Pat Benatar - Greatest Hits Live (1980-2015) (A Mike Solof Guest Post)

Here's another nice guest post by Mike Solof. It's a collection of the best songs by Pat Benatar - as judged by Mike, who is a big fan. But there's a twist, because he chose all live versions. Well, except for three songs at the end he couldn't bear leaving out, which apparently were never performed live.

This album came to be because I had posted a concert by Joan Jett, and I was planning on posting one by Pat Benatar as well. Those two have always been linked in my mind, since they were pioneering female rock and rollers that became famous at the start of the 1980s. Anyway, since Mike is a bigger Benatar fan than I am, I asked him what would be the best concert recording from her. Instead, he came up with this idea, to make something that contains all of her best known songs, most of them performed within a year or two of being recorded.

The songs are in rough chronological order of when they were first released. But the actual performance dates jump all over, from 1980 to 2015. A little over half of the songs here are from bootlegs, but very excellent sounding ones. The following songs, however, are from official live albums: tracks 8, 9, 10, 12, 17, 20, and 24 through 28. Earthquake Relief Benefit, Cow Palace, Daly City, CA, 11-26-1989, Part 6 - All-Star Jam with Steve Miller

NOTE: Before I say anything about this album, I found a short set of the Dynatones at this concert, and I added it to Part 1. Thanks to the anonymous e-mailer who told me that could be found on YouTube, just buried really deep.

Here is the sixth and last part of the 1989 Earthquake Relief Benefit concert at the Cow Palace, in Daly City. But note the Cow Palace show was just one of three held in the area on that same night, so there's a lot more of this concert to come. This album is a jam session featuring a mix of performers from earlier sets that evening. I called it "All-Star Jam with Steve Miller" because Miller definitely dominates, singing most of the songs. It's practically like a second Miller set, with some guest stars helping him out, but with him doing almost all blues and soul cover versions.

I have to admit that I don't know for sure who took part in this jam session. One can clearly see Miller, Neil Young, and Norton Buffalo on the cover image I chose, and one can hear them as well. I also can easily make out the sound of the vocals of Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt, especially on "Wang Dang Doodle." Both of them performed at a different concert that was part of this benefit in Oakland. So they must have rushed across the San Francisco Bay to make it here in time. Miller introduced the Chambers Brothers right before "In the Midnight Hour," asking them to help sing it, so clearly they were on this as well.

Additionally, according to setlist.fm, Carlos Santana, Maria Muldaur, John Kahn, and the Dynatones were said to take part too, as well as others. Carlos Santana would have been a challenge, since Santana played a big concert as part of this benefit at some point on this same day in Watsonville, California. That's an hour and a half away, without traffic. Perhaps that Watsonville concert ended earlier and he hightailed it to this concert, I don't know. If you can hear his distinctive lead guitar work, please let me know. 

Video footage on YouTube exists of nearly all of this concert. Watching that could confirm who took part in this section of the show. However, I couldn't find any video from this portion.

Earthquake Relief Benefit, Cow Palace, Daly City, CA, 11-26-1989, Part 5 - Neil Young

Here's Part 4 of the 1989 Earthquake Relief Benefit concert at the Cow Palace, in Daly City. This is a Neil Young solo acoustic set.

As I mentioned in the Crosby, Stills and Nash set earlier in this series, I find it rather strange Young didn't play with CSN at all, since they performed in the same venue on the same night. Furthermore, they did an entire show together at the Bridge Benefit concert a month earlier. 

Perhaps Young was focused on promoting his new album at the time, "Freedom." It came out in October 1989, and was a big commercial and critical success. Only two songs here are from that album though, "Rockin' in the Free World" and "Crime in the City (Sixty to Zero, Part 1)."

Here's Part 4 of the 1989 Earthquake Relief Benefit concert at the Cow Palace, in Daly City. This set features the Steve Miller Band.

This set is a mix of some of his 1970s hits, plus a couple of blues covers ("Mercury Blues" and "Who Do You Love").

Miller would later lead an all-star jam at the end of the concert. There enough material from that for me to post a separate album. So look for that one as well.

