Brandi Carlile - Target Center, Minneapolis, MN, 2-21-2026

Here's a concert that I'm posting (on February 24, 2026) only three days after it took place. One thing that often stops me from posting recent music is sound quality. But this is a rare exception because the concert was broadcast live on a local radio station. That means the sound quality is excellent.

This concert had special significance because of the city it was taking place in - Minneapolis. This was a regularly scheduled stop on Brandi Carlile's national tour, planned months in advance. But with the battles between I.C.E. and the local populace in Minneapolis, Carlile wanted to broadcast this concert on the radio to help celebrate the successful resistance efforts there. It was also livestreamed nationally, and available for a fee for 24 hours. The concert thus raised $600,000 for a non-profit, the Advocates for Human Rights, who are supporting legal efforts of those detained by I.C.E. So good for Carlile! I hope more musical acts make similar efforts.

If you also want to donate to the same cause, here's their link:

https://www.theadvocatesforhumanrights.org/Home

This concert got some media attention. Here's a Rolling Stone Magazine article about it, which mainly consists of an interview Carlile gave right after the concert finished:

Brandi Carlile on Resisting Trump, Protesting ICE in Minneapolis

And here's another article with some further links and photos and so forth:

https://www.jambase.com/article/brandi-carlile-twin-cities-singing-resistance-minneapolis

The song list was pretty similar to other ones on her tour. It mostly consisted of originals, with a few covers thrown in: "Long, Long Time," "Viva la Vida," and "Uninvited." And just for the concert, it ended with "It's Okay to Change Your Mind," which had become a theme song for protesters in Minneapolis. For that song, Carlile was joined on stage by the Singing Resistance, which is a group of hundreds of locals who have been conducting singing vigils to help protest illegal actions by I.C.E.

I didn't change the music here. However, there were frequent interjections by radio DJs between songs to mention the radio station name and so on. I edited all of those out. And there was much longer DJ banter before and after the concert, plus during an unusually long break before the encore. I cut all that out as well.

Thanks to commenter nytvf for suggesting I check out this concert. I might have missed it otherwise.

This album is two hours and 22 minutes long.

Brandi Carlile - Returning to the Campfire, Maple Valley, WA, 10-21-2025

A commenter named nytvf recently mentioned that Brandi Carlile was having a free Internet livestream of a campfire concert. Carlile and her usual musical collaborators, the twins Phil and Tim Hanseroth, sat around an actual campfire in the woods and sang songs and played acoustic guitars. (There was no audience except for some of their children who joined them for the last couple of songs.) Here's the result from just a few days after the event.

This concert had one big sonic flaw: since they were performing in front of a real fire, there was frequent crackling sounds from the fire. It sounded like the pops and scratches of a worn out vinyl record, only worse. I decided not to post this album unless I could get rid of the crackling noises. Thankfully, audio editing technology has come a long way in recent years. First, I ran the entire recording through the Izotope 10 program. It has a de-pop feature. Then I ran the whole thing through the MVSEP program. I split the "drums" from the rest of the music. There were no actual drums, but what showed up on the drum track was the crackling from the fire. I didn't get rid of all of it, but I'd estimate I got rid of 95 percent of it. You'll still here the occasional sound, but nothing like how it was.

This free concert was timed to promote Carlile's new album "Returning to Myself," which was released just three days later. Note the name of this concert given in the promotion, "Returning to the Campfire," is a reference to the name of the album. The album has gotten very good reviews, some of the best of her career. Only three songs were performed from that album, however: "A War with Time," "Church and State," and "Returning to Myself." The rest are originals from earlier albums, plus two cover songs: "High and Dry" by Radiohead and "The Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent (not counting the occasional crackle).

This album is two hours and 11 minutes long.

Various Artists - MusiCares Tribute to Dolly Parton, Los Angeles Convention Center, Los Angeles, CA, 2-8-2019

Here's another MusiCares tribute concert. This one honors Dolly Parton.

I'm running out of MusiCares concerts to post. (I only have one more after this.) The problem is, these annual concerts have small audiences who have to pay big donations to get in, plus there are metal detectors. So audience bootlegs are almost unheard of. The reason we have a worthy recording of this one is that it was broadcast as a one-hour special on Netflix. I streamed the audio from that, and cut it into mp3s. Let's hope this isn't a one-off and other MusiCares will come out in similar ways.

