A few weeks back, I had a poll asking which musical acts I should focus on when posting albums for my big BBC project. Since then, I've been digging deeper, and I've found lots more source material. So, if you don't mind, I'd like to redo that poll.
Here's a little background first. For the past month plus, I've been focusing mostly on posting BBC albums from musical acts where I've already posted at least one BBC album. This has led to a lot of renumbering as I keep finding new stuff. I've made a lot of progress, but I still have about 50 of those albums to post. That'll take me a few more weeks, probably. As I finish that off, I want to turn to posting BBC albums from musical acts for whom I've never posted any BBC stuff from before. A lot of those are "big name" artists. I define that as the ones I have at least four BBC albums that I have yet to post.
So below is a list of all such big name artists. It's going to take me ages to post all this stuff, not to mention lots of non-BBC stuff I'm posting too. (Plus, hundreds of BBC albums from artists where I have three or less albums.) So I'd like your feedback on what to prioritize. With this poll, I want to be a little more officious about it. I'd like you to limit your choices to no more than five names. That way, some people with longer lists don't have more voting power than others. The artists with the most votes will get my top priority when I start in on this in a few weeks. (Oh, and these results will supersede the results of the previous poll, since this is a more thorough one.)

DeleteSpringsteen
ReplyDeleteOasis
Queen
Rod Stewart
Elvis Costello
Oops, sorry, I removed Rod Stewart just now. I forgot I already posted three albums by him. Perhaps you'd like to vote for someone else instead?

DeleteThanks! I might want to see if someone else cuts the show into mp3s though, since that's a pain in the butt to do. I did that for the FireAid show, only to find other people did it too a few days later.
DeleteSpoilt for choice. But ...
ReplyDeleteAtomic Rooster
Bridget St John
Caravan
Incredible String Band
MOTT THE HOOPLE
Thanks, Paul
Note that I've posted two BBC albums by Elvis Costello already. But I have soooo many more to go, at least ten, that I want to see how he fares on this list. Ditto with Robert Plant. I've posted one already, but I have a bunch still to go, including a Plant and Page one, plus another with him and Alison Krauss. Oh, and ditto with REM too. I've posted one, but lots more to go.
ReplyDeleteBe Bop Deluxe
ReplyDeleteNazareth
Pretenders
Queen
Thin Lizzy
Gary Moore
ReplyDeleteMott the Hoople
Thin Lizzy
Santana
Slade
It really seems that by making your candidate list *even longer* while limiting choices to 5 you're setting yourself up for a lot of dissatisfaction all around.
ReplyDeleteIf *absolutely limited* to choosing 5, it's:
Billy Bragg
Robyn Hitchcock
Loudon Wainwright III
XTC
Peter Gabriel
But that's due to my (presumed, and likely wrong,) perception of "rarity", which you know for certain but we're just guessing. ANY of the following would also make me happy (and I wish you would expand the # of requested names, so that you get a better feel for what would make the most of us happy, which is the point of the poll):
Elvis Costello
Crowded House
Cure
Flaming Lips
Nanci Griffith
Genesis
Emmylou Harris
Police
Radiohead
R.E.M.
Richard Thompson
Thanks so much Paul.
I hear you, but I'm trying to make it fair. If only person lists 20 and another person only lists five, the 20 person is basically getting more votes. Anyway, everything will be posted eventually. Re: rarity, of your top five, nearly all of the XTC is officially release d already, while it's nearly all unreleased for the other four.
DeleteSounds great; all good. If I may, then scratch XTC and add Elvis C. Thanks again so much Paul.
DeleteRichard Thompson

Hi Paul, when I send you the uncut wav of snl50, as requested above. Can you do anything with that.
ReplyDeleteSNL 50 - The Homecoming Concert Live @ Radio City Music Hall - New York City, New York - February 14th, 2025
Thanks. But someone further up in the thread sent it to me already, so no need. In fact, I'm watching that for the first time right now. :)
DeleteHi Paul, I’d love to see some more from Simple Minds, Barclay James Harvest and Radiohead if at all possible? Thanks also for all the hard work you’ve put in over the years, it’s been much appreciated. Thanks, Peter

XTC
Sticking to the requirement for only 5 I would say
ReplyDeleteRichard Thompson
Incredible String Band
Sandy Denny
Wishbone Ash
Loudon Wainwright III
I'm particularly interested in what you have for Richard Thompson.
On a slight tangent I think you once suggested you would provide what was effectively a third volume of 1,000 Years of Popular Music, but that did not materialise. Or did I imagine it ? Keep up the good work.