Here's Part 3 of the Cow Palace, Daly City 1989 Earthquake Relief Benefit concert. This part stars Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Note that Paul Kantner, a member of Jefferson Airplane/ Jefferson Starship, helped sing one song here, "Wooden Ships." He co-wrote the song with Crosby and Stills back in 1969. 

I have to say I'm pretty surprised Crosby, Stills and Nash didn't perform with Neil Young in this concert. Young had his own set in this same venue later in the evening. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young were on relatively good terms at the time. They put out only their second studio album as a foursome in 1988, "American Dream." After the album had disappointing reviews, Young decided not to tour with CSN to promote it. However, he did play a few benefit concerts with them around this time. In fact, CSNY did a set together about this long at the Bridge School Benefit only a month before this, and they played three more concerts together in 1990. But then again, Young is well known to be very mercurial, and has been for his entire music career. Also, he did have a solo tour in Europe due to start less than two weeks later, so perhaps he wanted this to be a warm-up for that.

Here's Part 2 of the Cow Palace, Daly City 1989 Earthquake Relief Benefit concert. This part stars Jesse Colin Young, formerly of the Youngbloods.

I explained the basics about these benefit concerts in the write-up to Part 1. Now that I've done that, I don't feel the need to write much about each musical act. I've talked about most of them elsewhere, and if I keep these write-ups short, I'll be able to post more, faster.

I do want to note though that I generally don't know the order of appearances for the concerts, with the exception of some of the biggest names. Only because those got mentioned in the couple of newspaper articles I could find. Here's one, in case you're curious:

I'm frustrated not to know the order, because I remember taping a lot of these concerts off the radio at the time. Those tapes are long gone by now, for sure. But they were only the four or so hours of highlights that I mentioned in Part 1. For instance, I remember hearing Jesse Colin Young do "Let's Get Together," but not an entire set like this. Earthquake Relief Benefit, Cow Palace, Daly City, CA, 11-26-1989, Part 1 - America, Aaron Neville, Eddie Money, the Dynatones, and the Chambers Brothers

It's time for me to start posting another big collection of albums from a major rock festival. This time, it's from the Earthquake Relief Benefit, held in the San Francisco Bay Area in late 1989. I've found enough music to make 19 different albums! This actually was three concerts, all held on the same day, November 26, 1989. This is the first of six albums I'm posting that took place at the Cow Palace in Daly City, just south of San Francisco. 

This album gathers all the musical acts where I only had short sets. For the other five I have from this venue, each musical act gets their own set. The acts here are: the Dynatones, the Chambers Brothers, America, Aaron Neville, and Eddie Money.

These concerts were a reaction to the Loma Prieta earthquake, which happened on October 16, 1989, at 5:04 P.M. (I know the time well, because I was just getting out of a college class in the area when the earthquake hit. We were all okay, but the building suffered structural damage and was later closed for retrofitting.) Famously, a game of the baseball World Series was just minutes from starting at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. It had to be cancelled, but tens of millions of people around the world found out about the earthquake as it happened due to the T.V. broadcast. Although the epicenter was about ten miles northeast of Santa Cruz, there was a lot of damage in San Francisco and Oakland, due to poor construction there. 63 people died, most of them in Oakland. The earthquake registered 6.9 on the Richter Scale. 

There was lots of damage throughout the Bay Area, and thousands of injuries. It so happened the Bay Area had a vibrant music scene, and probably the most altruistic (and well known) concert promoter in the country, Bill Graham. Graham leaped into action, and got these three benefits concerts to take place only about forty days after the earthquake. They ended up raising about two million dollars to relief efforts. That was just a small amount compared to the billions needed, but it's nice to see that so many musical acts wanted to help out just the same. I would bet that even more would have liked to take part, but were tied up with concert tours or other obligations they couldn't get out of on such short notice.