This concert followed the usual format: guest stars singing covers of songs by the person being honored, then that person giving an acceptance speech, then that person playing a couple of songs. In this case though, it seems Parton only sang one song at the end.

Unfortunately, this album is quite short for such concerts at less than an hour. That's because some songs were not included in the Netflix special, and I couldn't find them elsewhere. I know at least Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood sang a duet version of  "Old Flames Can't Hold a Candle to You." I'm not sure if there are others. (As usual, if anyone has any of the missing songs, please let me know so I can include them.)

I also found it a bit surprising that Emmylou Harris didn't sing a song, since she was there. She and Linda Ronstadt gave a short introduction speech for Parton. Perhaps she did sing, and that's another missing song. Or it could be she didn't sing out of respect for Linda Ronstadt, who gave the introduction speech with her, but can no longer sing due to troubles with her vocal chords. Since Parton, Harris, and Ronstadt recorded two "Trio" albums together, it might have been rough on Ronstadt seeing the other two sing but not her. I don't know, that's just a guess.

At least what we have here has excellent sound quality.

UPDATE: On February 19, 2026, I updated the mp3 download file. When I first posted this, it was missing "Jolene," performed by Pink. In my original notes, I commented that this was a shame, because that's one of Parton's signature songs, along with "I Will Always Love You." But a kind person sent me this missing song. Unfortunately, the sound quality is rougher than the rest. Also, it got cut off at the end. The person who sent me the song said it was taped off the TV, and that's when the broadcast ended, so maybe that's all that's available. As a result, I put it at the end. I did my best to improve the sound quality. I used the MVSEP program to split the vocals from the rest and then I ran the vocal through a Reverb Removal filter. That helped a lot, but still, there was only so much I could do.

This album is 50 minutes long.

Various Artists - A Grammy Salute to the Beach Boys, Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, CA, 2-8-2023

A few days ago, a commenter suggested I should post this concert. It so happened that I already had it all ready to go (except for making the cover), which is the case for countless hundreds, if not thousands of albums. But since it was requested, I put it at the top of the pile, and here it is. It's a Grammy salute to the Beach Boys from 2023.

This tribute was shown on prime time television, so that meant it was faced paced, and with lots of guest stars. Famous actor Tom Hanks started things off with a spoken tribute, and actors John Stamos and Drew Carey also had turns to speak.

I found a video of this concert, converted it to audio, and then broke it into mp3s. So I don't think it's circulated as an audio bootleg before. The music is unreleased, and the sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and eleven minutes long.

Brandi Carlile & Elton John - An Evening with Elton John & Brandi Carlile, Palladium Theatre, London, Britain, 3-26-2025

I have to give kudos to Elton John for not resting on his many laurels despite being 78 years old as I write this in 2025. This year, he has a duet album with Brandi Carlile, called "Who Believes in Angels?" All the songs on it were jointly written by Carlile, John, John's songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, and the album's producer Andrew Watt. It's a pretty solid album in my opinion, and it's gotten good reviews. To promote the album, John and Carlile put on a concert which was broadcast on TV, which I'm posting here.

This is a good compliment to that new album, because only four of the songs are from the album (tracks 3, 7, 13, and 15), while the others are the best known songs from John's and Carlile's earlier albums. More specifically, there are five covers of classic John songs and one Carlile song ("The Joke"), plus there's a cover of the country classic "Crazy." Carlile has been a huge fan of John's music for her whole career, so I'm sure she relished the opportunity to sing his songs with the man himself.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 51 minutes long.

01 I'm Still Standing (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
02 talk (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)
03 Who Believes in Angels (Elton John & Brandi Carlile)

Brandi Carlile - Cover Songs, Volume 9: 2022-2023

A couple of days ago, I posted a Brandi Carlile set from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival. That reminded me that I had fallen behind posting cover song albums from her. So I searched the Internet and found enough material for this album. Also, I'm only a couple of songs short for the next one, so hopefully that'll happen soon.

Also, before I talk about the content on this album, note that in recent days I went through all of the earlier albums in this cover songs series and got rid of the applause on the songs that had applause, using the MVSEP program. So you might want to redownload those, because that often makes the songs sound clearer, especially in cases where there's a steady stream of audience noise through the songs.

Furthermore, I recently went through all the Dusty Springfield "On TV and Radio" albums, and used the same technique to get rid of the audience noise there as well. That was a big project, because there are 12 of those albums. And while I was at it, I redid most of the album covers using the Krea AI program, including some outside of that series. So you might want to redownload those as well.

