BBC Sessions, Volume 2: In Concert, Cambridge Junction, Cambridge, Britain, 9-6-1993

Here is the second, and seemingly last, BBC album from Maria McKee. It's a 1993 concert. I say "seemingly last" because I can't find any others and as I write this in 2025 it appears McKee has more or less wound down her musical career.

My favorite McKee album is "You Gotta Sin to Get Saved." That was released in June 1993, just a few months prior to this concert. So naturally she played a lot of songs from that. Though she did songs from earlier albums as well, including from when she was a part of the band Lone Justice in the 1980s.

Everything from this concert has been officially released on the album "Live at the BBC." About half of that comes from a 1991 concert, and the rest comes from this concert. With the 1991 concert, I was able to find the rest of the concert in decent quality. But I don't know if there was more to this concert, and I haven't found any signs of a bootleg of it.

This album is 51 minutes long.

Maria McKee - BBC Sessions, Volume 1: In Concert, University of Manchester Students' Union, Manchester, Britain, 3-23-1991

Generally speaking, I'm focusing only on posting BBC albums from musical acts where I've already posted at least some BBC albums from them already. But I'm making an exception here since I just put this together and it feels like a very long time since I've posted any music from the great Maria McKee. Besides, I have posted a BBC album by her 1980s band Lone Justice.

A live album has been released called "Live at the BBC." It is made up of selections from two BBC concerts she did, one in 1991 and the other in 1993. I thought that was all there was available, but I recently found a pretty good audience bootleg of the 1991 concert. So I used all the recordings from the official album that I could, since those have better sound quality. Then I filled in the missing songs from the audience boot. (In case you're curious, the songs from the live album are tracks 1, 2, 3, 9, 12, 13, and 17. Together, they make up about 30 minutes of this album.)

To improve the audience boot-sourced songs, I ran them through the MVSEP audio editing program, and removed all of the crowd noise, except for a little at the starts of songs and the usual cheering at the ends of songs. So basically I got rid of all the ambient noise during songs. That helped some, but still, the songs from the official live album sound better. Also, I think the person who taped this had the unfortunate habit of turning the recording off as soon as each song ended. I'm guessing this from the way the cheering sometimes got suddenly cut off, as well as the lack of any banter between songs, except for once near the end. So that's not ideal, but at least we got this much.

My favorite era of McKee's music was early in her solo career, when she was more steeped in roots music, like soul and country. So this is prime McKee for me.

This album is an hour and 14 minutes long.

01 I've Forgotten What It Was in You [That Put the Need in Me] (Maria McKee)
02 Am I the Only One [Who's Ever Felt This Way] (Maria McKee)
03 Shelter (Maria McKee)

Maria McKee - Karen, Goteborg, Sweden, 11-6-1993

I keep intending to post more music by Maria McKee, and then I keep forgetting to do it. I guess it's easy to overlook her because her music career has been nearly inactive for a bunch of years now. But here's something, at least. I have a lot more I plan on posting eventually.

This is a excellent sounding bootleg of a full-band concert to support my favorite album by her, 1993's "You Gotta Sin to Get Saved." Apparently, this concert was played on Swedish radio. But this is a pre-FM version that sounds even better and includes a bunch of songs that were cut from the radio broadcast. This is peak Maria McKee, in my book.

Despite the sound quality, the recording did have one big flaw: the lead vocals were rather low. (As I process live albums from my music collection to post here, I'm surprised at just how many have that problem.) But that was easily fixed, as usual, using the UVR5 audio editing program. So this version sounds better than the others out there.

Naturally, McKee mostly played songs from her "You Gotta Sin to Get Saved" album, plus her previous solo album (just called "Maria McKee") and her time in the band Lone Justice. But she also played some very interesting covers that she never put on album, such as "Free Money" by Patti Smith, "When You Were Mine" by Prince, "Pills" by the New York Dolls, and "Sister Anne" by the MC5.

One weird aspect about this concert is that she had almost no banter between songs whatsoever. She said the word "Hello" before the first song, and that was about it. I thought about it, and then came up with the theory that perhaps the concert was in Sweden she could have guessed that much of the audience wouldn't have been able to understand her English comments.

