Various Artists - Gershwin Prize for Popular Song Honoring Paul McCartney, White House, Washington, DC, 6-2-2010

I've recently discovered the annual "Gershwin Prize for Popular Song" tribute concerts. Here's probably the best known one, because it honors arguably the most successful songwriter of all time, Paul McCartney.

This concert happened to take place during the presidency of Barack Obama. That was lucky, because he took more of a hands-on approach to concerts like this. He hosted this at the White House and gave McCartney's induction speech. I've seen from other Gershwin Prize concerts that I've found that Obama was the only president to get directly involved in them.

The concert started with a song by McCartney. Then a bunch of musical stars played his songs, with a brief stand-up routine by Jerry Seinfeld included in there. Then McCartney took the stage again. He performed "Ebony and Ivory" with Stevie Wonder, just as they did on the original version in 1981. Apparently, that was the first time McCartney had played that song since 1991. After an induction speech by Obama, McCartney finished the concert with a short set of songs.

This album remains unreleased. The sound quality is excellent. I only had one problem. This concert was broadcast on TV. Near the end of "Hey Jude," there was a voiceover near the end of song, briefly mentioning the next TV show. In order to get rid of it, I had to edit out one round of "na na's," which is why that song has "[Edit]" in its title.

By the way, I stumbled across a Time Magazine article about this concern from way back then. It concluded with the line, "The White House has never hosted a cooler evening." Here's the link if you want to read the whole thing:

Ron Sexsmith - Reasons to Believe, Volume 8: 2016-2023

Back in early 2024, I started posting this series of non-album tracks by Ron Sexsmith. This was the idea of a musical associate, Pete the Greek, and I wouldn't have done it without his instigation and continual help. Finally, after a year and a half, the series comes to an end with this eighth volume. (Or at least it's ending until Sexsmith puts out another albums' worth of stray tracks, but that could take years.)

This album is a fairly even split between released and unreleased songs. The released ones are tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10 and 11. One of those, "Flowers All Along the Pathway," is a bonus track from the Sexsmith album "The Vivian Line." Most of the rest are appearances on albums by other musical acts, or on various artists compilations.

That leaves the unreleased songs, which are the remaining six. These are all from concerts, home concerts, or radio shows. For the ones that had audience applause, I got rid of that using the MVSEP program to help them fit in with the other songs without applause.

Thanks again to Pete the Greek for all his help with this series, and sorry it took so long to post it all.

This album is 49 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Twilight of the Season - Hidden Cameras with Ron Sexsmith
02 Don't Make Promises - Tim Hardin
03 Stay Loose - Gordon Lightfoot
04 Sorrow Town - Jamie Lawson & Ron Sexsmith
05 Suzanne - Leonard Cohen
06 Driving Home for Christmas - Chris Rea

08 If Not for You - Bob Dylan
09 The Faith - Leonard Cohen
10 Flowers All Along the Pathway - Ron Sexsmith
11 Granddad's Song - SunYears
12 I'll Never Fall in Love Again - Dionne Warwick
13 Dirty Life and Times - Warren Zevon
14 You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon

Here's the usual song list:

01 Twilight of the Season (Hidden Cameras with Ron Sexsmith)
02 Don't Make Promises (Hidden Cameras with Ron Sexsmith)

Sheryl Crow - Nobody Told Me - Non-Album Tracks (2020-2022)

It's time for another stray tracks album from Sheryl Crow. Actually, I only need another song or two and I'll have enough to get caught up to present day. So I hope that'll happen soon.

After a 2019 album, "Threads," Crow said she was done with putting out albums and would switch to releasing singles instead. She hasn't entirely kept to that, since she released another album in 2024. But she has released fewer albums than before, and she also has released some songs only on singles. There are three single A-sides here, tracks 3, 9, and 10. Additionally, "Still the Same" is another original, released on a compilation album. Tracks 4, 5, 7, and 11 are from appearances on albums by other musical acts.

That just leaves the unreleased songs. There are four of those, tracks 1, 2, 6, and 8. The first three were live but without an audience, because this was during the Covid pandemic, when home concerts were happening instead of concerts in front of crowds. For the tracks with audience noise (tracks 4 and 8), I removed the cheering with the MVSEP program so it would fit in with the studio tracks.

This album is 45 minutes long.

