Ron Sexsmith - Reasons to Believe, Volume 8: 2016-2023

Back in early 2024, I started posting this series of non-album tracks by Ron Sexsmith. This was the idea of a musical associate, Pete the Greek, and I wouldn't have done it without his instigation and continual help. Finally, after a year and a half, the series comes to an end with this eighth volume. (Or at least it's ending until Sexsmith puts out another albums' worth of stray tracks, but that could take years.)

This album is a fairly even split between released and unreleased songs. The released ones are tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10 and 11. One of those, "Flowers All Along the Pathway," is a bonus track from the Sexsmith album "The Vivian Line." Most of the rest are appearances on albums by other musical acts, or on various artists compilations.

That leaves the unreleased songs, which are the remaining six. These are all from concerts, home concerts, or radio shows. For the ones that had audience applause, I got rid of that using the MVSEP program to help them fit in with the other songs without applause.

Thanks again to Pete the Greek for all his help with this series, and sorry it took so long to post it all.

This album is 49 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Twilight of the Season - Hidden Cameras with Ron Sexsmith
02 Don't Make Promises - Tim Hardin
03 Stay Loose - Gordon Lightfoot
04 Sorrow Town - Jamie Lawson & Ron Sexsmith

Ron Sexsmith - Reasons to Believe, Volume 7: 2013-2016

Man, I've been really painfully slow posting the rest of this series of non-album tracks by Ron Sexsmith. But I finish everything eventually. This is the seventh and second to last album in this series.

All but two of the songs here have been officially released. Tracks 1, 2, 3, and 5 are bonus tracks from the "Forever Endeavor" album, with track 5 appearing only on deluxe edition versions. The other songs are from a bunch of different sources, like various artists compilation albums, soundtracks, and appearances on other musical acts' albums. As usual, check out the mp3 tags for more details.

The two unreleased songs are "Sisters of Mercy," from a Leonard Cohen tribute concert in 2013, and "Wait until the Sun Comes Up," from a concert in 2014.

As with past volumes, I want to mention that this series was the idea of Pete the Greek, and I wouldn't have done it without his instigation and continual help.

This album is 47 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Real Pandora - Ron Sexsmith
02 Least of My Worries - Ron Sexsmith
03 Wee Small Hours - Frank Sinatra
04 Pennies from Heaven - Bing Crosby
05 Life After a Broken Heart - Ron Sexsmith

12 Don't Wait - Mel Parsons with Ron Sexsmith

Ron Sexsmith - Reasons to Believe, Volume 6: 2012-2013

It's been almost a year since I last posted a volume in this series of non-album track albums for singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith. To be honest, I just kind of forgot about it, as I sometimes do with these things. Luckily, I recently remembered. I've made two more volumes after this, so hopefully I won't take nearly as long to get to those.

Seven out of the 14 songs here are officially unreleased. "Small Emotions" and "Family Tree Theme Song" are from TV shows. The other unreleased songs, tracks five through eight and 14, are either from concerts (with the audience cheering removed with the MVSEP program) or radio shows.

As for the officially released songs, most of them come from appearances on other artist's albums. A couple are from tribute albums.

As with past volumes, I want to mention that this series was the idea of Pete the Greek, and I wouldn't have done it without his instigation and continual help.

This album is 49 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Small Emotions - Ron Sexsmith
02 Regrets - Abalone Dots & Ron Sexsmith

Graham Gouldman, Fran Healy, & Ron Sexsmith - Songwriters' Circle, Bush Hall, London, Britain, 3-4-2011

I really like these BBC "Songwriters' Circle" concerts, so here's another one. This one stars Graham Gouldman of 10cc, Fran Healy of Travis, and Ron Sexsmith.