Now, let's turn to the content of this album. A few of the songs here are officially released. They generally come from Carlile's appearances on the albums of other musical acts, and they are covers of songs first done by those acts. Those are "How" by Marcus Mumford and Brandi Carlile (which actually is cowritten by Carlile), "You're Gonna Go Far" by Noah Kahan, "Thousand Miles" by Miley Cyrus, and "Dear Insecurity" by Brandy Clark. The only other released song is "Closer to Fine," done for the 2023 "Barbie" movie.

The rest all are unreleased. All of those come from concerts, and are versions of famous songs. For those, I used the MVSEP program to get rid of as much of the crowd noise as possible, so the live tracks would fit in with the studio ones.

This album is 48 minutes long.

Here are the original artists for each song:

01 Coat of Many Colors - Dolly Parton
02 How - Marcus Mumford & Brandi Carlile
03 Every Day Is a Winding Road - Sheryl Crow
04 You're Gonna Go Far - Noah Kahan
05 She's Got You - Patsy Cline
06 Thousand Miles - Miley Cyrus
07 In My Room - Beach Boys
08 Closer to Fine - Indigo Girls
09 God Only Knows - Beach Boys
10 Dear Insecurity - Brandy Clark
11 Islands in the Stream - Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton
12 Shine - Joni Mitchell

Here's the usual song list:

01 Coat of Many Colors (Brandi Carlile & Pink)
02 How (Marcus Mumford & Brandi Carlile)
03 Every Day Is a Winding Road (Brandi Carlile & Sheryl Crow)
04 You're Gonna Go Far (Noah Kahan with Brandi Carlile)

Brandi Carlile - BBC In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-28-2025

Here we go with another album from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival. This time, it's singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile.

I have posted many a Brandi Carlile album, and there's no denying her vocal talent. So it's easy for me to give this a thumbs-up. She mostly performed her own songs, but she also did two covers she's never released on record, "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Woodstock."

Everything here is unreleased. As I usually did for this festival, I converted video to audio and broke the music into mp3s.

This album is an hour and one minute long.

Various Artists - Gershwin Prize for Popular Song Honors Joni Mitchell, D.A.R. Constitution Hall, Washington DC, 3-1-2023

Last month as I write this, in March 2023, Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell was awarded the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. A TV show of this event was filmed and broadcast a few days ago. That's why there now is an audio recording of it in excellent quality.

Mitchell is 79 years old as I write this, and she isn't in the best of health. In 2013, she had a brain aneurysm and nearly died. She had to relearn how to sing and play guitar from scratch. The good news is that she had made a remarkable recovery. She played a set at the Newport Folk Festival in 2022, and she's scheduled to perform a full concert in June 2023. However, for this show, she only sang for two songs at the end. The rest features other musical artists performing some of her best known songs.

I edited this down a bit. I kept all the music, but I cut out some extraneous material between songs. For instance, there were some extra testimonials about Mitchell by people who didn't actually perform any songs. Garth Brooks was one of them. As another example, there was a brief interview with Mitchell filmed at another time in which she was asked her opinion of jazz musician Wayne Shorter, who had died recently. There also were speeches and introductions by various people, including a bunch of US senators and other politicians. I cut all that out, and only kept comments by artists that were relevant to the songs they were about to play. I also included Mitchell's acceptance speech, which appears to be surprisingly brief, less than a minute long.

This album is an hour and three minutes long.

UPDATE: On August 24, 2025, I updated the mp3 download file. The music is the same. However, I changed the title slightly and used a new cover image. This is so the album look could fit in with other albums in the Gershwin Prize series.

Brandi Carlile - Cover Songs, Volume 8: 2011-2022

Here's yet another volume of Brandi Carlile singing cover songs.

All the songs here are officially unreleased, except the first one. Carlile sings so many cover versions that I've been able to up my sound quality standards. I left a bunch of songs off this that merely sounded okay. For instance, she's done "Rocket Man" by Elton John many times, but I have yet to find a high quality version. Hopefully she'll keep doing sounds like that so I can include them on future volumes.

Everything here was done live in concert. Some of these are from TV or radio station appearances, which helped with the sound quality.

I used the MVSEP audio editing program to remove most of the crowd noise on the songs that had crowd noise.