01 Nobody Told Me (Sheryl Crow)
02 You Don't Know How It Feels (Sheryl Crow)
03 In the End (Sheryl Crow)

08 Rocket Man [I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time] (Brandi Carlile & Sheryl Crow)
09 Circles (Sheryl Crow)

11 Still the Same (Sheryl Crow)

For the cover art, I decided to do something different than the usual photo of Crow. I did an Internet search for Sheryl Crow art, and came up with this nice image. I don't know who made it.

Brandi Carlile & Elton John - An Evening with Elton John & Brandi Carlile, Palladium Theatre, London, Britain, 3-26-2025

I have to give kudos to Elton John for not resting on his many laurels despite being 78 years old as I write this in 2025. This year, he has a duet album with Brandi Carlile, called "Who Believes in Angels?" All the songs on it were jointly written by Carlile, John, John's songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, and the album's producer Andrew Watt. It's a pretty solid album in my opinion, and it's gotten good reviews. To promote the album, John and Carlile put on a concert which was broadcast on TV, which I'm posting here.

This is a good compliment to that new album, because only four of the songs are from the album (tracks 3, 7, 13, and 15), while the others are the best known songs from John's and Carlile's earlier albums. More specifically, there are five covers of classic John songs and one Carlile song ("The Joke"), plus there's a cover of the country classic "Crazy." Carlile has been a huge fan of John's music for her whole career, so I'm sure she relished the opportunity to sing his songs with the man himself.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 51 minutes long.

01 I'm Still Standing (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
02 talk (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
03 Who Believes in Angels (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
04 Your Song (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
05 talk (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
06 The Joke (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
07 Swing for the Fences (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
08 Tiny Dancer (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
09 talk (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
10 Crazy (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
11 Bennie and the Jets (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
12 talk (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
13 You without Me (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
14 Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)

Various Artists - Gershwin Prize for Popular Song Honoring Willie Nelson, D.A.R. Constitution Hall, Washington, DC, 11-18-2015

Back in 2023, I posted a Joni Mitchell tribute concert. You can find that here:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2023/04/various-artists-joni-mitchell-gershwin.html

The reason I mention that off the bat is because it turns out that was a "Gershwin Prize for Popular Song" tribute concert, and I've found a few more of them. Here's one from 2015, honoring Willie Nelson. (By the way, I just redid the cover art of the Joni Mitchell one, so all of the ones I post will have the same font and so forth.)

This award is actually bestowed by a branch of the U.S. government, the Library of Congress. It was first awarded in 2007. It's been an annual thing since then, although four years were skipped. (One skip was due to the Covid pandemic, in 2021. I don't know why there weren't awards ceremonies in 2007, 2012, and 2017.)

Here's the Wikipedia page about the prize:

Gershwin Prize - Wikipedia

Just in the past few days, I've managed to find several more of these concerts, and I plan to post all of them here soon.

These are the ones I've found so far:

2007 Paul Simon
2009 Stevie Wonder
2010 Paul McCartney
2012 Burt Bacharach & Hal David
2014 Billy Joel
2015 Willie Nelson (here)
2020 Garth Brooks
2022 Lionel Richie
2023 Joni Mitchell (posted already)
2024 Elton John & Bernie Taupin

Meanwhile, here are the ones I can't find:
2013 Carole King
2016 Smokey Robinson
2017 Tony Bennett
2019 Gloria & Emilio Estefan

I'm calling on one of you out there to please help me find the rest. It seems videos of these other ones are available, via the PBS website. For instance, here's the Lionel Richie one:

Gershwin Prize | Lionel Richie: Gershwin Prize | Season 2022 | Episode 1 | PBS

However, to be able to watch them, one needs to pay for the KPBS Passport. So if anyone has that, and can record the audio and/or video of it and share that with me, then I'll be able to post the other ones as well. It would be a share if those remain out of reach, especially the Carole King, and Smokey Robinson ones.

Speaking of remaining out of reach, this Willie Nelson was very hard to find. For instance, it's not on YouTube, and everything like this is on YouTube. But I was able to find a single mp3 file of the entire concert. Then I broke it up into mp3s for each song.

One interesting thing about this concert, compared to the other Gershwin Prize concerts I've found so far, is that there weren't that many guest stars, but many of the guest stars got to perform two songs instead of one. For instance, that was the case with Neil Young, Paul Simon, and Alison Kraus. And in the cases of Neil Young and Paul Simon, I thought I'd seen just about every unique songs they've performed, but I've never seen any recordings or mentions of these.

