To be honest, I didn't expect much from this. I knew of Kooper from his roles as a session musician, producer, and songwriter, but I'd never heard much of him as a performer. But I was quite impressed, actually. He played a lot of good songs, a mix of covers and originals, and had some interesting banter between songs.
Here's his Wikipedia entry:
This recording sounded pretty good, but it did have some trouble with hiss. I did some audio editing to get rid of most of the hiss on the talking tracks, with the help of the MVSEP program. But I didn't touch the hiss on the actual songs, for fear that would hurt the music. But it isn't nearly as noticeable there anyway. It only stood out when the background was mostly silent.
This unreleased album is 56 minutes long.

Awesome! I was lucky enough to work with Al at the Hit Factory in NYC in 1984. Eccentric and fascinating character - we were trying to mix an album for the band St. Regis. A project that never saw the light of day. As Al describes the sessions - “Fraternal twins that could teach Liam & Noel a thing or two.”. LOL... After the project, I was honored by receiving a copy of one of his famous Kapusta Kristmas Albums - https://www.discogs.com/release/10289102-Al-Kooper-The-Third-Annual-Kapusta-Kristmas-Album. Self released and limited to a few hundred copies to friends and music biz alumni of recording sessions. Al is a legend! Amazing career. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Kooper
ReplyDeleteHis book is one of the best music memoirs I've read. https://www.amazon.com/Backstage-Passes-Backstabbing-Bastards-Survivor/dp/0879309229. Thank you again for the Record plant show! Cheers.
Paul :
ReplyDeleteFirst of all let me thank you for all your excellent work that gives us so many fantastic moments of music pleasure ! THANKS A LOT !
Secondly I've loved the Al Kooper post. I would like to strongly recommend you his 50th anniversary concert (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgml2t8KFDQ&list=RDxgml2t8KFDQ&start_radio=1). It would be great if you could improve its sound and post it on the blog !
Lastly, although knowing that you're very busy with, among many others, all the Record Plant and Midnight Special concerts, I would like also to strongly recommend the concerts broadcasted in germany by Rockpalst (https://www.rockpalastarchiv.de/welcomee.html), from which you've alresady posted a few, and Ohne Filter. I'm sure some of our german friends will gladly help you to find those concerts.
Thanks. Yes, I've been aware of Rockpalast for some time. I've never heard of Ohne Filter though, so thanks for that tip. I haven't deliberately targeted Rockpalast yet, though a few things happened to get posted. Probably in the future I'll take a closer look. Ditto with the King Biscuit Flower Hour.
DeleteHere is a list of the Ohne Filter concerts : http://www.truckgeier.de/ohne%20filter.htm
DeleteIn what concerns King Biscuit Flower Hour a lot of them are officially release.