This album is an hour and 23 minutes long.

01 talk (Maria McKee)
02 East of Eden (Maria McKee)
03 I Can't Make It Alone (Maria McKee)
04 My Lonely Sad Eyes (Maria McKee)

Maria McKee - Acoustic Versions, Volume 2: 1989-1996

Back in 2019, I posted an album of acoustic performances by Maria McKee. Writing this in November 2022, I've come across more acoustic versions, enough to split that album in two. This is the second part of that. But the added songs are split more or less evenly between the two volumes. The old version has been changed and renamed to "Volume 1." If you want this, you should get the updated version of that too. Here's the link:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2019/01/maria-mckee-acoustic-versions-1989-1995.html

The first three and last three songs here are officially unreleased. The first three come from a concert and the last three come from radio show appearances. The middle six are generally from B-sides, though the last one ("My Lonely Sad Eyes") comes from a compilation album.

Not all the songs here are fully acoustic, meaning just her on an acoustic guitar or a piano. Some are even done as a small band, complete with drums. The version of "My Lonely Sad Eyes" is one such example. But still, these versions have much more of an acoustic feeling than the better known album versions of the same songs.

This album is 42 minutes long.

01 Wheels (Maria McKee)
02 Hold Me (Maria McKee)
03 I´ll Be Your Shelter (In the Time of Storm) (Maria McKee)
04 Show Me Heaven [Acoustic Demo] (Maria McKee)
05 Sweetest Child [Acapella Version] (Maria McKee)
06 I'm Gonna Soothe You [Acoustic Version] (Maria McKee)
07 The Way Young Lovers Do [Acoustic Version] (Maria McKee)
08 I Can't Make It Alone [Acoustic Version] (Maria McKee)
09 My Lonely Sad Eyes [Acoustic Version] (Maria McKee)
10 Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye (Maria McKee)
11 Rattlesnake Mama (Maria McKee)
12 This Perfect Dress (Maria McKee)

The cover photo is from a concert in Santa Ana, California, in 1998. That's a big late for this time frame, but I chose it since it shows McKee playing an acoustic guitar.

Maria McKee - The Ocean of Helena Lee - Non-Album Tracks (2013-2018)

I'm posting this next collection of Maria McKee stray tracks in celebration of the news that she has a new album coming out in early 2020. It's about time! Her last album was released in 2007.

I'm not sure why McKee pretty much ended her musical career for over ten years. I guess a lot of it had to do with the fact that she married someone named Jim Akin, who writes, directs, and edits indie films. McKee got involved as an actress and co-producer for two films, released in 2013 and 2015. I heard she's supposed to be the main actress in a third one due to be released in 2019, but I guess it's been delayed.

Anyway, while her musical career was put on the back burner for those years, it didn't end entirely. This album collects the new songs I've found that she did.  Three of them come from various artists collections, and three more come from some of her very rare concert performances. But the majority come from the soundtrack to the 2015 movie "The Ocean of Helena Lee," which is why I've given it that title. That's one of the films mainly created by her husband.

A soundtrack of that movie has been released, but it's very hard to find, since McKee's career has been essentially put on hold for many years, and Akin's films play only to a limited art film crowd. The soundtrack has 33 songs on it, all of them by McKee and/or Akin. As you might guess from the number of songs, most of them are short, often less than a minute long. Frankly, in my opinion, most of them aren't very good as songs. That's because they're not meant to be: they're just background instrumental mood setting music for whatever was going on in the movie at that time.

I've selected a mere seven songs from that album for this album. They're generally longer and prominently feature McKee, although I did select one instrumental. They average in length only about two minutes each, but these are the ones that work best as songs and not just mood pieces, in my opinion.

All in all, this is a pretty eclectic, non-commercial bunch of songs. Clearly, she's been following her artistic muse and isn't worried about selling lots of records. I find it interesting or I wouldn't be posting it here, but it's not for everyone.

By the way, McKee has played the occasional concert in recent years, and I have a good recording of one of them, from 2015. The cover of the Aretha Franklin hit "Save Me" on this album comes from that. I plan on posting the whole concert here later. It occurred just after the release of "The Ocean of Helena Lee" and mostly features her songs from that film. They're largely the same songs I picked here, but they come across differently when they're played live.