However, the big star of the show, naturally, was Willie Nelson himself. He performed four songs at the end, including a duet with Cyndi Lauper.

By the way, if you look at the song list, you may wonder who "David Mao" is. He was the Librarian of Congress at the time. I've noticed that in all these concerts, the person in that position gets to give the introductory speech to the inductee. That must be an interesting perk for that government job.

Everything here is officially unreleased, but the sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and ten minutes long.

The Beach Boys and Friends - 25 Years Together, Waikiki Shell, Honolulu, HI, 12-12-1986

Here's a really interesting Beach Boys concert, featuring lots of special guest stars. It was a TV special filmed in Waikiki Beach in Hawaii to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the formation of the band, back in 1961. The Beach Boys stayed on stage the entire time. Often they performed their own songs, but sometimes they were the backing band for: Ray Charles, Gloria Loring, Glen Campbell, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the Everly Brothers, Jeffrey Osborne, Belinda Carlisle, and Three Dog Night. That's a pretty impressive list.

I happened to stumble across a video of this concert on YouTube. I converted that to an audio file and cut it into mp3s. While doing so, I deliberately cut out some things. For instance, there were some long talking segments by actor Patrick Duffy in which he talked extensively about the history of the Beach Boys. It wasn't terrible, but it didn't have relistening value, so I axed it. I also cut out a few other little things, like some really bad jokes or cheesy comments made by the Beach Boys between songs.

I gotta say, I put a lot of effort into making this a better listen. One big problem was there was a constant noise coming from the crowd all the time, through every song. Probably, microphones were stuck in the crowd to capture that audience noise in order to supposedly increase the excitement level. Or some of it could have been added in later. That has happened even to officially released live albums occasionally. Regardless, I used the MVSEP to get rid of most of the crowd noise, except for the bits you'd expect at the starts and ends of the songs. The sonic difference was dramatic, like suddenly being able to hear after taking ear muffs off.

The last two songs have "[Edit]" in their titles due to extra editing on them. For "The Spirit of Rock and Roll," an announcer came on near the end of the song and talked over it. Luckily, that didn't last too long, and I was able to patch it by bringing in a section from elsewhere in the song. "Good Vibrations" was much more difficult. For some stupid reason, the song was repeatedly interrupted by brief comments made by random people, saying things like "Happy anniversary to the Beach Boys!" These comments clearly were filmed on the beach at a different time and spliced into the footage. This happened about ten times, through random points in the song. Worse, the volume of the song itself was briefly turned way down, ruining the rhythm. I found a different live version of the song from the 1980s and patched in bits of that, or patched in sections from elsewhere in the same version. It was a real pain in the ass to fix, but all those dumb comments are gone now.

I think this is a really interesting concert, a lot better than what I'd expected from the Beach Boys at this point in their career. The main negative is that the band tried to cram in too many songs for the limited time they had for their TV special. So many of the songs are short versions, sometimes in medleys. There's even a couple that are a minute or less. But there are a lot of plus sides. One nice thing is that Brian Wilson usually didn't tour with the band, but he was here and involved. In fact, he looked as healthy and fit as he ever did, after some rough years in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

And while the Beach Boys mostly played their expected classics, there was a couple of really nice surprises. One was a version of "Heaven" near the end of the concert. This was released on a Carl Wilson solo album and never officially done by the Beach Boys. The other one that is even more interesting is the closing song, "The Spirit of Rock and Roll." At the time, Brian Wilson was working on his first solo album. But there were many false starts before the album, simply called "Brian Wilson," was released in 1988. At one point, there was nearly enough material for an album to be released, only for it to be scrapped and most of the songs discarded. Some of this later became a popular bootleg called "Sweet Insanity." "The Spirit of Rock and Roll" was one of those discarded songs. So it's interesting that it was not only chosen for inclusion in this special, but it was the finale. This appears to be the ONLY time the song was ever performed by the Beach Boys, as opposed to Brian Wilson solo.

But maybe the most interesting thing of all were the special guests, the vast majority of whom have stood the test of time. Gloria Loring is better known as an actress than a singer, but she had a good voice and had a big hit in 1986 with "Friends and Lovers," which she sang here. Other than that though, the guests mostly sang Beach Boys songs, while being backed by the actual Beach Boys on backing vocals and instruments. For instance, not only did the back up Ray Charles singing and playing keyboards on "Sail On, Sailor," but Charles was the one playing the prominent keyboard part in the "Good Vibrations" finale. I particularly liked hearing Belinda Carlisle singing a Beach Boys song as well as a soul classic.