This album is 52 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Angel Band - Leslie Jordan
02 The Rose - Bette Midler
03 Angel - Sarah McLachlan
04 Space Oddity - David Bowie
05 Creep - Radiohead
06 Woodstock - Joni Mitchell
07 You're Not Alone - Allison Russell
08 Madman Across the Water - Elton John
09 It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World - James Brown
10 If It Makes You Happy - Sheryl Crow

Here's the usual song list:

01 Angel Band (Leslie Jordan & Brandi Carlile)
02 The Rose (Wynonna Judd & Brandi Carlile)
03 Angel (Brandi Carlile & Sarah McLachlan)
04 Space Oddity (Brandi Carlile with Celisse Henderson)
05 Creep (Brandi Carlile with Celisse Henderson)
06 Woodstock (Brandi Carlile)

Brandi Carlile - Cover Songs, Volume 7: 2020-2021

It's been a while since I posted cover albums by Brandi Carlile. I recently did a search for more, and found enough for two more volumes. This is Volume 7, and Volume 8 will follow soon.

All but four of the songs here have been officially released. Those four are: "Who Know Where the Time Goes," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," "Hard Candy Christmas," and "Blue." But those all sound very good, because they generally are from TV or radio station appearances. Note that "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" is only half of the song, because it was performed that was as part of a medley with other artists doing a tribute to Elton John.

I used the MVSEP audio editing program to remove most of the crowd noise on the songs that had crowd noise.

The rest of the songs are from typical sources for this type of thing. There are A-sides (three of them), a B-side, a movie soundtrack song, songs from tribute albums, and a duet from an Elton John album.

I have a duet version of "Take Me Home, Country Roads" on Volume 2 in this series. This is a solo version done in an unusual style for this song.

This album is 53 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Who Know Where the Time Goes - Sandy Denny / Fairport Convention
02 A Beautiful Noise - Alicia Keys
03 Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver
04 Same Devil  - Brandy Clark
05 Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me - Elton John

09 Searching with My Good Eye Closed - Soundgarden
10 I Remember Everything - John Prine
11 Run to Me - Bee Gees
12 Simple Things - Elton John
13 I Put a Spell on You - Screamin' Jay Hawkins
14 Hard Candy Christmas - Carol Hall (first used in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas)
15 Blue - Joni Mitchell

Here's the usual song list:

Brandi Carlile - Home Concerts 5: Still Home for the Holidays, Maple Valley, WA, 12-13-2020

I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it, but there still are albums from the lockdown phase of the Covid pandemic that I haven't posted yet. In this case, it's a lucky thing, because I happened to notice this one with less than a week until Christmas, and it's a Christmas themed album.

This is just like the other Brandi Carlile home concerts I've posted, same location, same acoustic format. But since it took place in mid-December 2020, it's all Christmas songs. Two of the songs are originals: "Christmas 1984" and "The Heartache Can Wait." Carlile is backed by her long-time collaborators, "the twins," Phil and Tim Hanseroth. For "Baby, It's Cold Outside," she duets with her wife, Catherine Carlile.

For two songs, they're joined by the "Compound Kids," which just means the kids of the people living in the compound she lives in. They're horribly out of tune most of the time, as little kids usually are, but I left those songs in because the kids are very cute (as well as wanting to present the entire show).

This album is an hour and 21 minutes long.

Brandi Carlile with Mike McCready - Home Concerts 4: Vote Your Values Benefit, Maple Valley, WA, 10-9-2020

Sigh. I still have a bunch of home concerts from 2020 that I haven't gotten around to posting yet. There's too much good music in the world to keep track of it all! But a couple of days ago as I write this, Brandi Carlile released a new studio album called "In These Silent Days." That reminded me I have more to post from her. So here's the next one.

Hopefully you know who Brandi Carlile is from previous posts here, or from the fact that she's a famous musician. In case you don't know Mike McCready, he's the lead guitarist for Pearl Jam. It turns out he lives near Carlile, and the two of them are very good friends. They did a relatively short acoustic benefit concert together, with Carlile doing the lead vocals and McCready supporting on lead guitar.

That show was only 30 minutes long. But it turns out Carlile played four other songs here and there in the same month, two of them with McCready. So I added three songs at the start and one at the end (to put them in chronological order). Added together, it makes an album that's 48 minutes long. I highly doubt you'd notice this wasn't one concert if I didn't tell you, because the instrumentation is the same, the sound quality is the same, and there's banter throughout.