I understand about five hours of highlights from the different concerts were shown on a local T.V. station that night. The main way funds were raised was by people watching on T.V. and donating over the phone. But, for some reason, we have a lot more than just five hours of highlights. I'm posting about 15 hours of music in total. All of it has the excellent sound quality of a soundboard or FM radio bootleg. I think that's because a lot of it became part of Bill Graham's music archive, which later was made public through the company Wolfgang's Vault, then spread to various bootleg sites. You can find video footage of most of the acts on YouTube, although sometimes one has to dig deep.

However, I couldn't find all of the music acts. Some that were billed to perform at Cow Palace included Maria Muldaur, Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, Joe Louis Walker, Narada Michael Walden, the Solid Senders, and the Brass Band. I'm pretty sure some or even all of these actually did perform, since I found some mentions of them. Maria Muldaur actually sings a duet with Aaron Neville on this album, but I believe she got her own set as well. And Paul Kantner later performed a song with Crosby, Stills and Nash, so it stands to reason he got his own set too, perhaps with former bandmate Grace Slick. If anyone knows for sure about these acts, and/or actually has the recordings, please let me know. However, according to the promotional material I found, at least I was able to find all of the best known acts.

In case you're curious, the act that performed the longest in this album was Eddie Money. His portion lasts 21 minutes. Also, I'm only guessing about the order of the acts. The exception is the Dynatones. One can tell they were the first act since the emcee introduced them that way.

Dana Gillespie - Hold on to Your Fire - Non-Album Tracks (1971-1976)

Recently, a commenter asked me if I still plan on posting more non-album tracks collections. Actually, I have lots of them that are already made. I just don't get around to posting them much because they're part of my music collection and I usually prioritize posting things I've recently discovered. But I'll try to get back to posting more of those. Back in 2020, I posted a non-album tracks collection by British singer-songwriter Dana Gillespie. It consisted of rare songs she did in the late 1960s. Finally, I'm back with a second such collection, from the early 1970s.

At the time of the start of the music here, she had released two albums in the late 1960s, mostly consisting of her own songs. Both were well received, but neither of them were hits. Around 1970, she started musically collaborating with David Bowie, whom she had known since about 1965. She was signed to his record company and management team. Bowie even wrote a song for her, "Andy Warhol," and they performed it together on the BBC in 1971. 

The first five songs here are demos she recorded in 1971. This was half of an album with her songs on one side and Bowie's songs on the other. About 500 copies were made and circulated in the music industry to help both of them get record deals. Bowie's songs were redone for his album "Hunky Dory." These versions come from a later archival compilation called "What Memories We Make."

However, Gillespie didn't release another album out until 1973, because she got involved playing a major role (Mary Magdelene) in the first London production of the play "Jesus Christ Superstar." That kept her busy through 1972, and a soundtrack was released in 1973. Tracks 6 and 7 here are from that. 

When she finally released her next album, "Weren't Born a Man," it was a very good one. I recommend it if you haven't heard it yet. Bowie and his guitarist Mick Ronson technically produced it. But in fact, they were too busy with their careers, having turned into big stars since Bowie started collaborating with Gillespie in 1971. But Bowie did have some involvement, for instance, playing on and producing that album's version of "Andy Warhol." 

In 1974, she released another album, "Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle." This was also was good, but didn't get much traction. It showed her moving more in a blues direction. Unfortunately, she began having trouble with her record company. She got stuck in a dispute, and was unable to release any more records. Her next album wouldn't come out until 1982. From that point on, she went all in on the blues, and put out many more albums in the blues style. Tracks 8 through 14 are from 1973 and 1974, and mostly consist of songs she wanted to put out on her next album. Those didn't come out until the "What Memories We Make" compilation mentioned above.

While having a music career, Gillespie also was pursuing a movie career. She certainly had the looks to be a big star. When she was blocked from making more records, she spent most of the rest of the 1970s as an actress. She landed some prominent roles, but never became a big star in that field either. The last song here is from a 1976 movie.

Hudson Ford - Ebbets Field, Denver, CO, 7-1974

I'm rather bummed to post this, because this might finally be the end of the line for posting Ebbets Field radio broadcasts. I thought I was done after posting over 70 albums, and then a couple of people came forward with some uncirculated bootlegs. First came a Wendy Waldman one, which I posted a couple of days ago. Now this Hudson Ford one, by an anonymous contributor. 