Everything here is unreleased, I believe. The sound quality is very good, though not great.

This album is an hour and ten minutes long.

I had a hard time finding a good cover photo by taking a screenshot from a video. If I used a long distance shot showing many people, it was too low-res and blurry. Various Artists - Let's Go Crazy: A Grammy Salute to Prince, Convention Center, Los Angeles, CA, 1-28-2020

A couple of days ago, I posted a Grammy tribute to Paul Simon in 2022. That's not the only such Grammy tribute, although they haven't always happened yearly. Here's one from 2020, paying tribute to Prince, who died in 2016.

In the Paul Simon tribute, there was a lot of talking between songs. But in this one, this is almost no banter whatsoever. It's possible some of that was cut out of the version I found, since even the applause at the ends of songs was usually brutally cut short after just a second or two. To make this a better flowing listen, I usually patched in more applause between songs, to give more breathing room before the next song began.

There are lots of interesting versions of Prince's most famous songs here, often done by big name stars. Since most of Prince's songs are upbeat and funky, and there's no banter between songs, this plays like a party album.

Everything here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and seven minutes long.

Brandi Carlile - Cover Songs, Volume 9: 2022-2023

A couple of days ago, I posted a Brandi Carlile set from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival. That reminded me that I had fallen behind posting cover song albums from her. So I searched the Internet and found enough material for this album. Also, I'm only a couple of songs short for the next one, so hopefully that'll happen soon.

Also, before I talk about the content on this album, note that in recent days I went through all of the earlier albums in this cover songs series and got rid of the applause on the songs that had applause, using the MVSEP program. So you might want to redownload those, because that often makes the songs sound clearer, especially in cases where there's a steady stream of audience noise through the songs.

Furthermore, I recently went through all the Dusty Springfield "On TV and Radio" albums, and used the same technique to get rid of the audience noise there as well. That was a big project, because there are 12 of those albums. And while I was at it, I redid most of the album covers using the Krea AI program, including some outside of that series. So you might want to redownload those as well.

Now, let's turn to the content of this album. A few of the songs here are officially released. They generally come from Carlile's appearances on the albums of other musical acts, and they are covers of songs first done by those acts. Those are "How" by Marcus Mumford and Brandi Carlile (which actually is cowritten by Carlile), "You're Gonna Go Far" by Noah Kahan, "Thousand Miles" by Miley Cyrus, and "Dear Insecurity" by Brandy Clark. The only other released song is "Closer to Fine," done for the 2023 "Barbie" movie.

The rest all are unreleased. All of those come from concerts, and are versions of famous songs. For those, I used the MVSEP program to get rid of as much of the crowd noise as possible, so the live tracks would fit in with the studio ones.

This album is 48 minutes long.

Here are the original artists for each song:

01 Coat of Many Colors - Dolly Parton
02 How - Marcus Mumford & Brandi Carlile
03 Every Day Is a Winding Road - Sheryl Crow
04 You're Gonna Go Far - Noah Kahan
05 She's Got You - Patsy Cline
06 Thousand Miles - Miley Cyrus
07 In My Room - Beach Boys
08 Closer to Fine - Indigo Girls
09 God Only Knows - Beach Boys
10 Dear Insecurity - Brandy Clark
11 Islands in the Stream - Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton
12 Shine - Joni Mitchell

Here's the usual song list:

01 Coat of Many Colors (Brandi Carlile & Pink)
02 How (Marcus Mumford & Brandi Carlile)
03 Every Day Is a Winding Road (Brandi Carlile & Sheryl Crow)
04 You're Gonna Go Far (Noah Kahan with Brandi Carlile)

Supergrass - BBC In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-27-2025

Finally! The flood of albums from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival ends here. I posted all the sets that got enough votes in the poll I made for this festival, which I think ends up being 21 albums in total. This last one is from the British band Supergrass.

I like Supergrass quite a lot. I've only posted one album from them so far, but I plan on posting more. I already have a bunch of their BBC albums ready to post, though that'll have to wait since I have a very long line of albums to post. But once I do post those, this one will get renamed, to take into account the earlier BBC volumes in the series.