This album is 41 minutes long, not including the bonus track.

01 Awkward Age (Maria McKee)
02 Ol' Mother Earth - I Still Exist (Maria McKee & Massar Egbari)
03 Luisa's Lullaby (Maria McKee)
04 I Am Not You (Maria McKee)
05 I Like My Life, I Love You [Instrumental] (Maria McKee)
06 Surf Suit (Maria McKee)
07 My Little Fish (Maria McKee)
08 I'm Here (Maria McKee)
09 Letting It Hang Out Further than Ever (Maria McKee)
10 Jenny Rebecca (Maria McKee)
11 Save Me (Maria McKee)
12 Let Your Light Shine on Me - God Don't Never Change The Songs of Blind Willie Johnson (Maria McKee)
13 Constant Reminder (Sulo & Maria McKee)

For the cover art, I chose a photo that actually is a still of McKee from her supporting actress role in the "Ocean of Helena Lee" movie. The font and text also comes from the movie's promotional material.

Lone Justice - Little Diva and Sugar Jones - Non-Album Tracks (1985-1987)

I just posted a Lone Justice stray tracks album, and said it was the first of two, from 1983 to 1984. Here's the second.

This one covers 1985 to 1987. During that time, they released the albums "Lone Justice" in 1985 and "Shelter" in 1986. Yet they were prolific enough to have this album's worth of different songs as well.

Lone Justice was practically two bands, because between the first and second albums, all the personnel changed except for lead singer Maria McKee and guitarist Ryan Hedgecock. The first four songs are from 1985, and feature the first version of the band. Two of those are from the unreleased concert I've posted already. You can get the full concert here:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2019/08/lone-justice-ritz-new-york-city-9-18.html

Note that another of these first four songs is "Sweet Jane," the Velvet Underground song. I included a studio version on my 1983 to 1984 stray tracks album. This one is a live version. I figured it's worthy of inclusion because it's significantly different, including being three minutes longer.

The rest of the songs are from the second version of the band, from 1986 to 1987. The first two of those are B-sides, and the third one comes from an archival live album. That leaves the last four songs. All of those are unreleased, but are studio recordings in excellent sound quality. They come from recording sessions for the band's planned third album. I don't know why, but McKee decided to break up the band mid-way through those sessions, so a third album never happened. The song "Panic Beach" (which by the way I think is great) would later be recorded for McKee's first solo album. But the other three appear to have never been released in any form, even though they all seem to be good originals.

By the way, the first song on this album, "Go 'Way Little Boy," is a rare case of a song Bob Dylan specifically wrote for another artist, and then never officially released any version of it for himself. "Fortunate Son" and "Cry Baby" are cover versions of famous songs (along with "Sweet Jane"), but I think the rest of the songs are originals.

01 Go 'Way Little Boy (Lone Justice)
02 Fortunate Son (Lone Justice)
03 Cry Baby (Lone Justice)
04 Sweet Jane (Lone Justice)
05 I Can't Look Back (Lone Justice)
06 If You Don't like Rain (Lone Justice)
07 Heaven (Lone Justice)
08 Friends for a While (Lone Justice)
09 Panic Beach (Lone Justice)
10 Little Diva and Sugar Jones (Lone Justice)
11 Much Too Good at Goodbye (Lone Justice)

https://www.upload.ee/files/15262413/LoneJus_1985-1987_LittleDvaandSugarJons_atse.zip.html

I don't know where or when this photo comes from. But it's definitely of McKee during her Lone Justice years, and I liked it enough to use it. As for the album title I chose, I think "Little Diva and Sugar Jones" refer to McKee and Hedgecock, the two founders of Lone Justice, but I'm not sure.

Lone Justice - Rattlesnake Mama - Non-Album Tracks (1983-1984)

I've posted a 1985 concert from Lone Justice, Maria McKee's 1980s band, and I've posted a bunch of Maria McKee's solo stuff, with more to come. But it occurred to me that I haven't posted Lone Justice stray tracks yet, so I'm going to do that now. There are enough so that I've been able to make two albums out of them. Here's the first one.