Hudson Ford was a band that primarily consisted of the singer-songwriter duo of Richard Hudson and John Ford. They got their start as members of the band Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, with Hudson on drums and Ford on bass. But that band broke up before the end of the 1960s. Around 1970, the two of them joined the Strawbs. They had a growing role in that band with their singing and songwriting. Their biggest success as a songwriting duo was the Strawbs song "Part of the Union," which went all the way to Number Two in the British singles chart in early 1973. But their growing role in the band put them in conflict with Dave Cousins, who wrote and sang most of the band's songs. 

In the middle of 1973, Hudson and Ford left the Strawbs to form their own band. At this point, Hudson switched from playing drums to guitar, and sang more lead vocals with Ford. They put out an album by the end of 1973, "Nickelodeon." It included "Pick Up the Pieces," which made it to the Top Ten in the British singles chart.

At the time of this concert, the band hadn't yet released their second album, "Free Spirit," but they were close. So they played a couple of songs from that album here, and talked about it coming out soon. However, they didn't play "Burn Baby Burn." That would be their second and final hit. They would put out three more albums after that, before breaking up in late 1977.

This recording contained a fair amount of hiss. However, I was able to remove almost all of it with the use of the MVSEP audio editing program.

By the way, I don't know the exact date of this concert. But they only had one series of shows at this venue, in late July 1974, so it has to have been that month. For four nights, they were the opening act for the band Goose Creek Symphony, which explains why this recording is rather short. 

Here's yet another plea for people to come forward with more of these Ebbets Field radio broadcasts. The recent posts of this album and the Wendy Waldman one show there are more of these bootlegs out there. Let's bring them back into the public domain so they can be appreciated after all these years!

Bob Dylan - Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY, 6-13-2017

Here's a really great find: Bob Dylan a soundboard concert from 2017! I only had three soundboard-level quality concert recordings from him prior to finding this one. (The others are one from 2009 and two from 2025, and I've already posted those at this blog.) This is from the Capitol Theater in Port Chester leak that happened in April 2026.

Actually, it's kind of from that. When that leak first emerged, this Dylan concert was listed, but the download link to it didn't work. That frustrated a lot of people, since it was the most desired one of all. It turns out this concert started to publicly circulate a month or two later, and missed it until now (August 2026). Better late than never.

The sound quality is excellent, and someone named Bennyboy remixed it. Note though that the sound is in mono, like nearly all the other bootlegs from that leak.

There's one thing I didn't like about this recording, though I'm not sure if it's what actually happened in the concert or was a limitation of the bootleg. That's the fact that there was usually only a second or two of applause between songs. I strongly suspect some of that applause was cut off, because it doesn't seem reasonable the band would play song after song with barely a pause. There was some applause near the end, so I patched in little bits between some of the other songs to give more reasonable breaks between songs. 

This concert took place during a time when Dylan released several albums of traditional pop standards from the pre-rock and roll era. First, he released "Shadows in the Night" in 2015, then "Fallen Angels" in 2016, and then "Triplicate" in 2017, which actually was a triple album. So he included some of these covers in this concert, though just a few. Here are the covers, with the original songwriters in parantheses:

John Carpenter - John Carpenter Presents: Trailers of the Mind... It's All in Your Head! (1974-1994) (A Mike Solof Guest Post)

Here's another guest post by Mike Solof. He really outdid himself this time, with this collection of John Carpenter's movie music. 

Mike is a big fan of the movies of John Carpenter, who is especially renowned in the horror genre. But it turns out Carpenter composed the music for nearly all of his movies, and Mike is a fan of that music as well. His original plan was to collect his favorite songs from most of Carpenter's movies, and post that. However, some of the songs had spoken dialogue from the movies over them, and others did not. I thought that was an imbalance, and asked him if he could add in some more dialogue. Mike took that suggestion and ran with it. He labored many, many hours carefully adding dialogue, until all the songs here are a mix of music and that dialogue. In so doing, he created something new: songs from the movies with dialogue that helps set an ominous mood and reminds you of key movie scenes. He spent a long time getting the timing of the words and music to be to his satisfaction.