Supergrass were in existence from 1993 to 2010. They broke up for ten years. But since then, they've reunited with all the original members. They've occasionally gone on tour, but they haven't released any new music (at least not yet).

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and six minutes long.

Black Uhuru - BBC In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-29-2025

Here's yet more from the 2025 Glastonbury. This time, it's a set by Jamaican reggae band Black Uhuru.

Black Uhuru has been around since the 1970s, though they've gone through a lot of line-up changes. In 2025, they're a threesome, with only one original member remaining.

Here's their Wikipedia entry:

Kiki Dee - BBC Sessions, Volume 3: Sight and Sound, Golders Green Hippodrome, London, Britain, 2-26-1977

Here is the third and final BBC album for British singer Kiki Dee. Like the second one, this one is a concert.

As I wrote in the second volume in this series, after many years of struggling in the music business, Kiki Dee started having hits in 1973, especially with "Amoureuse" in 1973 and "I've Got the Music in Me" in 1974. But she really hit it big with a duet with Elton John, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," which reached Number One in both the U.S. and Britain in 1976. It seems that was enough for her to get her own BBC concert in early 1977, even though she'd had one in 1975.

In this concert, she did play her two other big hits, but she didn't play "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." Perhaps that was because she didn't have John to duet with.

She ended the concert with a Motown classic, "Loving You Is Sweeter than Ever." At the time, her version of it was unreleased. But she would release a duet version of it with John in 1981.

All the music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

Dee had another hit in 1981 ("Star"), which put her back in the spotlight. I believe that resulted in her getting another BBC concert that year, but I haven't been able to find it. If anyone has it, please share it with me so I can post it here as well.

This album is 52 minutes.

01 Step by Step (Kiki Dee)
02 First Thing in the Morning (Kiki Dee)
03 Sugar on the Floor (Kiki Dee)
04 Amoureuse (Kiki Dee)
05 Chicago (Kiki Dee)
06 Night Hours (Kiki Dee)
07 talk (Kiki Dee)
08 Loving and Free (Kiki Dee)
09 You Need Help (Kiki Dee)

Nile Rodgers & Chic - BBC In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-29-2025

Here's another album from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival. This time, it's Nile Rodgers and Chic.

I already posted two albums in my Covered series highlighting the songwriting of Nile Rodgers (and his now-deceased songwriting partner Bernard Edwards). So you can see from that that I already admire Rodgers' musical talent. But most of all, this is a fun listen that makes you want to get up and dance.

It's kind of redundant to bill this as "Nile Rodgers and Chic," since Rodgers was the main musical force in the band Chic ever since the 1970s. Probably this is credited that way for greater name recognition. Most of the songs are written or co-written by Rodgers, though a few, like the ones made famous by David Bowie and Madonna, were technically only produced by him (though I would strongly suspect he did enough to share songwriting credits on those too).

As usual for this festival, the music is unreleased, and the sound quality is excellent. Also as usual, I converted a video file to audio format, and broke the music into mp3s.

This album is one hour long.

01 Le Freak (Nile Rodgers & Chic)
02 Everybody Dance (Nile Rodgers & Chic)

Amyl & the Sniffers - BBC In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-28-2025

Once again, the flood of posts from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival continues. This time, it's the Australian band Amyl and the Sniffers.

I hate to say it, but here's another musical act from this festival that left me unimpressed. But hey, they won enough votes in the poll I made for the festival, so here they are. Maybe you'll feel differently.

Various Artists - Homeward Bound: A Grammy Salute to the Songs of Paul Simon, Hollywood Pantages Theater, Los Angeles, CA, 4-6-2022

I've recently discovered a bunch of tribute concerts. I find these really interesting, but they seem to often slip through the cracks in terms of being shared bootlegs. So I'm going to try to make posting these a higher priority. Here's a Grammy-related tribute to Paul Simon from 2022. It took place just three days after the annual Grammy Awards ceremony that year, and in the same city, so many of the stars who attended that could attend this one as well.

It goes without saying that Simon is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, so he deserves a tribute like this. In fact, I've found a MusiCares tribute concert from 2001 and a Gershwin Prize tribute concert from 2007 both celebrating his songs that I plan on posting too. Like those, this one features many big stars playing his most beloved songs.

