Roxy Music: BBC Sessions, Volume 4: In Concert, Hammersmith Odeon, London, Britain, 5-18-1979

The fourth volume in my series of Roxy Music performing for the BBC is a full concert from 1979.

There's a big time gap between the three previous volumes in this series I posted, all from 1972 and 1973, and this one. That's probably mostly because the band had periods of inactivity in those years, in part due to lead singer Bryan Ferry had a successful solo career going on at the same time. In fact, the band disbanded from 1976 to 1978.

At the time of this concert, the band was promoting their latest album, "Manifesto." It was their first album in four years. It contained the hits "Angel Eyes" and "Dance Away." Curiously, "Dance Away," wasn't performed at this concert, but some other songs from the album were, including "Trash," "Manifesto," "Ain't That So," and "Still Falls the Rain."

This album is an hour and 11 minutes long.

Pink Floyd - BBC Sessions, Volume 7: In Concert, Earl's Court, London, Britain, 10-20-1994

I haven't posted this until now because it's very similar to the official live album "Pulse." but if I want to present a full version of everything Pink Floyd did for the BBC, I should post this too.

"Pulse" is one of those live albums that is drawn from a bunch of different concerts. In this case, all of them were taken from the last month or so of the band's 1994 tour. Personally, I prefer this to "Pulse" because it's a real, full concert, warts and all. All the songs are in the order they were played, as opposed to "Pulse," where they were ordered very differently for some reason. 

About seven of performances from "Pulse" were taken from this exact show. Note also that the entire video of this exact show was included on "The Later Years" box set, but only in DVD format. It's never been released in an audio format.

Some people may say the David Gilmour-led Pink Floyd of the late 1980s and after wasn't the "real" Pink Floyd. I think those people have a point, since Roger Waters was such an essential part of the band. But if that's how you feel, you can just look at this essentially as a David Gilmour concert, and that's a very good thing as well.

Different versions of this bootleg exist. For instance, the video version sounds a bit different than the BBC radio version. I went with the one I thought sounded the best, which is the BBC radio one.

David Bowie - BBC Sessions, Volume 12: In Concert, BBC Radio Theatre, London, Britain, 6-27-2000

The next album in my series of David Bowie BBC albums in a particularly special concert. This concert took place two days after Bowie performed in front of a massive audience at the annual Glastonbury Festival. This contrast, by contrast, was extremely small, with only 250 people fitting into the venue.

The people lucky enough to get in consisted of fan club members who won a lottery. But also, a number of elites were allowed in, including stars like Russell Crowe, Meg Ryan, Boy George, Lulu, Bob Geldof, members of Duran Duran, and more.

This concert was officially released twice. The first version came out as a bonus disc on some versions of the album "Bowie at the Beeb." But it was missing five songs. Later, it was included as part of the box set "Brilliant Adventure." This included the missing songs.

However, both of these versions were missing all the banter between songs, and there was a lot of banter. So I used a bootleg version that contained everything. The sound quality of that was just as good as the released versions. However, I did cut out two false starts to songs.

This concert is a must-have for any Bowie fan. Knowing that he was recording this for the radio as well as probable later official release, he really rose to the occasion.

Gladys Knight & the Pips - BBC In Concert, Beverly Hills Theatre, Beverly Hills, CA, 11-12-1983

I had been under the impression that the only music Gladys Knight and the Pips did for the BBC was a few songs here and there. But I recently came across this full BBC concert from late 1983.

As I've mentioned previously, I think soul music in general had a big downturn in the 1980s for a variety of reasons, so this isn't the ideal time for a BBC concert for me. But this is what we've got. At least it came at a strong point for the group. The album they were supporting here, 1983's "Visions," was a commercial and critical comeback. It was their first album to reach Gold status (selling half a million copies) since 1975. That was largely due to the success of the song "Save the Overtime (For Me)," which hit Number One in the R&B singles chart.

This is entirely unreleased. The sound quality is good, though not outstanding.

Midnight Oil - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-25-1993

I had come across this Midnight Oil concert years ago and I considered posting it here, but I ultimately decided against it because I deemed it too short. However, I recently found a different version that had two extra songs on it, plus some additional banter. It added about 13 minutes, and I believe makes it the complete performance.

I had previously posted a 1990 Midnight Oil concert as their only BBC album. Since I've found this, I renamed that to "Volume 1," making this "Volume 2." So you may want to redownload that other one, with changed title and cover art and mp3 tags. Here's the link:

This concert took place a couple of months after the release of the band's popular "Earth and Sun and Moon" album. It was only three years from the other BBC concert I've posted. But the main difference is the inclusion of songs from that album, like "My Country," "Truganini," "Outbreak of Love," and "Tell Me the Truth."

Jackson Browne - BBC Sessions, Volume 4: In Concert, Cambridge Theatre, London, Britain, 10-24-1993

Yesterday, I posted a poll asking about which big name artists I should target as part of my big BBC project. But before I get to those, I want to make a concerted effort to finish off the BBC albums of some other big name artists in the next little while. Here's an example. I recently found two more Jackson Browne BBC concerts, with this one and one that comes after.

At the time of this concert, Browne's 1993 album "I'm Alive" was coming out. In fact, it would be released just two days later. The album was well received critically, and Browne naturally played a bunch of songs from it here. (Though note that this concert was almost certainly edited down from a longer concert to fit in an hour-long time slot.)

Listening this, what struck me is how rocking it is, overall. It's pretty different from his typical folky 1970s mode, but I like it.

Everything here is officially unreleased.
