Brinsley Schwarz - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: 1970-1971

Brinsley Schwarz is mainly known as the band Nick Lowe was in during the first half of the 1970s. They're a seriously underestimated band, but their music still has a core group of fans. Thanks to that continued interest, two archival albums of the band performing for the BBC have been released. However, the band played for the BBC so often that I found enough material for three albums.

The band put out their first album in 1970, and began performing for the BBC at the same time. Strangely though, the two official BBC albums I mentioned above missed most of their early BBC appearances. Only three of the songs here are officially released. (The first two come from an appearance on the German TV Show "Beat Club," but the rest are from the BBC.)

For the most part, the sound quality here is very good, despite this mostly being unreleased material. The one exception is "Love Song,"which just quite didn't make it cut. I've included it as a bonus track instead.

Because Brinsley Schwarz isn't that widely known, their bootlegs are hard to track down. This includes some exceedingly rare performances. Note especially "Seymour, I Love You." This song was never officially released. I didn't put it on the band's stray tracks albums because it's just a decent instrumental. The song was longer, but there was some damage to the recording near the end, so I had to edit it down. The missing part was fairly repetitive and without any soloing, so I think the cut actually makes it stronger.

This album is 47 minutes long, not including the bonus track.

It's really damn hard finding good color photos of this band. The good news is that I found one for the cover here. The bad news is that it only clearly shows Nick Lowe and Ian Gomm (with the ginger hair). Also, I don't know when it was taken, although I do know it's from the Newlands Tavern in London.

UPDATE: On October 1, 2024, I upgraded the photo with the use of the Krea AI program.

  1. Very interested to see this - I'm connected with the current incarnation of The Newlands Tavern (now called The Ivy House) - and photos from the pub's pub rock heyday are extremely rare! Even the then managers, Reg and Sue Fentiman, have no known photographs. It definitely is the pub - the Fentimans told me that if ever I see a weird Mexican-looking motif behind a band, it's their place. I have another photo of a band rehearsing in 1975 and it's there too. Regarding when it was taken, I have a fairly extensive list of which bands played at the pub when in the 1970s, but Brinsley Schwarz not there. However, I'm a bit lacking 72/73, so maybe it was around then. Alternatively we have an original poster on the pub wall advertising Dr Feelgood - 'Next week - Kippington Lodge', so perhaps it was the one-off Kippington Lodge gig - though know Ian Gomm wasn't in them originally. Need to check, but I think that was 1974. Where did you get the photo from? Hugo

  2. Hello again Paul. Am still intrigued to know where this photo came from, and also whether you've ever come across any more from the Newlands Tavern. Many thanks, Hugo