It also features Simon performing a couple of songs of his own at the end of the concert. This is especially significant because he was 80 years old at the time of this concert, and his voice was noticeably weakening with age. He announced a farewell tour in 2018, so this seemed like one of his last public performances. Since then, though, he decided to have one more tour in 2025, with about 20 concerts. Be that as it may, one can hear the change in his voice in this performance. Thankfully, he realized his limitations and had another singer tackle the vocally challenging song "American Tune" while he just played guitar on it.

The music here remains officially unreleased. However, it was broadcast on television, so there are video files of it. I took a high quality version, converted it to audio format, and broke it into mp3s. The sound quality is excellent. I kept most everything, except I cut out some talk from the unnamed female emcee every time there was a commercial break, which happened every few songs. Hopefully this now sounds seamless, without any hints of those commercial breaks.

Some of the banter between songs were little speeches by famous non-musicians, such as Woody Harrelson, Dustin Hoffman, and Oprah Winfrey. Famous rock star Elton John also only talked. In his case, his talk was a video broadcast, so he probably didn't sing as well because he wasn't there in person.

This album is an hour and 24 minutes long.

01 talk (emcee)
02 Kodachrome (Brad Paisley)

Cymande - BBC In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-29-2025

Here's another album from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival. This one is a lesser known but interesting band called Cymande.

I'm so glad that this band got enough votes in the Glastonbury poll I had here. I had liked some of their music, but I'd had no idea they'd still existed in 2025. They are a British band, but many members originally came from different countries in the Caribbean, and that mixture led to an usual musical style. Their Wikipedia article says, "Cymande were noted for an eclectic mix of funk, soul, reggae, rock, African music, calypso, and jazz." They released three well-regarded albums between 1971 and 1974, but then they broke up. However, they regrouped in the 2010s, and released new albums in 2015 and 2025.

Here's their Wikipedia entry, if you want to know more:

The 1975 - BBC In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-27-2025

Here's more from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival. This time, it's the band The 1975.

I hadn't heard their music before listening to this. To be honest, I was underwhelmed. But I'm posting this here since they got enough votes in the poll I made for the festival. Interestingly, a Vice Magazine article called them both "the most hated and most loved band in the world." If you're unfamiliar, give them a listen and see where your reaction falls. They must be doing something right, since they've sold tons of albums, enough to make them one of the main headliners of the festival.

Kiki Dee - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: In Concert, Paris Theatre, London, Britain, 3-22-1975

Here's a second BBC album by British singer Kiki Dee. This one is a concert.

Dee started her singing career in the early 1960s, with her first single being released in 1963. But many years went by, and many singles releases, without her making the charts at all. Finally, in 1973, she had her first hit in Britain, with the song "Amoureuse." Then in late 1974, she had another hit in Britain with "I've Got the Music in Me." It seems that finally was enough success for her to get her own hour-long BBC concert in early 1975.

Actually, it seems there may have been two BBC concerts, with another one taking place about a month earlier. But only a few songs from that one survive, and only one is different from this one ("Water"), so I put that on "Volume 1" in this series.

This album is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 57 minutes long.

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 9: 2010-2018

Yesterday, after posting "BBC Sessions, Volume 10" by Squeeze, it was pointed out to me that I had never posted Volume 9. Oops! I thought for sure that I had, since I had it all ready to go. So here it is now.

I found a couple of BBC concerts Squeeze did during this time period. But to be honest, I was getting a little tired of posting concerts mostly consisting of their old hits. In my opinion, they were still writing good new songs during this time period, and I was more interested in hearing those. So the first seven tracks are from a BBC concert in Newcastle, Britain, in 2010. Tracks 10 to 13 are from the 2016 Glastonbury Festival. Tracks 14 and 15 are from the Biggest Weekend Festival in Perth, Britain, which was broadcast by the BBC, just like the Glastonbury Festival.

So that makes up most of the songs. But there are two others. "Please, Please Me," a cover of the Beatles song, is from a 2013 BBC radio special called "12 Hours to Please Me" that celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' debut album in Britain, "Please, Please Me."

"Cradle to the Grave" is from the Andrew Marr BBC TV show. What's particularly interesting is that the lyrics were changed near the end of the song, just for this version. Here's the new lyrics:

I grew up in social housing
Part of what made Britain great
There are some here who are hell-bent
On the destruction of the welfare state

This seems to be a deliberate snub of David Cameron, prime minister of Britain at the time, who actually was on stage during the performance, because he was another guest on the show! Indeed, as a leader of the right wing Tory party, Cameron took part in that party's destruction of the welfare state that has be steadily and gradually weakening Britain's economy. Kudos to Squeeze to have the balls to sing that right to Cameron's face. Cameron clapped and smiled at the end of the song, probably oblivious about the lyrics.

