Phil Lesh & Friends - Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY, 11-15-2012

Here's another concert from the April 2026 Capitol Theatre in Port Chester soundboard leak. This one features Phil Lesh and Friends. There are gazillions of concert recordings from this Grateful Dead spin-off band, like there are for most such spin-off bands. But I want to post this anyway to be true to posting all the good stuff from the leak.

If you're not that familiar, Phil Lesh was the bassist for the entire duration of the Grateful Dead's existence. He was a great bassist, but had limitations as a vocalist. He was kind of the Ringo Starr of the Dead when it came to singing, meaning he might get one song on a studio album to sing, if even that much. He wasn't that prolific as a songwriter either, though he did write a few really good ones, especially "Box of Rain," the last song in this concert.

Thus, even though he was the star attraction here due to his history with the Grateful Dead, it's hard to lead a concert as a bassist who only occasionally sings. So there's a lot of leaning on the "Friends" part of "Phil Lesh and Friends." Here are the other members of the band in this concert:
Jackie Greene: Guitar, Keyboards, and Vocals
Adam MacDougall: Keyboards and Vocals
John Kadlecik: Guitar and Vocals
Joe Russo: Drums

Greene has had a pretty successful music career as a singer-songwriter, as well as being in some other bands, such as Trigger Hippy with Joan Osborne. John Kadlecik has an amaaaazing ability to sound like Jerry Garcia, both with his lead vocals and his lead guitar work. Even though it's an imitative thing, I still find it impressive, showing a lot of talent.

Phil Lesh and Friends existed from 2008 until when Lesh died in 2024. Here's the Wikipedia page:

I believe every single song here was played by the Grateful Dead at some point, including the covers, such as "Dear Mr. Fantasy," originally by Traffic.

The album is two hours and 47 minutes long.

  1. Back in the day Phil & Friends were a Bigger Act than every individual former Grateful Dead member, with the exception of Jerry Garcia. Bob Weir opened for Phil & Friends on a tour.
