Here's the next stray tracks collection from Lucinda Williams, covering 2001 to 2004.
By this point in her career, Williams had established a name for herself. As a result, she was invited to take part in a lot of various artists compilations, mostly tribute albums. Four of the songs here are from such albums (where she naturally does cover versions of the artists who are subject of the tribute). For most of the rest, she duets on other people's studio albums. Only one song is unreleased, and that also is a duet ("Poisoned Rose" with Elvis Costello).
Since nearly all the songs are officially released, it's no surprise that the sound is excellent. The one exception, that duet with Costello, comes from a TV show, so the sound is very good there as well.
Basically, if you liked the previous Williams stray tracks albums I've made, you're sure to like this one.

More Lucinda...as always appreciated (even though we're close to reaching a stage in her career where I feel her voice is starting to deteriorate, especially on some live recordings).
ReplyDeletePaul, what do you think of Kacey Musgraves? I just got recently into her (yeah, so I'm six years behind the hype) but I think she's fabulous. Great songs, great lyrics, great delivery.
I don't pay a lot of attention to new music post-2000 unless someone points something out or I stumble across it. So I haven't heard her it. But at your recommendation I'm going to check out her 2013, since that seems to be the popular starting point. Thanks for the tip.
DeleteIt's true that that's her big label debut. She recorded some "demo" albums before, of which the first are pure juvenilia (lots of yodeling and such), but the self-titled album from 2007 is pretty good. It's a lot more "mainstream country" than her later stuff, but it's surprising that it took her another six years to get a deal/major album out. If you like the Dixie Chicks (which I do) you would like this. It has a really nice version of that old overplayed classic "Heart Of Gold"