A while back, I collaborated with a person named Pete the Greek on a series of non-album tracks by Ron Sexsmith. (Now that I think about it, I still have a couple of those I haven't posted yet. I'll try to get to that soon.) In the process of doing that, we came across this concert. But unfortunately, all we could find were YouTube videos of individual songs (and luckily, most of the banter before each song). We found all the Healy and Sexsmith songs, but we couldn't find two songs Gouldman was known to perform here: "Look Through Any Window" and "I'm Not in Love." Eventually, I posted the concert, with substitutes for the two missing songs.

Then, in December 2025, a kind musical helper sent me the full concert with great quality. So I redid this concert from scratch, using that new source. Not only was I able to recover the two missing songs, I also recovered some other missing bits, such as banter between songs.

By the way, Gouldman took part in another one of these "Songwriters' Circle" shows back in 1999. I plan to post that one eventually. In that one, he did do an acoustic version of "I'm Not in Love."

This album contains three bonus tracks. These are the legacy of the earlier version I'd posted. Since I'd posted a couple of extra Gouldman songs to make up for his missing ones, those no longer fit with the main album, since they come from another source. (Specifically, they come from a soundboard bootleg of a 10cc concert from Swansea in Wales, also from 2011, where Gouldman was essentially the opening act for his own 10cc band, playing a handful of songs he'd written before 10cc in an acoustic format.) I didn't want to disappear them completely though, so I've made them into bonus tracks. Their sound quality is just as good as the rest.

This unreleased concert is an hour and six minutes long, not including the bonus tracks.

The cover photo is from this exact concert. It's actually a composite of four screenshots I took from one of the videos from this concert. The video was so low-res, that I took a screenshot of the whole scene, then I found different points when there were close-ups of each head, and took screenshots of them. I resized the heads and pasted them in, so those parts would be more accurate. Finally, I ran the composite version through the Krea AI program to improve the sharpness some.

Ron Sexsmith - Reasons to Believe, Volume 5: 2009-2012

Once again, here's another in a long series of stray tracks albums for Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith.

If you like the previous volumes, you should like this one too. I don't have much else to say, other than to explain where the songs come from.

All but the last two songs have been officially released. Those two are from concert bootlegs. The other songs are generally from tribute albums, appearances on albums by other musicians, and bonus tracks. Tracks 7 through 9 are bonus tracks from the 2011 album "Long Player Late Bloomer."

There are more originals on this one than the previous volumes, I think. The three bonus tracks mentioned above are originals. So are the two songs with Carlos Fregtman (tracks 4 and 5). "Love Shines" is another original, from the "Long Player Late Bloomer" album, but track 12 is a solo acoustic version done in concert.

"Day Is Done," originally by Nick Drake, is the sole bonus track. It's a lovely version, but unfortunately it's from an audience concert bootleg, and the sound quality isn't as good as the rest.

Thanks again to Pete the Greek for help in putting this together and figuring out the original artists for each song, as he's done for the whole "Reason to Believe" series.

This album is 45 minutes long, not including the bonus track.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Crayon Angels - Judee Sill
02 Broken in Two - Krista Hartman
03 When I Need You - Leo Sayer
04 Ghost of a Chance - Carlos Fregtman & Ron Sexsmith
05 Thoughts and Prayers - Carlos Fregtman & Ron Sexsmith

10 I Surrender Dear - Bing Crosby
11 Give Me Love [Give Me Peace on Earth] - George Harrison
12 Love Shines - Ron Sexsmith

Day Is Done - Nick Drake

Here's the usual song list:

01 Crayon Angels (Ron Sexsmith)
02 Broken in Two (Krista Hartman & Ron Sexsmith)
03 When I Need You (Albert Hammond with Ron Sexsmith)
04 Ghost of a Chance (Carlos Fregtman & Ron Sexsmith)

Ron Sexsmith - Reasons to Believe, Volume 4: 2006-2009

Here's another album of Ron Sexsmith's non-album tracks, with the vast majority of them covers. I hope you're enjoying this series, because there are a bunch more volumes to come.

All but one song here has been officially released. That one song is the last one, "Ring Them Bells," which comes from a concert bootleg.

