Van Morrison - Caledonia Soul Music - Non-Album Tracks (1973)

It's time for more Van Morrison. I've been posting pretty much one album of stray tracks for each year in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and that continues with 1973.

Actually, Morrison could have released two more albums in 1973, because I've already posted an album he did of country standards recorded from 1971 to 1973, which can be found here:

As for this album, the highlight has to be song "Caledonia Soul Music." It's seventeen minutes long and mostly instrumental. I have no idea why on Earth it remains officially unreleased. You should get this album for that alone, but the rest of it is solid too. He does two duets with Jackie DeShannon that are especially nice.

    Caledonia Soul Music is an outtake from His Band And The Street Choir, so dates from 1970.

      I've heard that, after I posted this. But it would be really hard for me to change now. I'd have to redo all the albums in between. Let's just imagine in this alternate universe that he didn't get around to releasing it until 1973. ;)

    Who is playing mandolin on the Caledonia Soul Music track? Is it John Platania? No credit given to a mando player on the album. This is the best unofficially released

      It must be John Platania. Published lyrics have "John, play a taste of mandolin". I can't find him listed anywhere as a mandolin player, but it's likely the best guess because there are no other mandolin players listed around this time.

    So... I swear Caldonia Soul Music is either "channeling" or straight up theft of Funkadelic's "Can you get to that".. is it me.. the similarities are just too close. Now that song was released in 71, and there was some mention of this originating in 70 - so who knows, maybe they snagged it from Van.. either way, both are amazing - ;)
