Unfortunately, it seems we only have part of the late show. This one is 23 minutes shorter than the early show, and it doesn't end with anything sounding like an encore. But it's better to have some of the show than none at all.
Luckily, there is only a moderate amount of overlap between the early and late shows. Just three songs were played in both (at least in the parts we have recordings for): "Who Are You," "I'll Tell You Why that Is," and "Out on the Western Plain."
The music is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent. I had to do a lot of volume adjustment on the version I found, especially boosting the volume of the banter between songs. But that was the only tinkering necessary.
This album is 34 minutes long.

The cover image was taken on May 8, 1973, for the "In Concert" ABC TV show. That's the same source for the cover image used for the early show. I wanted to have similar photos because Hicks probably would have been wearing the same clothes for the early and late shows.

I'm a big fan of Dan Hicks so impressed and happy to see 2 shows on your site (especially from the excellent Ebbets Field series)
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately neither of them work - both sound very garbled (reminds me of Frank Zappa). I downloaded with both pixeldrain and bestfile but got the same result.
The Baez sings Baez is usual pristine sound quality
I just downloaded the links for the early show myself. The BestFile link worked, but the PixelDrain one didn't. Maybe the zip got corrupted or something. I just redid all the links for both shows, to be on the safe side.
DeleteHi Paul
ReplyDeletethanks for quick response
I tried again with both download options for both shows.
(This time there was no message from pixeldrain that the file was inaccessible because it was encrypted)
Unfortunately the sound is still totally garbled and weird.
Don't want to be a nuisance.
Maybe the problem is at my end ??? but all the other downloads are fine, as usual
Thanks for trying
Hmmm. It sounds fine to me. Let's see if anyone else has the same problem.
DeleteThere's a website that says the Hicks shows were Sept 13 to 15, 1973.

That's good, thanks. But we still can't narrow it down to the exact day, it seems.
DeleteI ran a search on Newspapers.com in the hopes of finding a "radio highlights" listing, but all of the Denver newspapers currently archived are from the early 1900s. They add new papers all the time so eventually we may uncover additional evidence.
DeleteAlso, while she's not on this recording, one of the original Lickettes, Naomi Ruth Eisenberg passed away this past March.
If you find out that kind of thing, please let me know. I'm very curious about these Ebbets Field concerts. So far, I've found over 60. The vast majority are from 1973 and 1974, then a small number from 1975, and only one or two from 1976. But the venue ran from 1973 to 1977. I'm wondering did the radio broadcasts taper off, or are there a lot more radio shows from 1975 to 1977 that just aren't circulating now? Cos if that's true, that could be a gold mine of great music.
DeleteI will let you know if I find anything. I did find a single ad for Ebbets Field in the Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegraph from March 1973...but that's an hour drive south of Denver and it doesn't look like they ran anything else that far away. IIRC, the shows were broadcast on KBCO, and Colorado Springs would have been out of the range of an FM broadcast. If newspapers.com adds the Denver Post or the Rocky Mountain News, we will probably find something.
DeleteThere's another website with tons of info about Ebbets Field. Are you aware of this one? They have one page per year. Here's the 1974 page:

No, I'd missed that one. Interesting to see shot of the building, too...skyscrapers are not the usual location for a rock nightclub.