Four songs are extras for his 2008 album "Exit Strategy of the Soul." Tracks 6 and 7 are bonus tracks available only on the Japanese release (and boy were they hard to get!), while tracks 8 and 9 are more conventional bonus tracks. The other songs are a typical mix of appearances on other artists' albums, various artists collections, and movie soundtracks.

I think the song "Fall at Your Feet" deserves special mention. This was done for a live album by a flamenco guitar virtuoso named Jesse Cook. With Sexsmith on vocals and Cook on guitar, I dare say they actually outdid the excellent Crowded House original.

Note that I'd be stretching things to call this a covers album, because six of the songs were written by Sexsmith, more than on any of the previous volumes in this series.

Once again, thanks to Pete the Greek for his help putting these albums together.

This album is 48 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Love Henry - traditional
02 Dumptruck - Ron Sexsmith
03 Philadelphia - Neil Young
04 Moonlight Becomes You - Bing Crosby
05 Fall at Your Feet - Crowded House
06 Here Comes My Baby - Cat Stevens

10 Devoted to You - Everly Brothers
11 Something to Hold On To [At Christmas] - Ron Sexsmith
12 Simple Grace - Chris Warren
13 Whatever It Takes - Ron Sexsmith
14 Ring Them Bells - Bob Dylan

Here's the usual song list:

01 Love Henry (Ron Sexsmith with Don Kerr)
02 Dumptruck (Ron Sexsmith)
03 Philadelphia (Ron Sexsmith)
04 Moonlight Becomes You (Ron Sexsmith)
05 Fall at Your Feet (Jesse Cook & Ron Sexsmith)

Ron Sexsmith - Reasons to Believe, Volume 3: 2002-2005

This is Volume 3 of my Rox Sexsmith stray tracks collection. It mostly consists of cover versions, but there are a few originals in there.

All but two of the songs are officially release. Those two are "Guess Things Happen That Way" and "Wrecking Ball." They're from concert bootlegs. But they're probably from soundboards, because their sound quality is excellent.

Regarding the officially released songs, six of them come from the 2004 album "Has-Been and Wives:" tracks 5, 8, 9, 11, 13, and 15. Technically, this album was credited to "the Kelele Brothers," but that's just another name for Sexsmith and his backing band. They did another album in 2001, and I included some songs from that on the last album in this series. As with that volume, I've only included the songs where Sexsmith is the lead vocalist. I've scattered them between some other songs because the sound is ukelele-centric, and I wanted to spread that out.

Regarding the other songs, they're generally from various artists collections and appearances on other artists' albums. For instance, there are songs from tribute albums to Stephen Foster, NRBQ, and Gordon Lightfoot. There's also one song, "All Too Much," that's a bonus track.

Note that the first song, "Wastin' Time," appears on his debut studio album "Ron Sexsmith." But this is a piano-centric version that I figured was different enough to merit inclusion.

As with the rest of this series, thanks to Pete the Greek for help finding the songs and organizing the information about them.

This album is 50 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Wastin' Time [Piano Version] - Ron Sexsmith
02 Maybe This Christmas - Ron Sexsmith
03 Guess Things Happen That Way - Johnny Cash
04 Drifters - Gordon Lightfoot
05 Chick Habit - Serge Gainsbourg / April March
06 All Too Much - Ron Sexsmith
07 Wrecking Ball - Neil Young
08 Father Christmas - Kinks
09 Boredom and Loneliness - Ron Sexsmith
10 Comrades Fill No Glass for Me - Stephen Foster
11 I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore - Randy Newman / Dusty Springfield
12 My Girlfriend's Pretty - NRBQ
13 Blue, Red and Grey - Who
14 Los Mismo Que Yo [If Only] - Alex Cuba & Ron Sexsmith
15 One Brown Mouse - Jethro Tull
16 Song No. 6 - Ane Brun

Here's the usual song list:

01 Wastin' Time [Piano Version] (Ron Sexsmith)
02 Maybe This Christmas (Ron Sexsmith)
03 Guess Things Happen That Way (Ron Sexsmith)
04 Drifters (Ron Sexsmith)

Ron Sexsmith - Reasons to Believe, Volume 2: 1998-2002

I recently started posting a big series of albums containing all the songs by Ron Sexsmith I could find that aren't on any of his studio albums, including his rarities collection simply called "Rarities." Here's a second volume.