This album is a nice mix of covers and originals. The covers are "Wish You Were Here" (Pink Floyd), "Red Dirl Girl" (Emmylou Harris), "Madman Across the Water" (Elton John), "The Times They Are A-Changin'" (Bob Dylan), and "Wildflowers" (Tom Petty).

Brandi Carlile - Home Concerts 3: Maple Valley, WA, 7-12-2020 (Bear Creek Album)

I recently posted a home concert in which Brandi Carlile played her entire "The Firewatcher's Daughter" album, in the original song order. This is exactly the same, except it's her 2012 album "Bear Creek." She actually has done most or all of her albums this way during the coronavirus pandemic, but the others are behind a paywall so I won't be posting them here.

As with "The Firewatcher's Daughter," she is supported only by "the twins," Phil and Tim Hanseroth, who have been her main musical collaborators and co-songwriters for most of her musical career. The three of them only play acoustic instruments, so one can consider this an acoustic performance, those it's not a totally solo one.

The sound quality is excellent. There's a lot of talking between songs, with banter between Carlile and the twins. It's clear they're having a lot of fun.

All the songs from "Bear Creek" appear here, except for the last one, "Just Kids," which apparently had some instrumentation they felt they couldn't duplicate. Instead, this ends with "If She Ever Leaves Me," a song she sang on the 2019 album by the Highwomen.

Various Artists - Tom Petty's 70th Birthday Bash, 10-23-2020

Here's something that I think is great if you're a fan of Tom Petty's music at all. And who isn't a fan of Tom Petty's music? Petty died in 2017. Had he lived, he would have turned 70 on October 20, 2020. There has been a yearly tribute concert in his hometown of Gainsville, Florida, on his birthday each year since his death. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a normal concert wasn't possible, so a virtual home concert was held instead, with different artists sending in their cover versions of Petty songs from their homes. The entire concert was well over five hours long. I've cut that down to three hours to make a really strong concert.

Somewhat strangely, this concert was broken into three different parts. The first two parts were only played on SiriusXM satellite radio. The first part consisted mostly of performances by Gainsville musicians. Most of those musicians are obscure, with no officially recorded music whatsoever. In cutting this concert from five hours down to three, I mostly cut from the first part. There are a lot of generic and unremarkable covers of Petty songs by bands you've never heard of, such as the Arts in Medicine Hospital Band and Jeff Slate's Weekend Wilburys. But there were some excellent performances by some unknowns, so I've included those. There are were a few songs by more famous artists sprinkled in early, such as one of my favorites, Larkin Poe, doing a song with Steve Ferrone of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on drums. Another Heartbreaker, guitarist Mike Campbell, also helped with a song by Starcrawler.

For the second part of the concert, a different SiriusXM DJ took over. The focus on Gainsville musicians ended. Instead, more famous musicians from all over were featured, starting with Eddie Vedder, lead vocalist of Pearl Jam. This section continued through the performance by the Raconteurs.

The final and longest section tended to feature the most famous names, though a few lesser knowns are scattered in as well. This last second was made available on video at Tom Petty's official website and other places. You can find all of it on YouTube if you want to watch and not just listen. Since this section is much more widely available, most press accounts mistakenly asserted that was the entire concert. But in fact it was only about half.

Now, let me explain some more about what I chose not to include. There were five songs performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers scattered through the concert. Judging by appearances, they're from different years of Petty's long careers. I didn't include any of those because I felt they didn't fit the rest of the concert. They were typical versions of his famous songs, like "Refugee" and "I Need to Know." Most of the songs were done by other musicians in the concert, so including them would have increased the repetition of songs a lot.

There also were a lot of spoken word sections. I removed nearly all of those. They're nice to hear once or twice, but they don't have much replay value after that, in my opinion. I've only included the between song banter by Mike Campbell & Benmont Tench, the lead guitarist and pianist, respectively, of Tom Petty's band the Heartbreakers. They did a mini-set of three songs, and the banter between the songs was an important part of that, in my opinion. Nearly all the talking was in the last section of the concert. If you watch that on YouTube, you'll hear nice spoken tributes to Petty by his wife Dana, his daughter Adria, Stevie Nicks, a poem by George Harrison's wife Olivia, and more.

Most of the songs sound great. But a few were recorded from homes with poor recording equipment. I rejected a few songs due to sound quality issues. I didn't include a version of "Yer So Bad" by Adam Sandler mostly because it was so poorly recorded. The songs by Beck and Susanna Hoffs also were not recorded well, but I included them because they just barely sounded good enough for my ears, and I particularly like those two artists.