Lone Justice was formed in 1982, but they didn't put their first album until 1985, the first of only two. It turns out they did a fair amount of recording in 1983 and 1984, and had enough material for an album, but didn't release it, for some reason. Many fans believe their 1985 and 1986 albums were overproduced, and didn't reflect how great the band was in concert. Those fans generally prefer their 1983 and 1984 recordings as being more authentic to their "cowpunk" sound. (Personally, I like their first album, but I think their second one was overcooked.)

The vast majority of songs here have been officially released, but almost all of them came out on archival releases many years later. Only "Never Be You," a Maria McKee solo track released as part of a movie soundtrack, came out at the time. Three of the songs - "Sweet Jane," "The Highway Song," and "Jackson" - are still unreleased. But those are studio recordings, and they have excellent sound. The vast majority of the songs were written by McKee and/or other Lone Justice band members, though there are a few exceptions, such as the above-mentioned "Sweet Jane" and "Jackson," as well as "Working Man's Blues" and "This World Is Not My Home" and probably a couple of others.

All in all, it's very strange that Lone Justice didn't release an album by 1984 that contained many of these songs. I suspect their record company saw so much potential in McKee and her fantastic voice that they wanted to try to hit a home run with her right away, and didn't let the band develop in an organic way. At least we have these recordings.

Two songs have been included as bonus tracks. One, "Sweet Dr. Jesus," was recorded in 1981, when McKee was just 15 years old. She sings it with Bryan McLean of the 1960s band Love, who, believe it or not, was her much older half-brother. The other bonus track, "Mama Said You're Doing Me Wrong," is a fine song from 1984 that I otherwise would have included, but the only recording I know of comes from an audience concert bootleg, and the sound quality is rather rough. By the way, that song was co-written by McKee and McLean.

01 Drugstore Cowboy (Lone Justice)
02 Nothing Can Stop My Loving You (Lone Justice)
03 Dustbowl Depression Time (Lone Justice)
04 Grapes of Wrath (Lone Justice)
05 Rattlesnake Mama (Lone Justice)
06 Working Man's Blues (Lone Justice)
07 Cactus Rose (Lone Justice)
08 Cotton Belt (Lone Justice)
09 This World Is Not My Home [I Ain't Got No Home] (Lone Justice)
10 How Lonesome Life Has Been (Lone Justice)
11 Sweet Jane (Lone Justice)
12 The Highway Song (Lone Justice)
13 Never Be You (Maria McKee)
14 The Train (Lone Justice)
15 Jackson (Lone Justice)

Mama Said You're Doing Me Wrong (Lone Justice)

Maria McKee - Wayfaring Stranger - Non-Album Tracks (2001-2008)

I've got a lot of live Maria McKee music I want to post, but first I want to complete the posting of studio stray tracks. Here's another, covering 2001 to 2008.

McKee's career was doing well up through her "Life Is Sweet" album in 1996. Then she didn't put out another album until 2003's "High Dive." She barely toured or did anything else musical in that seven year gap, which killed whatever career momentum she had going. Then she got busy again, putting out three studio albums and two live albums from "High Dive" in 2003 to "Late December" in 2007. Since then, she's largely been silent, putting out no new albums at all.

I'm not sure why her career has had these ups and downs. Maybe someone who knows more can explain. But this album collects stray tracks that largely deals with that 2003 to 2007 burst of activity. Eight of the 13 songs were officially released, with one of those being a bonus track and the rest coming from soundtracks or other various artists compilations, or duets on other artists' albums.

Of the unreleased tracks, two come from radio or TV shows, and the sound quality of those are excellent. The last three come from bootlegs of concerts, and the sound quality dips some, but it's still good.

This album is 43 minutes long.

01 Wayfaring Stranger (Maria McKee)
02 Trophy Girl (Maria McKee)
03 Tender Even Then (Kristian Hoffman & Maria McKee)

Lone Justice - The Ritz, New York City, 9-18-1985

I've posted some material from Maria McKee's solo career, and I plan on posting a lot more. But so far, I've overlooked her earlier band, Lone Justice. With this post, I'm starting to rectify that.

