It's time for more Van Morrison. I've been posting pretty much one album of stray tracks for each year in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and that continues with 1973.
Actually, Morrison could have released two more albums in 1973, because I've already posted an album he did of country standards recorded from 1971 to 1973, which can be found here:

As for this album, the highlight has to be song "Caledonia Soul Music." It's seventeen minutes long and mostly instrumental. I have no idea why on Earth it remains officially unreleased. You should get this album for that alone, but the rest of it is solid too. He does two duets with Jackie DeShannon that are especially nice.
This album is 43 minutes long.
01 No Way (Van Morrison)
02 I Paid the Price (Van Morrison)
03 Sweet Sixteen (Van Morrison & Jackie DeShannon)
04 The Wonder of You (Jackie DeShannon & Van Morrison)
05 You Done Me Wrong (Van Morrison)
06 Not Supposed to Break Down (Van Morrison)
07 Caledonia Soul Music (Van Morrison)

I still am unable to make new cover art. However, Peter of the "Albums I Wish Existed" blog downloaded this album and was inspired to make his own excellent cover art, which I've included here.
Caledonia Soul Music is an outtake from His Band And The Street Choir, so dates from 1970.
ReplyDeleteI've heard that, after I posted this. But it would be really hard for me to change now. I'd have to redo all the albums in between. Let's just imagine in this alternate universe that he didn't get around to releasing it until 1973. ;)
DeleteYep, interesting background about this time period at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Caledonia_Soul_Orchestra
DeleteJesus, why the hell didn't he include it?! Would've been one of the best three songs on the LP!
ReplyDeleteI know! Strange decisions.
DeleteGreat to find this
ReplyDeleteThank you!
thanks. Amazing
ReplyDeleteThis is so ABSOLUTELY STINKY! Since I'm in New Orleans,Pops would agree logical extension of West End Blues. Thanks Juli for putting this on my radar, sweet potato yours..
ReplyDeleteStunning!
ReplyDeleteWho is playing mandolin on the Caledonia Soul Music track? Is it John Platania? No credit given to a mando player on the album. This is the best unofficially released
ReplyDeleteNo idea, but I agree it's awesome. :) Does anyone else know?

DeleteIt must be John Platania. Published lyrics have "John, play a taste of mandolin". I can't find him listed anywhere as a mandolin player, but it's likely the best guess because there are no other mandolin players listed around this time.
DeleteGetting a 404 error. Please re-post this important should-have-been album.
ReplyDeleteSorry. I mean 403 error.
ReplyDeleteAny chance you could repost this? The download link doesn't seem to be working anymore. Many thanks with fingers crossed!🙏
ReplyDeleteI just checked, and it looks like the link is still working. Are you only having a problem with this one, or all Zippyshare links?
DeleteThanks Paul - had the same issue with the Country album download as well. Perhaps an issue my end in that case - will try from a different computer
DeleteSo... I swear Caldonia Soul Music is either "channeling" or straight up theft of Funkadelic's "Can you get to that".. is it me.. the similarities are just too close. Now that song was released in 71, and there was some mention of this originating in 70 - so who knows, maybe they snagged it from Van.. either way, both are amazing - ;)
ReplyDeleteHi! Is it possible to buy this cd or only download it please?
DeleteNope, no way to buy. Just download it. If you can't do that here, try using SoulseekQT.
DeleteWhere did this stupendous quality "Caledonia Soul Music" original from? Is it available in lossless anywhere?
