Nick Drake - Last Session - Non-Album Tracks (1974)

In 1974, two years after the release of "Pink Moon," Nick Drake returned to the recording studio to record another album. Unfortunately, he died before the album was completed.

Four of the songs were released in 1979. Since then, a few other things have come out  Most importantly is "Tow the Line," a fifth song sung by him, officially released in 2004. Then there's an unreleased instrumental from 1972 ("Plaisir d'Amour") which I'm including here because I don't want to touch the great Pink Moon album. Finally, there's another unreleased instrumental from 1974 that's said to be him just doodling around while testing the recording o equipment. It's nice, but very repetitive, so I edited it down some to make it more listenable.

When you put all that together, you're left with less than 20 minutes of music. That makes it half of an album. Normally, I would try to put it with something else to make for a longer listen, but I think in this case it's good if it stands on its own, to better understand his state of mind shortly before his death. He did additional takes of some of these songs in 1974, but I'm going to put them on a different album so as to not make this one too repetitive, since they are very similar.

What a loss, that he was never able to finish this off and then go on to live a long life with a lot more music to share with the world.

Regarding the cover, there are no photos of him that I know of from the last three years of his life. And there are very few color photos of him at all - I guess people like the black and white mood to help make him look serious and sad. I used a color photo of him looking out over London and the River Thames around 1970 - looking serious and sad.

    1. I checked the Nick Drake links and they're all still working. If you're having trouble with Zippyshare, please grab the files using Soulseek. It's free and easy to use, and all the albums I post here are there as well.

    1. Although... comparing the contents, I think you have pretty much covered these tracks but there may be an odd item of interest.

Have you heard these quality Peel Sessions?

  3. Nick wrote the title as 'Voices' in his own hand, not 'Voice From The Mountain' which was given as the title when it was first released on the Time Of No Reply collection in 1986. It was corrected to Voices for the officially released Made To Love Magic compilation in 2004.

The 5 main songs here can be seen written by Nick in what looks like a potential album side, with 5 other titles written by him (complete with lyrics) which seems to be the other side of the unfinished fourth album, fully realised.

    1. Interesting. I suppose I should fix that song title then. What are the other five song titles for that proposed album?

    2. I would have written them but need to find the book .. lyrics were just a few lines each so I will post them as well when I find it.
Thanks for this though, Plaisir d'Amour is sublime even being so short I had never heard it before.

    3. Extract:

"In 2001, shortly after taking on the management of Nick Drake's estate, Cally Callomon set about putting the family archives into some sort of order and found a sheet of paper in Nick's handwriting which cast new light on his possible plans for the songs that he had recently recorded. Listed with ticks beside them, possibly to denote the fact that they had been recorded, were the five final songs, 'Voices', 'Black Eyed Dog', 'Rider On The Wheel', 'Hanging On A Star', and 'Tow The Line'. Then, separated as if to denote a different group - seemingly the second side of a record - are five more titles: 'Saw You On A Starship', 'Old Fairytale', 'Even Now', 'On This Day', and 'Long Way To Town'.

Along with these, Callomon discovered lyrics corresponding to the hitherto unknown titles, as well as two more that didn't make the track listing."

The other titles are 'Sing A Song', and 'Paid Brain'. Most of the songs have handwritten and typewritten copies of the lyrics, including corrections, again suggesting final versions and not mere sketches or unfinished works.

    4. Wow, thanks! Really interesting stuff. That's seven songs that he never recorded before he died. What a loss. I've never heard of any of those.

    5. Old Fairytale

You open the door, don't you make a sound,
The light come in, you spread it all around,
And you cast your spell right across the ground,
      It's an old fairytale.

The days go by, you're looking for a theme,
The night come down you go to bed to dream,
While the people there they change from blue to green,
      It's an old fairytale.

So call the tune, don't you call for me,
What you see is a mystery,
You can see it has to be
      An old fairytale.

You open the door don't you make a sound,
The light come in you spread it all around,
And you cast your spell right across the ground,
      It's an old fairytale

    6. Even Now

You can tell me that you're coming through,
I can tell you that I'm changing too, won't you see me through,
      We can seek you out,
      We can scream and shout,
      Even now, even now.

Even at the point of no return,
We can sit and watch our bridges burn, don't you see 'em turn,
      We can follow down,
      All around the town,
      Even now, even now

And if you're losing what you started with,
Don't you grieve for what you're parted with, broken-hearted with,
      You can bring it through,
      Maybe make it new,
      Even now, even now.

You can tell me that you're pulling through,
I can tell you that it's happening too, won't you see it through,
      We can fall about,
And we can seek you out
      Even now, even now.

    7. On This Day

      'A' train just don't run,
      Good time just won't come,
On this day, on this day.

      New sun just don't shine,
      New love just ain't mine,
This old time, this old time.

      New day just won't dawn,
      New love just ain't born,
On this day, on this day.

See you coming, I know the score
And I know that you know it too,
See you going, ask you for more
'Cos I know that you want it too,
See you coming, I can't be beat
And I tell you it's for real,
See you going, bring on the heat
Won't you tell me how you feel.

      'A' train just don't run,
      Good time just won't come
On this day, on this day.

    8. Long Way To Town

Well I don't wish to deceive you more,
      And I don't wish to call you down;
And I don't wish to deny my name,
But it's a long long way to town.
A long long way to town, to town,
A long long way to town.

  4. Sing A Song

Sing a song, sing it low,
Sing a song, make it slow,
Sing a song, let it show,
I am yours from now on.
All new games we can play,
All new words we can say,
    All new love won't betray,
I am yours from now on.
    You are my treasure-trove,
    You are my stars above,
Hold on tight, let me prove,
I am yours from now on.

  5. Paid Brain

Well they's paying him in gold,
And they's paying him in smiles,
And they's payin for his brain,
    And they's payin for his wiles;
    He's a paid brain,
Lord say he should be so,
    Yes he's a paid brain
And the Lord say he should be so.
