Alvin & Taj Mahal)

I got tired of just posting photos of Sheryl Crow for her album covers. So I searched for artwork related to her, and found a nice poster. I don't know when it's from or who made it. I had to crop it to get the rectangular shape to fix into a square space, and I added the text.

Beck - Morning Becomes Eclectic, Apogee Studios, Santa Monica, CA, 4-16-2014

Here's yet another one of Beck's performances for the KCRW radio show "Morning Becomes Eclectic." There are at least two more coming after this.

According to setlist.fm, Beck actually played a concert of 15 songs in front of an audience. But for whatever reason, KCRW only played seven of them on the radio. If anyone has any of the other songs, please let me know and I'll add them in.

Beck was there to promote his 2014 album "Morning Phase." All the songs except "Soldier Jane" and "Lost Cause" come from that album.

This album is pretty short. But as I've said before, there aren't a lot of soundboard level live recordings of him. These KCRW shows have him performing his songs with the highest sound quality.