Everything on this album is unreleased. I used the MVSEP program to remove all the crowd noise, so the songs with cheering fit in with the ones without. There are a couple of lesser known older songs here. But most of the songs are from the band's two albums of new material during this time period, "Cradle to the Grave" in 2015 and "The Knowledge" in 2017.

This album is 47 minutes long.

01 talk (Squeeze)
02 When the Hangover Strikes (Squeeze)
03 talk (Squeeze)
04 It's So Dirty (Squeeze)
05 If It's Love (Squeeze)

The only thing I know about the cover photo is that it was taken in 2015.

Covered: Don Covay: 1961-1994

Here's another lesser known songwriter celebrated in my Covered series. This time, it's Don Covay.

Covay was born in South Carolina in 1936, but spent the latter half of his childhood in Washington, D.C. In 1957, he started out as a chauffeur and opening act for Little Richard. He had dreams of being a famous soul singer, but for years he drifted from record label to record label with poor sales.

His first success came into 1961, writing the song "Pony Time." He own version only reached the lower part of the singles charts. But then Chubby Checker covered it later that year and it went all the way to Number One. That established a pattern: while he kept his own solo career going for decades, other singers usually had much more success with his songs.

In the mid-1965, he was signed to Atlantic Records and associated labels. Atlantic had a relationship with Stax Records, so Covay was able to co-write songs with Steve Cropper and other soul music greats there, like David Porter and Booker T. Jones. For instance, "See-Saw" and "Sookie Sookie" were co-written with Cropper. (I have different versions of both of those songs in my Covered albums for Cropper.)

Probably Covay's most celebrated song is "Chain of Fools." Aretha Franklin had a big hit with it in 1967, but he'd actually written it about 15 years earlier after seeing a chain gang of prisoners working by the side of a road. Rolling Stone Magazine put it on their list of the top 500 songs of all time.

He was the instigator being the brief soul supergroup "Soul Clan," consisting of himself, Solomon Burke, Joe Tex, Ben E. King & Arthur Conley. He wrote the band's one hit single. However, that was just a one-off. After that, his career declined for a few years. But he had a minor revival with a few hits in the early 1970s. I've included one of those as the only song here credited just to him, "I Was Checkin' Out, She Was Checkin' In."

But musical tastes were quickly changing in the late 1970s, with the rise of disco, punk, and new wave. After a few years of declining sales, Covay quit the music business altogether. But he had some later revivals. For instance, in 2000, he put out his first new album in over 20 years, "Adlib," filled with famous guest star appearances. He died of a stroke in 2015 at the age of 78.

I tried when I could to use the original hit versions. But some of these were never hits, just songs that I thought were worthy of inclusion. And I did occasionally avoid the hit versions for various reasons. For instance, I only wanted one song mainly sung by Covay, so I used the Rolling Stones version of "Mercy, Mercy" when in fact Covay had a hit with it in 1964.

Here's his Wikipedia entry:

Brandi Carlile - BBC In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-28-2025

Here we go with another album from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival. This time, it's singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile.

I have posted many a Brandi Carlile album, and there's no denying her vocal talent. So it's easy for me to give this a thumbs-up. She mostly performed her own songs, but she also did two covers she's never released on record, "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Woodstock."

Everything here is unreleased. As I usually did for this festival, I converted video to audio and broke the music into mp3s.

Olivia Rodrigo - BBC In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-29-2025

Here's more from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival. I'm trying to post a couple of these a day until I'm all done. This time, it's Olivia Rodrigo.

In the last couple of decades, there have been a lots of young and beautiful female singers who are style over substance. They've got lots of charisma, but they often can't sing well without the help of Autotune, and they have a teams songwriters to write all their songs. Olivia Rodrigo is different. I realized she's actually a really good singer when I stumbled across a video of her singing "You're So Vain," which you can see here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2veI5qnKxo

And she actually writes her songs, as you can tell by looking at the credits on her albums. Incredibly, the average number of co-writers on hit songs these days is eight or nine. But she writes songs by herself or just one co-writer. Despite being only 22 years old at the time of this concert, she's already so big that she was one of the top headliners for the festival. So kudos to her.