In case you're not familiar with Carpenter's name, you'd probably recognize many of his movies, such as "Halloween," "The Thing," "The Fog," Escape from New York," "Christine," "They Live," and many more. Personally, I'm not into the horror movie genre. But even I found this an interesting listen.

Wendy Waldman - Ebbets Field, Denver, CO, 4-3-1975

I've very excited to be posting this. I've posted over 70 Ebbets Field radio broadcasts, until I couldn't find any more to post. But there are credible reports of at least 100 other radio broadcasts from this venue. I'm eager to find more, since they all have excellent sound quality, and usually were of talented performers. I'm glad to say that I got a couple of responses to my plea for more of these recordings. Here's one, from Paul Newton. It's a set by singer-songwriter Wendy Waldman.

Chances are pretty good that you've never heard of Wendy Waldman before. That was the case for me before I started working on these Ebbets Field shows. But sometimes finding success in the music business is more about lucky breaks than musical talent. That seems to be the case here. She put out a bunch of albums in the 1970s and after, but never made a commercial mark. Yet after listening to this, I realized Waldman is a talented songwriter and also a very good singer. 

One way you can tell she's a good songwriter is the fact that her songs have been covered by over 70 musical acts. Those include: Garth Brooks, Aaron Neville, Kenny Rogers, Alison Krauss, Linda Ronstadt, Robert Smith of The Cure, Kathy Mattea, Maria Muldaur, Kim Carnes, Melissa Manchester, Vanessa Williams, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Percy Sledge, and many more. Yet, she got so little exposure as a performer that I couldn't find any decent TV performances or even photographs of her in concert in the 1970s. To make the cover, I had to take a screenshot of a TV performance where she was back-up singer in a Linda Ronstadt concert.

In 1970, Waldman was a founding member of the band Bryndle. Unfortunately, they only released a single and then broke up, since they couldn't get a record company to release a full album from them. But the other band members were Andrew Gold, Karla Bonoff, and Kenny Edwards. Gold and Bonoff in particular went on to have a lot of success in the 1970s. Much later, Byrndle reunited and finally released albums in 1995 and 2001.

At the time of this concert, Waldman had just released her third album, cleverly titled "Wendy Waldman." It never bothered the record charts, like her other albums, sadly.

This bootleg recording generally sounds very good. However, there was a problem: the song "Wild Bird" got cut off halfway through, and the first half of the next song, "Train Song" was also missing. I managed to patch this, though the results weren't great. For "Wild Bird," I couldn't find any live versions. So I took the studio album version, used the MVSEP program to strip it down to solo acoustic, and then used that to fill in the missing part. For "Train Song," I was surprised to find another live version, from another rare bootleg, from 1974. So I used the banter from before that song, edited somewhat, and then the live version for that missing part. Unfortunately, both of these edits aren't that good, due to the lack of material to work from. I think it's extremely obvious when the edits happen, especially for "Train Song," which suddenly goes from an acoustic performance to a full-band one. But I figure it's better to have these patches than only partial versions of these songs.

As mentioned above, the cover image is a screenshot I took of Waldman when she was a back-up singer for a Linda Ronstadt TV appearance. I don't know exactly when or where, but the song was "You're No Good," and it almost certainly was from the late 1970s.

Al Green - Capitol Theater, Port Chester, NY, 10-25-2012

Here's an Al Green concert from 2012. It's part of the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester mono soundboard leak that happened in April 2026. So the sound quality is excellent here, and the performance is very good as well. 

In my opinion, Al Green is out of the greats of soul music. He had a really great run for most of the 1970s. But after that, he disappeared from popular music for a long time, due to him becoming a preacher and putting out a bunch of gospel albums. He slowly got back to secular music, and released three well received secular albums between 2003 and 2008 (and no new material since then). Still, he's kept a relatively low profile since the 1970s.

