Concerts for the People of Kampuchea, Hammersmith Odeon, London, Britain, 12-26-1979 to 12-29-1979: Day 3, Part 1: The Pretenders, the Specials

Here's Day Three, Part 1, of the four-day-long Concerts for the People of Kampuchea. It has the highlights from the third night. Just like Part Two, there were three big music acts. This time, it was the Pretenders, the Specials, and the Who. The Who get their own album ("Day Three, Part 2"), so this is just the Pretenders and the Specials.

When I first posted this album in 2023, it was an hour longer. That's because it included a large portion of the set by the Who performed on the same night. But in October 2026, I decided to post the entire Who set as a separate album. So this now consists of just the sets by the Pretenders and the Specials. I'm deleting the old version and reposting it here to make it easier for you to find.

If you want to know more about these concerts in general, check out my write-up for Part One.

As I mentioned previously, there was an official double album released of these concerts, but it is long out of print. Three songs by the Pretenders and one song by the Specials come from that. In addition, a bootleg of outtakes from the official album was made public eventually. The rest of the Pretenders and Specials songs come from that.

I would have liked to have more songs by the Pretenders and the Specials, but I think there's just enough for both acts to put up a good showing. Both acts performed many more songs played that what's included here, since each of the three acts on this night basically performed their usual full concert set lists. For instance, the Specials played 15 songs, but there are only four here. Also, I'm guessing some of the banter between songs is missing.

This album is 33 minutes long.

The cover photo of the Pretenders is from this exact concert. It shows lead singer Chrissie Hynde prominently, and lead guitarist James Honeyman-Scott in the background.