For a time in the mid-1980s, Lone Justice was considered the hot "it" band. Many people who saw them in concert assumed they would go on to be hugely successful. That never happened, and it's a mystery why. But one can listen to an album like this one and understand why there was all the hype.

This is a really excellent concert. I've listened to a bunch of Lone Justice concerts, and this one is my favorite. It's a bootleg, but the sound is just as good as an official live album from the era. The song selection is excellent too.

I've added "Sweet Jane" as a bonus track of sorts. It's from another 1985 show, but one can easily imagine it was an encore to this one, since the band frequently played it as their encore.

01 You Are the Light (Lone Justice)
02 Grapes of Wrath (Lone Justice)
03 Fortunate Son (Lone Justice)
04 After the Flood (Lone Justice)
05 Ways to Be Wicked (Lone Justice)
06 Working Late (Lone Justice)
07 Go Away Little Boy (Lone Justice)
08 Sweet, Sweet Baby [I'm Falling] (Lone Justice)
09 Don't Toss Us Away (Lone Justice)

11 Working Man Blues (Lone Justice)
12 The Train (Lone Justice)
13 East of Eden (Lone Justice)
14 Wait 'Til We Get Home (Lone Justice)
15 Soap, Soup and Salvation (Lone Justice)

I'm happy to say the photo for the cover art here is a screenshot taken from the very concert the music comes from. That's because a quality video of the show exists on YouTube, and I took it from that.

Maria McKee - If Love Is a Red Dress - Non-Album Tracks (1994-1996)

It's been a long time since I've posted any Maria McKee music, but I definitely haven't forgotten her. So far, I've posted two albums of stray tracks and one album of acoustic versions. This is the next in the stray tracks series, covering 1994 to 1996. There will be a lot more to follow this, eventually.

I'm sure the most well known song on this album is the first one, "If Love Is a Red Dress," because it was featured in the movie "Pulp Fiction." Most of the remaining 11 songs are also officially released, with a bunch of them being B-sides. But four songs here are still unreleased. One is a studio outtake and the other three are from in-person radio station performances, so the sound of those are basically the same as studio recordings.

There's not much more to say except if you like McKee's music from the time period, you'll like this.

This album is 44 minutes long.

01 If Love Is a Red Dress [Hang Me in Rags] (Maria McKee)
02 Hold Me Up (Chris Lizotte & Maria McKee)
03 The Plague (Maria McKee)
04 Anathema (Maria McKee)
05 Her I Shred (Maria McKee)
06 I'm in Love with My Car (Maria McKee)
07 Magdelaine (Maria McKee)
08 Ribbons (Maria McKee)
09 Amnesia Blues (Maria McKee)
10 At Your Feet (Maria McKee)
11 One Hand, One Heart (Maria McKee)
12 If You Were Still Around (Maria McKee)

For the cover art, I used the cover of the "Breathe" single. I changed the text and colorized it from black and white to slightly red.

Maria McKee - Acoustic Versions, Volume 1: 1989

Back in 2019, I posted an album of acoustic performances by Maria McKee. Writing this in November 2022, I've come across more acoustic versions, enough to split that album in two.

Maria McKee was the lead singer of the band Lone Justice from 1982 to 1987. Her solo career effectively started in 1989 with the release of her first solo album, simply called "Maria McKee." She had lots of songs she wanted to do in an acoustic format, because I have enough material from 1989 for this album plus a few more on "Volume 2."

I didn't include any versions of rare songs that happen to be done acoustically. I'm putting those on other McKee albums. This only consists of songs from her studio albums, or from Lone Justice albums, done in an acoustic style. McKee is such a powerful singer that it often is even more impressive hearing her nail these songs without lots of distracting instrumentation.

All the performances here are unreleased. They either come from bootlegs of concerts or radio shows. For the ones from concerts, I did my best to eliminate the sound of cheering so they'd fit in with the radio show ones with no crowd noise.

This album is 43 minutes long.