I've been hesitant to post any post-1970s Al Green concerts because even though he's mostly gone back to performing his 1970s soul hits, he still does some religious material. That's not to appealing to a hopeless heathen like myself. But luckily, on this concert, he kept that to two songs, "Amazing Grace" and "Nearer My God to Thee," and both of those are perfectly fine songs, in my book.

The song list below is a bit misleading. It shows him doing a whole run of classic soul songs, from "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" to "You Are Everything." But don't get too excited, because actually, all of those are just snippets, usually only about 15 to 20 seconds long. However, all the other songs here are full length, including an unexpected cover of Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman" earlier in the concert.

Prince - Rock Over Germany, Flugplatz, Luneburg, Germany, 9-3-1993

Why oh why have I never posted a Prince album until now?! It's a major oversight, considering he's a musical great with lots of really interesting unreleased material. The main reason was I had heard his legal team came down particularly hard on any copyright issue. But I've been almost entirely free of the copyright police for the past year plus, for whatever reason. So I figure, what the heck, I'll post this and take my chances.

I have to admit that, probably like a majority of Prince's fans, I haven't closely followed his entire career. If you look at the crowd-sourced ratings of the albums he released in his lifetime, all the really highly rated ones are from between 1979 and 1995. So I figure 1993 is a good time for a concert from him, as it can be kind of a greatest hits of his best songs from his most popular and creative era. This is the best sounding concert I found from that year. It's a soundboard. 

At the time of this concert, Prince's most recent album was released in late 1992. It was his second album with his band at the time, the New Power Generation. I wish I could tell you the album name, but the "title" was an unpronounceable symbol. However, it later generally became known as "Love Symbol." (By the end of 1993, Prince claimed this symbol was his new name, due to a dispute he was having with his record company. The media responded by generally calling him "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince." He returned to calling himself "Prince" in 2000, when he finally was able to change record companies.) 

Anyway, Prince didn't release a new studio album in 1993. This was very unusual for him, since he was extremely prolific. However, on September 10, 1993, he released a double album greatest hits collection called "The Hits." If you check the concert date, that was one week after this concert. He played two songs that were first released on that greatest hits: "Pope" and "Peach."

There's just a couple of notes about the songs performed. When you see "When Doves Cry" in the song list, don't get too excited. It's only about ten seconds of the introductory chords before switching to another song. However, he played nearly all of his other big hits he'd had up until that time. A few other songs also are short snippets. 

And "talk by Mayte" is a spoken message entirely in German. I don't know what was said, since I don't speak German. But I do know who Mayte is. She joined his backing band, the New Power Generation, in 1992, when she turned 18 years old. She was born and raised in Germany, which explains her speaking in German to the German audience. She and Prince married in 1996 and stayed married for four years.

The music is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

Cheap Trick - Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY, 9-26-2015

Here's another concert recording from an April 2026 leak of dozens of concerts that took place at the Capitol Theatre, in Port Chester, New York. Like all the others from that leak, this is an excellent soundboard bootleg, though the sound is in mono. This concerts features the band Cheap Trick. 

This recording hasn't been publicly available before, at least not in this curated form. It was available in the raw form of the original leak, but those files have mostly disappeared from the Internet by now, as far as I can tell.

Cheap Trick had their commercial heyday in the late 1970s and early 1980s. But they've kept going, and are still going today, as I write this in 2026. Unlike a lot of bands that have been around a very long time, they haven't turned only into an oldies act. In fact some of their better rated albums (judging by the crowd-sourced rateyourmusic.com) are some later ones, such as "Rockford," released in 2006. 

This concert features a mix of older and newer (for 2015) songs, plus two covers, "The 'In' Crowd" and "I'm Waiting for the Man."

By the way, I took stock of how things are going with the posting of these Port Chester soundboard concerts. At first, a couple dozen, at least, were posted by others, saving me most of the work. But it seems those efforts have stopped. So I'm going to try to post the rest. I count about 30 more that interest me. It'll be a while though, since I have to chop single sound files into individual mp3s for most of these, just like I did for this one.