Another problem was that there didn't seem much effort to prevent multiple versions of the same songs. For instance, there were no less than four versions of the song "Wildflowers!" I removed two of them, by the bands Grouplove and the Arts in Medicine Hospital Band, while keeping the versions by Eddie Vedder and Brandi Carlile. The song "Honey Bee" was another problem. There were three versions that I decided to keep, by Larkin Poe, Grace Potter with Reysonator, and the Foo Fighters. There were all good, and all different from each other. I removed some other songs that were done more than once. There are a few other songs with two versions: "American Girl," "Room at the Top," "Runnin' Down a Dream," and "Walls (Circus)." Since the concert is so long at three hours, I figure a few of those are okay.

Almost all musicians played just one song. There are a couple of exceptions though. As mentioned above, Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench did three songs together to end the concert. Norah Jones played two songs. And Margo Price and Lukas Nelson each did one song, but then also did a duet together.

As I mentioned above, this a great concert. All sorts of my favorite musicians were included, and they did excellent versions. Honestly, I could hardly have picked a better line-up myself. If you like Tom Petty at all, please give this a listen!

Another point I want to mention is that the vast majority of the performances were done on or just before the broadcast date, from the musician's homes, but there are a few exceptions. The Gary Clark, Jr. and Jason Isbell performances comes from concerts in 2017. The Killers did their song "American Girl" in concert. I don't know the date or location, but they played that song a bunch of times in concert from 2017 to 2019. Eddie Vedder's version of "Wildflowers" is a solo acoustic version done without an audience, so it sounds much like the others. But it actually was done in 2017 at some point after Petty's death and not made public until this concert.

Oh, and one last thing: as Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench repeatedly said at the very end of the concert, if you're a US citizen, please VOTE in the election on November 3rd!

Brandi Carlile - Home Concerts 2: Maple Valley, WA, 6-14-2020 (The Firewatcher's Daughter Album)

A few weeks ago, I posted a home concert album of Brandi Carlile. It collected a bunch of performances she played at home during the coronavirus pandemic, usually just a song here or two songs there. This album is different. It's a single home concert, consisting of her entire 2015 "The Firewatcher's Daughter" album, plus two extra songs at the end.

For most of her music career, Carliile has closely collaborated with the twins Phil and Tim Hanseroth. Those two have played guitar and bass, sing backing vocals, and often write or co-write songs on her albums. For this concert, it's just the trio of Carlile plus the Hanseroths, all on acoustic instruments.

During the pandemic lockdown, Carlile has been gradually holding concerts in which she plays all of her albums from start to end. Most of these have been available only behind a pay wall, so I won't be posting them here. But two of them have been made more widely available, including this one, so I'll post those two.

To be honest, I'd never heard "The Firewatcher's Daughter" before this home concert came along. But I like what I've heard a lot, so I'm posting this. It's made me go back and listen to the albums that I'd missed. Hopefully you'll feel the same if you haven't discovered this album in its original form already.

The sound quality of this concert is very good. There's a lot of talking between songs, which is often interesting, and gives a lot of information about the songs and how they came to be written.

The two extra songs at the end are "The Story," Carlile's first hit, and "Hallelujah," the classic by Leonard Cohen.

The concert as a whole is an hour and 18 minutes long.

Various Artists - Farm Aid on the Road 2020, 9-26-2020

Here's another recent live stream benefit concert with lots of big names. Farm Aid has been happening every year since 1985, funding a non-profit that benefits Americans with family farms. Of course, the 2020 concert has had to be a virtual event, with artists prerecording their songs from their homes. This is a particularly long concert, almost three hours, after the many cuts I made.

Speaking of those cuts, I didn't cut any of the music. But there was lots of talking between songs, including testimonials from farmers and even some commercials. I cut all that out. Musician Jon Batiste introduced each of the other musicians, and I cut all those intros out too. I also frequently edited down the comments from the artists themselves to the bare bones. My thinking there was I wanted this to be focused on the music, with repeat playability.

