Jimmy Webb - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: In Concert, Arts Theatre, Belfast, Britain, 3-22-1998

Jimmy Webb is a great songwriter. He's written many hits for others. I've documented this by posting two volumes of people covering his songs as part of my "Covered" series. But he's never had a hit of his own, despite being a fine singer and performer, and his many solo albums haven't gotten a lot of attention. A big reason for that is that he's generally given his best songs for others to covers, and rarely even did his own versions on his albums. But in the late 1990s, he did some tours in which he mostly did his most famous songs in acoustic mode. This BBC recording documents one such concert.

Note that in 1996, Webb released the studio album "Ten Easy Pieces," in which he finally performed many of those hits he wrote for others, but in an acoustic mode. So this concert is fairly similar to that album, as it seems he was still promoting it over a year after it was released. But about half the songs here are different, plus there's a big difference between a studio album and a live one, especially the banter between songs.

Note that I previously posted a BBC concert he did in 1971. Now that I have a second one with this one, I've just renamed that earlier one "Volume 1." Here's the link it you want to get the updated version, which includes an improved cover image:

The cover photo is from a concert at the Jazz Cafe, wherever that is, in 1998. I improved it somewhat with the help of the Krea AI program.

  1. Hello Paul. While this isn't about Jimmy Webb, I have a suggestion for you for a new bootleg series. I just found that all 50 seasons of Saturday Night Live have recently been added to my peacock channel. The first season of two wasn't really that great from a comedy standpoint (they didn't really hit their stride until season 3), the show did included a lot more music compared to what they do now. I'd love to have boots of the music that they featured on the show. It would definitely be a large undertaking though. Anyway, what do you thing? Thanks, G.

    1. Sorry, that's not really something that interests me. I'm more interested in longer performances where the artists can go deeper than their last couple of hits. However, when it comes to SNL, last week, a couple of people asked me to post the SNL 50th anniversary concert. I've been waiting to see if it shows up somewhere else. So far, it hasn't. So I'll probably have to split it up into individual tracks myself and post it here soon.

    2. I completely understand! I just wanted to through that out. Thanks again, G.

  2. I believe you've argued this before, but once again, you are incorrect. Here's a Wikipedia article:

    The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain,[m] is a country in Northwestern Europe, off the coast of the continental mainland. It comprises England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom

    Note that clearly states that Northern Ireland, which includes Belfast, is a part of Britain. Britain is a common synonym for the United Kingdom. Once again, see this sentence:

    "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain..."

    Great Britain, however, is different. It is an island that does not include any part of Ireland.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Britain

    I trust Wikipedia more than you. If and when that Wikipedia entry changes, I'll be glad to make that change too.

    Or, if that doesn't work for you, how about a dictionary? Miriam Webster also says "Britain" is a synonym for the "United Kingdom."

    https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Britain

    It handily includes an essay about this very topic, in which it is explained that "Britain" can both be a reference to "Great Britain" the island OR the country that is also known as the "United Kingdom."

    https://www.merriam-webster.com/grammar/whats-the-difference-between-britain-england-great-britain-and-the-uk

    So the fact that Britain has two commonly used meanings doesn't mean one can just ignore one of them!

  4. hi Paul
    many thanks again for great variety of brilliant posts
    Maybe this is too late, but I've been downloading your covered series of Chuck Berry and noticed you asked for any suggestions - so here's four. 1) Memphis by the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. 2) La Juanda by Amos Garrett and Geoff Muldaur. 3) Dylan has done a cool version of Little Queenie on his recent outlaw tour with Willie Nelson. 4)Sandy Denny and The Bunch doing Nadine

    1. Thanks for the ideas. It is a bit late. However, if you and/or someone else keeps going and gives enough suggestions for another volume of alternates, I would be open to putting that together. And by the way, I did include that great Tosh version of Johnny B. Goode.

  6. So in other words, you have no rebuttal. No way to refute what an encyclopedia and dictionary has to say on this. I assume you will not be bothering me with this argument again.

  7. That's a challenge but I've got at least a few more: The Band - Promised Land; Jerry Garcia - Let It Rock; The Everlys - Maybelline; John Prine - C'est La Vie (You Never Can Tell);
    John Hammond - No Money Down (good, but I prefer the Duane Allman version you included), Van Morrison - Bye Bye Johnny;
    Dion (my old favourite) - Too Much Monkey Business;
    The Rolling Stones - Back In the USA (also Sheryl Crow does a version)
    + Chuck Berry tribute albums by Ron Wood, Mike Zeto, Jim & Jesse McReynolds
    (+ apologies re Peter Tosh)

    1. I like that you're taking up the challenge. You're getting there, but I think you're still short. I count 12 recommendations, but one of the CB albums I posted had 17 songs, and another had 19. Keep going! :) For instance, maybe recommend specific songs from those tribute albums. It would especially be good to get covers of some of his lesser known songs.

  8. OK, I've got some more
    Ron Wood - Mad Lad; Worried Life Blues; Mike Zito - Thirty Days;
    Jim & Jesse McReynolds - Reelin' and Rockin' (with a nice high lonesome sound); Buddy Holly - Brown Eyed Handsome Man;
    Vika and Linda Bull - Downbound Train; Daddy Cool - School Days
    I know I've already recommended Memphis by Jim Kweskin Jug Band, But George Thorogood also does a great version and tacks on Little Marie, the lesser known follow up
    Whew, makes me appreciate more the effort you put into this blog
    And while I'm here a particular Thank You for the incredible collection of Bob Dylan you've made available over the years

    1. Great! Now, I have one more thing to ask. Could you please put all of these files together in a zip file and send them to me? I have almost none of them in my own collection. My email address is thompson22 at runbox.com (remove the spaces and use the @ sign). Thanks!
