As I explained in my previous post about her, up until very recently, I had no opinion about Carlile. She's been successful both in terms of sales and criticism with her original material. But this is all covers, so that's a moot point. What matters here is her choice in songs, and how well she performs them. I think she has great taste, choosing great songs in a variety of genres. Unlike the last album in this series, which had a few obscure songs, every song here is an undeniable classic. And her voice is top notch, one of the best of her generation. So what's not to like? If you've never heard her before, please give this a listen.
When it comes to sound quality, 11 out of 15 of the songs here are officially unreleased. But, as I said in my notes for the last album in this series, I've maintained a high standard over which songs to include. These all sound good.
Here are the original artists for each song:
01 Can't Help Falling in Love - Elvis Presley
02 Crazy - Patsy Cline / Willie Nelson
03 Nothing Compares 2 U - Prince / Sinead O'Connor
04 It's Over - Roy Orbison
05 Down on the Corner - Creedence Clearwater Revival
06 Landslide - Fleetwood Mac
07 Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
08 Oh, Darling - Beatles
09 Sunday Morning Coming Down - Johnny Cash
10 Wild Horses - Rolling Stones
11 In Spite of Ourselves - John Prine
12 Helplessly Hoping - Crosby, Stills & Nash
13 Making Believe - Kitty Wells
14 Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver
15 '39 - Queen

The cover art photo comes from a Johnny Cash tribute concert in 2012. "Folsom Prison Blues" here comes from that.