In terms of the music, this differs from some other similar benefit concerts during the pandemic in that the big name artists got to play up to four songs instead of just one or two. Neil Young, John Mellencamp, and Dave Matthews all got to play four songs each, and most of the others played two. Willie Nelson and his two sons Lukas and Micah ended the show with eight songs, with them rotating who did the lead vocals. (Particle Kid is the name of Micah Nelson's band.)

the sound is generally excellent. The only exception to that is Neil Young's set. Neil, being weird as he often is, decided to play his songs in a chicken coop in a farm. So there's a lot of ambient noise, especially the clucking of chickens. There was nothing I could do to improve the sound there, but it still sounds okay.

As I mentioned yesterday when posting the "A Night for Austin" benefit concert, there are a lot of these sorts of concerts in 2020, but I pass on most of them. However, like the Austin one, I was impressed by the consistently high quality of music in this one. I encourage you to give it a listen.

Brandi Carlile - Home Concerts 1: Maple Valley, WA, 4-8-2020 to 9-26-2020

What has Brandi Carlile been up to musically during the coronavirus pandemic? I haven't posted any of her music until now, but she's been very busy. She's had a whole series of home concerts where she has performed each of her studio albums from start to finish. The problem for me is that one has had to pay to get access to those. Other than that, she's only played the occasional song here and there. But I've collected those, and I finally had enough for a full 45-minute-long album.

All the songs here are performed acoustically, and without drums. For some of the songs it's just Carlile by herself. For others, she was backed by "the twins," Tim and Phil Hanseroth, who are her long-time musical collaborators.

Most of the songs are originals, and Carlile is a talented songwriter. There are a few covers: "A Change Is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke, "Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You into Heaven Anymore" by John Prine, "I Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty, and "Mad World" by Tears for Fears.

Nothing here has been officially released, but the sound quality is very good throughout.

Various Artists - Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine, Home Concert, 6-11-2020

Singer-songwriter John Prine passed away on April 9, 2020, at the age of 73. He died of the coronavirus. It pains me to admit that I never got into his music, even though I could tell he was a very talented songwriter. The problem I've had is his voice. It just doesn't appeal to me, for whatever reason.

Given that, I've been keen to find instances of other musicians covering his songs, because he is such a top-notch songwriter. So I was very pleased to learn about a home concert on June 11, 2020, entirely dedicated to his songs, featuring lots of well-known musicians, such as Bonnie Raitt, Kacey Musgraves, Brandi Carlile, Vince Gill, Margo Price, Jason Isbell, and many more. Most of them sang just one song, but a few sang two. There's no location for the concert per se, because the various artists performed them in their own homes and then sent in video recordings.

This concert is an hour and 17 minutes long. It contains all the musical performances, but it's far from complete. That's because there was a lot of talking between songs that I cut out. There were a number of famous friends of Prine's who gave spoken tributes as well, such as Bill Murray, Billy Bob Thorton, and Stephen Colbert. While interesting, I don't think those had much repeat listen value, so I edited them out. There also were some snippets of Prine himself talking from when he was younger, but I cut those out as well, for the same reason. There were a few bits of him singing, but only snippets of songs, not complete songs, so those got the axe as well.

I still left in some talking though, when musicians spoke a little bit before playing their songs. I also left in a few cases where Prine's wife, Fiona Whelan Prine, briefly introduced some of the performers. Strangely, she did that for some and not for others, so not every musician gets an introduction.

Anyway, if you're a fan of Prine's music already, you should enjoy these excellent versions. If you're not yet, this could be a good introduction, including most of his best known songs.

As far as sound quality goes, it's variable, based on the recording conditions for each artist. Some are a bit rough. For instance, the Secret Sisters recorded outside, and one can hear birds chirping the whole time. But overall, the sound is pretty good.

Brandi Carlile - Cover Songs, Volume 6: 2019-2020

This is the sixth and final album in my series of Brandi Carlile's cover songs. If you've missed out on the earlier albums, it's not too late to join the party. ;) As I said with the earlier albums, you don't have to be a fan of her original material to enjoy her fantastic voice and excellent taste in cover versions.

This album follows the same patterns as the previous ones in this series. She mostly does a wide variety of classic songs, but there are a few obscurities included as well. This finishes with her version of "Hello in There" that he did on Stephen Colbert's late night talk show last month. As I explained in the first album in this series, seeing her do that on TV was how I got interested in doing this series.

In terms of sound quality, this is also similar to others in the series. Every single song is officially unreleased. The vast majority of them are from concert bootlegs. The sound on the first song, "She's Got You," is a bit iffy, but it gets better from there. I've included "I Will Always Love You" merely as a bonus track due to sound quality issues. But since it features a duet between Carlile and the song's author, Dolly Parton, who is also one of Carlile's musical heroes, I figured it merited at least bonus track status.