Gentle Giant - WLIR Ultrasonic Concert Series, Ultrasonic Recording Studios, Hempstead, NY, 10-7-1975

I've got a friend who really likes the British prog rock band Gentle Giant. They are one of his very favorite prog rock bands. After hearing him talk about them, I noticed I had one of their concerts in my very big pile of music I want to post, because it's part of the "Ultrasonic Recording Studios" radio broadcast series. So here it is.

The concert is well timed if you're a Gentle Giant fan. Looking at the crowd-sourced ratings of their albums on rateyourmusic.com, their first seven albums, released 1970 to 1977, all got very high ratings, and then there was a drop-off. This concert took place shortly after the release of their seventh album, "Free Hand." This concert consists of three songs from that album, plus songs from five previous albums.

Personally, I wasn't that taken with this music. Their songs don't stick in my mind. However, there's no denying they had lots of musical talent. By the way, my friend was raving about an Eber Pinheiro remix and remaster of the Gentle Giant album "In a Glass House," which was officially released earlier this year. So if you're a fan of this band, you should check that out.  

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

Various Artists - Les Paul & Friends, Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York City, 8-18-1988

Les Paul never liked rock and roll all that much, but he is one of the key people who made rock and roll what it is nonetheless. I'll explain more about his massive influence on music further down below. But first, this was a tribute concert to honor Paul when he was still in good enough health to perform. He was 73 years old at the time of this concert, but he would go on to live another 21 years before dying in 2009. A lot of musical stars showed up to honor him and perform music with him: Eddie Van Halen, B. B. King, Carly Simon, Steve Miller, Rita Coolidge, David Gilmour, Stanley Jordan, and the Stray Cats.

I think Les Paul isn't as well known as he should be today, because he made his considerable mark on music before the rock and roll era ever began. Here's the intro to his Wikipedia entry: 

"Les Paul was an American jazz, country, and blues guitarist, songwriter, luthier, and inventor. He was one of the pioneers of the solid-body electric guitar... and served as inspiration for the Gibson Les Paul. While he is mainly known for jazz and popular music, he had an early career in country music. In the 1950s, he and his wife, singer and guitarist Mary Ford, made numerous recordings, selling millions of copies. Paul is credited with many recording innovations. His early experiments with overdubbing, delay effects such as tape delay, phasing, and multitrack recording were among the first to attract widespread attention. His licks, trills, chording sequences, fretting techniques, and timing set him apart from his contemporaries and inspired many guitarists of the present day. Among his many honors, Paul is one of a handful of artists with a permanent exhibit in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. [He] is the only inductee in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the National Inventors Hall of Fame."

In this concert, Paul played lead guitar on some instrumentals by himself. He also served as the emcee, introducing the guest stars. He then played guitar for some of the guest stars as well.

This is that was broadcast on the Cinemax TV channel. Maybe this is all of it, or maybe there was more, I don't know. You can find the video of this on YouTube. However, this has never been officially released in any audio format.

Herbie Hancock & the Headhunters - WLIR Ultrasonic Concert Series, Ultrasonic Recording Studios, Hempstead, NY, 10-1-1973

I recently posted a couple of concert albums by Chick Corea and his band Return to Forever, and John McLaughlin and his band the Mahavishnu Orchestra (as I write this in August 2026). I'm not into that kind of jazz. But I do want to post all the worthy concerts from certain concert series, and I know other people do like this kind of music. So here's a Herbie Hancock concert from that same time period, the early 1970s, as part of the WLIR Ultrasonic Concert Series.

Hancock has to be one of the most famous jazz musicians of all time. A lot of that has to do with his 1973 album "Head Hunters." On this album, he switched styles, combining instrumental jazz with funk more than he had on any previous album. Here's what the Wikipedia entry about the album has to say about how it was received by the public: "The album was a commercial and artistic breakthrough for Hancock, crossing over to funk and rock audiences and bringing jazz-funk and jazz fusion to mainstream attention, peaking at number 13 on the Billboard 200. Today the album is regarded as a landmark of fusion and has influenced artists in numerous other genres." In fact, it went Platinum, and became the best selling jazz album of all time, up until that point.