As with the first volume, the vast majority of the songs are cover versions, but not all of them are. Two songs here, tracks one and three, were written by Sexsmith.

All but four of the songs were officially released. As usual with all the albums I post at this blog, check out the mp3 tags for details. It's the typical mix of songs from singles, various artists collections, appearances on other artist's albums, and the like.

One special case here is that tracks 11, 12, and 13 are from a 2001 album by the Kelele Brothers called "Escape from Bover County." In fact, this band was made up of Sexsmith and members of his backing band, with an emphasis on prominently using the ukelele. They recorded some songs just for fun while in hotel rooms during a concert tour. The album gave the backing band members a chance to shine and sing lead vocals. I selected just the songs I liked with Sexsmith as the lead vocalist.

As for the four unreleased songs, those are tracks five through eight. They all come from different 1999 concerts. The sound quality is very good on those, and I removed the crowd noise as best I could (using the MVSEP program) to help those songs fit in with all the studio tracks.

This album is 48 minutes long.

Here's the list of the original artists for each song:

01 You Alone - Ron Sexsmith
02 Ships Go Out - Tom T. Hall
03 Camelot Towers - Ron Sexsmith
04 Reason to Believe - Tim Hardin
05 Everyday I Write the Book - Elvis Costello
06 Snowbird - Anne Murray
07 Factory - Bruce Springsteen
08 Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye - Leonard Cohen
09 Lucid Dreams - Captain Funk
10 Always - Shea Seger
11 The Girl Can't Help It - Bobby Troup / Little Richard
12 Philadelphia Baby - Charlie Rich
13 The Joker [That's What They Call Me] - Billy Myles
14 An Elephant Insect - Shonen Knife
15 This Is Where I Belong - Kinks

Here's the usual song list:

01 You Alone (Ron Sexsmith)
02 Ships Go Out (Ron Sexsmith)
03 Camelot Towers (Ron Sexsmith)
04 Reason to Believe (Ron Sexsmith)
05 Everyday I Write the Book (Ron Sexsmith & Elvis Costello)

Ron Sexsmith - Reasons to Believe, Volume 1: 1995-1998

A few months ago, a follower of this blog named Pete the Greek contacted me with an idea. He's a huge fan of singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith, and he suggested I made some albums of all of Sexsmith's non-album tracks. Now, I'm a fan of Sexsmith's music, but not a huge fan. I don't even have all of his studio albums. But Pete the Greek sent me a collection of non-album tracks, and I thought they were very good. I actually liked them more than a lot of his studio albums. It helps that a lot of them are cover songs, and Sexsmith has excellent taste in covers.

So I began working with Pete the Greek on this, and things kind of snowballed. I think we originally started with four albums of material, but ended up with eight! That's a lot for a singer-songwriter who isn't even that well known. But it's all good stuff, in my opinion. Actually, I consider this very similar to the series of Marshall Crenshaw covers albums I've been posting, with a similar number of albums. Both of them are musician's musicians with deep, deep record collections. But this is somewhat different in that it includes all of Sexsmith's non-album tracks. Most are covers, but there are a fair number of originals. The only thing I didn't include was songs from his 2003 compilation album "Rarities." That's mostly a collection of B-sides from the earlier part of his music career.

I'm calling this series "Reasons to Believe." I was looking over the song titles on the different albums I made, and I noticed he did the Tim Hardin classic "Reason to Believe." That made me think of "Reasons to Believe," as in, hopefully these albums will give you additional reasons to believe that Sexsmith is a very talented musician and songwriter, if you weren't aware of that already.

Note that Sexsmith has also posted hundreds of cover versions and alternate versions of his originals to his YouTube channel over the years. I'm not including ANY of that here, because that's an entirely different can of worms. I have posted two albums of Kinks covers mostly drawing from that. Perhaps I'll make other albums from that in the future, we'll see.

Thanks again to Pete the Greek. Without his help every step of the way, this series of albums wouldn't have happened.

If you want to know the sourcing for all the songs, check the mp3 tags for details (which is the case for ALL the albums I post here, by the way). But, in brief, tracks 2 and 11 through 13 are the officially released ones, from B-sides and other artists' albums. The rest come from a demo (track 10), in-person radio sessions (tracks 1, 4, and 5) or concert bootlegs (the rest). When it comes to concert recordings, I've used the new MVSEP audio editing program to wipe out the crowd noise as much as possible, so hopefully they all sound like studio versions.

This album is 50 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go - Bob Dylan
02 You're Learning - Ron Sexsmith
03 New Pony - Bob Dylan
04 Ribbon of Darkness - Gordon Lightfoot
05 Caroline, No - Beach Boys
06 To Ramona - Bob Dylan
07 Windows of the World - Burt Bacharach & Hal David / Dionne Warwick
08 Everyday I Write the Book - Elvis Costello
09 Love Minus Zero-No Limit - Bob Dylan
10 Dirty Windows [Demo] - Ron Sexsmith

Various Artists - Tower of Song - A Memorial Tribute to Leonard Cohen, Centre Bell, Montreal, Canada, 11-6-2017

Leonard Cohen died in 2016 at the age of 82. Exactly one year later, his son Adam Cohen put on a memorial concert. Leonard had specifically asked that such a concert be held in Montreal, Canada, so that's where it happened. It was broadcast on Canadian television and radio through the CBC, and later sold as a DVD, but it has never been released as an album. But it was professionally recorded thanks to the broadcasts, so it sounds great here.

This album is based on the CBC radio broadcast, which had great sound quality. (The DVD misses a bunch of songs.) However, there was a big problem with that broadcast, in that someone did a voiceover to talk over all the applause between songs, usually to introduce the next performer. This was very annoying since it was clearly added later and not part of the actual concert. Worse, the voice sometimes went over to the start of the next song. So thank God for audio editing programs like UVR5. I was able to use that to wipe out the voiceover which keeping the underlying applause and/or music. This means there are no verbal introductions of the performers. I don't know if that was the case in the actual concert or not. But you can just look at the song list here.

I also had a few problems with some missing music. Two songs weren't included in the radio broadcast, for whatever reason: "Tower of Song" and "Everybody Knows." That's when the DVD came in handy, because those ones happened to be included. But there was a problem with another song that I couldn't solve, "Closing Time." This was the last song of the concert, and it appears the radio show ran out of time, because it cut the song off before it ended. To make matters worse, the DVD didn't include that song. So there was nothing I could do. I added a chorus to the end of the song so the ending wouldn't seem so weird (which is why it has "[Edit]" in the title. But I didn't have a way to give the music a proper ending after that, so I still had it fade out.

Now, let's get to the performers. I really like the list of performers, including some big names, like Sting and Elvis Costello. But one has to put a kind of asterisk next to the performance of "Tower of Song," with no less than Willie Nelson, Celine Dion, Peter Gabriel, Chris Martin & Leonard Cohen all singing lead vocals on it! That was prerecorded elsewhere, probably due to those artists not being able to attend the concert in person. And note the involvement of Cohen on that song. I'm guessing a recording from a concert before his death was used and cleverly edited in to go with the other voices. A similar recorded performance happened to Cohen's voice on "A Thousand Kisses Deep."

Note that I wanted to keep the focus on the music, so I cut out some non-musical bits. For instance, there was a long speech by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau. I removed all of that. However, I did keep the recitation of a poem by actor Seth Rogen, since that was an interesting poem by Cohen.

If you're a fan of Cohen's songs at all, you really should give this a listen. Pretty much all the performances were solid, though I think k. d. lang was the highlight with her version of "Hallelujah."

This album is an hour and 57 minutes long.

01 Dance Me to the End of Love (Sting)
02 Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye (Feist)
03 Who by Fire (Patrick Watson)
04 I'm Your Man (Sharon Robinson)
05 Democracy (Lumineers)

07 Suzanne (Ron Sexsmith)

11 Hallelujah (k. d. lang)
12 Tower of Song [Recording] (Willie Nelson, Celine Dion, Peter Gabriel, Chris Martin & Leonard Cohen)
13 Sisters of Mercy (Sting)
14 Chelsea Hotel No. 2 (Lana Del Rey & Adam Cohen)

16 Everybody Knows (Courtney Love)

The cover is the poster for this concert. However, I had to make some changes to get a rectangular poster to fit into a square space. I repositioned some things using Photoshop. I also updated some of the artist names at the bottom to better reflect who actually performed at the concert. For instance, it had mentioned Phillip Glass, who didn't show, and failed to mention some, like Ron Sexsmith, Courtney Love, and Bettye LaVette, who did show.

Ron Sexsmith - Acoustic - Frankfurter Hof, Mainz, Germany, 9-28-2003

In recent weeks, I've shared two albums of singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith performing cover songs by the Kinks. When I posted those, I mentioned I didn't actually know his original material very well, and several people recommended that I check him out more closely.

The problem with that is that even though he's released about a dozen albums since 1995, he's never put out anything remotely resembling a best of collection, so it's hard to get an introduction to him. As you may have noticed from this blog, I have a special fondness for solo acoustic versions of songs. I found a 2003 soundboard bootleg concert of Sexsmith playing in the solo acoustic format, so I decided to check that out. I like it a lot. So I've decided to share it here.

It seems to contain most of his most popular songs. However, it doesn't contain what is probably his most famous song of all, "Secret Heart." I think that sound is outstanding. I'd put it up there as one of the best written singer-songwriter songs of the past few decades! So I was very bummed it wasn't played at the concert. But I found a very good fix. It turns out he did perform that song in solo acoustic format in 2003, the same year as the concert, and I found a high quality version of that. So I've added it at the end (where it probably should have been as the final encore anyway! ;) ).

As usual, I made the talking between songs into their own tracks. But the recording sounded so good that I didn't have to make any other tweaks. However, I chose to make one key edit. For the song "Gold in Them Hills," he started the first verse, forgot the words, then started the song over again. I edited it so it sounds like one seamless performance without that mistakes, because who wants to listen to clumsy mistakes?

One last thing. The only cover he does here, I think, is "Guess Things Happen that Way," by Johnny Cash.

01 Former Glory (Ron Sexsmith)
02 talk (Ron Sexsmith)
03 These Days (Ron Sexsmith)
04 talk (Ron Sexsmith)
05 Honest Mistake (Ron Sexsmith)
06 talk (Ron Sexsmith)
07 You Were There (Ron Sexsmith)
08 talk (Ron Sexsmith)
09 Just My Heart Talkin' (Ron Sexsmith)
10 There's a Rhythm (Ron Sexsmith)
11 talk (Ron Sexsmith)
12 Right About Now (Ron Sexsmith)
13 Disappearing Act (Ron Sexsmith)
14 Gold in Them Hills [Edit] (Ron Sexsmith)

I couldn't find any photos of the exact concert for the cover art. But I did find a good one that's also from 2003, which comes from a concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

Ron Sexsmith - Ron Sexsmith Sings Ray Davies, Volume 2: 2017-2020

A couple of weeks ago, I posted an album of Ron Sexsmith performing an album of Kinks cover songs. They haven't been officially released, but they have been posted at his YouTube page, along with lots of other cover versions. This is a second volume of exactly the same.

