Tomorrow, in the U.S., we're having very important midterm elections. I strongly encourage all of you Americans to vote. Even though it's "only" a midterm election, it's very important for the future of the country.
Some people say, "Why bother to vote? Elections almost never hinge on a single vote." And that's true. But there's a "people like you" theory. That means that if you don't vote, odds are the people like you also will not vote, because they have the same information and are making the same decisions. If you vote, the odds are people like you will also vote. What this means in practice is that groups of people who think voting is important actually vote in large numbers and have an impact. Other groups don't bother and thus their interests are largely ignored.
We especially see this with younger people vs. older people. Overall, most young people don't understand the importance of voting, so they generally get the short end of the stick with government policies. As people get older, they increasingly understand the importance of voting, and vote in greater and greater percentages. For instance, in this election (like previous elections), it's estimated about 75 percent of the voters will be above 50 years old. If younger people would vote as much as older people do, we would like in a totally different country, a much more progressive country.
So please, vote! It's such a small thing that takes short amount of time to do, but it really is the most important way you can help steer the country's future.
Exactly!!
ReplyDeleteIt's just a short walk for me, but if I had to crawl miles over broken glass, I'd do it.
ReplyDeleteLets not, & say we did.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the younger voter / non-voters don't go to the polls if all of "the boxes" aren't checked off on the candidate in their preferred party. In the case of the last major election, many didn't vote because they didn't get their college loans wiped clean by the time of the election. The youth vote doesn't understand that all their desires don't always come true immediately. The youth vote also doesn't understand that sometimes the election is a choice of the "lesser of the 2 evils". A zero vote is a vote for the opposing candidate of your political leanings.
ReplyDeleteI've never understood youth's reluctance to vote, After all, they'll live longer than us oldster and therefore will have to endure the results longer. in any event, I hope Amercia will behave better than is has the last two years, but that is a pretty big wish.
DeleteVery well said yes get out and VOTE
ReplyDeleteProps for the PSA. It doesn't always work, it doesn't always matter, but it's one of the best shots you have and in this case--here. today. now.--may be one of the only things standing between authoritarian/neo-facism and however sadly attenuated the liberal democracy we have left. Some days the lesser of evils is what you take until you can move ahead. And we can. and will. we must. Sorry for the novella.
ReplyDeleteDone!
ReplyDeleteDone and done!
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I did the deed earlier. In front of a crowd of hundreds!
ReplyDeleteThe results have been as good as we could possibly have expected. Thanks to everyone who did your part!
