With a new year about to begin, I thought this would be a good time for me to think a little bit about what music I want to post sooner rather than later. Specifically, I'm thinking about my big BBC project - my emphasis on posting BBC concerts and sessions. I've collected so many hundreds of BBC albums that I feel rather overwhelmed. And there certainly has to be a lot more out there that I haven't found yet.
I'm thinking it would probably be a popular move to post more from some of the famous artists that I have a lot of BBC material for. I just worked up a list of all the musical acts where I have at least four BBC albums collected already, and I haven't posted any of them yet. (Or, in a couple cases like Robert Plant, REM, and Elvis Costello, only posted an album or two so far.) Out of these, which ones would you like to see posted here sooner rather than later? Please only pic a few, or this survey won't help me much.
Caravan
Johnny Cash
Eric Clapton
Elvis Costello
Crowded House
Flaming Lips
Genesis
Emmylou Harris
Incredible String Band
Oasis
Robert Plant
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

Thank you for all you've posted over the years and for this opportunity to wish you and all readers the best for the new year.
In order of interest: Winehouse (I feel the official sessions are incomplete, and I'm sure you have more than they deemed worthy, and with imvho Adele having fallen off, I could always use more Amy), Petty (just make sure everyone knows since your history with the Petty [read: more than just the name] camp seems to have you on priority missile/copyright strike), and Cash, as I have been getting into his work heading backward sort of from the American Recordings which brought him back into my focus. Special mention for Clapton, in a selfish sense, as I have had a ragtag idea bouncing around for years of assembling a version of the Layla album made up of live versions of the songs and only recently had I found a live Layla that gets close enough to muster, though I have had to expand my criteria to Clapton playing with others as the pool of good contemporaneous DATD boots kind of begins and ends with the ones you yourself posted in the last 6 years.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of burned out on Clapton (especially after his Covid idiocy). But some of his BBC concerts are pretty interesting. For instance, some blues concerts with lots of special guests like Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Albert Collins. I doubt there'd be much to help you with your Layla project though.
DeleteFair enough, which is why I threw it in as an honorable mention...
DeleteThanks so much for all the great bootlegs this year! I'm looking forward to more in 2025. For a few to focus upon, I'd say Genesis, Robert Plant (particularly from the 80s) and James Taylor. Thanks again, G.
ReplyDeleteA YES to these, please

ReplyDeleteIncredible String Band

Just wanted to say thank you and extend my gratitude and appreciation for the hard work that you do.

Caravan

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Thin Lizzy
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR WORK! I love what you do! Happy new year! (XTC, JT, REM, Elvis, Tom Petty, Police)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Paul. Thanks for everything you've created so far. My choices would be Caravan, Incredible String Band and Pete Atkin. Peter Atkin? Thanks, John
ReplyDeleteI never even heard of Pete Atkin before, and he's definitely not on this list. I just looked him up. If he did anything for the BBC it isn't easily available, other than two songs I saw on YouTube.
DeleteApologies! I realise he wasn't on the list but I'm forever hopeful. Pete Atkin put the music to songs by (the) Clive James in the early 1970s and then the early 2000s. He actually worked for the BBC in the 1980s/1990s as BBC Radio Light Entertainment Producer & Head of BBC Network Radio. Thanks
DeleteHappy New Year and thank you BUT please stop referring to it as Britain - it's the United Kingdom or Great Britain
ReplyDeleteDon't ask Google! "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a country in Northwestern Europe, off the coast of the continental mainland." I believe the correct terms are Great Britain (England, Wales, Scotland), United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland) and British Isles (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Channel Islands). My 1964 version of the Concise Oxford Dictionary states "Britain, n. (Also Great ~) England, Wales & Scotland". Now what does the adjective British refer to? Happy New Year!
DeleteI *was* wondering where that comment was coming from, as I could not find (not that I went crazy doing so, true) any mention of the word 'Britain' in the post, and I understand the pedant of it, but it ain't that serious LOL
DeleteNot being pedantic - just factual - Every album recorded in the UK has the word Britain on the cover - an easy fix for accuracy
DeleteNoticed that also. My preference would be London, England.
DeleteUgh. I hate to get drawn into this topic again. But all my album locations end with either an independent country, or in the case of the U.S., a state. England is not an independent country, nor is Wales, Scotland, etc... Maybe I should say United Kingdom, but it's too late to change now, after doing this for thousands of occasions.
Delete"Britain" is a perfectly acceptable alternate for the United Kingdom. Look at what Wikipedia says:
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a country in Northwestern Europe, off the coast of the continental mainland. It comprises England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom
I would also point out there's value in brevity. When I can, I prefer using less letters. The reason is if a file name is really long, that causes problems. And that includes the name of the folders the file is in. For instance, when I have names over a certain length, they won't automatically zip up into zip files. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's a pain in the butt. If I used United Kingdom instead of Britain for everything, it would happen more often. No thanks. If anyone has a big problem with it, change the file names yourself.
DeleteClapton ISB Pretenders Thin Lizzy
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great year.
Looking forward to next year (at least the music)
Clapton, Stone The Crows, Thin Lizzy. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteGenesis
Robert Plant
James Taylor
Amy Winehouse
XTC
Thanks!
XTC Petty
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the feedback so far. Since I'm getting so many responses, I'll probably tally up the votes for each.
ReplyDeleteHey Paul -- short list for me would be Elvis Costello, Crowded House and R.E.M. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Paul and thanks for all your hard work! My votes would be for the following from your list: Caravan, XTC, Stone the Crows, Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant & The Incredible String Band. Looking forward to the next batch.
ReplyDeleteThank you for everything, my choices would be Tom Petty & Supergrass
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your fantastic hard work. The write ups are informative and compelling and the thought and editing makes for some unique listening.
ReplyDeleteFor me...
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
The recent vinyl only record store day shows where that catalogue seems to be heading. Let's hope not
A Deluxe After Dark maybe? I know Tom's estate are not so sympathetic to our tastes. Have you heard his Radio series Buried Treasure? 250+ hours it's a music lovers delight...
But The Flaming Lips Yoshima Box Set has several amazing albums within, that would be well worth untangling.
You might approach the backlog by creating your own BBC 'Artists' Boxset? It's an idea?
Have you ever listened to The Verve, The British rock band? I think you'd like them. Also Mazzy Star/ Hope Sandoval/Opal offer up some very under appreciated sounds. Lots of stray tracks.
Personally I'm hoping you finish your Neil Young Eighties albums. The amount of choice is rather mind boggling.
Personally I'm hoping to get set up soon with a bit of music mastering myself.
But if anyone else fancies having a go at getting Syd Barrett s catalogue remixed, please do. Heck. Whilst I'm talking Classic Rock. The Pink Floyd Early years DVD's have some unique performances, especially of Dave Gilmour doing Syd's material. Audio rips would produce a great document of that crossover period. It hasn't been looked at but there's material.