I used the MVSEP audio editing program to remove most of the crowd noise on the songs that had crowd noise.

It's kind of cheating to include "Bring My Flowers Now," because Carlile had a hand in writing it. Apparently, it started as a song Tanya Tucker had been trying to finish for 30 years. Carlile produced Tucker's 2019 album "While I'm Livin'" and helped her finish it. But I'm including it here as a Tanya Tucker song, since Carlile hasn't officially recorded a version herself.

This album is 52 minutes long, not including the bonus track.

Here's a list of the original artists who wrote the songs and/or made them famous:

01 She’s Got You - Patsy Cline
02 Angel - Sarah McLachlan
03 Calling All Angels - Jane Siberry
04 We Will Rock You - Queen
05 Over the Rainbow - Judy Garland
06 Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
07 Beware of Darkness - George Harrison
08 Little Green - Joni Mitchell
09 Finish What We Started - Zac Brown Band
10 Everything Is Free - Gillian Welch
11 Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler
12 Bring My Flowers Now - Tanya Tucker
13 Hello in There - John Prine

I Will Always Love You - Dolly Parton / Whitney Houston

Here's the usual song list:

01 Angel (Brandi Carlile & Emmylou Harris)
02 Calling All Angels (Brandi Carlile with Tiffany Hanseroth)
03 We Will Rock You (Brandi Carlile)
04 Over the Rainbow (Brandi Carlile)

Brandi Carlile - Cover Songs, Volume 5: 2017-2019

So far, I still haven't gotten much feedback on these Brandi Carlile covers albums. If you're enjoying this (and/or these sorts of covers collections in general), please give a shout out.

Anyway, I'm digging Brandi's covers. I think she has a great voice, and knows how to use it. So here's Volume 5. This one isn't very different from the others in this series. Mostly, she covers disputably classic songs, but she also throws in a couple of surprises.

One example of a lesser known choice is "Rich." Technically, it shouldn't be here, since Carlile co-wrote it with two of her band members. But I'm including it because it's a nice song, and she's never performed it except this version, which has only been available through an Internet website. She wrote it for Tanya Tucker and Tucker did it on her 2019 album "While I'm Livin'," which Carlile produced. So in that sense, one can see it as a cover of a Tanya Tucker song.

I also have to mention that not only do I appreciate Carlile's choice in cover songs, I also am impressed with her breadth of styles. How many people would cover both the "uncool" John Denver and the grunge band "Soundgarden?"

I used the MVSEP audio editing program to remove most of the crowd noise on the songs that had crowd noise.

This album is 54 minutes long, not including the bonus track.

Here are the artists who did the originals:

01 I Think It's Going to Rain Today -  Randy Newman
02 Rich - Tanya Tucker (kind of!)
03 Jolene - Dolly Parton
04 Rocky Mountain High - Sunshine On My Shoulders - John Denver
05 Amazing Grace - traditional
06 Madman Across the Water - Elton John
07 Respect - Aretha Franklin
08 A Case of You - Joni Mitchell
09 Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You - traditional / Led Zeppelin
10 Down to You - Joni Mitchell
11 Travelin' Light - Dierks Bentley
12 Do Right Woman, Do Right Man - Aretha Franklin
13 Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden

Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode

"Personal Jesus" is separated from the rest because it's only a bonus track. I downgraded it to that because I felt it was borderline in terms of sound quality. But, in contrast to some other songs that didn't make the cut, I figured it was an interesting choice in covers that some people might want to hear.

Here is the usual song list:

01 I Think It's Going to Rain Today (Brandi Carlile)
02 Rich (Brandi Carlile)
03 Jolene (Brandi Carlile)
04 Rocky Mountain High - Sunshine on My Shoulders (Brandi Carlile)
05 Amazing Grace (Brandi Carlile with the Secret Sisters)
06 Madman Across the Water (Brandi Carlile)
07 Respect (Brandi Carlile & Jim James)
08 A Case of You (Brandi Carlile)
09 Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You (Brandi Carlile)
10 Down to You (Brandi Carlile)
11 Travelin' Light (Dierks Bentley & Brandi Carlile)
12 Do Right Woman, Do Right Man (Brandi Carlile)
13 Black Hole Sun (Brandi Carlile, Soundgarden & Peter Frampton)