01 Am I the Only One [Who's Ever Felt This Way] (Maria McKee)
02 I've Forgotten What It Was in You [That Put the Need in Me] (Maria McKee)
03 Panic Beach (Maria McKee)
04 This Property Is Condemned (Maria McKee)
05 Shelter (Maria McKee)
06 Nobody's Child (Maria McKee)
07 To Miss Someone (Maria McKee)
08 Drinking in My Sunday Dress (Maria McKee)
09 Into the Mystic (Maria McKee)
10 Breathe (Maria McKee)
11 Hickory Wind (Maria McKee)
12 Troubled Waters (Maria McKee)

https://www.upload.ee/files/16696638/MARIMCKE1989_AcustcVrsonsVolum1_atse.zip.html

The picture of McKee comes from the video of her playing "Rattlesnake Mama" in 1995. That's not very close to 1989 in time, but this was the cover of the album before I split it in two, so I thought I'd still use it.

Maria McKee - Sweetest Child - Non-Album Tracks (1993)

I posted a Maria McKee album here recently that essentially was a complimentary album to her first solo album, 1989's "Maria McKee." This is a complimentary album to her second solo album from 1993, the great "You Gotta Sin to Get Saved."

Like the previous album I posted, this is a studio album made up of demos, B-sides, live tracks (with crowd noise edited out), and the like. McKee is a great artist with a great voice, so of course this is great too. ;)

Only four of the songs are officially released. "Sweetest Child" is an A-side. "I Wish I Was Your Mother" and "This Thing (Don't Lead to Heaven)" are B-sides. "Opelousas (Sweet Relief)" is from a various artists tribute album. The rest are studio outtakes or from soundboard level quality bootlegs.

This album is 41 minutes long.

01 Sweetest Child (Maria McKee)
02 Silver and Gold [Through the Master's Eyes] (Maria McKee)
03 My Blue Ridge Mountain Boy (Maria McKee)
04 My Old Flame [Acoustic] (Maria McKee)
05 I Wish I Was Your Mother (Maria McKee)
06 Opelousas [Sweet Relief] (Maria McKee)
07 Shake a Hand (Maria McKee)
08 This Thing Don't Lead to Heaven (Maria McKee)
09 Put It Off until Tomorrow [Acoustic] (Maria McKee & Emmylou Harris)
10 Nothing Takes the Place of You (Maria McKee)
11 Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye (Maria McKee)

For the cover art, I used the cover of the "Sweetest Child" single. However, I found that cover disappointingly bland, since it mostly just featured the song title in big letters and McKee's name in much smaller letters, plus a doodle of a baby. It seems especially a shame not to include any picture of McKee, since she's quite pretty. So I did some rearranging and added in a photo of her from the "I'm Gonna Soothe You" single.

Maria McKee - Show Me Heaven - Non-Album Tracks (1988-1990)

If you don't know who Maria McKee is, you're missing out. She's got an incredible voice and all around songwriting and musical talent, but she's never gotten the success she's deserved.

A lot of her best songs have never appeared on any of albums, so as usual, I'm gathering up stray tracks. Most of these are acoustic, based on piano and/or guitar. A few are live tracks that sound like pristine studio quality where I've edited out the clapping. There are a few rocking tracks at the front, plus her fluke hit "Show Me Heaven" at the end.

All of the songs here are officially unreleased, except for the last two. "Everybody Loves a Winner" is a bonus track from a U2 album, since it's a duet with U2, and "Show Me Heaven" is from a movie soundtrack.

This album is 50 minutes long.

01 Wicked Storm [Demo] (Maria McKee)
02 If the Sky Falls Down [Demo] (Maria McKee)
03 Pocket Full of Change [Demo] (Maria McKee)
04 Make Me Want You (Maria McKee)
05 He's Right on Time (Maria McKee)
06 Troubled Waters (Maria McKee)
07 Don't Toss Us Away [Acoustic Version] (Maria McKee)
08 Wheels [Acoustic Version] (Maria McKee)
09 Hickory Wind (Maria McKee)
10 Hold Me (Maria McKee)
11 Promise You Anything (Maria McKee)
12 Everybody Loves a Winner (U2 & Maria McKee)
13 Show Me Heaven (Maria McKee)

I got lucky with the cover. All of the various covers for her "Show Me Heaven" single showed a picture of Tom Cruise from the "Days of Thunder" movie the song was featured in, but this one version took a totally different approach.