Anyway, if you want to know more about her, here's her Wikipedia page:

By the way, this set has a prominent guest star, Robert Smith of the Cure. He dueted with her on two famous Cure songs.

Everything here is unreleased. As I usually did for this festival, I found a high-quality video file, converted it to audio, and broke it into mp3s.

This album is an hour and 25 minutes long.

Kiki Dee - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: 1967-1981

If you've been following this blog for a while, you maybe be aware that I have an anonymous musical friend who has been sending me "Top of the Pops" BBC radio recordings that usually are not in public circulation at all. He sent me some of those for British singer Kiki Dee. That inspired me to make this album.

The Top of the Pops recordings mentioned above make up the first three tracks, all from 1967. They also make up tracks 9 and 10, from 1973, and tracks 11, 12, and 13, from 1974. By 1973, that radio show usually just played the recorded versions, and it was getting increasingly rare for them to play unique versions recorded just for the show. But I double checked these 1973 and 1974 and confirmed they all are unique.

By the way, a few of these Top of the Pops songs have "[Edit]" in their titles. That was due to the usual problem of BBC DJ Brian Matthew talking over parts of the song. As usual, I fixed that with the help of the UVR5 program.

Put together, all those Top of the Pops recordings only make up 27 minutes of music, which would make for a very short album. So I went looking for other BBC performances she did. I found some stray things here and there, mostly from BBC TV shows. Tracks 4, 5 and 6 are from "Scott," a 1968 TV show hosted by singer Scott Walker. Tracks 7 and 8 are from different TV shows in 1971. Tracks 16 and 17 are from a 1980 show, and track 18 is from a 1981 show.

That just leaves two songs. Track 14, "Water," is from a BBC concert she did in 1975. I'm only including the one song though, because I actually found two BBC concerts she did that year, and they're very similar. I'll be posting the other one in full, so the only thing that interested me from this one was that single unique song. I also found a 1977 BBC concert she did, so expect that one to be posted soon as well.

Finally, track 15, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," is the song Dee is best known for. This duet with Elton John was a massive hit in 1976, hitting Number One in the both the U.S. and Britain. I wanted to include a version of it on this album. However, the TV appearances I found just had Dee and John lip-syncing. But I did find a concert version from 1976 that featured both of them, so I included that one. For all the other songs with audience applause, I got rid of the applause using the MVSEP program. But I kept the applause for this one, due to the spoken intro and some other things that wouldn't have sounded right without crowd noise.

If you want to know more about Dee's career, here's her Wikipedia page:

Squeeze - BBC Sessions, Volume 10: Quay Sessions, Kelvingrove Bandstand, Glasgow, Britain, 8-1-2024

Here's a concert by the band Squeeze, from 2024.

It's pretty amazing to consider that this band was formed in 1974, which means they've been together off and on for fifty years. Frankly, this concert mostly consists of their hits, with only three relatively new songs sprinkled in. So there isn't a big need for me to post this. However, this has been unavailable on the Internet, as far as I could tell. But an anonymous musical friend taped it off the radio when it was broadcast, and sent it to me. So by posting it here, I believe I'm making it available for anyone for the first time. So thanks to that person for their help.

One can find the full set list of this concert here:

Squeeze Concert Setlist at Summer Nights at The Bandstand 2024 on August 1, 2024 | setlist.fm

That shows five songs were performed that didn't make it to the BBC broadcast, including the final encore, "Black Coffee in Bed."

I do have to say that although the band members are getting up there in age, you wouldn't be able to tell just from listening to it. They still sound very good.

This album is 53 minutes long.

The Libertines - BBC In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-29-2025

The flood of albums from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival continues, with a set by the British band the Libertines.

I gotta say this band didn't impress me. It's not that they're bad, but they didn't make much of an impression. But I promised to post all the sets from this festival that got enough votes in the poll I put forward, so here you are.

If you want to know more, here's their Wikipedia entry:

Weezer - BBC In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-28-2025

Here's more from the flood of albums from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival. This time, it's the band Weezer.

In my opinion, Weezer's discography is a mixed bag. If you look at the crowd-sourced ratings of their albums at rateyourmusic.com, they have some very highly rated albums (their first two especially) and also some that are shockingly low. But they've been around for a long time, since the mid-1990s, and have enough good songs for a solid concert here.

If you want to know more about them, here's their Wikipedia:
