Kraftwerk - Ebbets Field, Denver, CO, 5-22-1975

The flood of concerts from Ebbets Field in Denver continues. This one is rather out of left field compared to most of the musical act we have from this venue. It is the German band Kraftwerk in 1975.

Here is a quote from the Wikipedia page about the band: "On commercially successful albums such as 'Autobahn,' 'Trans-Europe Express,' 'The Man-Machine,' and 'Computer World,' Kraftwerk developed a self described 'robot pop' Style that combined electronic music with pop, melodies, sparse arrangements, and repetitive rhythm While adopting a stylized image, including matching suits."

There is a lot more to say about this band. They were extremely influential and a number of musical genres. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the early influences category. But since I'm on vacation, I don't have a lot of time to work on this write up right now. I suggest you check out their Wikipedia page for more information:

In November 1974, the band released the studio album "Autobahn." The most significant song on it was also called "Autobahn," which was 23 minutes long in its album version. A single version of that song was released, which was less than four minutes long. It was a surprise hit in the United States, making the Top Forty. That led to the band touring the US for the first time. This was a radio broadcast of one of the stops on that tour.

I believe this recording is unreleased. The sound quality is pretty good, though maybe below that of most other Ebbets Field radio broadcasts.

This album is 43 minutes long.

The cover image is from 1975, but I don't know any details beyond that.

  1. Funny translation: "Craftwork", since Kraftwerk is the German word for power station. 😂

    1. I was doing the thing where my talking turned into typing, and I forgot to fix that word. It's fixed now.

  2. I had already suspected it was a mistake on Wikipedia’s part.
By the way, I saw Kraftwerk live once, back in 1971 around the time of their second LP. It was in a city called Aachen (Germany), about 80 km from Kraftwerk’s hometown of Düsseldorf, near the border with the Netherlands and Belgium. They played for about 4 hours, and the audience was a bit restless at the beginning. A few people, who apparently hadn’t known what to expect, were loudly complaining about the musical quality of the performance (back then, everything was still very experimental). So Florian Schneider addressed the audience, saying, “If you don’t like it, you’re free to leave—just don’t disturb the others who are listening.” And sure enough, 20 or 30 (out of about 1,000) audience members demonstratively left the room. After that, everyone was satisfied and undisturbed.

  4. Hi Paul, thanks for sharing. I have one correction: change "Morganspaziergang" to "Morgenspaziergang".

    1. Thanks. Hopefully I will remember to make that change when I get back from vacation.

  5. Discogs, etc, have the last two tracks as Klingklang and Tanzmusik and having had a brief listen, I'm inclined to agree with them - especially with Kilingklang. The last track is a little more nebulous, though sounds nothing like Morganspaziergang to me. Nice to hear though, so thanks!

    1. Ignore that last bit - it's even announced as Tanzmusik ;)

  6. If I may:
    01. Announcement of "Kometenmelodie"
    02. "Kometenmelodie 2"
    03. "Autobahn"
    04. (unidentified)
    05. Tanzmusik

    1. When I get back from vacation, I'm definitely going to have to fix this song list. It sounds like track four is. "Klingklang," no?

  7. I know the first 2 albums by heart (I bought them at release) and whatever track 4 is, it is not Kling Klang, to me it sounds like something from the "Ralf & Florian" album, but it isn't.I rather assume an improvisation or "outtake".
    Cheers
    Paul (yes, really)