ReplyDeleteKeep those Bots guessing!
True LOL
DeleteThanks a lot for all your work and all the best for 2025. BBC: Incredible String Band and White Stripes could be nice.
ReplyDeleteThanks Paul for all that you make available to us and for me its about rarity here and whilst an XTC fan the BBC sets are well documented and easily found so have everything. The albums that would intrigue me to hear sets from would be : Crowded House ,Incredible String Band ,R.E.M. Loudon Wainwright III cheers for the New Years
ReplyDeleteCaravan, ISB, Petty, XTC all sound good. And a Happy 2025 to you.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forwart to hearing them. You do a wonderful jon
ReplyDeleteThanks Paul, and Happy New Year to you! My choices would be Emmylou Harris, Genesis, REM, Loudon Wainwright, & Petty, although I do fancy listening to Caravan as I love Camel, similar in some respects.
ReplyDeleteMore importantly, how can we see what is in YOUR own wanted column? Some of the people on here must have stuff you'd be interested in?
Happy New Year, Paul!
ReplyDeleteMy votes are for Clapton, Costello, Flaming Lips, Emmylou Harris, Police, R.E.M., Loudon Wainwright III, and XTC.
(And the Robyn Hitchcock-Soft Boys reunion that happened 3 nights ago at the Bowery Ballroom, great video on YouTube already!)

Incredible String Band
R.E.M.
White Stripes
Ecks Tea, see? ( X T C ! )
ReplyDeleteOkay, I just did some tallying. I will keep adding votes as more come in. I decided to give each person a maximum of five votes. So if you voted for more than that (and luckily few did), I only included the first five. I should have said that from the beginning, sorry. Here's the results so far. I never would have guessed the Incredible String Band would be in the lead!:
ReplyDeleteCaravan XXXXXXXX
Johnny Cash X
Eric Clapton XXXXXX

Emmylou Harris XXXXXX

Sorry that doesn't format better. I should mention I'm also surprised Oasis hasn't gotten a single vote so far, especially with them having a big reunion this year. And I want to make clear that I plan on posting all of this stuff, it's just a matter of when. The ones that get the most votes will come first. Please keep the votes coming!
DeleteFlaming Lips, Stone the Crows (Maggie Bell), White Stripes (Jack White). Thanks for the offers! Happy New Year and looking forward to all you do!
ReplyDeleteHi Paul. Just wondering, Have you ever found a copy of Johnny Cash's iconic Viper Room show? I've never heard anything but a few odd snippets. Many thanks for all your blogging.
ReplyDeleteNope, sorry. But I think "The Man Who Couldn't Cry" from American Recordings is taken from that concert.
DeleteYes, it is but apart from the odd YouTube video there's no record of this historical come-back gig. It was obviously filmed and recorded in high quality by Rick Rubin. But it hasn't leaked out. It's the same with Eagles and Joe Walsh material. Very little studio material has gotten into collectors hands.
DeleteHappy new year and thanks for all the great music over the past year. I'd put my vote in for Incredible String Band and Johnny Cash
ReplyDeleteThe Police please
ReplyDeleteBummer. I just realized I should have added Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, and Blur to my list up above. I've found at least four BBC albums for them too.
ReplyDeleteI'd dig some Springsteen on the Beeb LOL :)
DeleteHi Paul, happy new year and many more.
ReplyDeleteAlmost all of your choices are excellent but my three main votes go for:
The Flaming Lips
XTC
Elvis costello
and on a negative note (hope it helps to give you a deifferent view) there are the three less interesting for me:
Texas
Crowded House
Stone the Crows
Cheers!
All Of the above!
ReplyDeleteNah, just kidding...
Emmylou
R.E.M.
Crowded House
Elvis Costello
James Taylor
Thin Lizzy & Loudon Wainwright for me