There's not much to say that I didn't say with that earlier post. If you liked that, you should definitely like this. Personally, I prefer this volume, because Sexsmith digs deeper with even more versions of unexpected Kinks songs that go beyond their hits. For instance, where else will you find acoustic versions songs like "Underneath the Neon Sign" or "Killer's Eyes?" Even a lot of big Kinks fans aren't that familiar with such songs. One gets to enjoy all of these songs in a new way by hearing them in the stripped-down acoustic format.

This album is 54 minutes long.

UPDATE: On December 2, 2022, I updated the mp3 download file. I had been hoping to create a third volume. I had eight more songs ready to go. But it's been two years since he last did a Kinks cover, and the songs he posts has mostly switched to originals. So instead I've moved four songs from here to Volume 1, and posted the eight songs here. That's made both albums about ten minutes longer. I also slightly changed the title and cover art because the years involved have changed somewhat.

01 Tired of Waiting for You (Ron Sexsmith)
02 Get Back in Line (Ron Sexsmith)
03 Oklahoma U.S.A. (Ron Sexsmith)
04 Sitting in the Midday Sun (Ron Sexsmith)
05 Have a Cuppa Tea (Ron Sexsmith)
06 Underneath the Neon Sign (Ron Sexsmith)
07 Driving (Ron Sexsmith)
08 Killer's Eyes (Ron Sexsmith)

13 Moments (Ron Sexsmith)
14 Property (Ron Sexsmith)
15 Labour of Love (Ron Sexsmith)

As I mentioned with the first album in this series, I could have used screenshots from Sexsmith's YouTube videos, but they don't show him at his best. So instead, the photo is of him in concert from around 2017.

Ron Sexsmith - Ron Sexsmith Sings Ray Davies, Volume 1: 2013-2016

Have you ever heard of Ron Sexsmith? He's a critically acclaimed singer songwriter who has been regularly releasing albums since the early 1990s. To be honest, I haven't yet had the time to take a deep dive into his material. But I do know some of this songs, and I've been very impressed. A good place to start is with "Secret Heart," from 1995, which is probably his best known song, and has been covered by many artists, including Rod Stewart and Feist.

It turns out that Sexsmith is a massive Kinks fan. In fact, he's called himself "the biggest Kinks fan on the planet." Since about 2013, he's been posting hundreds of videos on YouTube in which he plays cover songs in a solo acoustic format, apparently doing so in his house. A lot of those are great, with many unexpected selections. But since I'm a massive Kinks fan myself, I've honed in on his covers of Kinks songs, and collected all of them. I've found enough for two albums, plus about half of a third. He's continuing to post new songs there all the time, so I hope in another six months or a year I'll have enough to fill up the rest of that third album.

In my opinion, Sexsmith isn't an awesome singer or guitar player. But he certainly is talented, talented enough to have a released 14 studio albums and counting. However, there are two things that make his Kinks covers special, I think. The first is that they're all in the solo acoustic format, and the Kinks and/or Kinks lead singer Ray Davies haven't performed that way much. The second is that Sexsmith is such a huge Kinks fan that he goes beyond the usual hits to play some lesser known but still really good Kinks songs. Those two factors combine in a nice way, because it's virtually unheard of to have acoustic versions of most of the rarer Kinks songs he does.

In terms of song order, I simply have kept them in the order he's posted them.

None of these songs have been officially released anywhere. Sexsmith has done a couple of Kinks covers for official various artists compilations, but I haven't included those because they don't fit the solo acoustic format.

This album is 58 minutes long.

UPDATE: On December 2, 2022, I updated the mp3 download file. I had been hoping to create a third volume. I had eight more songs ready to go. But it's been two years since he last did a Kinks cover, and the songs he posts has mostly switched to originals. For the cover art, the logical thing to do would be to make a cover out of a screenshot from one of his YouTube videos. The problem with that is he usually doesn't look so great. He generally looks like he's just rolled out of bed. Plus, any such screenshot would be fairly low resolution. So instead, here he is on stage in London in 2015.