That album was released on October 26, 1973. This concert took place on October 1st. So Hancock had his new band, the Head Hunters, and his new funk-jazz style, but I guess the audience wasn't familiar with his style until they heard it in this concert.  

The sound quality is excellent. However, there was a problem with the recording in that there was a lot of hiss. But that kind of thing is easily fixed these days. I ran all the songs through the MVSEP audio editing program, and got rid of most of the hiss. I'm assuming this sounds better than any previous versions of this bootleg.

Various Artists - The Night that Changed America- A Grammy Salute to the Beatles, Convention Center, Los Angeles, CA, 1-27-2014

I've posted a bunch of tribute concerts to musical greats, but I've missed this one until now. On February 9, 1964, the Beatles performed on the "Ed Sullivan" TV show in the U.S. This concert was meant to honor the 50th anniversary of that performance. It was filmed on January 27, 2014, but was broadcast nationally on February 9, 2014, which was 50 years to the exact day. The main highlight was that the two surviving Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, performed separately and together. But many other big names also played cover versions of their favorite Beatles songs.

That 1964 episode of the "Ed Sullivan Show" was the highest rated T.V. program in the history of the U.S. up until that point. It installed a massive wave of Beatlemania in the U.S. (The wave had already hit Britain and other countries in 1963.) As I've read about the history of rock and roll, I've noticed many later stars credited this T.V. show for inspiring them to become musicians. That's a list that includes Billy Joel, Tom Petty, John Fogerty, Kenny Loggins, Bruce Springsteen, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Chrissie Hynde, and many, many more. Getting this album ready to post was a little difficult, because the applause at the ends of songs was often cut off for commercial breaks. Also, there were some non-musical sections I cut out. For instance, there were video montages of the lives of each of the four Beatles. I did a lot of work to get the songs to transition from one to another naturally, usually by adding in more applause. Comedian Eric Idle had a lot of funny things to say, but those were all lead-ups to the video montages, so that got cut as well. However, you'll note a lot of other famous non-musicians introduced some of the musical acts.

Surprisingly, not only has this concert never been officially released in any audio format, it hasn't been released on video either (although some "grey market" versions exist). The sound quality is excellent.

Suzi Quatro - Live at the Record Plant, Record Plant, Sausalito, CA, 3-25-1975

Now that I've finished posting everything from the Ebbets Field radio broadcasts (aside from a couple of possible stragglers), I want to focus more on posting other on-going series, like concerts from the Record Plant, Ultrasonic, Midnight Special, and the bottomless well of BBC recordings. So here's another Record Plant recording. This one features a musical act new to this blog, Suzi Quatro.

Quatro was a pioneer for being a female rock and roll star in the 1970s when there weren't many. As an American, she started out in the late 1960s as part of an all-female band called the Pleasure Seekers. They didn't have much commercial success. But they gained the attention of British producer Mickie Most, who was only interested in Suzi Quatro. He brought her to England and connected her with the hit-making songwriting duo Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. They would go on to write most of her hits. Her first big hit was "Can the Can," which went all the way to Number One in Britain in 1973. More hits followed, until about 1980.

However, while Quatro had many hits in Britain and other countries around the world, she only had limited success in the U.S. At the time of this concert, she'd had almost no success there at all. But in 1977, she got a key repeat guest role as the character "Leather Tuscadero" on the popular T.V. show "Happy Days," which finally got her a lot of attention the U.S. That led to her having one big hit in the U.S. in 1978, "Stumblin' In." 

This concert must have been part of a tour to try to help break her in the U.S. in 1975. Interestingly, she didn't play her songs that had been big hits in Europe, like "Can the Can," "Devil Gate Drive," "Daytona Demon," and "48 Crash." She did play her latest single at the time, "Your Mama Won't Like Me," but that only made it to Number 31 in Britain and didn't chart in the U.S. at all.
